🏀TMP boys win; girls lose on day 2 of shootout

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys picked up their second straight win over the season while the Monarch girls suffered their first loss of the year Friday afternoon on the second day of the Hays City Shootout.

Girls: Hugoton 51, TMP 33

The TMP-Marian Monarch girls opened the game with a Megan Hamel three pointer to take a 3-0 lead. But Hugoton answered that with a 15-2 run to build a 15-5 first quarter lead.

TMP was able to cut the deficit to five points with a Kyleigh Allen three-point play and a Jaci VonLintel field goal bringing TMP back 15-10 but a three-pointer by Hugoton gave them an eight-point lead after the first quarter.

The Monarchs were able to cut the deficit back to six points two different times to open the second quarter only to see the Eagles go on a six nothing run to build a 12-point lead at 26-14. Hugoton led by 15 at the break.

TMP was able to close within 11 in the third quarter but couldn’t get any closer in the second half as Hugoton went on to the 51-33 win.

Meagan Hamel scored a team-high 10 points and Emilee Lane added eight-points and seven rebounds.

Boys: Hugoton 51, TMP 33

The TMP boys rallied from down 12 points in the third quarter on their way to a 62-59 win over Hugoton Friday.

TMP jumped out to an early 7-4 lead with Jackson Schulte scored five of the first seven points. Hugoton answered the TMP run with a 11-3 first-quarter run of their own as they built a 15-10 lead. The Eagles led 17-15 after one quarter.

A pair of Bryce Seib free throws tied the game at 17 to open the second quarter but Hugoton had another answer. This time they put together a 12-4 run to lead 29-21.

The Monarchs was able to close within one with four straight from Schulte and a three-point play from Lucas Lang.

But with the Hugoton lead down to just one at 29-28 the Eagles strung together a 10-0 lead to end the third quarter and led 39-28 through three quarters.

They extended the run to 13-2 to open the fourth quarter and took their largest lead of the game at 12 at 42-30.

TMP trimmed to lead to single digits late in the third quarter and a Schulte three just before the buzzer capped off a 9-2 run closing the score to 47-45 Hugoton with one quarter to play.

In the final frame the Monarchs took control, they built a 55-50 lead midway through the fourth thanks to a 13-3 run.

 Hugoton erased the deficit and took the lead on a three-pointer with under a minute to play but Jace Wentling broke free for a layup putting TMP up 60-59 with 28 second remaining.

Gavin Unrein added a pair of free throws with 7.9 second to go giving TMP a 62-59 lead. All eight of Unrein’s points came in the fourth quarter.

Hugoton get a good look at a three-pointer as time expired but it was off the mark as the Monarchs rallied for the 62-59 win.

Schulte led all scorers with 24 in the game. Bryce Seib added nine for TMP.

The Monarchs are 2-0 and both the boys and girls teams will take on Hays High Saturday in the final day of the Hays City Shootout.
