KANSAS CITY —Two people died in an accident just after 1a.m. Saturday in Kansas.
A Chevrolet Tahoe was eastbound on NE Cookingham Road at a very high rate of speed, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchins. Just east of NE Reinking Road, the driver of the SUV failed to negotiate the curvature of the roadway. The vehicle traveled off the roadway to the left down the grassy embankment and continued eastbound along the embankment.
The SUV struck a roadway sign, several small trees and then struck a large tree and caught on fire. The entire vehicle was engulfed in flames
The driver and front seat passenger were both declared deceased at the scene, according to Becchina. The rear seat passenger was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. These are fatalities # 6 and 7 for 2025 compared to #17 at this time last year, according to Becchina. The names of the victims have not been released.
