RENO COUNTY— Three people escaped a Kansas house fire Sunday in Hutchinson.
Just before 5:30p.m. Sunday Firefighters responded to 505 North Washington Street for a report of a fire in a single-story home, according to Fire Chief Steven Beer.
Upon arrival, fire crews reported heavy fire and smoke coming from a window on the front side of the residence.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the room where it started. However, the home sustained smoke and heat damage throughout. Fire investigators determined the homeowner was using a lighter as a flashlight which caught the underside of a bed on fire.
Two adults and one child were home at the time and escaped with no injuries. No firefighters were injured. Fire crews remained on scene performing salvage and overhaul operations. Red Cross was notified to assist the tenants, as the home is uninhabitable.
