Kansas bomb squad called after explosion on trash truck

FRANKLIN COUNTY—One person was injured after an explosion on a trash truck in Franklin County.

Just before 6a.m. Monday, Franklin County Emergency Communication received a call that about a man injured by an explosion, according to a media release from Ottawa Police.

The man was collecting trash for a garbage service and when the truck compacted the trash, there was an explosion. An object struck the man. The trash truck driver transported the man to Advent Health Ottawa with minor injuries.

Due to the circumstances, the Olathe Fire Department Bomb Squad was contacted and responded to Ottawa to assist with the investigation along with The Ottawa Police and the Bureau or Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

They determined the device inside of the truck was a pneumatic tool that was ejected after it was pinched in the trash compactor.
