DOUGLAS COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a crash and chase in Douglas County.
On Sunday, a man was observed walking in downtown Lawrence carrying a rifle, according to a social media report from Lawrence Police.
He ran to a car, backed into a patrol vehicle, jumped the curb, crashed into a city lamp post and then drove down the sidewalk to get away.
Just after 2a.m. Sunday, an alert Police Sergeant patrolling downtown Lawrence saw the man walking southbound in the 800 block of Massachusetts carrying what appeared to be a long-barreled rifle.
The man was heading toward a group standing near 9th and Massachusetts. The Sergeant stopped, yelled “police,” and ordered the man to stop. The man fled on foot to the nearby car and took off, dropping the weapon along the way. Another officer spotted the car near 6th and Michigan.
The man fled from officers again down 6th Street and onto Kansas 10 then to Interstate 70, where he crashed trying to navigate an on-ramp. The man got out of the crashed vehicle and again began leaving the scene but officers quickly arrested him without injury and he was booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility.
