5 pets die in Kansas house fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Family pets died in house fire on Sunday in Topeka.

Just before 2 p.m. Sunday, fire crews responded to a house fire at 221 SE Carnahan Place in Topeka, according to Public Information Officer Alan Stahl.

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the single story home. The fire was extinguished with out damaging any nearby homes or buildings. Two adults and three children escaped without injury. Five cats perished in the fire, according to Stahl.

Investigators determined the fire cause to be accidental, associated with an electrical malfunction. The estimated dollar loss – $15,000.00; of which $13,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $2,000.00 associated with contents loss. The occupants were displaced due to the fire. Working smoke detectors were located within the home.
