
JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fire started by fireworks that injured four people over the weekend.
Just after 10p.m. Saturday crews responded to a building fire at 127 Street and Gardner Road, according to the Northwest Consolidated Fire District Chief Todd Maxton.
When crews arrived, they observed a detached building on fire and fireworks were actively exploding while victims were laying on the ground.
Firefighters, Johnson County Med Act, Johnson County Park Police and other responding personnel got the victims to safety and provided aid.
Johnson County Med Act transported four people to local hospitals. Two had serious injuries.
The outbuilding was a total loss. The Kansas State Fire Marshal and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation, according to Maxton.
Possessing and using fireworks in unincorporated Johnson County is not allowed except for public displays.
Northwest Consolidated Fire District serves DeSoto and northwest Johnson County.
