Judge: Kansas man guilty of wife's murder

HARVEY COUNTY—On Friday, Edward L. Altum, age 71 of Newton, was found guilty of 2nd Degree Intentional Homicide and Aggravated Battery in the killing of his wife Peggy S. Altum in December of 2023.

The judge made the ruling following Altum's plea of no contest to the charges.

In December of 2023, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 2000 block of Terrace Drive in Newton, according to a media release from from police.

A man at the house identified as Edward Altum reported his 74-year-old wife had been shot and refused to answer any further questions.

EMS transported the victim to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where she later died. Police arrested  Altum and recovered a gun at the scene, according to police.

 This case is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Llamas on March 17.
