Janitor accused of threatening to shoot Kan. school employees

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities and USD 436 are investigating an alleged threat of school violence.

On Tuesday, a private citizen called the Caney Police to report an individual who had made a threat to shoot employees at the Caney High School, according to a media release. The reporting party stated that the person who had made the threats was still on school property.

Officers with the Caney Police Department immediately responded to the Caney High School and discovered the suspect later identified as John Swalley, 50, Caney, a janitor who was workin in the administration building of the school. As a precautionary measure the administration building was evacuated.

Officers then contacted Swalley and he was was taken to the Caney Police Department for questioning. Officers also conducted interviews with employees who were present when the alleged threats were made.

After interviewing Swalley, officers determined there was enough evidence to arrest him on requested charges of Aggravated Criminal Threat, Cause terror evacuation or disruption.

Swalley is being held without bond in Montgomery County.

Charges have been forwarded to the Montgomery County Attorney’s Office for final review and formal charging.
