SHAWNEE COUNTY —One person died in an accident late Thursday in Shawnee County.
Just after 11:30 p.m., police dispatch in Topeka began receiving reports of erratic driving by a driver later identified as 21-year-old Cheyenne Day of Topeka in a silver vehicle, according to city spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.
Police observed the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and initiated a pursuit. Officers pursued the vehicle for a short time, until speeds became unsafe to continue.
A short time later, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office located the same vehicle, again attempting to conduct a traffic stop. The driver again initiated a short pursuit, and deputies later terminated their pursuit.
Minutes later, law enforcement received reports of a single vehicle crash in the 2300 block of NW Topeka Blvd. The crash involved the same vehicle that was driving erratically and fled from law enforcement earlier.
First responders began immediate life-saving measures on Day, the only occupant of the vehicle. She was transported from the scene by American Medical Response (AMR) to a local hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. The accident remains under investigation.
