ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have finally knocked the Kansas City Chiefs from their throne in the AFC West.

After falling behind in every game this season, the Broncos (11-2) never trailed in cruising past the Las Vegas Raiders 24-17 on Sunday for their 10th consecutive victory. The Chiefs (6-7) lost on Sunday night, ensuring someone other than Kansas City — either Denver or the second-place Los Angeles Chargers — would win the AFC West for the first time in 10 years.

Although Sean Payton made bumping the Chiefs from their lofty perch a top priority, he was in no celebratory mood over K.C.'s downfall.

“Everything right now has that ‘work in progress’ sign,'” Payton said Monday, adding, "The focus gets so inwardly driven to our own team. I recognize that a team that's won the division for however many straight years won't win the division this year. But it's more important to focus on, ‘All right, how do we finish this next quarter pole this season, starting with a real good team in Green Bay?’”

Win out, and the Broncos will have both their first division crown and the AFC's No. 1 seed for the first time in a decade — they hold the tiebreaker over the Patriots (11-2). They're the league's only team that's unbeaten at home this season and they have three of their final four games in Denver.

Denver's next two games are against division leaders in the Packers (9-3-1) and Jaguars (9-4), and they close out at home against the Chargers, who beat them 23-20 in Week 3 and are 3-0 against Denver and Payton under Jim Harbaugh.

Those three teams are a combined 11-5 on the road so far.

The Broncos' last road game comes Christmas night at Kansas City, where the Chiefs are 5-2 and where the Broncos haven't won since 2015.

Winning 10 in a row, nine of them requiring comebacks, has built up a callous as the Broncos navigate this daunting stretch over the final month.

“I think there's a confidence in your team, but there's also a respect each week for the opponent,” Payton said. "And then there's also a formula that your team knows is necessary because it's happened. The formula of putting a good Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in — many say the games are won on those three days before the games are ever played — and so I would say we're a more experienced team having had that success, having had some tough games, close games.

"We're a smarter team today relative to understanding the fine line in our league.”

The Broncos' run game, which had struggled following J.K. Dobbins' foot injury that required surgery. Rookie R.J. Harvey led a 152-yard effort with 75 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. For good measure, he led the team with six receptions for 25 yards. Jaleel McLaughlin added 22 yards on four carries and fullback Adam Prentice ran twice for 22 yards. Overall, the Broncos averaged a healthy 4.9 yards a carry.

OK, the Broncos are great at comebacks. Now they have to work on their close-outs. They had a comfortable 24-7 lead Sunday before allowing backup quarterback Kenny Pickett to lead the Raiders to 10 points, including a last-second field goal. The only reason Dan Carlson had a chance at a field goal on the game's final play was a boneheaded move by safety Brandon Jones, who drew a delay-of-game penalty for not allowing receiver Tyler Lockett to get up after a 26-yard gain. That penalty stopped the clock with 5 seconds remaining. “We’re going to run the clock out,” Payton said. “That wasn’t real smart.”

Denver's offense. Breaking from their trend of three-and-outs that stresses a dominant defense, Bo Nix &amp; Co. put together three extra-long drives, including an opening possession tone-setter that covered 81 yards in 14 plays and chewed up 8 minutes, 54 seconds. Their first drive after halftime was a 14-play, 86-yard masterpiece that ate up 9:13, and in the fourth quarter they put together a 19-play, 85-yard drive that took 10:17. That left them with a time-of-possession advantage of 39:03 to 20:57.

Without a loss since Sept. 21, there's really nobody whose stock is falling in Denver.

DT D.J. Jones (ankle) and TE Nate Adkins (knee) did not play.

—10-game winning streak is the Broncos' longest since they won 11 in a row in 2012.

—16-4 record over their last 20 regular-season games, the best mark in the NFL in that span.

—40-40 Evan Engram had a pair of receptions Sunday, giving him 40 catches for the season. He joined Jeremy Shockey (2002-10) as the only tight ends in league history with 40 or more receptions in each of their first nine seasons in the NFL.

The Broncos begin their brutal stretch run by hosting the Packers, who just took over the lead in the NFC North with a 28-21 win over the Chicago Bears for their fourth straight victory.

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association released its first regular-season boys wrestling rankings Tuesday and Hays High is ranked ninth in Class 5A and has four individual ranked. Gaven Deneault is third at 106, Jonathan Rigler is third at 190, Jaxson Chartier is sixth at 215 and Tanner Geist is sixth at 285.

The Hays girls are ranked seventh in Class 5A and also has four individual ranked. Timber Lovewell is second at 145, Lexi Barnett is fourth at 155, Reese Vehige is fifth at 130 and Eleanor Stoffel is sixth at 190.

The Norton boys are ranked No. 1 in 3-2-1A, Hoxie is third, Smith Center sixth and Russell seventh. Individually, Trego senior Aaron Samson is ranked No. 1 at 150.

The Russell girls are No. 1 with Norton second, Plainville third, Oakley fourth, Trego seventh and Stockton 10th. Russell has five ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes.

GREAT BEND – Hays High’s boys’ swim team benefitted from six first-place finishes as well as numerous other top-four placings to win the Great Bend Invitational Tuesday.

Seniors Karsen Flaska and Chase Zadina each were part of three championship finishes, and junior Cedric Durr recorded two first places, to help the Indians score 482 points – nearly 100 more than second-place Hutchinson.

Another bright spot for the Indians was finishing in front of all four fellow Western Athletic Conference teams, including three-time defending WAC champion Garden City.

Hays High actually would have pushed its point total over 500 had it not been for a disputed call for the Indians’ No. 1 200-yard medley relay team.

A judge ruled a swimmer leaving the line too early, resulting in disqualification of the relay team that had finished first in the event, which would have produced 40 points. A formal protest with video proved futile, but in the long run, it didn’t matter.

Zadina, Flaska and Durr combined to win five individual events. That trio there joined senior Jude Hileman for a championship finish in the 400y freestyle relay to close out the meet.

The Indians also were able to enjoy more depth than in recent years. Even swimmers in their first year with the team, including a couple of freshmen, recording top-six finishes.

That has helped the team finish in the top two in team scoring in its first two meets this season.

The Indians will try to carry momentum from their early-season success into Saturday when they compete at the Wichita Southeast meet.

HAYS - Hays High opened Western Athletic Conference play by hosting Liberal on Tuesday evening.

Girls:&nbsp;#6 Hays 66, #4-6A Liberal 34 Hays High hit their first eight field goals on their way to a 66-34 victory over Liberal.

Hays (4-0, 1-0) took a 4-0 lead over the first two minutes of the game with Liberal cut the deficit in half with a pair of free throws. The Indians rattled of the next 14 points of the game for an 18-2 advantage with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter. The teams exchanged free throws in the final minute of the frame leaving Hays with a 19-4 lead.

Liberal's (3-1, 0-1) first made field goal didn't occur until the 6:20 mark of the second quarter. Prior to that three pointer Hays build their lead to 26-4. The swelled to 24 in the first before settling at 34-11 at halftime.

Liberal outscored Hays 21-16 in the third. Hays saw their lead go from 22 down to 14 on a 11-3 run by Liberal with less than three minutes left in the quarter. The Indians responded with a 8-4 spurt to end the quarter with a 50-32 advantage.

The fourth quarter belonged to Hays. The Indians outscored Liberal 16-2 over the eight minutes. The last 2:33 with a continuous clock for the final of 66-34.

Hays forced 34 turnovers, the same total of points for Liberal. The Indians allowed just ten total field goals. Hays has won 20 consecutive WAC games.

Boys:&nbsp;Hays 64, Liberal 44 Hays (3-1, 1-0) outscored Liberal (0-4, 0-1) in each of the first three quarters to build a big lead and win 64-44 to open conference play.

The two teams were tied four times through the first four minutes of the game. Hays took the lead for good on an 8-0 run grab the lead for good. The Indians took an eight point lead into the second quarter when Liberal would make one more run at the lead.

The Redskins started the quarter on a 7-2 spurt that closed the gap down to 24-21. Hays responded with a 14-3 run that four different players contributed to. Leading 38-24, Hays saw Liberal hit a three pointer in the final thirty seconds for a 38-27 halftime lead.

The Indians used an 18-5 third quarter to put the game away for good. Hays didn't allow Liberal to score on back-to-back possession for the entire quarter building their lead to 56-32 at the end of three.

Thirteen players saw time for Hays as the fourth quarter closed with a 64-44 victory for the Indians.

Dawson Ruder scored 24 points in a second consecutive game. Izaac Fox recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Hays heads to Junction City on Friday for their first road test of the season.

🏀 Hays opens WAC play with sweep of Liberal

LILBURN, Ga. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to No. 8 in this week's WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday (Dec. 9) by the coaches organization.

Now 7-1 on the year, the Tigers picked up 408 points in the voting process, seven behind No. 7 Nova Southeastern and just 12 back of their next opponent, No. 6 Pittsburg State.

This is the sixth time in program history that the Tigers have been ranked No. 8 in the coaches poll. The Tigers are 8-0 when ranked eighth in the country, including a 6-0 record in home games. FHSU was twice ranked No. 8 last season, going 4-0 during those two weeks.

Fort Hays State is 192-49 all-time when ranked in the WBCA poll, including a 138-29 record when ranked inside the top 10. The Tigers have now been ranked in 125 separate releases of the WBCA Poll since joining the DII ranks in 1991. FHSU has been included in the top 10 84 times.

The Tigers will play at home for the first time all season on Saturday (Dec. 13) when FHSU hosts the sixth-ranked Gorillas in a non-conference battle. It will be the latest home opener on record for the program.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Fort Hays State had three players named to the D2CCA All-America Team for the 2025 season on Tuesday. Elias Ovelar Semeniuk was a first-team selection at forward, Payton Roehrich was a second-team selection at goalkeeper, and Dimitry Tchantcheu was a third-team selection at defender. The three selections matches the most for FHSU on the D2CCA All-America team in a season in program history, also occurring in 2018.

Ovelar Semeniuk is just the second player in program history to earn a first-team selection on an All-America team. He joins 2018 D2CCA National Player of the Year Santiago Agudelo as the only two Tigers to receive that distinction. Ovelar Semeniuk was named the Central Region Player of the Year and he was also the GAC/MIAA Offensive Player of the Year in 2025. He was also named a United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region selection for the second-straight year. He enters the NCAA national semifinals with 15 goals on the season, which ranks second nationally. He has a total of 35 points for the season, adding five assists to his team-leading 15 goals.

Roehrich has made a big impact in his first year of college, becoming just the second goalkeeper in FHSU program history to receive All-America honors. He has a new FHSU record 11 individual shutouts for the season, but started all five games in which Tiger keepers recorded combined shutouts. He was both a United Soccer Coaches and D2CCA All-Central Region selection, the GAC/MIAA Newcomer of the Year, and an all-conference first team selection. In addition to 11 shutouts, Roehrich holds a 0.40 goals against average and .862 save percentage, which all rank among the top four nationally.

Tchantcheu had his season cut short by injury with just one game to go in the regular season, but by helping FHSU produce 13 shutouts over the first 17 matches of the season he still earned the nod for a third-team selection. Several reserves have stepped up in his absence during the postseason, but he was key in helping the Tigers produce their most shutouts in a season and limit opponents to an average of just 7.3 shots per contest.

Fort Hays State has now had five All-America selections within Alex Nichols' first two seasons as head coach. Tadhg Walsh (midfielder) and Marcos German (defender) earned the distinction last year.

⚽ Ovelar Semeniuk, Roehrich, and Tchantcheu named to D2CCA All-America team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State had five players named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region Team on Tuesday. Earning the honors for 2025 were forward Elias Ovelar Semeniuk, goalkeeper Payton Roehrich, midfielder Tadhg Walsh, and defenders Dimitry Tchantcheu and Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye.

Semeniuk adds to his collection of honors for 2025 after being named the D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year and the GAC/MIAA Offensive Player of the Year. He was a first-team selection on both the all-conference and all-region teams for both entities. Entering the national semifinals this week, he has 15 goals for the season, which ranks second nationally just two back of the lead. With five assists in addition to his goals scored, he has 35 points for the season. He is now a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region selection.

Earning the honors for 2025 were forward Elias Ovelar Semeniuk, goalkeeper Payton Roehrich, midfielder Tadhg Walsh, and defenders Dimitry Tchantcheu and Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye.Semeniuk adds to his collection of honors for 2025 after being named the D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year and the GAC/MIAA Offensive Player of the Year. He was a first-team selection on both the all-conference and all-region teams for both entities. Entering the national semifinals this week, he has 15 goals for the season, which ranks second nationally just two back of the lead. With five assists in addition to his goals scored, he has 35 points for the season. He is now a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region selection.Roehrich has made a huge impact in his first year at FHSU. The Tiger goalkeeper was recently named a D2CCA All-Central Region First Team selection and the GAC/MIAA Newcomer of the Year. He was also an all-conference first team selection. Roehrich holds a 0.40 goals against average, .862 save percentage, and 11 shutouts for the season, which all rank among the top five nationally.Walsh continues to add to his long list of accomplishments at FHSU, earning a United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region selection for the second-straight year. He was the GAC/MIAA Midfielder of the Year in 2025 and has 14 points heading into the national semifinals with four goals and six assists. He is a four-time All-GAC/MIAA selection and he was a D2CCA All-America Second Team selection a season ago.Tchantcheu adds another all-region selection for the season after being named to the D2CCA All-Central Region First Team as well. He had his season cut short by injury with just one game to go in the regular season and helped FHSU produce 13 shutouts over the first 17 matches in 2025. He was key in helping the Tigers produce their most shutouts in a season and limit opponents to an average of just 7.3 shots per contest.Ndiaye adds another all-region selection for the season as well after being named to the D2CCA All-Central Region Team. TMP-Marian's Carson Liles was named to the 1A team as a punter/kicker.Other members of the Mid-Continent League honored include Smith Center offensive lineman Kharson Montgomery, Plainville offensive lineman Ryddik Bethel,&nbsp;The KFBCA is composed of only 11-Man coaches. The Hays High boys’ swim team picked up right where it left off last season when it broke two school records at the Class 5-1A State Championships.

The Indians recorded three state-consideration times in their season opener last Thursday in Salina and in the process, finished second as a team.

Nearly every swimmer scored points for Hays High, which finished with a whopping 399 points – nearly 100 more than reigning Western Athletic Conference champion Garden City. Haysville-Campus claimed the team title with 472 points.

Haysville-Campus claimed the team title with 472 points.Several HHS swimmers placed in the top six in four events, led by senior Karsen Flaska with three first-place finishes. He won the 500-yard freestyle and 200y individual medley – in a 2:23.87 state-consideration (SC) time – while also swimming the first leg of the championship 200y medley relay (1:55.21 SC).Flaska also helped the 400y freestyle place second with another state-consideration time of 3:51.12.Joining Flaska on both those relay teams were senior Chase Zadina and junior Cedric Durr, all returnees from the foursome that set school records in the 400y freestyle (3:30.5) and 200y freestyle (1:34.39) at state last year.At Salina, Zadina also placed second in the 100y freestyle and third in the 100y butterfly, while Durr also was third in the 50yfreestyle and fourth in the 100y butterfly.Completing the first-place 200y medley relay foursome for HHS was senior Noah Schaeffer, who also helped the 200y freestyle relay finish third along with classmates Seth Burkholder, Maison Desaire and Jude Hileman.Hileman also swam a leg on the runner-up 400y freestyle relay team and also placed third in the 100y backstroke and fourth in the 200y individual medley.Completing the Indians’ list of top-six finishes was Schaeffer, sixth in the 100y breaststroke.The Indians will return to action today at Great Bend.
