Family escapes Kan. house fire; cause under investigation

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Authorities are working to determine the cause of a Tuesday morning house fire in Topeka.

Just after 4a.m., crews responded to the report of a house fire at 1119 SW Clay Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire coming from the two stor home. Fire crews made a defensive fire attack, and were able to contain the fire. Witnesses reported that all five adults escaped without injuries.

The preliminary investigation determined the dollar loss – $37,000 damage to the structure; $17,000 dollar loss was associated with loss of contents, according to Harrison.

Working smoke detectors were not located in the home.
