DOUGLAS COUNTY —Three people were hospitalized, including two children who remain in critical condition, after a three-vehicle crash Wednesday night on Kansas Highway 10 near the U.S. Highway 59/Iowa Street interchange in Lawrence, according to a statement from the Douglas County Sheriff's office.
Deputies determined a 36-year-old Edwardsville woman driving a white Kia Optima was westbound on K-10 and entered the eastbound lane just west of the exit for U.S. 59/Iowa Street. A 22-year-old Olathe man, the driver of an eastbound white Ford F-150, attempted to avoid a collision and steered into westbound lane.
However, as the Kia driver also corrected into the westbound lane, the vehicles collided head-on. A black Toyota Camry, driven by a 19-year-old Overland Park woman, also struck the passenger side of the F-150 as it came to rest.
Dispatchers were notified of the crash at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, and multiple agencies responded. The response and investigation closed the highway for several hours into early Thursday morning.
Medics transported the Kia driver and two children in the vehicle, ages 2 and 1, to Kansas City-area hospitals. The drivers of the F-150 and Camry were not transported from the scene.
