KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A woman has died and a child remained in critical condition after they were pulled from a house fire on Kansas City's southeast side, police there said.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 5 p.m. Wednesday by someone who called 911 seeking help, police say in a news release. By the time officers arrived on the scene, firefighters had already found the woman and child inside the burning home, police said.
Both were taken to nearby hospitals, where the woman was pronounced dead. The child was listed in critical condition. Authorities have not released their names.
The fire and the woman’s death are being investigated as suspicious, police said. Detectives with the police department’s bomb and arson unit are investigating alongside homicide detectives, officials said.
