HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team jumped in front by five runs through the first five innings before falling to Rogers State Saturday afternoon, 15-10. The Tigers (9-13, 2-7 MIAA) and Hillcats (14-7, 3-5 MIAA) will now face off in the rubber game of the series Sunday (March 12) beginning at 1 p.m. at Larks Park. Tiger starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/zach-berg/6803">Zach Berg</a>&nbsp;threw one bad pitch his first time through the order, giving up a solo home run in the top of the first before retiring six batters in a row. The Tigers quickly took control with a two-RBI single from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/elliott-herrmann/7260">Elliott Herrmann</a>&nbsp;in the home half of the inning. Fort Hays State doubled its lead to 3-1 when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/isaiah-ural/7272">Isaiah Ural</a>&nbsp;clubbed a no-doubt home run with one out in the third inning. Rogers State tacked on three runs in the fourth, including two unearned runs, to take a momentary 4-3 lead. MANHATTAN – A last-second shot lifted the Moundridge
Wildcats to a 56-55 win over the TMP-Marian Monarchs in the 2A semifinals Friday
in Manhattan.

The Monarchs were able to hang tough in the first quarter despite
the Wildcats knocking down five three pointers. 

TMP had a brief 4-3 lead and led again at 9-7 after a Dylan
Werth three-point play. Then, with TMP up 11-8, Moundridge hit four straight 3s
to build a 20-14 lead before Joey Mindrup hit a three pointer for TMP, cutting
the lead to 20-17.

After the Monarchs closed within one on a Kade Harris
floater at 20-19, Moundridge answered with a 7-0 run to go up 27-19.

TMP answered with an 8-0 run, tying the game at 27. The
game was tied again at 29 before Moundridge took a 31-29 lead into the halftime
break.

Werth tied the game at 31 to open the second half.

While Moundridge maintained the lead throughout the third
quarter, Luke Rome scored 10 of his career-high 26 points in the second quarter
as TMP trailed 45-41 through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, TMP was dealt a huge blow with just
over 5:30 to play, when senior guard Kade Harris injured his knee and did not
return.

With Harris out, Rome and the Monarchs answered in a big way. They came all the way back to take a one-point lead at 55-54, on a Rome
jumper with just nine second left.

But Moundridge scored on a game-winner by Henry Hecox that lifted
Moundridge to the 56-55 victory.

Rome led all scorers with 26 points and Werth added 18
points for TMP.

The Monarchs will face Medicine Lodge in the third-place
game at 12 p.m. The Indians lost to Wichita Independent in the first boys semifinal
game 57-42.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jalen Wilson had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Gradey Dick made a couple of crucial baskets during a second-half run that gave Kansas control, and the third-ranked Jayhawks went on to beat Iowa State 71-58 on Friday night to reach the Big 12 Tournament title game.

Dick finished with 15 points for the top-seeded Jayhawks (27-6), who fell behind early in the second half before the defending champs rallied to reach Saturday night's title game against seventh-ranked Texas or No. 22 TCU.

The Jayhawks were once again without Hall of Fame coach Bill Self, who is recovering after a hospital trip Wednesday night for what doctors with the University of Kansas Health System would only call “a standard procedure."

Longtime assistant Norm Roberts, serving as the acting coach, said Self addressed the Jayhawks remotely during breakfast and was “doing a lot better." It's still unclear whether he will be available to coach next week, when they begin defense of the NCAA title they won with a stirring comeback win over North Carolina last April.

Jaren Holmes had 16 points to lead the No. 5 seed Cyclones (19-13). Robert Jones finished with 11.

The first half between two teams very familiar with each other was sloppy and disjointed. They combined to commit 20 turnovers, some of them byproduct of tight defense but many entirely unforced.

Wilson got off to a hot start, hitting a trio of 3-pointers among his first four shots. The Cyclones weathered the barrage and were still within 29-25 late in the half, but Wilson's basket in the closing minute and another turnover that led to a runout dunk by KJ Adams sent the regular-season champs to the locker room with a 33-25 lead.

The Jayhawks' turnover trouble continued after the break, and Iowa State used a 10-2 run out of the locker room and another spurt moments later to take a 39-38 lead — its first of the game — with just under 15 minutes to go.

Yet the Jayhawks showed again the poise and precision that has made them so good come March.

Wilson answered Iowa State with a couple of free throws, starting the Jayhawks' own 10-2 run to regain control. Backup big man Ernest Udeh Jr. threw down a thunderous dunk off a nifty assist from Dajuan Harris Jr., who also had 11 points, and the lead unspooled again as Kansas fans began to drown out their Cyclone counterparts.

The Jayhawks were never threatened down the stretch as they clinched their spot in the title game.

Iowa State has adjusted to life without 3-point specialist Caleb Grill, who was dismissed from the team last week. Gabe Kalscheur and Holmes, who struggled from the field Friday night, have become an prolific backcourt duo that could cause some fits in the NCAA Tournament.

Kansas has played well while Roberts has been the acting coach. Along with two wins in the Big 12 Tournament, it went 4-0 with him on the bench when Self served a school-imposed four-game suspension to start the season. That included a win over Duke in the Champions Classic.

Kansas will play for the fourth time in the last five championship games Saturday night at T-Mobile Center.

The duo has compiled 20 team points so far, ranking Fort&nbsp;Hays State 15th&nbsp;in the team standings. Fourth-seeded Lindsey started his day against Owen Butler of Indianapolis. Lindsey secured a takedown 45 seconds into the first period and accumulated over two minutes of riding time. HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team opened its series against Rogers State with an 11-5 win Friday afternoon at Larks Park.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/daniel-bebee/7252">Daniel Bebee</a>&nbsp;(2-0) picked the win after a complete game, the first nine-inning complete game for a Tiger since 2017 (Sam Capps vs NWOSU, 3/22/17).

The victory also ended an 11-game home field losing streak for the Tigers dating back to last season. Both teams had things rolling offensively out of the gates, with each side plating two runs in the first, one run in the second and two more in the third. RSU (13-6, 2-5 MIAA) manufactured its two runs in the top of the first following three singles and good baserunning before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/trey-degarmo/7257">Trey DeGarmo</a>&nbsp;opened the home half of the inning with a double to left. A leadoff double from Stephens and two walks loaded the bases for the Tigers, but RSU kept the game close by getting out of the inning unscathed. Bebee allowed a single in the sixth before starting a stretch of nine-straight batters retired, including three more strikeouts. The Tiger bats backed up their pitcher in the sixth, pushing across five two-out runs on five hits and two walks. Standing at the plate with two men on and two out, Olivas doubled the lead with a single up the middle. Scott followed with a double to left center, driving in one run, before DeGarmo plated a pair with a single up the middle. He completed the day with a clearance of 6-6.25 in the high jump, less than one inch shy of his PR, to add 794 points. Competing in the second of five heats in the 400m prelims, Albright turned in a time of 47.77 to finish third in his heat. He ranked fourth with 10 runners yet to compete, but only two of those turned in times faster than Albright's, giving the junior the sixth-fastest time on the day and a spot in the finals. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Everything seemed to be going against TCU entering the Big 12 Tournament. The Horned Frogs were coming off a lopsided loss to Oklahoma, they'd drawn a quarterfinal matchup against Kansas State for what felt like a road game, and some off-the-court issues threatened to become a distraction.

Mike Miles and Chuck O'Bannon made sure none of that mattered.

The duo hit four 3-pointers apiece and each had 22 points, silencing the heavily pro-Wildcats crowd and leading the No. 22 Horned Frogs to an 80-67 victory on Thursday night to reach the tournament semifinals.

TCU will face seventh-ranked Texas, which routed Oklahoma State in its quarterfinal, on Friday night.

“We all came together, knew what we needed to do,” Miles said. “When you make shots, everything is better. Chuck started to make shots. I started to make shots. And it gave us energy on the defensive end.”

TCU played without center Eddie Lampkin Jr., who posted screenshots on social media a day earlier of text messages that appeared to accuse coach Jamie Dixon of player mistreatment and “racial comments.” Dixon and the school have declined to comment on the posts other than to say Lampkin had stepped away from the team.

JaKobe Coles added eight points and Emanuel Miller seven for the sixth-seeded Horned Frogs (21-11), who had been beaten by the Wildcats in four of the past five tournaments but will now play for a spot in the title game.

“We didn't really take any bad shots all game long. I would struggle to find one or two,” Dixon said. “We did a lot of shooting yesterday, we did a lot of shooting these last two days. The guys worked so hard, they focused, they were ready. My coaches came in after warmups and said, 'They’re ready. They're ready to play a good team.'”

Keyontae Johnson had 14 points and seven boards to lead the No. 3 seed Wildcats (23-9), though he fouled out with more than six minutes left in the game. Desi Sills also had 14 points and Markquis Nowell finished with 11.

“This is on me,” Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said. “I didn't do a very good job of preparing these guys for how physical and with what force people play with in the Big 12 Tournament. And that will not happen again.”

The Wildcats got off to the the hot start, buoyed by a partisan crowd that had traveled down Interstate 70 to make its voice heard inside T-Mobile Center. But the Wildcats began to struggle with turnovers — 11 in the first half alone — and that allowed the Horned Frogs time enough to find their footing.

It was Miles who not only calmed them down but gave them a big offensive boost. The all-conference guard hit two early 3s and had 12 first-half points, helping TCU take a 37-32 lead into the locker room.

Johnson, the Wildcats' leading scorer, took an inadvertent elbow to his right eye and went to the locker room in the closing seconds of the first half. The Florida transfer appeared to have sutures on his brow when he returned with the rest of the team for the start of the second, though they didn't seem to bother him.

Good thing, too. Johnson's 3-pointers were all that kept Kansas State in the game for a while.

Miles and O'Bannon simply wouldn't miss, though. During one scorching stretch of five trips down the floor, Miles bookended a 3-pointer by O'Bannon with two 3s of his own, and after a miss by Micah Peavy, O'Bannon hit another 3 to give the Horned Frogs a 66-51 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

The Horned Frogs were never threatened the rest of the way.

“Every guy gave us good minutes and that's hard to do against a really good team,” Dixon said, “so I'm proud of them and how they played. We did what we wanted to do. We played really unselfish and good basketball.”

TCU had huge advantages in turnovers and second-chance points, and along with 11-of-25 shooting from the arc, the Wildcats simply couldn't keep up. It was reminiscent of the Horned Frogs' 82-68 win over Kansas State in January.

Kansas State can rarely overcome an off night from Nowell, its do-it-all guard. But he was just 1 of 9 on 3-pointers, missing several wild shots from well beyond the arc, and had an uncharacteristic five turnovers.

The Horned Frogs play the second-seeded Longhorns on Friday night for a spot in the title game.

The Wildcats head home to await their NCAA Tournament seed on Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Playing without&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bill-self-kansas-jayhawks-big-12-782eaae1c65322c7a106eb1850159e1e">ailing coach Bill Self</a>&nbsp;on the sideline, third-ranked Kansas turned to big offensive performances from Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris Jr. along with some stingy defense to pull away from West Virginia 75-61 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament.

Wilson had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Harris had 13 points with eight assists, as the top-seeded Jayhawks (26-6) began the defense of their tournament crown by knocking off the Mountaineers for the third time this season.

They will play fifth-seeded Iowa State, which beat Baylor earlier in the day, in Friday night's semifinals.

Erik Stevenson had 13 points to lead the No. 8 seed Mountaineers (19-14), who likely secured an NCAA bid with an opening win over Texas Tech. Tre Mitchell and Joe Toussaint added 11 points apiece and Emmitt Matthews Jr. had 10.

Gradey Dick had 18 points for the Jayhawks. KJ Adams finished with 13.

Kansas officials announced about five hours before tipoff that Self was being treated at the University of Kansas Health System for an undisclosed illness. The 60-year-old Hall of Fame coach was present for Wednesday's practice at T-Mobile Center and appeared to be in normal condition when speaking with reporters.

The school declined to provide details of the illness but said “Self is doing well and receiving great care.”

His longtime assistant, Norm Roberts, led the team against the Mountaineers. Roberts filled a similar role early in the season, while Self was serving a school-imposed four-game suspension, and the Jayhawks won each of the games.

They trailed midway through the half Thursday, but the Mountaineers got sloppy on offense, turning it over 11 times over the first 20 minutes. That allowed the Jayhawks to reel off an 18-2 run and take a 31-23 lead into the locker room.

West Virginia got within 35-30 early in the second half, but it struggled to make stops. The Jayhawks scored on seven consecutive trips down floor at one point. And after a tough bucket by Adams made it 60-48 with 8 minutes to go, the springy forward slammed down Harris' ally-oop pass from just inside the midcourt line to punctuate the run.

Harris hit big man Ernest Udeh Jr. for another alley-oop jam a few minutes later as the Jayhawks cruised to the win.

West Virginia was hanging precariously on the NCAA Tournament bubble in late February before a strong finish, beginning with a win over Oklahoma State and featuring wins over Iowa State, Kansas State and Texas Tech. In fact, the only two losses by the Mountaineers since Feb. 18 came against the Jayhawks.

Kansas bounced back nicely from a regular season-ending 75-59 loss at No. 7 Texas, which could have zapped much of the momentum the reigning national champs had built with a seven-game win streak.

The Jayhawks will play the Cyclones on Friday night for a spot in the championship game.

The Mountaineers head home to await their NCAA Tournament seed.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self will miss the Big 12 Tournament after going to the emergency room Wednesday night for what doctors called “a standard procedure,” and it's uncertain whether he will be back for the NCAA Tournament.

Dr. Steve Stites, the chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Health System, said Self did not have a heart attack, which some outlets had reported, but that he remained a patient Thursday. Stites also did not describe the nature or extent of the procedure, though Self is expected to make a full recovery.

“We didn't really let the guys know until this morning because nothing was concrete what was going on,” said Kansas assistant Norm Roberts, who led the No. 3 Jayhawks to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-west-virginia-big-12-98660b6b6b3faef70391aa1b7524f715">a 78-61 win over West Virginia</a>&nbsp;in the quarterfinal round.

MANHATTAN – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys basketball team is headed back
to the state semifinals for a third straight season after they defeated Horton
in the opening round of the 2A state tournament Wednesday 52-27.

The Monarchs (22-2) and Chargers (15-9) traded a pair of 5-0 runs to open
the game for the first of two ties in the first quarter at 5-5. The second time
the two teams were tied was at 10-10 with one minute left in the first quarter.


But on the next TMP possession Joey Mindrup connected on his
second three of the first quarter putting TMP up 13-10 and sparking a 21-3 run
that covered the end of the first quarter, the entire second quarter and the
first four minutes of the third quarter. A total of 12 minutes and 50 second of
game time.

The Monarchs led 31-13 with four minutes left in the third quarter
as a result of the run and the Chargers offensive struggles.

Dylan Werth, who played just two minutes in the first
quarter because of foul trouble, scored all of his game-high 14 points in the
second half as the Monarchs closed out the 52-27 victory, their 21st
consecutive.

Kade Harris added 10 points for the Monarchs.

TMP will take on Moundridge in the 6 p.m. semifinal game Friday
in Manhattan. They defeated St. Marys 63-31.

The other semifinal game will feature the top-seed Wichita
Independent and the No. 5 seed Medicine Lodge. 

Independent beat St. Marys Colgan 55-46 and Medicine Lodge
knocked off the four-seed Bennington 56-45.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/morgan-brasser/6948">Morgan Brasser</a>&nbsp;of Fort Hays State was named the MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. She tied the lowest score ever shot in FHSU Women's Golf history (69) in her second round, matching a record set by Shelby White, and finished fourth individually at the Diffee Ford Lincoln Invitational in Oklahoma City. Brasser shot rounds of 75 (+4) and 69 (-2) to finish at 2-over par overall. Brasser had a seven-hole stretch that included five birdies during the second round and she carded seven birdies overall for the tournament. She tied two and topped three individuals in the Golfstat Division II rankings of the seven total individuals with rankings in the field. Brasser now has five top 10 finishes this season in the seven tournaments played by FHSU. The tournament consisted of 96 players. For Brasser, it was her third career sub-par round in competition and second of the 2022-23 season. She has now been named the MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week three times throughout the season, twice in the fall and now after her first tournament of the spring.&nbsp;&nbsp;
