BARTON COUNTY —The Judge in a Kansas man's child sex crime trial declared a mistrial Friday when the jury informed the court they were deadlocked.

Nicholas Schwerdtfeger, a Kansas Sex offender with numerous child sex crime convictions dating back to 2007 faced a new charge  of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child after a girl at Great Bend Middle School reported a sex offense to a school resource officer in October of 2019, according to Great Bend Police.

USD 428 said the incident did not take place at the school and that the accused offender was not a district employee.

As a result of the mistrial, the State of Kansas has the option to set the matter for a second trial. The court will review the defendant’s bond early this week.
