SALINA —The Salina Fire Department (SFD) is raising funds for a community Safe Haven Baby Box.
SFD said in a statement released Wednesday that the initiative aims to provide a secure, anonymous way for parents in crisis to surrender their newborns.
"I'm excited about it and we have great support from the Salina City Commission," said SFD Chief Tony Sneidar. "The City manager's office tasked the fire department with making this come to fruition."
This project, initiated by Mayor Bill Longbine and supported by city officials and the Salina Fire Department, will place a fully compliant Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station 1, 222 W. Elm Street.
Community support through donations is important and the lifeblood of this initiative. Donations will cover the costs of installation, maintenance, and awareness campaigns. The impact of Driven to Care's grant has given the initiative a great start, but SFD still needs help to make this initiative a reality.
The anticipated costs include the Baby Box, demolition, construction materials, installation, and electrical work, amounting to $21,000, and a $500 annual maintenance fee. The Salina Community Baby Box initiative is not just a project; it's a life-saving opportunity for parents in crisis, helping to secure the futures of our most vulnerable infants.
