KANSAS CITY —Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced additional charges against a Kansas City man in connection with his infant son’s fatal fentanyl and methamphetamine poisoning that took place on the 2700 block of Quincy Avenue in Kansas City on January 28.&nbsp;

Terry Canady was originally charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the 1st Degree, Abuse or Neglect of a Child, and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance.&nbsp;

On Friday,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2521/Canady-Indictment">a grand jury indicted</a>&nbsp;the defendant with Trafficking Drugs in the 2nd Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm—Dangerous Felon/Prior Conviction, and Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

During the defendant’s arrest for the original charges, officers found a gun, fentanyl, and meth in his possession. The defendant was previously convicted of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in 2019.

"We're seeing too many children's lives cut short due to negligence and substance misuse in our community.&nbsp;<a href="https://dss.mo.gov/re/pdf/fentanyl-report-may-2024.pdf">In our state in 2022</a>, 43 children lost their lives due to fentanyl and of those, 20 were under the age of five. The overall number of fentanyl-related child fatalities also nearly doubled,"&nbsp;said Prosecutor Johnson.&nbsp;"While our office will prosecute each of these cases to the fullest extent of the law, we also recognize and understand the complexities of addiction. My office is committed to balancing accountability and rehabilitation to address the root of the issue to ensure everyone in Jackson County has a chance at a successful life."

The infant was later pronounced deceased. When officers searched the residence, they located a clear plastic torn baggie containing an unknown white substance inside, which later tested positive for meth. Camera footage also captured the defendant throwing away items into trash bins, later determined to be drug equipment with residue that tested positive for fentanyl.&nbsp;

Witnesses told police the defendant uses and sells meth and fentanyl.&nbsp;

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s report revealed the victim tested positive for fentanyl and meth. &nbsp;

The defendant is being held on no bond.&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — The nation’s top public health agency says about 180 employees who were laid off two weeks ago can come back to work.

Emails went out Tuesday to some Centers for Disease Control and Prevention probationary employees who got termination notices last month, according to current and former CDC employees.

A message seen by the AP was sent with the subject line, “Read this e-mail immediately.” It said that “after further review and consideration,” a Feb. 15 termination notice has been rescinded and the employee was cleared to return to work on Wednesday. “You should return to duty under your previous work schedule,” it said. “We apologize for any disruption that this may have caused.”

About 180 people received reinstatement emails, according to two federal health officials who were briefed on the tally but were not authorized to discuss it and spoke on condition of anonymity.

It’s not clear how many of the reinstated employees returned to work Wednesday. And it’s also unclear whether the employees would be spared from widespread job cuts that are expected soon&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-elon-musk-federal-workers-layoffs-d295d4bb2cdd5023c27d9cb03754e81b">across government agencies</a>.

Last month, Trump administration officials told the CDC that nearly 1,300 of the agency’s probationary employees would be let go. That tally quickly changed, as the number who actually got termination notices turned out to be 700 to 750.

With 180 more people now being told they can return, the actual number of CDC employees terminated so far would seem to stand somewhere around 550. But federal health officials haven’t confirmed any specifics.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. last month pledged “&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymLSRAQFp58" target="_blank">radical transparency</a>&nbsp;” at the department, but HHS officials have not provided detail about CDC staff changes and did not respond to emailed requests on Tuesday and Wednesday. An agency spokesman, Andrew Nixon, previously told the AP only that CDC had more full-time employees after the job cuts than it did before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those who received reinstatement emails included outbreak responders in two fellowship programs — a two-year training that prepares recent graduates to enter the public health workforce through field experience and a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cdc-lab-layoffs-b9e13d62d0da00611f84b7762be0c7b9">laboratory program</a>&nbsp;that brings in doctorate-holding professionals.

U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock celebrated the reinstatements, but said it’s not enough.

“Today’s announcement is a welcome relief, but until all fired CDC employees are restored, our country’s public health and national security will continue to be at risk,” Warnock, a Georgia Democrat, said in a statement Wednesday.

Mohammad Sharifullah was taken into custody over the weekend and admitted during an FBI interrogation to being a member of the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan and to his role in the August 2021 suicide bombing and other attacks, according to U.S. officials.

President Donald Trump announced the arrest during his Tuesday night&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-speech-congress-immigration-tariffs-guests-93f6107ede260854f90c65c4bde60de8">address to Congress</a>, telling the audience that he was “pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity. And he is right now on his way here to face the swift sword of American justice.”

Senior Pakistani intelligence officers on Wednesday confirmed the arrest and said Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, was captured in the country’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pakistan-baluchistan-violence-explainer-ec59317765a0aa49a5434097a5e9cb48">restive southwest Balochistan province</a>&nbsp;near the border with Afghanistan after multiple operations had failed to seize him.

Sharifullah is charged in federal court in Virginia with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, resulting in death. He wore a light-blue jail jumpsuit and listened through headphones as an interpreter translated the proceedings. His public defender declined to comment after his court appearance, which ended with him being held until at least a detention hearing set for Monday.

The Abbey Gate bombing, in the waning days of an airlift for those fleeing the Taliban takeover of the country amid the withdrawal by U.S. forces from the country, occurred in August 2021 when a suicide bomber attacked crowds of Afghans flocking to Kabul’s airport. Besides 13 U.S. service members, about 170 Afghans were also killed in the attack,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/afghanistan-withdrawal-abbey-gate-28dcaccf6f946bc171a2133ddbb123de">which triggered widespread congressional criticism</a>&nbsp;and undermined public confidence in the Biden administration’s handling of the conclusion of the war.

According to an FBI affidavit filed as part of the case, Sharifullah admitted under questioning to having joined the Afghanistan-based&nbsp;<a href="https://islamic%20state-khorasan/" target="_blank">Islamic State-Khorasan, also known as ISIS-K,</a>&nbsp;in 2016. He told investigators that he was in prison from 2019 until about two weeks before the bombing, at which point he was contacted by another ISIS-K member about helping in the attack, the affidavit said.

He was given a motorcycle, funds for a cell phone and a SIM card, as well as instructions for communicating via social media during the attack operation, prosecutors said. He admitted to participating in the Abbey Gate attack by scouting a route to the airport for the bomber and communicating to other members of the militant group that the path was clear.

Sharifullah said he was instructed to leave the area and later learned that the bombing was done by an ISIS-K operative he had met while jailed, the affidavit said.

The bomber was identified as Abdul Rahman al-Logari, an Islamic State group militant who had been in an Afghan prison but was released by the Taliban as the group took control of the country that summer.

During his FBI interrogation, Sharifullah also said he had shared firearms and weapons instructions before a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-concert-hall-shooting-toll-moscow-crocus-ce45e104781c108ff3b7f8a9d45fcef7">March 2024 attack at a Moscow concert hall</a>&nbsp;that was also carried out by ISIS-K and killed scores of people, authorities said.

Sharifullah was arrested in 2019 by the U.S.-backed Afghan government at the time but escaped from prison on Aug. 15, 2021, as the Taliban took Kabul.

The Pakistani officials said Sharifullah had planned the bombing from behind bars with other senior militant figures. They said he remained on the run in the border areas of Balochistan until his arrest through a joint intelligence-sharing operation between Pakistan and the U.S.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Trump for “acknowledging and appreciating” the country’s role in counter-terrorism efforts in Afghanistan.

“We will continue to partner closely with the United States in securing regional peace and stability,” Sharif said on the social media platform X.

From Kabul, the Taliban chief spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid declined to comment beyond saying that the arrest “on Pakistani soil” of an Afghan national and member of the Islamic State group shows that IS group figures “have taken refuge and established havens” inside Pakistan.

“This issue has nothing to do with Afghanistan,” Mujahid said. The regional Islamic State affiliate is a rival group to the Afghan Taliban.

Trump, a Republican, had repeatedly condemned Biden’s role in the Afghanistan withdrawal on the campaign trail and blamed Biden, a Democrat, for the Abbey Gate attack. A review last year by U.S. Central Command concluded that the attack was not preventable despite assertions by some service members who believed they had a chance to take out the would-be bomber but did not get approval.

A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity Tuesday night to discuss a case that had yet to be unsealed, said Sharifullah’s arrest came after fresh U.S. intelligence community coordination, increased intelligence sharing and pressure on regional partners to bring those responsible for the attack to account since Trump’s swearing-in in January.

Suspect in deadly Kabul airport bombing extradited to U.S., appears in court

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks climbed Wednesday after President Donald Trump pulled back on some of his tariffs temporarily. The move revived hope on Wall Street that Trump may avoid a worst-case trade war that grinds down economies and sends inflation higher.

The S&amp;P 500 rose 1.1% to bounce back from a sell-off that had erased all of its "Trump bump " since Election Day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 485 points, or 1.1%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 1.5%.

The market turned sharply higher after Trump said he's granting a one-month exemption for U.S. automakers on his stiff new tariffs for Mexican and Canadian imports. Trump made the move after talking with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, which owns Chrysler.

All of the Big Three automakers could have been hurt by such tariffs because of how much production happens across the countries. Trump's announcement sent relief through Wall Street, and Ford's and General Motors' stock both jumped more than 5% to help lead a widespread rally across the market.

The worry has been that such tariffs would not only hurt profits for companies but also jack up prices for cars and other bills for U.S. households already struggling with still-high inflation. The hope is that Trump is using the threat of tariffs as a tool for negotiation and that he may ultimately institute less painful moves for the economy and global trade if he can win what he wants.

Of course, Trump did not roll back all of the tariffs he announced on the United States' largest trading partners, including on China. His latest move may also simply add more uncertainty to a market that's already reeling from it. "The economic impact and consumer impact is still ahead of us," said Sameer Samana, head of global equities and real assets at Wells Fargo Investment Institute. "It comes back to what no one really knows, and that is how long these tariffs stay in place."

Even if tariffs ultimately end up being less harsh than feared, just the threat of them has already had a negative effect on U.S. households and businesses.

Confidence among U.S. consumers has soured due to expectations of higher inflation because of tariffs. Businesses, meanwhile, are struggling to keep up with all the changes coming from Washington, and U.S. manufacturers said their growth is approaching stall-speed amid worries about tariffs.

A couple reports on Wednesday gave a mixed read on the U.S. economy. One suggested U.S. employers pulled back sharply on their hiring last month. The report from ADP could be a warning signal ahead of the more comprehensive jobs report that's coming Friday from the U.S. Labor Department.

A separate report said growth for U.S. finance, real estate and other businesses in the services sector is better than economists expected. But businesses also said in the survey they're confronting "chaos" and uncertainty because of tariffs, according to the Institute for Supply Management.

Altogether, a recent stream of weaker-than-expected reports on the U.S. economy has raised the possibility of a worst-case scenario known as "stagflation." It's something that doesn't happen often, where the economy is stagnating and inflation is high, and policy makers at the Federal Reserve don't have a good tool to fix it.

The U.S. economy closed last year running at a solid pace. If it were to weaken sharply, the Fed could cut its main interest rate in hopes of making borrowing easier and goosing the economy. But rate cuts put upward pressure on inflation. If prices for eggs and other everyday items were rising because of tariffs, that could box in the Fed.

For his part, Trump said in an address before Congress Tuesday night that he's going ahead with tariffs, with more on track to go into effect on April 2.

"Tariffs are about making America rich again and making America great again," he said. "And it's happening and it will happen rather quickly. There will be a little disturbance, but we're OK with that."

On Wall Street, Brown-Forman jumped 10.1% after the company behind Jack Daniel's whiskey reported stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. Perhaps more importantly, CEO Lawson Whiting also said his company isn't changing its forecasts for upcoming sales, even as "we anticipate continued uncertainty and headwinds in the external environment."

Whiting said the decision by Canadian provinces to take U.S. whiskeys off their store shelves is "worse than a tariff because it's literally taking your sales away," adding that the action is "a very disproportionate response to a 25% tariff." But he also said Canada accounted for only 1% of Brown-Forman's total sales.

On the losing end of Wall Street was Campbells. The food company fell 2.9% after cutting some of its financial forecasts, citing discouraging trends for its snack products.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 rose 64.48 points to 5,842.63. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 485.60 to 43,006.59, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 267.57 to 18,552.73.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.28% following the report on U.S. services businesses from 4.18% just before. That helped it recover some of its sharp slide since January, when it was approaching 4.80%, after worries about the economy's growth weighed on yields

In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Asian and Europe. Indexes climbed 2.8% in Hong Kong, 1.2% in South Korea, and 1.6% in France.

German stocks rallied 3.4% as the prospective partners in the country's next government said they want to loosen rules that would allow for more debt.

Stocks outside the United States have been doing better than the S&amp;P 500, even with Trump's America-First policies.

JOHNSON COUNTY —Smoke alarms woke a woman who escaped her home with only minor smoke inhalation late Tuesday.

 It took firefighters about 40 minutes to extinguish the fire at 89th and Craig Drive in Overland Park, according to a social media report from the Overland Park Fire Department. There were no other injuries reported.

Lenexa Fire, Overland Park Police and JohnsonCounty Med Act assisted.

Authorities did not release what caused the fire or a damage estimate.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Rep.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/al-green-gets-ejected-000001956426dd23abfffd3f55cb0000">Al Green</a>&nbsp;of Texas wasn’t the first lawmaker ever to blurt out a shout of protest during a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/donald-trump-address-congress-updates">presidential address</a>&nbsp;to Congress.

But he's perhaps the only one in recent memory to actually be ejected from the hall Tuesday night by the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/mike-johnson/">Speaker of the House</a>.

Green said afterward it was worth it to make his point — even if he is punished by House leaders, who later called for the congressman to be censured.

“The president was saying he had a mandate, and I was making it clear that he has no mandate to cut Medicaid,” Green told reporters, referring to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/medicaid-cuts-work-requirements-congress-republicans-90ec1119f1d95de067c76f79eec7fa87">health care program used by 80 million Americans</a>.

“It’s worth it to let people know that there are some of us who are going to stand up against this president.”

Green’s outburst came at the start of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-speech-congress-immigration-tariffs-guests-93f6107ede260854f90c65c4bde60de8">President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress</a>&nbsp;and immediately set the tone. Johnson eyed the situation from his perch on the dais behind Trump, appearing hesitant to interrupt the president’s address. But the speaker was shaking his head and clearly desiring decorum in the chamber. Vice President JD Vance motioned with his thumb to throw Green out.

The speaker issued a warning for order, banging the gavel. “Take your seat, sir!” But the long-serving congressman remained standing. And then Johnson ordered the Sergeant at Arms to restore order by removing Green from the chamber.

Rarely has a lawmaker been so swiftly and severely disciplined for improper behavior.

Johnson said afterward that Green should be censured by the House — among the more severe reprimands his colleagues could mete out.

“He’s made history in a terrible way,” Johnson told reporters afterward.

“If they want to make a 77-year-old heckling congressman the face of their resistance, if that’s the Democrat Party, so be it,” Johnson said. “But we will not tolerate it on the House floor."

In past years, several lawmakers have raised their voices to shout at presidents – from GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s shouts against President Joe Biden and the “You lie!” outburst from Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C. against President Barack Obama.

Green warned Tuesday against Republican efforts in their budget proposal to change Medicaid, which is the program he said many people in his Houston-area district rely on for health care. He also warned against cuts to Medicare, the program for seniors, and the Social Security retirement program.

“This is about the people being punished by virtue of losing their health care,” Green said.

“This is the richest country in the world,” he said. “And health care is about to become wealth care, and we can't let that happen.”

Green has said he is working on new articles of impeachment against Trump.

🎥Rep. Al Green shouts down Trump, faces discipline for the outburst

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office continues searching for 22-year-old Nevaeh Ann Thompson following an aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer that occurred early Sunday, according to a social media report from the Sheriff's office.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. Sunday, a Sedgwick County Deputy conducted a traffic stop near Lincoln and Rock Road. The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Thompson. During the stop, Thompson informed the deputy that she might have outstanding warrants for her arrest. Before she could be taken into custody, Thompson quickly jumped back into her vehicle in an attempt to flee.

The deputy followed her into the vehicle, trying to prevent her escape. However, Thompson managed to shift the car into drive and sped away, dragging the deputy a short distance.

The deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident but is expected to make a full recovery. Thompson’s vehicle was later found abandoned in the 7300 block of E. Indianapolis. Surveillance footage from a nearby residence shows Thompson running from the vehicle. As of 8p.m. Sunday, she had not been located.

The Sheriff's Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Nevaeh Ann Thompson. She is described as a 22-year-old white female with black hair and brown eyes, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing around 140 pounds.

(AP) — Authorities misidentified a deceased dog while investigating the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gene-hackman-death-things-to-know-daa7e41aca0bb85af3af5b1b358df22e">deaths of actor Gene Hackman</a>&nbsp;and his wife, pianist Betsy Arakawa, according to a pet care specialist.

The couple's German shepherd, named Bear, survived along with a second dog named Nikita, but their kelpie mix, Zinna, died, according to Joey Padilla, owner of the Santa Fe Tails pet care facility that is involved in the surviving dogs' care.

The dog that died “was always attached to Betsy at the hip and it was a beautiful relationship,” Padilla said in an email statement Tuesday. “Zinna went from being a returned shelter dog to this incredible companion under Betsy’s hand.”

Authorities have been searching for answers after the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa, whose partially mummified bodies were discovered on Feb. 26 at their Santa Fe home. Hackman and Arakawa may have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gene-hackman-found-dead-f6c106e92987aeaaab7b35c1b956a5c8">died up to two weeks earlier</a>, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said.

Authorities did not perform a necropsy on Zinna, who was found in a kennel in a bathroom closet near Arakawa, a sheriff's office spokesperson said. Investigators initially noted the discovery of a “deceased brown in color German-Shepard canine.”

Avila acknowledged that sheriff’s deputies initially misidentified the breed of the deceased dog.

“Our deputies, they don’t work with canines on a daily basis,” she said.

USA Today first reported on the mistaken identification of the dead dog.

Arakawa’s body was found with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on the bathroom countertop, while Hackman’s remains were found in the home’s entryway.

The two bodies both have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gene-hackman-betsy-arakawa-dead-investigation-f77231a7a04bb7eff5de3c391d56a031">tested negative for carbon monoxide</a>, a colorless and odorless gas that is a byproduct of fuel burned in some home appliances and can be fatal in poorly ventilated homes. No gas leaks were discovered in or around the home.

On Tuesday, the sheriff's office also said that a more extensive utility company inspection found that one burner on a stove in the house had a miniscule leak that could not be lethal.

Authorities retrieved personal items from the home, including a monthly planner and two cellphones that will be analyzed. Medical investigators are still working to clarify the cause of deaths but the results of toxicology reports aren't expected for weeks. ___

WASHINGTON (AP) — A sharply divided&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court">Supreme Court</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday rejected a Trump administration push to rebuke a federal judge who imposed a quick deadline to release billions of dollars in foreign aid.

By a 5-4 vote, the court told U.S. District Judge Amir Ali to clarify his earlier order that required the Republican administration to release&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/usaid-trump-funding-freeze-musk-lawsuit-67e4c708955a652e5e4d39ce157d6113">nearly $2 billion in aid</a>&nbsp;for work that had already been done.

Although the outcome is a short-term loss for President Donald Trump’s administration, the nonprofit groups and businesses that sued are still waiting for the money they say they are owed. One of the organizations last week was forced to lay off 110 employees as a result, according to court papers.

It’s the second time the new administration has sought and failed to persuade the Supreme Court to immediately rein in a lower-court judge in legal fights over actions taken by Trump.

Justice Samuel Alito led four conservative justices in dissent, saying Ali lacks the authority to order the payments. Alito wrote that he is stunned the court is rewarding “an act of judicial hubris and imposes a $2 billion penalty on American taxpayers.”

The court’s action leaves in place Ali’s temporary restraining order that had paused the spending freeze, Ali is holding a hearing Thursday to consider a more lasting pause.

The majority noted that the administration had not challenged Ali’s initial order, only the deadline, which in any event passed last week.

The court told Ali to “clarify what obligations the government must fulfill to ensure compliance with the temporary restraining order, with due regard for the feasibility of any compliance timelines.”

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, two conservatives, joined the three liberal justices to form a majority.

Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh joined Alito’s dissent.

The Trump administration has argued that the situation has changed because it has replaced a blanket spending freeze with individualized determinations that led to the cancellation of 5,800 U.S. Agency for International Development contracts and another 4,100 State Department grants totaling nearly $60 billion in aid.

The federal government froze foreign aid after an executive order from Trump targeting what he called wasteful programs that do not correspond to his foreign policy goals.

The lawsuit that followed claimed that the pause breaks federal law and has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/usaid-trump-funding-freeze-musk-lawsuit-67e4c708955a652e5e4d39ce157d6113">shut down funding</a>&nbsp;for even the most urgent life-saving programs abroad.

Supreme Court rejects Trump demand to freeze foreign aid

WASHINGTON  –  The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announces that U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Herbert G. Tennyson, 24, of Wichita, Kansas, killed during World War II, was accounted for on Sept. 25, 2024.

Tennyson's family recently received their full briefing on his identification, therefore, additional details on his identification can be shared.

In March 1944, Tennyson was assigned to the 320th Bombardment Squadron, 90th Bombardment Group, 5th Air Force and deployed in present day Papua New Guinea. On the morning of March 11, Tennyson, the pilot onboard a B-24D “Liberator” Heaven Can Wait departed Nadzab Strip #1, Papua New Guinea, as part of a bombing mission against enemy positions at Boram Airfield, and Awar Point, Hansa Bay, located along the northern coast of New Guinea. Observers from other aircraft in the formation reported seeing flames erupting from the bomb bay, spreading to the tail quickly. Heaven Can Wait was seen pitching up violently before banking left and crashing down into the water. It is believed anti-aircraft fire hit the plane, causing un-dropped ordnance to explode. Several aircraft circled the crash site in hopes of locating any possible survivors, but none could be seen.

Following the war, the American Graves Registration Service (AGRS), the military unit responsible for investigating and recovering missing American personnel in the Pacific Theater, conducted exhaustive searches of battle areas and crash sites in New Guinea, concluding their search in late 1948. In March 1950, a board of AGRS officials concluded they were unable to locate any remains of Tennyson and the other Heaven Can Wait crew members. They were designated as non-recoverable.

Between 2013 and 2017, the family of 2nd Lt. Kelly, Heaven Can Wait bombardier, undertook a dedicated archival research effort to collect historical documents and eyewitness accounts of the loss of the Heaven Can Wait crew. The family worked with Dr. Scott Althaus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to complete this effort and provided this documentation. In October 2017, Project Recover, a DPAA partner organization, located the wreckage of a B-24 aircraft in Hansa Bay while making sonar scans as part of a unilateral remote sensing survey effort. In 2019, a DPAA underwater investigation team (UIT) conducted several surveys of the wreckage, performing visual inspections and clearing the site of any unexploded ordnance.

From March 9 through April 13, 2023, an underwater recovery team (RT-U) excavated the crash site, where they recovered possible osseous materials and material evidence, to include life support equipment and identification tags. The recovered evidence was sent to the DPAA Laboratory for review and analysis.

To identify Tennyson’s remains, scientists from DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis, as well as material and circumstantial evidence. Additionally, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA analysis.

Tennyson’s name is recorded on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, along with others still missing from WWII. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for.

Tennyson will be buried in Wichita, Kansas, on a date yet to be determined.

Remains of WWII bomber pilot from Kansas identified

WASHINGTON (AP) — A president’s speech to Congress — even without the formal gloss of a State of the Union address — is typically a time for a call to national unity and predictable claims about the country being strong.

But that wasn’t President Donald Trump’s plan.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-speech-congress-immigration-tariffs-guests-93f6107ede260854f90c65c4bde60de8">His speech on Tuesday night</a>&nbsp;was relentlessly partisan, boasting about his election victory and criticizing Democrats for failing to recognize his accomplishments.

The hard edge reflected Trump’s steamroller approach to his second term, brushing aside opposition and demanding loyalty throughout the federal government.

Trump airs grievances and inflates achievements

Trump set a tone of division almost from his first words, calling his predecessor&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">Joe Biden</a>&nbsp;the worst president in history and chiding Democrats as so stinting in their praise of him they would not even grant him perfunctory applause.

He placed himself alongside the country’s first president, George Washington, when discussing what he said were the flood of early achievements of his second term.

He was speaking to a house divided. Republicans stood and cheered. For Democrats, it was silence, with occasional shouts of protest, with the only applause when he announced that Ukraine wanted to restart peace negotiations.

Trump leaned hard into cultural flashpoints — his opposition to affirmative action, diversity programs and transgender rights.

He inflated the scale of his victory in November, the margin of which was actually among the smallest in American history. The tenor was more that of a campaign speech than an address to Congress.

In a stunning breach of protocol and a measure of the fractious politics, one Democrat, Rep. Al Green of Texas, stood up and shouted at Trump, gesturing toward the president with his cane. He refused to sit when asked by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who ordered him removed.

Trump described Democrats as a lost cause. “There is absolutely nothing I can say to make them happy,” he said.

Trump warms on Zelenskyy after days of hammering the Ukrainian leader

Trump has been unsparing in his criticism of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

But towards the end of his address, Trump read from a letter from Zelenskyy he had received earlier in the day.

“The letter reads Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer,” Trump said. “Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians ... My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.”

It remains to be seen if the letter will mark a detente in the long-complicated Trump-Zelenskyy relationship.

Late last week, Trump and Vice President JD Vance used an Oval Office meeting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/zelenskyy-security-guarantees-trump-meeting-washington-eebdf97b663c2cdc9e51fa346b09591d">to rip Zelenskyy</a>&nbsp;for being insufficiently grateful for the billions of dollars in U.S. aid poured into Ukraine. Trump then abruptly ended the White House meeting where the deal —designed to give the U.S. access to Ukraine’s deposits of titanium, lithium, manganese and more — was supposed to be signed.

On Monday, Trump ordered a “pause” in U.S. assistance to Ukraine as he looked to dial up the pressure on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/volodymyr-zelenskyy">Zelenskyy</a>&nbsp;to engage in negotiations to end the war with Russia.

Trump blames the soaring price of eggs on Biden, not bird flu

The president gave voice to a frustration of many Americans over rising costs of groceries — particularly the skyrocketing cost of eggs, but blamed Biden instead of the bird flu.

“Joe Biden especially let the price of eggs get out of control — and we are working hard to get it back down,” Trump said.

His agriculture secretary, Brooke Rollins, said last week that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/record-egg-prices-usda-bird-flu-virus-92e9f5fbc4e0a792be484a4aee5b9c16">egg prices could still soar</a>&nbsp;more than 40% this year.

The main reason egg prices have increased to a record average of $4.95 per dozen this month is that more than 166 million birds have been slaughtered to limit the spread of bird flu that has overwhelmed flocks around the country.

The administration announced the USDA will invest another $1 billion on top of the roughly $2 billion it has already spent battling bird flu since the outbreak began in 2022.

Trump lavished praise on Elon Musk, the billionaire who he has tasked with overhauling the federal government and work force. Democrats tried to verbally fact check the president by shouting “false” at some of his assertions of success.

Musk, seated in the gallery above, stood when Republicans applauded him. Democrats held signs that said “Musk steals.”
