WASHINGTON COUNTY — Authorities are investigating a small plane mishap involving a crop duster that occurred just before 10a.m. Sunday in Washington County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a fixed wing single engine air tractor piloted by Douglas Scott Carthel, 54, Hennessey, OK., was attempting to land from the south, southeast near Washington, Kansas.

The aircraft came off of cruise power and went into idle and all power to the aircraft was lost.

Due to the loss of power and the slow speed, the pilot landed the aircraft in the field at 1120 Quivira Road.

Carthel was not injured.  He was coming in for additional chemicals at the time of the incident, according to the Washington County Sheriff's department.

In an email, Carthel said he was working out of the Washington County airport on Sunday and never had an incident with such bad timing. "I haven't put a scratch on an airplane since 1996 and I fly literally almost every day of the year. Pretty sick about it."

The KHP had no additional details on the incident.
