Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) announced with heavy hearts that it has recently said goodbye to Andrea, the Zoo’s beloved female Amur tiger. Over the past several months, Andrea had been under close observation by RHZ’s animal care team and veterinary staff due to age-related declining health. Despite dedicated professional care and close monitoring, Andrea was experiencing an overall decline in her quality of life.

After careful consideration, the team made the compassionate decision to humanely euthanize Andrea, ensuring her comfort and dignity in her final moments.

Born April 28, 2008, at Saint Louis Zoological Park, Andrea was 17 years and 5 months old. The average life span of Amur tigers is typically 10–15 years, and slightly longer when in the care of humans.

Andrea transferred to Rolling Hills Zoo in 2016 from the Indianapolis Zoo under a breeding recommendation by the Species Survival Plan® (SSP), a program that works cooperatively with Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoos to maintain healthy, genetically diverse animal populations. The SSP carefully evaluates the entire Amur tiger population across participating institutions and makes breeding recommendations aimed at preserving a 97% genetic diversity within the managed population.

During her time at Rolling Hills Zoo, Andrea gave birth to three cubs, having previously welcomed one cub while at the Indianapolis Zoo. She played an important role in supporting the growth and sustainability of the Amur tiger population within AZA zoos — an incredible contribution to the long-term conservation of this critically endangered species.

“Andrea was a great companion to the other tigers living at RHZ. She was also a tentative mother to the three cubs that were born here. She easily captured the hearts of anyone that had the privilege of taking care of her,” shared Vickie Musselman, RHZ Registrar.

“Andrea was very patient with the keepers when it came to training, especially those just starting out,” said Kira Noda, RHZ Associate Curator. “She always had a calm and confident demeanor in everything that she did. My favorite activity with Andrea was feeding time —

as she would sit patiently waiting for you to feed her. Andrea will be greatly missed by everyone that has cared for her while at Rolling Hills Zoo.”

Andrea’s presence, strength, and gentle spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her and those who visit Rolling Hills Zoo. Her legacy lives on through her cubs and the continued conservation work of zoos around the world.

Kansas zoo mourns loss of beloved Amur tiger

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A Kansas man jailed in connection with a fatal drug overdose involving a teen made his first court appearance on Monday.

&nbsp;Isaac L. Hord, 24, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated&nbsp; endangering a child in the death of 15-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cozine.com/obituaries/kennedy-herren" target="_blank">Kennedy Herren</a>, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

Just before 8a.m. on&nbsp;September 14, police responded to the report of a deceased 15-year-old in Wichita, according to a media release from police. The investigation determined the death to be the result of a drug overdose.

Since then, Wichita police overdose analyst have been working to pursue justice and ensure accountability for the people responsible for this senseless death.&nbsp;

Just after 5:30p.m. Oct. 15,&nbsp;K-9 officers arrested Hord, in connection with this case. He remains in custody in the Sedgwick Count Jail on a one-million dollar bond, according to online jail records.

Suspect in overdose death of Kansas girl faces a judge

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Tuesday his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-zelenskyy-putin-russia-ukraine-e3a1d62d2a24f459aa6dbbfa940e1067">plan for a swift meeting</a>&nbsp;with Russian leader Vladimir Putin was on hold because he didn't want it to be a “waste of time.” It was the latest twist in Trump's stop-and-go effort to resolve the war in Ukraine.

The decision to hold off on the meeting in Budapest, Hungary, which Trump had announced last week, was made following a call Monday between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“I don’t want to have a wasted meeting,” Trump said. “I don’t want to have a waste of time — so we’ll see what happens.”

Lavrov made clear in public comments Tuesday that Russia is opposed to an immediate ceasefire. Trump, meanwhile, has been shifting his stance all year on key issues in the war, including whether a ceasefire should come before longer-term peace talks, and whether Ukraine could win back land seized by Russia during almost four years of fighting.

Trump's hesitancy in meeting Putin will likely come as a relief to European leaders, who have accused Putin of stalling for time with diplomacy while trying to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-blackout-energy-winter-grid-074fafac8a4b5bb556308379808d041b">gain ground on the battlefield</a>.

The leaders — including the British prime minister, French president and German chancellor — said they opposed any push to make Ukraine surrender land captured by Russian forces in return for peace, as Trump most recently has suggested.

They also plan to push forward with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-ukraine-russia-assets-frozen-loans-plan-91929d8b2263ace7ea452157f19a6222">plans to use</a>&nbsp;billions of dollars in frozen Russian assets to help fund Ukraine’s war efforts, despite some misgivings about the legality and consequences of such a step.

The U.S. and Russian presidents last&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-putin-summit-ukraine-war-takeaways-b9ff04c4143c6ac228e196ddaf6dd6d3">met in Alaska</a>&nbsp;in August, but the encounter did not advance Trump’s stalled attempts to end a war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The Kremlin didn’t seem to be in a rush to get Trump and Putin together again either. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that “preparation is needed, serious preparation” before a meeting.

Russia occupies about one fifth of Ukraine, but carving up their country in return for peace is unacceptable to Kyiv officials.

Also, a conflict frozen on the current front line could fester, with occupied areas of Ukraine offering Moscow a springboard for new attacks in the future, Ukrainian and European officials fear.

The statement by the leaders of Ukraine, the U.K., Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Denmark and EU officials came early in what Zelenskyy said Monday would be a week that is “very active in diplomacy.”

(AP) — A plane carrying passengers from Omaha, Nebraska, to Los Angeles made an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/american-airlines-false-alarm-cockpit-skywest-1842c44dd9264cd80f1b0dbdd741722a">emergency landing</a>&nbsp;minutes into the flight “out of an abundance of caution” after pilots mistakenly thought someone was trying to breach the cockpit.

The SkyWest Flight 6569 had just left Omaha’s Eppley Airfield around 7:45 p.m. Monday when the plane’s pilots declared an emergency and headed back to the airport.

A statement from SkyWest — a regional carrier operated by American Airlines — said the plane “returned to Omaha out of abundance of caution after experiencing communication issues with a flight crew mic.”

An American Airlines spokesperson said Monday night that the intercom pilots and flight attendants use to speak to each other had been left on by accident. The flight crew, unable to communicate with the pilots, banged on the cockpit door, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Fearing an attempted breach of the cockpit, the jet returned to the Omaha airport. A local emergency dispatcher contacted by the airport initially called for officers to meet the plane upon its return based on a report of “people trying to get in to the cockpit.” The dispatcher was later heard canceling that request.

“Advised no emergency,” the dispatcher said. “There was a staffing issue.”

Pilots on flight from Nebraska thought someone was breaking into cockpit

WASHINGTON (AP) —Several GOP senators representing agriculture-rich states are pushing back at the president’s stated plans to buy Argentine beef in order to make beef cheaper for U.S. consumers.

Trump floated the idea to reporters when traveling back from south Florida on Sunday evening.

But that’s prompted concerns from Senate Republicans who say the move would ultimately hurt American ranchers.

North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven said he spoke with Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer about the issue when the president hosted Senate Republicans for lunch at the White House on Tuesday.

“It’s very important that we support our cattle ranchers,” Hoeven said, adding that he expects the administration to say more about the issue.

Montana Sen. Steve Daines also raised his objections to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, he said.

“I’m more concerned about the Argentine beef coming in that’s undercutting our Made in America cattle,” Daines said.

Friesen, 63, of Ozawkie, was eastbound in the 900 block of NE 62nd Street.&nbsp; The minivan traveled off the roadway to the left, through&nbsp;a ditch continued over a driveway, through a field, and came to rest at the tree line.

American Medical Response transported Friesen to a local hospital&nbsp;with life-threatening injuries and she was later pronounced deceasd.

 She did not appear to be wearing a seat belt, according to Deputy Christian.

Kansas woman dies after violent minivan crash

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court">The Supreme Court</a>&nbsp;said on Monday that it will consider whether people who regularly smoke marijuana can legally own guns, the latest firearm case to come before the court since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-guns-decision-58d01ef8bd48e816d5f8761ffa84e3e8">its 2022 decision expanding gun rights</a>.

President Donald Trump’s administration asked the justices to revive a case against a Texas man charged with a felony because he allegedly had a gun in his home and acknowledged being a regular pot user. The Justice Department appealed after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gun-ban-drugs-federal-appeals-hunter-biden-f26f8b7488615785602003932efd881a">a lower court largely struck down</a>&nbsp;a law that bars people who use any illegal drugs from having guns.

Last year, a jury&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hunter-biden-gun-trial-federal-charges-delaware-5dd8a9380235c6360a1ddb691ef24a06">convicted Hunter Biden</a>&nbsp;of violating the law, among other charges. His father, then-President Joe Biden, later pardoned him.

Arguments probably will take place early in 2026, with a decision likely by early summer.

The Republican administration favors Second Amendment rights, but government attorneys argued that this ban is a justifiable restriction.

They asked the court to reinstate a case against Ali Danial Hemani. His lawyers got the felony charge tossed out after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the blanket ban is unconstitutional under the Supreme Court’s expanded view of gun rights. The appellate judges found it could still be used against people accused of being high and armed at the same time, though.

Hemani's attorneys argue the broadly written law puts millions of people at risk of technical violations since at least 20% of Americans have tried pot, according to government health data. About half of states legalized recreational marijuana, but it's still illegal under federal law.

The Justice Department argues the law is valid when used against regular drug users because they pose a serious public safety risk. The government said the FBI found Hemani's gun and cocaine in a search of his home as they probed travel and communications allegedly linked to Iran. Supreme Court to decide whether pot smokers can legally own guns

SEDGWICK COUNTY—An Oklahoma truck driver accused of intentionally backing over and killing a Georgia man in the parking lot of a Wichita truck stop was scheduled to return to court Tuesday.

The preliminary hearing for Travis Briscoe, 46,&nbsp; was postponed, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. He is charged with 2nd degree murder for the death of 57-year-old Abdelmuttalib Mohammed.

On August 13, police responded to the Love's Travel Stop in the 1500 block of East 21st Street North for an injury crash, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. They found 57-year-old Abdelmuttalib Mohammed of Georgia, under a truck. Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at 5:32 p.m.

Investigators with the Wichita Police Department determined Mohammed had been in a verbal altercation with Briscoe. The two men did not know each other, according to Gupilan. During the altercation, Briscoe began backing into a parking stall with his semitractor-trailer striking&nbsp; Mohammed.

Briscoe remains jailed on a $150,000 bond, according to online jail records.

NEW YORK (AP) — Disney+ and Hulu subscription cancellations rose during the month that ABC&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jimmy-kimmel-show-suspended-charlie-kirk-ae43c600bd0f2a4c7d3c12077e91b211">briefly cancelled “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,</a>&nbsp;" according to data from subscription analytics company Antenna.

Walt Disney Co. owns the streaming platforms and ABC. ABC pulled the show off the air for less than a week in September in the wake of criticism over his comments related the killing of conservative activist&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/charlie-kirk-shooting-utah-university-republicans-8357c3d102de09e3320fde761258131a">Charlie Kirk</a>.

Antenna estimates total cancellations in September were 4.1 million for Hulu and 3 million for Disney+. The “churn rate,” or the percentage of customers that cancel their subscriptions in a specific month, jumped from 5% in August to 10% in September for Hulu. That figure jumped 4% in August to 8% in September for Disney+.

However, signups were higher in September for both Hulu and Disney+ than the prior five months.

Antenna is a subscription analytics company that tracks U.S. consumer data. The data excludes subscribers in bundle deals.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A suspect arrested in connection with a violent abduction shown on a doorbell video last week in Wichita made his first appearance in court Monday.&nbsp;

A judge charged 22-year-old Daniel T. Espitia Guevara with&nbsp;aggravated domestic battery and misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and&nbsp; criminal restraint, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. He is also on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.

Last week, the Wichita Police Department asked for the community’s help in identifying and locating a woman in a doorbell video who was seen being taken by force on October 12, at approximately 2 AM., in the 1400 block of North Volutsia in Wichita.

Just after 3p.m. October 14, Wichita Police Investigators received a phone call, from a woman claiming to be the individual investigators were attempting to identify. Investigators immediately responded to her location, made contact, and transported her to City Hall so detectives could conduct a victim interview. Police confirmed the identity of the woman as a 35-year-old who lives in the area where the video was captured. Police believed this incident is a case of domestic violence where the woman was victimized by her boyfriend. The woman did not have any significant injuries.

Just after 7 p.m. October 14, officers with the Wichita Police Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction team (DIVRT) located and arrested Guevara in relation to a doorbell surveillance case and booked him into jail.

He remains in custody on a $75,000 bond, according to the district attorney's office.

TOPEKA — The University of Kansas said Monday the chancellor privately shared insights about a proposed compact offering preferential treatment by the Trump administration in exchange for freezing tuition rates, limiting international student enrollment and restraining campus employees from expressing political views.

KU Chancellor Doug Girod, vice chair of the prestigious Association of American Universities, responded to a request Friday to provide feedback on President Donald Trump’s unprecedented plan to bring higher education institutions into line with his agenda.

Seven of nine universities originally offered the Trump deal have rejected the offer, which was denounced in a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.acenet.edu/Documents/Statement-Compact-101725.pdf" target="_blank">statement by the American Council on Education</a>&nbsp;and dozens of other education associations. KU’s last-minute role in a virtual meeting was sought along with that of Washington University in St. Louis, as well as Arizona State University. It wasn’t clear if KU was asked to sign the deal with Trump.

“Chancellor Girod was invited to provide feedback to federal officials on the Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education and related matters impacting universities,” said Erinn Barcomb-Peterson, director of media relations at KU. “The chancellor described the discussion as productive, and federal officials were interested in his perspective.”

After the meeting, Linda McMahon, secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, said on X that the gathering with Girod and others was “an important step toward defending a shared vision.”

“With continued federal investment and strong institutional leadership, the higher education sector can do more to enhance American leadership in the world and build tomorrow’s workforce,” she said. “A renewed commitment to the time-honored principles that helped make American universities great will strengthen the country and deepen public confidence in higher education.”

The White House convened the group ahead of Monday’s deadline for reaction and comment from nine private and public institutions — KU wasn’t on that list — initially contacted by the Trump administration. No institutions have signed the agreement.

On Saturday, Dartmouth President&nbsp;<a href="https://president.dartmouth.edu/news/2025/10/dartmouths-feedback-compact" target="_blank">Sian Beilock issued a statement</a>&nbsp;that said she shared on the call that “I do not believe that a compact — with any administration — is the right approach to achieve academic excellence, as it would compromise our academic freedom, our ability to govern ourselves and the principle that federal research funds should be awarded to the best, most promising ideas.”

Paul Mahoney, interim president of the&nbsp;<a href="https://news.virginia.edu/content/community-message-interim-president-paul-mahoney" target="_blank">University of Virginia, said a contract with the federal government</a>&nbsp;predicating assessment of students on anything other than merit would erode confidence in U.S. higher education and threatened to undermine lifesaving research.

In addition to Dartmouth and UVA, the answer was “no” from Brown University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, University of Southern California and University of Arizona. Vanderbilt University and University of Texas had yet to provide conclusive answers.

The Trump administration since taking office in January has blocked billions of dollars in research grants in an effort to compel operational changes at U.S. universities and colleges. Reasons for the budget cuts included alleged antisemitism on campus; policies ensuring LGBTQ+ equality; and programs tied to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Frustrated by pushback from higher education, the White House delivered letters Oct. 1 to select colleges and universities on the Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education. The strategy was to invite voluntary compliance with changes the Trump administration could have difficult enforcing.

The Trump administration’s compact would mandate that schools freeze tuition for five years, limit international students to 15% of undergraduate enrollment, impose standardized tests for admission, abide by a ban on DEI programs and adopt a definition of gender that would block transgender individuals from using restrooms or participating in sports that aligned with their gender identity.

In addition, the arrangement would forbid participating colleges and universities from allowing employees to express political views on behalf of their institutions. Academic departments offering opinions counter to views held by conservatives would have to be closed. Students and employees would be polled on compact compliance and the results released publicly. There would be financial penalties for institutions that violated pledges included in the deal.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that other colleges or universities beyond those contacted so far could be signers of the deal.

The American Council on Education’s statement, with 35 other organizations in opposition to the compact, said Trump’s maneuvering raised concern about undermining qualities that made the U.S. educational system exceptional.

“The compact offers nothing less than government control of a university’s basic and necessary freedoms — the freedoms to decide who we teach, what we teach and who teaches,” the statement said. “The compact is just the kind of excessive federal overreach and regulation, to the detriment of state and local input and control, that this administration says it is against.”

The joint statement said the proposed compact would hamper ability of colleges and universities to innovate and make advancements that contributed to the nation’s economic well-being and security.

“It would hinder, not safeguard, freedom of expression for all points of view, and it will not assist in expanding social and economic mobility for all of our students,” the statement read.

The strategy was to invite voluntary compliance with changes the Trump administration could have difficult enforcing.The Trump administration’s compact would mandate that schools freeze tuition for five years, limit international students to 15% of undergraduate enrollment, impose standardized tests for admission, abide by a ban on DEI programs and adopt a definition of gender that would block transgender individuals from using restrooms or participating in sports that aligned with their gender identity.In addition, the arrangement would forbid participating colleges and universities from allowing employees to express political views on behalf of their institutions. Academic departments offering opinions counter to views held by conservatives would have to be closed. Students and employees would be polled on compact compliance and the results released publicly. There would be financial penalties for institutions that violated pledges included in the deal.Trump wrote on Truth Social that other colleges or universities beyond those contacted so far could be signers of the deal.The American Council on Education’s statement, with 35 other organizations in opposition to the compact, said Trump’s maneuvering raised concern about undermining qualities that made the U.S. educational system exceptional.“The compact offers nothing less than government control of a university’s basic and necessary freedoms — the freedoms to decide who we teach, what we teach and who teaches,” the statement said. “The compact is just the kind of excessive federal overreach and regulation, to the detriment of state and local input and control, that this administration says it is against.”The joint statement said the proposed compact would hamper ability of colleges and universities to innovate and make advancements that contributed to the nation’s economic well-being and security.“It would hinder, not safeguard, freedom of expression for all points of view, and it will not assist in expanding social and economic mobility for all of our students,” the statement read.

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Kansas City.

Just after 9p.m. Monday Kansas City, Missouri, police dispatch was notified about a vehicle pursuit involving the Independence, Missouri Police Department.&nbsp; 

The pursuit entered Kansas and just after 9:30p.m. the vehicle reentered Missouri, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol became involved, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

At approximately 9:45p.m. the pursuit stopped in the 9200 block of Oakland Street in Kansas City, Missouri. Based on the information available now, there was an interaction between the suspect and the trooper that led to shots being fired by the troope at the suspect.

The suspect vehicle fled the scene and the pursuit continued as officers and Troopers pursued the vehicle. The vehicle pursuit concluded a short distance away in the 8100 block of East 91st Terrace.

Two suspects were taken into custody.&nbsp; The adult male driver was transported to a local hospital with an apparent gunshot wound. He is reported to be in non life threatening condition.

&nbsp;No Kansas City or Independence officers discharged their weapons. Kansas City, Missouri Police are in charged of the investigation, according to DiMartino.

2 in custody: Trooper fired shots after chase crossed state line

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man who&nbsp;admitted killing a Kansas woman who was reported missing is going to prison for the rest of his life. 

On Monday Judge Jeffrey Goering sentenced 31-year-old Kyle Bearden to a life term for the murder of 30-year-old Mariana Christian, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. The earliest possibility of parole is 25 years and an additional 181 months in prison if parole is granted.

In August, Bearden entered a plea of guilty during an evidentiary hearing before Judge Goering.

The plea agreement called for the parties to jointly recommend a prison sentence of life with parole eligibility after 25 years, to be followed by an additional 15 years of imprisonment if parole is granted.

Around 10:30 a.m. on July 21, a friend of Mariana Christian filed a missing person report. The friend said Ms. Christian had a history of mental health challenges and often relied on them for transportation to work. That morning, Christian was not at her home in the 1200 block of S. Paige when the friend arrived to pick her up.

At the residence, the friend encountered an unidentified man later identified as Kyle Bearden who said he didn’t know Ms. Christian’s whereabouts.

He claimed Mariana Christian had left the apartment on Friday, July 18, in a truck with an unknown man and woman and hadn’t returned. He also expressed concern for her safety. Although not listed on the lease, the man appeared to be living in the apartment.

Although Ms. Christian was last seen on Friday, July 18, she wasn’t reported missing until Monday, July 21. After multiple failed attempts to reach her and finding her absence unusual, the friend contacted police. Officers issued an attempt-to-locate alert, and investigators took over the case.

WPD investigators identified Bearden as a person of interest. They followed leads to locate Ms. Christian, discovering evidence of her death and where her remains were left in Cottonwood Park near Armor and Bayley in Wichita.

Wichita Police officers responded to the area and located human remains. Investigators believe Bearden shot Ms. Christian.

Crime scene investigators processed Ms. Christian’s apartment and found evidence of foul play. On the morning of July 31, the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center positively identified the remains as those of Mariana Christian.
