The TMP-Marian baseball team will be the No. 2 seed for next wek's Russell 3A Regional tournament and will open at home against Ellinwood/Stafford on Monday at 5pm at TMP.

All four of the first-round games will be hosted by the higher seed with the exception of the Russel/Victoria vs. Larned contest which will played in Larned due to damages to the Broncos field during the wind storm a few weeks ago.

The remainder of the tournament will be played at the Great Bend Sports Complex on Wednesday, May 18.

Outstanding Athlete Awards are given to the most outstanding male and female athlete. The female award in named after former principal Jack Roberts who was a strong advocate of athletics for young women and did much to advance and promote this cause.

The male award is named after three Hays High students who were killed in a car accident during their sophomore year.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Corey Seager was hitting home runs in Globe Life Field before he called the park home. The shortstop now has his first multihomer game with the Texas Rangers.

Seager snapped an 0-for-16 slump with solo homers in each of his first two at-bats, Martin Perez pitched 6 1/3 solid innings and the Rangers opened a nine-game homestand with a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

“Corey, he’s going to keep coming at you ... He doesn’t give in. And it’s every single pitch. He’s trying to do damage, he’s trying to hit the ball as hard as he can,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “It’s nice to see him get some results.”

But Seager had been hitless in the previous four games to drop his batting average to a season-low .231.

“It was just a good offensive night all around. You know, we had some chances in New York and never felt like we got that big hit," said Seager, who joined Texas over the winter on a $325 million, 10-year contract. “So to kind of get out there and get on the board early and take some walks, get some big hits, it kind of really kind of jumpstarted us.”

Texas had three consecutive singles off Brad Keller (1-3) after Seager’s two-out homer in the first, with Kole Calhoun’s two-run hit making it 3-0. The Rangers were coming off a three-game series against the Yankees when both teams had a combined five runs — New York won two of the games.

Perez (1-2) struck out six without a walk and was charged with four runs, but only one was earned. The left-hander has allowed just two earned runs over 26 1/3 innings for a 0.68 ERA his last four starts.

“Martin’s doing what Martin does. He’s pitching really well," Woodward said. “I mean, he just kind of ran out of pitches there, but I still thought he had a lot left.”

The Royals, who have lost three games in a row and eight of 10, scored the three unearned runs in the seventh with just-in third baseman Charlie Culberson making errors on consecutive plays.

Keller allowed six runs (five earned) and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings, with three strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander's season ERA went up almost a full run — from 1.74 to 2.70.

“He got better as he went. A couple of pitches he’d like to have back,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “One obviously the fastball on the home run. He gets two quick outs with good plays behind him, and then the ball got too much of the plate.”

Perez departed after 106 pitches with a 6-2 lead. He had twice in his previous three starts exited scoreless games — seven innings at Philadelphia last Wednesday, and six innings against Oakland — and left a 1-1 game against Houston after seven innings.

Royals rookie infielder Bobby Witt Jr. played his first game against the Rangers less than 15 miles from where he went to high school. The second overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft is the son of former Texas pitcher Bobby Witt, who was there with the rest of his family and plenty of friends.

The 21-year-old Witt led off and played shortstop, only his second start at short after 24 games at third base. He went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. He opened the game striking out on a nine-pitch at-bat against perez when he fouled of five pitches, one a drive down the left field line that was only feet from being a homer. The first two Rangers batters grounded out to Witt.

Royals: Salvador Perez was initially in the lineup as catcher on his 32nd birthday, but was switched to designated hitter for the third straight game. Perez has been dealing with right leg discomfort since catching the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Rangers: Catcher Mitch Garver was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, because of a right forearm flexor muscle strain. The team hopes medication and rest will ease the issue in his throwing arm. ... RHP Jon Gray, who exited his start Monday because of knee soreness, felt good Tuesday and appears on track to make his next scheduled start Saturday against Boston.

ANDOVER – The Hays High softball
team wrapped up their regular season with a split Tuesday. The Indians rallied
to beat host Andover Central 7-6 then lost to Salina South 10-5 in game two.

The Indians closed out the regular
season 13-7. They will find out Saturday who and when they play in next week’s
regionals.

Game 1: Hays 7, Andover Central 6 
The Indians scored all seven of their runs in the final two innings for their
seventh straight win.

Trailing 5-1, Dezarea Schmidt, Riley
Dreher and Lakyn Zimmerman all had RBI singles to cut the gap to 5-3.

Ashlyn Zimmer pulled Hays within a
run with an RBI single in the seventh. Aubree Thomas tied the game with a
single to left. The Indians took the lead on a Schmidt groundout . Zimmerman singled
with two outs driving in what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Jaguars stole home for a run in
the seventh but a groundout ended the game with the tying run at second base.

Thomas (7-4) went the distance in
the circle allowing five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two
walks.

Thomas, Dreher, Zimmerman, and
Zimmer all finished with two hits. Schmidt and Zimmerman both drove in two
runs.

Game 2: Salina South 10, Hays 5

The Cougars scored four runs in the bottom
of the sixth to break open a one-run game.

Hays scored three in the top of the
first only to see South get two in the bottom of the inning. The Indians added
two in the top of the second but the Cougars got four in the bottom to grab a
6-5 lead where it would remain until the sixth.

Riley Dreher (6-3)went the distance in
the circle allowing three earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and one
walk.

Dreher had three of the Indians
seven hits. Morgen Berry drove in two of their five runs.

⚾ HHS closes out regular season with sweep of Ulysses

RUSSELL – The TMP-Marian softball
team ran their winning streak to four games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep
of Russell/Victoria. The Monarchs held on to win the opener 9-7 then took game
two 14-4. 

TMP has won seven of their last nine
and improves to 10-6 on the season. They play two in Colby Thursday then close
out the regular season with a makeup doubleheader in Great Bend Friday.

The Broncos scored six runs in the
bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate before a pickoff stopped
the rally and gave the Monarchs the win.

TMP scored two in the fourth, fifth
and sixth innings to grab a 6-1 lead then tallied three in the top of the
seventh for a 9-1 lead. 

Julianna Baalmann’s two-run single gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
Hannah Garcia drove in a run with a double and Brooke Koeningsman knocked in
the second in the fifth with a triple. Garcia drove in two more runs with a
triple in the sixth to put TMP up 6-1.

The Monarchs scored on an error, an
Alexa Ryersee double and a Madison Augustine single to go up 9-1 in the
seventh.

Augustine allowed five earned runs
on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks for the win.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 14,
Russell/Victoria 4 (5 innings)

RUSSELL – The TMP-Marian softball
team ran their winning streak to four games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep
of Russell/Victoria. The Monarchs held on to win the opener 9-7 then took game
two 14-4. TMP has won seven of their last nine
and improves to 10-6 on the season. They play two in Colby Thursday then close

HAYS - The Hays High girls soccer team won their second straight Tuesday, shutting out TMP-Marian 4-0 at Hays High School. 

Katie Dinkel scored two goals for the Indians with Arely Maldonado and Madeline Martin adding the other two. Caroline Robben had two assists and Aleyia Ruder one. 

It was the Indians seventh shutout of the season as they improve to 11-3. They will close out the regular season at home against Garden City Friday. 

The Monarchs drop to 7-6. They close out their regular season at the Wichita Classical School Thursday.

NEW ORLEANS - Both Fort Hays State track and field teams remain ranked in the USTFCCCA National Rating Index heading into the final weekend of the regular season, released Tuesday. The women now rank 18th in the country, while the men are 22nd in the latest set of rankings. The men moved up one spot in the region rankings, now sitting in third amongst teams from the MIAA, NSIC and GAC conferences. The women are sixth in the region, while both teams now rank fourth in the MIAA power rankings. 👟 FHSU ranked nationally entering final week of regular season

Year number eight of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference softball and baseball championships at the Great Bend Sports Complex is in the books.
The end date was pushed back two days after weather delayed the start of the
tournament until last Friday, but the baseball title game wrapped up Monday.


The KCAC championships marked the first large tournament on the recently turfed
ballfields for Great Bend Recreation Commission Executive Director Diann
Henderson. 
"Our staff entertained very nice comments from visitors and guests," 
said Henderson. "Our teams were appreciative of the complex, even with 
the weather. They were glad we didn't have to pull tarps and sling mud. 
They really enjoyed the complex this year." 
During the winter, the Rec Commission, USD 428 and City of Great Bend teamed up
to cover a $1.37 million project to place artificial turf at the five
ballfields of the complex. 
A large USSSA baseball tournament will be hosted at the Sports Complex May 21-22,
and the Class 2-1A high school baseball state tournament will be held at the
facility the following weekend.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The end date was pushed back two days after weather delayed the start of the
tournament until last Friday, but the baseball title game wrapped up Monday.
The KCAC championships marked the first large tournament on the recently turfed
ballfields for Great Bend Recreation Commission Executive Director Diann
Henderson. 
"Our staff entertained very nice comments from visitors and guests," 
said Henderson. "Our teams were appreciative of the complex, even with 
the weather. They were glad we didn't have to pull tarps and sling mud. 
They really enjoyed the complex this year."

Collegiate tourney: Rave reviews for newly turfed Great Bend ballfields

It appears the Fort Hays State football program has picked up a big transfer. Former Hays High standout defensive end Gaven Haselhorst announced via twitter Tuesday that he will be a Tiger.

Haselhorst spent the last year at Kansas State before entering the transfer portal last month.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian boys golf team had three golfers place inside the top-10 Monday afternoon on their way to a second-place finish at their own invitational at Smoky Hill Country Club. 

Sophomore Pake Dewey won the individual title with an 11-over 82. Junior Landon Rozean finished fourth with an 84 and freshman Heuer Brungradt finished in a tie for sixth with an 89. 

Colby won the team title with a 354, three shots better than the Monarchs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler Wells pitched six strong innings to earn his first victory of the season and the Baltimore Orioles used a six-run fifth inning Monday afternoon to surge past the Kansas City Royals 6-1.

Baltimore has won four of five for the first time this season and finished its homestand 6-4. Kansas City fell to a season-high eight games under .500.

The game was a makeup of Saturday’s postponed game to cap a rain-altered series. Friday’s game was washed out and made up as part of a doubleheader the teams split Sunday.

Wells (1-2) allowed Ryan O’Hearn’s two-out RBI single in the first, but cruised through the rest of his start. He retired 16 of the last 19 batters he faced and struck out three in the longest outing of his major league career.

The 27-year-old right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and missed all of the 2019 and 2020 seasons, then pitched out of the Orioles’ bullpen as a Rule 5 pick last season. He made his sixth start Monday and threw 54 strikes among his career-high 75 pitches.

“Knowing they don’t strike out a lot, it’s really just kind of making sure I’m mixing up my pitches well, not trying to strike guys out, trying to get quick outs,” Wells said. “We have a whole infield and outfield for that.”

Kansas City has dropped seven of its past nine games and scored just 22 runs in that span. The Royals were 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position Monday.

“We have to figure out how to put crooked numbers together by just stacking hits on top of each other,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “They’re just hard to come by right now.”

The Orioles had only four hits in their fifth-inning rally against Royals starter Carlos Hernández (0-2). A walk, Anthony Bemboom’s double and Jorge Mateo’s RBI single tied it with one out. Bemboom came around when catcher MJ Melendez’s errant throw on Mateo’s steal of second sailed into center field.

Hernández was on the verge of escaping further damage when he struck out Cedric Mullins. But Trey Mancini singled in Mateo, and Hernández issued a walk and hit a batter before his wild pitch scored Mancini. Ryan Mountcastle then lined a single to score two more runs.

“That inning was a keep-the-line-moving type of attitude,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said.

Hernández allowed six runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings, striking out two.

Royals: Kansas City placed OF Edward Olivares (right quad strain) on the 10-day injured list and recalled C Sebastian Rivero from Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Rivero had served as the 27th man during Sunday’s doubleheader.

Orioles: Mountcastle was in the lineup as the designated hitter after rolling an ankle while stealing second base in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader. “Watching that again, it didn’t look good,” Hyde said. “We dodged a bullet there.”

Baltimore improved to 16-6 at Camden Yards against Kansas City since 2015. The Orioles have won six of their seven home series against the Royals in that span and also split a four-game set last year.

BALTIMORE -- Bruce Zimmermann threw six effective innings and Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 to earn a doubleheader split on Sunday.

The Royals won the opener 6-4 when Michael Taylor hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth after a pair of two-out Baltimore errors.

In the second game, Zimmermann (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

“That’s the No. 1 goal for all of the starters is to have a quality start, try to go six innings, and try to take the pressure off the bullpen every single night,” Zimmermann said. “I’m feeling really good about being able to go six innings today.”

The Orioles pounced early, scoring three runs in the first off Daniel Lynch (2-2) on a passed ball, an RBI single by Ryan Mountcastle and a sacrifice fly by Ramón Urías.

The Royals pulled to within 3-1 when Hunter Dozier hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Whit Merrifield.

Tyler Nevin added an RBI single in the fourth that boosted the Orioles’ lead to 4-1. Dozier cut the margin to 4-2 with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Keegan Akin pitched two scoreless innings for the Orioles and Dillon closed out the ninth to pick up his first save and fourth of his career.

Orioles outfielder Austin Hays went 5 for 7 over the two games and leads the team with nine multi-hit games.

“When he swings at strikes, he hits the ball,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “Right now, I feel like he’s a little more patient, he’s getting in good counts and he’s taking some walks. He’s not trying to do too much.”

👟 FHSU men place fifth at MIAA Outdoor Championships

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team finished fourth at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships with 82 team points, tied for the program's best finish at the outdoor league meet. The Tigers picked up two more event victories and four All-MIAA performances on Sunday, giving FHSU three MIAA champions and five All-MIAA honorees for the week. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;both added another MIAA Championship to their trophy case. Holman won the 100m dash by a mere .003 seconds with a time of 11.57 for her fourth league title. Holman later placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.02 to add five more team points. Hart grabbed her third MIAA title and her fourth All-MIAA honor with another win in the high jump. EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team finished fourth at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships with 82 team points, tied for the program's best finish at the outdoor league meet. The Tigers picked up two more event victories and four All-MIAA performances on Sunday, giving FHSU three MIAA champions and five All-MIAA honorees for the week. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;both added another MIAA Championship to their trophy case. Holman won the 100m dash by a mere .003 seconds with a time of 11.57 for her fourth league title. Holman later placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.02 to add five more team points. Hart grabbed her third MIAA title and her fourth All-MIAA honor with another win in the high jump. Rossi ran a time of 58.54 seconds to top the 400-meter hurdle prelim field. She shattered her own school record set earlier this season. She became the first FHSU woman to post a sub-one minute time in the event. Her previous record was 1:00.17. Her time Saturday is third best in the nation based off the national provisional list entering the weekend. She also turned in a personal best time of 13.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to finish second in the prelims, setting up an opportunity to score big points for the Tigers in both hurdle events on Sunday. Kuffel just recently broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase record and did it again on Saturday evening in her winning effort. She shaved just over three seconds off her previous best, running 10:47.30. Kuffel won the race by over four seconds. She was one of three with provisional times in the race and generated 10 points for the Tigers. Stanley, Clark, and Faber generated 14 points for the FHSU men in the pole vault. Stanley secured an All-MIAA finish with a clearance of 17'0" for third place. Clark cleared the same height, but took one extra attempt to do so and finished in fourth. Faber cleared 16'4". Pakkebier and Schmidt combined to give FHSU 10 points. Pakkebier turned in a fourth-place finish in the decathlon with a total of 6,345 points. Schmidt was fourth in the 10,000 meters in 30:23.66. Bradley added four points for the Tigers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a fifth-place finish. He ran a time of 9:09.48. Savolt generated points for the Tiger women in two events. Rossi ran a time of 58.54 seconds to top the 400-meter hurdle prelim field. She shattered her own school record set earlier this season. She became the first FHSU woman to post a sub-one minute time in the event. Her previous record was 1:00.17. Her time Saturday is third best in the nation based off the national provisional list entering the weekend. She also turned in a personal best time of 13.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to finish second in the prelims, setting up an opportunity to score big points for the Tigers in both hurdle events on Sunday. Kuffel just recently broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase record and did it again on Saturday evening in her winning effort. She shaved just over three seconds off her previous best, running 10:47.30. Kuffel won the race by over four seconds. She was one of three with provisional times in the race and generated 10 points for the Tigers. Stanley, Clark, and Faber generated 14 points for the FHSU men in the pole vault. Stanley secured an All-MIAA finish with a clearance of 17'0" for third place. Clark cleared the same height, but took one extra attempt to do so and finished in fourth. Faber cleared 16'4". Pakkebier and Schmidt combined to give FHSU 10 points. HAYS – Life Prep Academy scored three runs in the top of the
sixth inning to retake the lead and beat the Hays High baseball team 6-3 in the
final game of the Western Plains Diamond Classic Saturday at Hays High School.
The Fire went 4-0 to win the title and have now won 14-straight games. The
Indians finshed 1-3.

After the Fire (20-7) scored two in the top of the first, the Indians (10-8)&nbsp; answered with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Garrett
Wellbrock drove in Dylan Dreiling with the first run on a groundout to first. Carson
Spray tied the game with a two-out single to center which scored pinch-runner
Brett Schumacher. Wellbrock then put Hays up 3-2 when he scored a squeeze play
with two outs.

Life Prep got the lead back for good with three the next
innings. The first came on a sacrifice to tie the game 3-3. They took the lead
following an error on a grounder to third then added the final run on a two-out
single the center

The Fire tacked on an insurance run on a throwing error in the
seventh.

Life Prep starter Ethian Samaniego held the Indians to three
runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks over four innings. Maestro
Saunders pitched three scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win.

Toby May allowed one earned run on four hits with one walk and
took the loss in relief in his varsity debut after starter Carson Spray allowed
two runs on four hits over four innings.
