TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The woman often credited with sewing the first national U.S. flag — at the request of George Washington himself, her descendants claimed — might have been puzzled by Saturday's modern Flag Day.

In Betsy Ross' day, flags marked ships and told soldiers where they should move in the confusion of battlefield smoke and noise. The intense reverence many Americans feel for Old Glory arose from the Civil War, when the need to keep the banner aloft in battle led the Union army to treat the deadly job of flag bearer as a high honor — and men responded with fatal heroics.

The first, local Flag Day observances came after the Civil War and eventually a federal law designated June 14 as Flag Day in 1949, under World War I combat veteran Harry Truman. He declared in a proclamation the next year that the U.S. flag symbolizes freedom and "protection from tyranny."

Americans' attachment to their flag is imbued with feelings that in other nations might attach to a beloved monarch or an official national religion. The flag is a physical object "that people can relate to," said Charles Spain, director of the Flag Research Center in Houston.

"If you put a flag on a pole, the wind makes it move," Spain, a retired Texas Court of Appeals justice, added. "Therefore, the flag is alive."

The holiday marks the date in 1777 that the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag for what to Great Britain were rebellious American colonies.

It set the now-familiar 13 alternating horizontal stripes of red and white, one for each self-declared U.S. state, along with the blue upper quadrant with white stars. The Journals of Congress from 1777 says that the stars represented "a new constellation," but a 1818 law mandated one white star for each state.

National observances for Flag Day began well ahead of the law signed by Truman, with a proclamation issued by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916.

Wilson's action came several decades after communities began Flag Day celebrations. In 1891, Philadelphia held its first — at one of Ross' former homes — and it evolved into an annual, weeklong Flag Fest.

The small village of Waubeka, Wisconsin, north of Milwaukee, claims the first observance in 1885.

According to the National Flag Day Foundation headquartered there, a 19-year-old teacher in a one-room school, Bernard Cigrand, put a small flag on his desk and had students write essays about what the flag meant to them. He advocated a national holiday for decades as he worked as a dentist in the Chicago area.

When didthe U.S. flag become sacred to many Americans?

Lisa Acker Moulder, director of the Betsy Ross House historical site in Philadelphia, said that for Ross, conferring with Washington would have been the key point of her account. The U.S. flag wasn't as venerated before the Civil War in 1861-65 as it is now.

Keeping flags aloft was crucial to maneuvering troops in Civil War battles, and that made flag bearers big targets for the enemy. They couldn't shoot back and had to stand tall, said Ted Kaye, secretary for the North American association for flag scholars, known as vexillologists.

Both sides' propaganda told soldiers that carrying a flag into battle was an honor reserved for the most morally fit — and that view took hold, Kaye said. One Michigan cavalry regiment's red flag declared, "Fear Not Death --Fear Dishonor."

"This created this cult of honor around these battle flags, and around, by extension, the national flag," Kaye said.

Civil War soldiers showed extraordinary courage under fire to keep their colors aloft, and multiple flag bearers died in single battles, said Matt VanAcker, who directs a now decades-old project at the Michigan Capitol to conserve flags from the Civil War and later conflicts. Michigan has collected about 240 old battle flags and had a display in its Capitol rotunda for decades.

Replicas have replaced them so that the original banners — and pieces of banners — can be preserved as a physical link to the soldiers who fought under them.

"Many of the flags in our collection are covered with bullet holes," VanAcker said. "A lot of them have blood stains — the physical evidence of their use on the battlefield."

Reverence for Old Glory that inspired Flag Day arose decades after Betsy Ross sewed her first

KANSAS CITY —One person died in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Friday in Kansas City.

A man was initially occupying a black GMC Sierra pickup in a lane of traffic on eastbound Interstate 70, just west of Blue Ridge Cutoff, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil Dimartino. A white Freightliner truck, tractor and flatbed trailer was behind the GMC. The semi driver was attempting to change lanes and make his way across traffic.

 For unknown reasons, the pedestrian exited his GMC Sierra&nbsp; in the middle of rush hour traffic and attempted to enter the cab of the semi. The truck driver began to slowly pull forward in an attempt to exit the area while the pedestrian was running alongside the flatbed trailer of the truck. 

The pedestrian then attempted to jump on to the trailer, grabbing a retention strap as the trailer was moving. The pedestrian lost his grip and fell to the roadway. The rear axle of the trailer ran over the pedestrian before the truck driver could get his vehicle stopped. 

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The truck driver was uninjured in the collision.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All lanes of eastbound Interstate 70 were closed to traffic at Interstate 435 for approximately two and a half hours, according to DiMartino.&nbsp;This is fatality #32 compared to #47 at this time in 2024. The name of the victim has not been released.

Trailer ran over driver who exited his pickup on I-70 in rush hour traffic

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Demonstrators crowded into parks and plazas across the U.S. Saturday to rally against President Donald Trump as officials urged calm and mobilized National Guard troops ahead a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-military-parade-army-tanks-cost-584f60f4efc341bce44a2d01c3f5c58c">military parade</a>&nbsp;to mark the Army’s 250th anniversary that coincides with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-army-military-parade-birthday-2f5cd12c8ccd4efddc29bfa3cf8f2705">the president's birthday</a>.

Atlanta’s 5,000-capacity&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/no-kings-protest-things-to-know-trump-8d37f2bb2bf20ab503205b277e92b885">“No Kings” rally</a>&nbsp;quickly reached its limit, with thousands more demonstrators outside the barrier in front of the state Capitol and a handful of counterprotesters leaving before the rally finished.

Intermittent light rain fell as sign-carrying marchers gathered for the flagship rally in Philadelphia's Love Park, where a woman wearing a foam Statue of Liberty crown brought a speaker system and led an anti-Trump sing-along, changing the words “young man” in the song “Y.M.C.A.” to “con man.”

Karen Van Trieste, a 61-year-old nurse who drove up from Maryland, said she grew up in Philadelphia and wanted to be with a large group of people showing her support.

“I just feel like we need to defend our democracy,” she said. She is concerned about the Trump administration's layoffs of staff at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the fate of immigrant communities and the Trump administration trying to rule by executive order, she said.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, crowds cheered anti-Trump speakers and chanted “we have no kings” while people started to gather in front of Los Angeles City Hall, many carrying American flags as a drum circle began.

Protests are planned in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nokings.org/#map">nearly 2,000 locations</a>&nbsp;across the country, from city blocks and small towns to courthouse steps and community parks, organizers said, but no events are scheduled in Washington, D.C., where the military parade will take place in the evening.

The 50501 Movement orchestrating the protests says it picked the “No Kings” name to support democracy and speak out against what they call the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration.The name 50501 stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement.

The demonstrations come on the heels of protests that flared up across the country over federal&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-raids-los-angeles-f8c4160e32be0ff77c5d4bf0ccef98cc">immigration enforcement raids</a>&nbsp;that began last week and Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-raids-los-angeles-2d1d5e2f638da600c4b34fe8bf8cf3aa">ordering the National Guard</a>&nbsp;and Marines to Los Angeles, where protesters blocked a freeway and set cars on fire.

Several hundred people gathered in a downtown park, with organizers handing out small American flags and many people carrying protest signs saying things like “fight oligarchy” and “deport the mini-Mussolinis” as they waited for the march to start.

Some signs bore immigrant-rights messages, including “The wrong ice is melting” and “Unmask ice.”

A handful of people wore gas masks or balaclavas to cover their faces.

One man in Revolutionary War era garb and a tricorn hat held a sign with a quote often attributed to Thomas Jefferson: “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”

About a thousand people gathered on the grounds of Florida’s old Capitol, where protesters chanted, “This is what community looks like,” and carried signs with messages like “one nation under distress” and “dissent is patriotic.”

Organizers of the rally explicitly told the crowd to avoid any conflicts with counterprotesters and to take care not to jaywalk or disrupt traffic.

Governors and city officials vowed to protect the right to protest and to show no tolerance for violence.

Republican governors in Virginia, Texas, Nebraska and Missouri are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-protests-texas-national-guard-4f8ffc07788515c0d0e7ae40c7980565">mobilizing National Guard troops</a>&nbsp;to help law enforcement manage demonstrations.

There will be “zero tolerance” for violence, destruction or disrupting traffic, and “if you violate the law, you’re going to be arrested,” Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin told reporters Friday.

In Missouri, Gov. Mike Kehoe issued a similar message, vowing to take a proactive approach and not to “wait for chaos to ensue.”

Nebraska’s governor also signed an emergency proclamation Friday to activate his state’s National Guard, a step his office called “a precautionary measure in reaction to recent instances of civil unrest across the country.”

<a href="https://www.mobilize.us/nokings/event/792291/?referring_vol=10902088&amp;share_context=dashboard-event-details&amp;sharer_role=2">Organizers say</a>&nbsp;that one march will go to the gates of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis warned demonstrators that the “line is very clear” and not to cross it.

Some law enforcement agencies announced they were ramping up efforts for the weekend. In California, state troopers will be on “tactical alert,” which means all days off are canceled for all officers, while West Virginia’s governor put the state police and National Guard on standby.

On social media, Washington state Gov. Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, called for peaceful protests over the weekend, to ensure Trump doesn’t send military to the state.

“Donald Trump wants to be able to say that we cannot handle our own public safety in Washington state,” Ferguson said.

In a statement Friday, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, urged protesters “to remain peaceful and calm as they exercise their First Amendment right to make their voices heard.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, said his administration and state police are working with police in Philadelphia ahead of what organizers estimate could be a crowd approaching 100,000 people.

Philadelphia’s top prosecutor, District Attorney Larry Krasner, warned that anyone coming to Philadelphia to break the law or immigration agents exceeding their authority will face arrest. He invoked civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as a guide for demonstrators.

“If you are doing what Martin Luther King would have done, you’re going to be fine,” Krasner told a news conference.

Opponents of President Donald Trump’s administration are set to rally in hundreds of cities on Saturday during the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-military-parade-army-tanks-cost-584f60f4efc341bce44a2d01c3f5c58c">military parade in Washington</a>&nbsp;to mark the Army’s 250th anniversary, which coincides with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-army-military-parade-birthday-2f5cd12c8ccd4efddc29bfa3cf8f2705">Trump’s birthday</a>.

The “No Kings” protests are set to take place to counter what organizers say are Trump’s plans to feed his ego on his 79th birthday and Flag Day. “No Kings” will follow several days of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-crackdown-us-protests-049a611d47d0fc7656731e4f4c714e93">nationwide protests</a>&nbsp;against federal immigration raids including in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/los-angeles-protests-ice-national-guard-1009eac191a8f6248463a5028cbe0f68">Los Angeles,</a>&nbsp;where Trump's deployment of the National Guard further agitated his opponents.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is following the president's cue. Abbott said Thursday that he has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-protests-texas-national-guard-4f8ffc07788515c0d0e7ae40c7980565">ordered the deployment</a>&nbsp;of more than 5,000 Texas National Guard troops, along with more than 2,000 state police, in response to the ongoing demonstrations and in preparation for the “No Kings" protests.

The Army birthday celebration had already been planned. But earlier this spring, Trump announced his intention to ratchet up the event to include 60-ton M1 Abrams battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers rolling through the city streets. He has long&nbsp;<a href="https://a%20show%20of%20patriotic%20force/">sought a similar display of patriotic force</a>.

The “No Kings” theme was orchestrated by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fiftyfifty.one/">50501 Movement</a>, a national movement made up of everyday Americans who stand for democracy and against what they call the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration. The name 50501 stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement.

Protests earlier this year have denounced Trump and billionaire adviser&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-musk-usaid-c0c7799be0b2fa7cad4c806565985fe2">Elon Musk</a>, the now former leader of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, a government organization designed to slash federal spending. Protesters have called for Trump to be “dethroned” as they compare his actions to that of a king and not a democratically elected president.

“They’ve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services,” the group says on its website, referring to the Trump administration and its policies. “They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies.”

The No Kings Day of Defiance has been organized to reject authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics and the militarization of the country's democracy, according to a statement by organizers.

Organizers intend for the protests to counter the Army’s 250th anniversary celebration — which Trump has ratcheted up to include an expensive, lavish military parade. The event will feature&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/army-parade-trump-birthday-96bb9c8e9af1ef285c56fdc3d1ba4b35">hundreds of military vehicles and aircraft</a>&nbsp;and thousands of soldiers. It also happens to be his 79th birthday and Flag Day.

“The flag doesn’t belong to President Trump. It belongs to us,” the “No Kings” website says. “On June 14th, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t — to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings.”

Protests in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nokings.org/#map">nearly 2,000 locations are scheduled around the country</a>, from city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, organizers said.

No protests are scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., however, where the military parade will be held. The group says it will “make action everywhere else the story of America that day.”

“No Kings” plans instead to hold a flagship march and rally in Philadelphia to draw a clear contrast between its people-powered movement and what organizers described on their website as the “costly, wasteful, and un-American birthday parade” in Washington.

What is planned at the ‘No Kings’ protests?

People of all ages are expected to come together in the protest locations for speeches, marching, carrying signs and waving American flags, organizers said in a call Wednesday.

On the group's website, it says a core principle behind all “No Kings” events is a commitment to nonviolent action, and participants are expected to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation.

No weapons of any kind should be taken to “No Kings” events, according to the website.

How many people are expected to participate?

The No Kings Day of Defiance is expected to be the largest single-day mobilization since Trump returned to office, organizers said. Organizers said they are preparing for millions of people to take to the streets across all 50 states and commonwealths.

RILEY COUNTY —Authorities are investigating the cause a fire at Walmart.

Just before 5p.m. on Friday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire reported at Walmart,&nbsp;  101 Bluemont Avenue, according to a media relase.

 Upon arrival, crews found people evacuating and light smoke showing at the doors. Employees were extinguishing the fire as crews arrived at the middle of the store where the fire occurred.&nbsp;

Crews ensured that extinguishment was complete by overhauling the area and taking smoldering material outside. 

Just before 7p.m., Walmart was still closed while fire crews evacuate smoke from inside the building.No injuries were reported. The fire loss is not yet available, but it is expected to be considerable due to smoke damage throughout the building.&nbsp; 

.Riley County Police Department, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, and Pottawatomie County EMS responded to assist.

Kansas Walmart store evacuated due to fire

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating another homicide in Kansas City, Missouri have identified the victim as 62-year-old Terry L. Jerry, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina.

Just before 7a.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to the 3400 block of Broadway on a medical call with EMS.

Caller was security in the area and they saw a person, latr identified a Jerry, unresponsive in a parking lot behind the address. On arrival officers were led to a parking lot to the west of the address where they located the victim unresponsive on the sidewalk with what appeared to be significant unknown injuries.

Officers called for EMS who declared the Jerry deceased at the scene. 

Homicide detectives are investigating, along with crime scene investigators, and representatives from the medical examiners office. Police have not reported suspect details or an arrest.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy was struck by a vehicle Thursday night while on scene investigating an earlier crash

Just after 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a non-injury crash at the intersection of Kansas 42 and Maize Road, according to Sheriff's Department Spokesman Branden Stitt.

While outside his patrol vehicle and investigating the initial crash, a westbound pickup struck the deputy.

Sedgwick County EMS initially reported the deputy’s injuries as critical but later upgraded his condition to serious upon transport to a Wichita hospital.&nbsp; The 39-year-old deputy who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since July 2023, continues to recover. He remains hospitalized but is alert and has been speaking with colleagues and family, according to Stitt.

The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the incident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) has taken over the investigation. The case remains under active investigation by KHP. The name of the deputy has not been released.

US helps Israel shoot down barrage of Iranian missiles

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices leaped, and stocks slumped Friday on worries that escalating violence following&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/israel-iran-attack">Israel’s attack on Iranian nuclear and military targets</a>&nbsp;could damage the flow of crude around the world, along with the global economy.

The S&amp;P 500 sank 1.1% and wiped out what had been a modest gain for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 769 points, or 1.8%, and the Nasdaq composite lost 1.3%.

The strongest action was in the oil market, where the price of a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude jumped 7.3% to $72.98. Brent crude, the international standard, rose 7% to $74.23 for a barrel.

Iran is one of the world’s major producers of oil, though sanctions by Western countries have limited its sales. If a wider war erupts, it could slow the flow of Iran’s oil to its customers and keep the price of crude and gasoline higher for everyone worldwide.

Beyond the oil coming from Iran, analysts also pointed to the potential for disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a relatively narrow waterway off Iran’s coast. Much of the world’s oil that's been pulled from the ground moves through it on ships.

Past attacks involving Iran and Israel have seen prices for oil spike initially, only to fall later “once it became clear that the situation was not escalating and there was no impact on oil supply,” according to Richard Joswick, head of near-term oil at S&amp;P Global Commodity Insights.

That has Wall Street waiting to see what will come next. U.S. stock prices dropped to their lowest points for the day after Iran launched ballistic missiles toward Israel.

For now, the price of oil has jumped, but it’s still lower than it was earlier this year. “This is an economic shock that nobody really needs, but it is one that seems more like a shock to sentiment than to the fundamentals of the economy,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management.

That in turn sent U.S. stocks to a loss that was notable in size but outside their top 15 for the year so far.

Companies that use a lot of fuel as part of their business and need their customers feeling confident enough to travel fell to some of the sharpest losses. Cruise operator Carnival dropped 4.9%. United Airlines sank 4.4%, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings fell 5%.

They helped overshadow gains for U.S. oil producers and other companies that could benefit from increased fighting between Israel and Iran.

Exxon Mobil rose 2.2%, and ConocoPhillips gained 2.4% because the leaping price of crude portends bigger profits for them.

Contractors that make weapons and defense equipment also rallied. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and RTX all rose more than 3%.

The price of gold climbed as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gold-prices-new-record-trump-tariffs-0082e0040fb6095497ba93ee6454255b">investors searched for safer places</a>&nbsp;to park their cash. An ounce of gold added 1.4%.

Often, prices for Treasury bonds will likewise rise when investors are feeling nervous. That’s because U.S. government bonds have historically been seen as some of the safest options around. But Treasury prices fell Friday, which in turn pushed up their yields, in part because of worries that a spike in oil prices could drive inflation higher.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-trump-tariffs-b0f098351a1f3f850a4c20b215556027">Inflation</a>&nbsp;has remained&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/producer-prices-inflation-economy-trump-tariffs-0a25bf91e2dde5df0d8c131a2d95c816">relatively tame</a>&nbsp;recently, and it’s near the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%, but worries are high that it could be set to accelerate because of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/consumer-prices-inflation-trump-trade-6ea513a44876c2f4dc948a25c15b0eb0">President Donald Trump’s tariffs</a>.

That sent the yield on the 10-year Treasury up to 4.41% from 4.36% late Thursday. Higher yields can tug down on prices for stocks and other investments, while making it more expensive for U.S. companies and households to borrow money.

A better-than-expected report Friday on sentiment among U.S. consumers also helped drive yields higher. The preliminary report from the University of Michigan said sentiment improved for the first time in six months after Trump put many of his tariffs on pause, while U.S. consumers’ expectations for coming inflation eased.

On Wall Street, Adobe fell 5.3% even though the company behind Photoshop reported a stronger profit for the latest quarter than Wall Street expected. Analysts called it a solid performance but said investors may have been looking for some bigger revenue forecasts for the upcoming year.

Shares of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jbs-shares-nyse-trading-environmental-6bd3076253b3f1daaca3f140690e23f7">Brazilian meat giant JBS</a>&nbsp;fell 3.9% as they made their debut on the New York Stock Exchange. The company wants to increase access to its shares among global investors, despite criticism from environmental groups, U.S. lawmakers and others who noted JBS’ record of corruption, monopolistic behavior and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/brazil-deforestation-jbs-meatpackers-cattle-d393d5915a46e75009e2433b3de3cd33">environmental destruction</a>.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 fell 68.29 points to 5,976.97. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 769.83 to 42,197.79, and the Nasdaq composite sank 255.66 to 19,406.83.

In stock markets abroad, indexes slumped across Europe and Asia. France’s CAC 40 lost 1%, and Germany’s DAX dropped 1.1% for two of the larger losses.

Oil prices leap and US stocks slump on worries about the crude market

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a week of protests over federal immigration raids, about 200 Marines have moved into Los Angeles and will protect federal property and personnel, a military commander said Friday.

Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, commander of Task Force 51 who is overseeing the 4,700 troops deployed, said that the Marines have finished training on civil disturbance and the first batch moved to a federal building west of downtown Los Angeles where they will start their operations at noon local time.

The development comes a day after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked a federal judge’s order that had directed President Donald Trump to return control of National Guard troops to California, shortly after a federal judge had ruled the Guard deployment was illegal and both violated the Tenth Amendment and exceeded Trump’s statutory authority.

Some 2,000 National Guard troops have been in the city since last week when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/insurrection-act-trump-troops-newsom-military-national-guard-a842f79e1c0e244039be274a6f266a7a">immigration raids set off protests.</a>&nbsp;Some have provided protection to immigration agents making arrests. Another 2,000 Guard members were notified of deployment earlier this week.

The 200 Marines will be replacing soldiers protecting the federal building, which will allow more of National Guard members to be assigned to protecting federal agents on their operations, Sherman said.

None of the military troops will be detaining anyone, he added.

“I would like to emphasize that the soldiers will not participate in law enforcement activities. Rather, they’ll be focused on protecting federal law enforcement personnel,” Sherman said.

Roughly 500 National Guard members have been used to provide security on immigration raids after undergoing expanded instruction, legal training and rehearsals with the agents doing the enforcement before they go on those missions.

It's unclear if the Marines will eventually provide security on raids. A total of 700 Marines have been trained to work in LA.

The movement of Marines into LA comes as a curfew has been in place in downtown and protests have ended after a few hours with arrests this week largely for failure to disperse. On the third night of the 8 p.m. curfew, officers with the Department of Homeland Security deployed flash bangs to disperse a crowd that had gathered near the jail, sending protesters sprinting away.

As with the past two nights, the hourslong demonstrations remained peaceful and upbeat, drawing a few hundred attendees who marched through downtown chanting, dancing and poking fun at the Trump administration’s characterization of the city as a “war zone.”

The protests began Friday after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. Protesters blocked a major freeway and set cars on fire over the weekend, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/australian-reporter-hit-by-nonlethal-round-while-covering-intensifying-protests-in-los-angeles-9695217ad2fa48c9a1adc4fbb0091c59">police responded</a>&nbsp;with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades.

Elsewhere, demonstrations have picked up across the U.S.,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-protests-arrests-austin-aa726c826047f8d7eb4091acc8929b8e">emerging in more</a>&nbsp;than a dozen major cities. Some have led to clashes with police and hundreds have been arrested.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called the troop deployment a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-gavin-newsom-immigration-protests-a8269425e604f6f03affdc627a2a5721">“serious breach of state sovereignty”</a>&nbsp;and a power grab by Trump, and he has gone to court to stop it. The president has cited&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-raids-los-angeles-2d1d5e2f638da600c4b34fe8bf8cf3aa">a legal provision</a>&nbsp;that allows him to mobilize federal service members when there is “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.”

Under the Posse Comitatus Act, active-duty forces are prohibited by law from conducting law enforcement.

Sherman said the U.S. Marine Corps is responsible for guarding U.S. embassies overseas so they are well-trained on how to defend a federal building.

States face questions on deploying troops

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has put&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-protests-texas-national-guard-4f8ffc07788515c0d0e7ae40c7980565">5,000 National Guard members</a>&nbsp;on standby in cities where demonstrations are planned. In other Republican-controlled states, governors have not said when or how they may deploy troops.

A group of Democratic governors earlier signed a statement this week calling Trump’s deployments “an alarming abuse of power.”

In Los Angeles, troops work in shifts and the public is likely to only see a few hundred out, Sherman said.

The Trump administration has argued the troops are necessary to protect federal officers and quell unrest.

So far, the protests have been centered mostly in downtown near City Hall and a federal detention center where some immigrants are being held. Much of the sprawling city has been spared from the protests.

There have been about 470 arrests since Saturday, the vast majority of which were for failing to leave the area at the request of law enforcement, according to the police department.

There have been a handful of more serious charges, including for assault against officers and for possession of a Molotov cocktail and a gun. Nine officers have been hurt, mostly with minor injuries.

The McPherson County Sheriff reported a 2004 Toyota Corolla driven by Danny Lee Heath, 63, Hutchinson, was stopped at the stop sign on Arrowhead Road and pulled out onto Old Highway 81 in front of a pickup driven by Kaleb Bowen, 19, Moundridge.&nbsp; The pickup struck the car in the passenger side door.&nbsp; The passenger in the Toyota identified as Mariah Lyddane, 30, Hutchinson, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Moundridge Fire and EMS, according to the sheriff's office.&nbsp;

Kansas man and woman killed in pickup, car crash

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A woman who called 911 to report shooting her son in October of 2024 is due back in court Friday afternoon.

&nbsp;Tesha Florence, 46, is charged with second degree murder and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in the case, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In October 9, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received a 911 call from Florence reporting that she shot her son, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses.

First responders located a 16-year-old identified as Robert Florence inside an apartment in the 9100 Block of East Harry. He had a single gunshot wound. EMS transported him to an area hospital where he was in extremely critical condition. He died two days later, according to Moses.

At the scene, officers detained&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=168822">&nbsp;Florence,</a>&nbsp;the boy's mother.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the investigation into this case, detectives learned of a previously unreported incident from March 2024 where Florence threatened an ex-husband and his current girlfriend with a gun.

Florence remains in the Sedgwick County Jail on a $1.2 million bond, according to the district attorney's office.

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 1.15 million power banks are under recall across the U.S. after some fires and explosions were reported by consumers.

According to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2025/More-than-One-Million-Anker-Power-Banks-Recalled-Due-to-Fire-and-Burn-Hazards-Manufactured-by-Anker-Innovations">Thursday notice</a>&nbsp;from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, electronics maker Anker Innovations is recalling certain “PowerCore 10000” power banks because the lithium-ion battery inside can overheat.

An overheating battery can lead to “melting of plastic components, smoke, and fire hazards,” Anker wrote in an accompanying&nbsp;<a href="https://www.anker.com/a1263-recall">announcement</a>. The company added that it was conducting this recall "out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our customers."

According to the CPSC, China-based Anker has received 19 reports of fires and explosions involving these now-recalled portable chargers. That includes two minor burn injuries and 11 reports of property damage amounting to over $60,700.

The recalled “PowerCore 10000” power banks have a model number of A1263. They were sold online at Anker's website — as well as Amazon, eBay and Newegg — between June 2016 and December 2022 for about $27 across the U.S., per the recall notice.

Consumers in possession these now-recalled chargers are urged to stop using them immediately — and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.anker.com/a1263-recall">contact Anker</a>&nbsp;for a free replacement.

Impacted consumers can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.anker.com/a1263-recall">visit Anker's website</a>&nbsp;for more information and register for the recall. To receive a replacement, consumers will need to submit a photo of their recalled power bank that shows its model number, serial number, their name, date and the word “recalled” written on the product.
