🏐 Rosters set for annual Northwest Kansas All-Star match

INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer is ranked No. 6 in the second edition of the NCAA Central Region Rankings, released on Wednesday (Nov. 1). This is the first release with rankings assigned to the teams as the top 10 teams under consideration were listed last week alphabetically. The list of 10 teams can change week-to-week as future results affect the formulas used to produce region rankings.

Fort Hays State is in good shape at this point, sitting at 11-3-3 overall. The FHSU win over Southwestern College is removed from its record for region ranking purposes since results against NAIA or other NCAA level teams are not figured into the formula.

According to the report for the Central Region located at the bottom of the region rankings page on NCAA.com, Fort Hays State has the sixth-best In-Region RPI and seventh-best Division II Performance Indicator value in the Central Region. Washburn owns the highest In-Region RPI and St. Cloud is No. 2 in RPI, which reflects where each sit in the region rankings. Fort Hays State is seeking back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, with previous appearances in 2012, 2016, and 2022.

Eight teams from the Central Region will be selected to compete in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament following the conclusion of conference tournaments. The region consists of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and Great American Conference. Champions from each of the three conference tournaments within the region will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

The MIAA and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) each have five teams listed in the first release. Though the Great American Conference (GAC) does not have a school in the list of 10 right now, one of its members will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of winning their conference tournament. Fort Hays State is 2-3-2 against the teams currently listed among the 10 in the region rankings.

Region rankings released by United Soccer Coaches on a weekly basis up to this point have no bearing on NCAA Region Rankings. The NCAA Region Rankings are the only set of rankings used for national tournament consideration.

⚽ Tiger women sit No. 6 in second edition of NCAA region rankings

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Fort Hays State Men's Basketball team got their 2023-24 season underway on Wednesday night with an exhibition game against the University of Kansas.

The Kansas Jayhawks opened the game with a quick 6-0 run, attacking the paint with Hunter Dickinson. Dickinson recorded nine of Kansas' first 11 points. The Tigers waited just over two minutes for their first bucket coming by way of a Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;layup. Bjarni Jonsson&nbsp;followed moments later with a layup to make the score 6-4, but that's as close as the Tigers would get to the preseason No. 1 overall team in the country.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KU rattled off a 6-0 scoring run heading into the second media timeout of the night, leading the Tigers 19-8 with 11:57 left in the first half. Fort Hays State not only worked to remove the lid off the basket, but also had to fight against foul trouble through the first 20 minutes of play. Fort Hays State shot 8-of-30 from the field and was charged with 13 personal fouls in the first frame. The Tigers caught a burst of life off their lone first half 3-pointer from Traejon Davis, making it a 37-21 game with 2:39 left before the break and forcing KU into a timeout. Lucas Hammake was able to beat his man off the dribble and score a tough runner in traffic to close out the half, trailing 43-23.

The Tigers scored the first four points of the second half but the slight momentum that was built was quickly erased by Kevin McCullar Jr. who had eight points in just 11 minutes in the second half.

The run of the night for the Fort Hays State offense took place late in the second half when the Tigers rattled off 10 unanswered points in a two-minute span, trimming the Kansas lead to 18 points. The scoring spurt included five straight points from Elijah Nnanabu, a made jumper by Shaun Riley, and a Jaheim Holdon&nbsp;three-pointer.

Fort Hays State shot far better in the second half from behind the three-point line at 50 percent, going 6-for-12 from deep. The Tigers had six different players net a three including Nnanabu who knocked down two threes and led FHSU in scoring with 14 points. Traejon Davis&nbsp;added nine points, while Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;finished with eight.

McCullar Jr. led the scoring attack for the Jayhawks with 21 points, drilling four shots from beyond the arc. Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams Jr. also finished in double figures with 14 and 17 points respectively.

The Tigers are set to open regular season play with a pair of neutral site game against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday, Nov. 10 and Arkansas Tech on Saturday, Nov. 11.

🏀 Tigers battle No. 1 Kansas to the end

The Big 12 on Wednesday released four years of&nbsp;<a href="https://big12sports.com/documents/2023/11/1//FB_Matrix_24_27.pdf">football opponents</a>&nbsp;for its newly expanded 16-team conference, including a yearly BYU-Utah game and an emphasis on other in-state rivalries.

The Big 12 adds Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah from the Pac-12 in 2024 while saying goodbye to Oklahoma and Texas. The Sooners and Longhorns are joining the Southeastern Conference.

“As we look towards the future of this Conference, we are thrilled to introduce the first football scheduling matrix for the new-look Big 12," Commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement. "In this model, competitive balance and student-athlete wellness was prioritized. Rivalries will be protected and new matchups will be introduced — the excitement and parity this Conference is known for will continue for years to come.”

Big 12 teams will play nine conference games per season and every member will play at least one home-and-home with the other 15 schools over the next four years. Dates of games will be released later.

The BYU-Utah rivalry is one of the most intense in college football, but the two have not competed in the same conference since they both left the Mountain West in 2011. The Cougars and Utes have played nine times since, though not this season — BYU's first as a member of the Big 12 after being a football independent.

Next year's BYU-Utah game is scheduled to be played in Salt Lake City. The rest of Utah's home schedule includes Arizona, TCU and Iowa State.

The other annual protected rivalries in the Big 12 will be Kansas-Kansas State, Baylor-TCU and Arizona-Arizona State.

Colorado's return to the Big 12 will be marked by home games against Utah, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Cincinnati. The Buffaloes were an original member of the Big 12 but left for the Pac-12 in 2011. CU announced its return to the conference this past summer in a move that helped trigger the demise of the Pac-12.

Arizona's 2024 schedule includes home games against Arizona State, Colorado, Houston, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State had 10 players named to the All-MIAA Women's Soccer Team for 2023 on Wednesday (Nov. 1). The Tigers had one first-team, three second-team, two third-team, and four honorable mention selections. The list of honorees included Emily Hutchings, Reilly Madden, Sullivan Kelly, Allison Worley, Isabel Robben, Ryan McCabe, Hannah Mares, Montserrat Diaz, Kintzli Wagner, and Megan Wiman. The All-MIAA Team is voted on by head coaches of each MIAA school. Coaches cannot vote for their own players.

Earning first-team honors at defender was Emily Hutchings. She is now a three-time All-MIAA selection. Hutchings made the transition to defender this year after already garnering all-conference honors twice as a midfielder. She played all but seven possible minutes in the regular season and notched one assist, helping the Tigers hold opponents to a 0.61 goals against average. She has helped the Tigers to 31 wins over the last three seasons.

Reilly Madden is now a four-time All-MIAA selection, receiving second-team honors this year at defender. She is the most decorated player in program history, now with four All-MIAA honors, an all-region selection, and an All-MIAA Tournament honor. Madden continues to be the anchor of the Tiger defense, which recorded 11 shutouts in the regular season. From her center back position, Madden has now helped the Tigers to 31 shutouts over the last three seasons. She played all but nine minutes of the regular season. Madden also notched four points in the regular season with a game-winning goal and two assists. She has been part of 41 wins for the program since 2019.

Sullivan Kelly picked up her second career All-MIAA selection, honored on the second team at midfielder this season. She tied for the MIAA lead in regular season assists with seven, while also scoring three goals for a total of 13 points. All three of her goals were game-winning goals, helping the Tigers to a 12-win regular season, which is their most wins a regular season since 2016.

Allison Worley joined the party on the second team at forward. The first-year transfer scored seven goals in the regular season, which ranked seventh in the conference. Her 14 points sat 10th in the conference in the regular season. All of her goals were in separate contests and she had two game winners in the regular season.

Isabel Robben is now a two-time All-MIAA selection, earning third-team honors at goalkeeper this year. Robben led the MIAA in regular season shutouts with 11, which also ties the FHSU single-season record for individual shutouts she already shares with Abbie Flax and Kristen Thompson. Robben now has 22 career shutouts, which is a school record as well. She had a 0.61 goals against average in the regular season and made 49 saves. Robben is one of three players nationally to play all 1,620 minutes possible in goal during the regular season, joining Rebecca Partyka of Northeastern State and Bailey Daugherty of Delta State.

Ryan McCabe nabbed her second All-MIAA selection as a midfielder with third-team honors this season. She logged 1,369 minutes during the regular season and recorded one assist. She played at least 70 minutes in all but four matches during the regular season.

Hannah Mares is now a two-time All-MIAA selection, receiving an honorable mention pick this year. Mares led the Tigers in goals (8) and points (16) in the regular season. She ranked sixth in the MIAA in goals scored and points. A highlight of her season was tying the school record for goals in a match with a hat trick against Southwestern College. She netted three goals during the course of MIAA play and both of her game-winning goals were against MIAA opponents. Mares owns the best shot accuracy in NCAA Division II so far this season with a .771 shots on goal percentage (27-of-35).

Montserrat Diaz picked up her first All-MIAA honor with an honorable mention pick at forward. She had a total of 10 points in the regular season with four goals and two assists. She had a pair of game-winning goals in the regular season and two of her goals were against Emporia State, helping the Tigers to a 1-0-1 record against the Hornets to win the tiebreak for the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament.

Kintzli Wagner earned her first All-MIAA nod in her first year with the Tigers after transferring from Northwest Missouri State. She recorded three assists in the regular season, while logging 894 minutes in the midfield. All of her assists came in shutout wins for the Tigers.

Megan Wiman also earned her first All-MIAA selection at defender. She played all but 29 minutes of the regular season, going the distance in all but two matches to help the Tigers to 12 wins and third-place finish in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball will prepare for its upcoming 2023-24 season with an exhibition contest at the University of Kansas on Wednesday. Tipoff at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence is set for 7 p.m.

Fort Hays State is coming off a 21-9 season in 2022-23. The Tigers went 15-7 in MIAA to tie for third in the conference standings. They have finished third in the conference each of the last two seasons. The Tigers enter their 23rd&nbsp;season under head coach Mark Johnson, who owns a 428-212 record at FHSU. The Tigers have 11 seasons of 20 or more wins under Johnson's guidance.

Kansas has been tabbed as the No. 1 ranked team in the AP Preseason Top 25 Poll for NCAA Division I. The Jayhawks are coming off a 28-8 season in 2022-23 and a Big 12 regular season title. It was their 21st&nbsp;Big 12 regular season title and NCAA-leading 64th&nbsp;regular season conference title all-time. Kansas advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the West Region before getting knocked out by No. 8 seed Arkansas by a score of 72-71. KU returns three of its regular starters from last year in Dajuan Harris, Kevin McCullar, and KJ Adams.

This will be the 10th&nbsp;exhibition meeting between the schools and 13th&nbsp;overall. Kansas is 9-0 against FHSU in exhibition play and 3-0 in regular season play. The last exhibition meeting between the teams occurred on October 24, 2019 with the Jayhawks winning by a score of 86-56. Down 11 at the break, FHSU closed back within two points of KU with a 9-0 run out of halftime, but KU eventually pulled away for the win. The closest exhibition game between the teams occurred back in 2013 when KU won by 17, 92-75. The 75 points were also most scored by FHSU in an exhibition or regular season contest against KU.

Fort Hays State returns three All-MIAA selections from a year ago in Kaleb Hammeke, Elijah Nnanabu and Bjarni Jonsson. Hammeke is now a three-time All-MIAA selection after earning first-team honors last year, along with a selection to the NABC All-District Second Team for the Central Region. He was a second-team selection in 2021-22 and was honorable mention along with Freshman of the Year honors in 2020-21. Nnanabu and Jonsson were each honorable mention selections last year, while Jonsson was named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team for a second-straight year.

🏀🎙️ LISTEN - Tiger men open season with exhibition at No. 1 Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Soccer is among the receiving votes section of the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. It is the second time the Tigers have received votes in the poll this year after being among the list in the first regular season poll back on September 5.

Fort Hays State is now 7-6-2 overall, coming off a 2-0 win over then No. 24 ranked Northeastern State last Thursday in Hays. The result knocked Northeastern State completely from the poll this week. Rogers State joins FHSU among the receiving votes section this week and GAC/MIAA frontrunner Southern Nazarene checks in at No. 17 this week.

Fort Hays State takes on both Southern Nazarene and Rogers State this week. FHSU hosts SNU on Thursday night at 6 p.m. before heading on the road to face Rogers State on Saturday (Nov. 3) at 1 p.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll for the third straight week on Tuesday . The Tigers are one of 11 teams listed in the receiving votes section. The Tigers finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-3-3, producing their most wins in a regular season since 2016.

The Tigers prepare for MIAA Tournament play this week, hosting Northeastern State in the opening round on Friday night (Nov. 3) at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The advancing team moves on to the semifinals at Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita, Kansas the following Thursday (Nov. 9).The MIAA has two teams among the Top 25 of the poll. Washburn enters this week at No. 8, while Central Missouri occupies the No. 17 spot.

The Patriots have the history. The Chiefs have the juice.

New England is bringing its six Super Bowl trophies. How about a yacht? Kansas City has that, not to mention&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/top-quarterbacks-mahomes-tagovailoa-allen-jackson-hurts-0f9f5979e44d86ec227484827fdb22f0">the star quarterback</a>&nbsp;and tight end.

They’re all headed to Frankfurt to take part in two weeks of American football because beyond the games, there are German fans to win over. A lot of them.

“Most Germans don’t have a team yet,” said Alexander Steinforth, the NFL’s general manager for Germany.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/carolina-panthers-seattle-seahawks-tampa-bay-buccaneers-kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-0bea6a57c5a927f0cf57d1d4cc6b1be1">fandom is in the millions</a>&nbsp;— a barely tapped gold mine for teams and a league which have mostly maxed out domestically. The league says it has 18 million casual fans — that would be roughly one in five residents of Germany — and 3.6 million “avid” ones.

“We are reaching that state of maturity where you see fans are actively seeking out teams and are looking for teams that they can follow," Steinforth said. "That’s why the market is so exciting for franchises to be active in because right now they have a massive opportunity to pick up fans.”

The Chiefs go first — they’ll play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. A week later, the Patriots face the Indianapolis Colts. Both games are at Deutsche Bank Park.

The Chiefs and Patriots both have commercial rights in Germany under the league’s&nbsp;<a href="https://operations.nfl.com/updates/the-game/nfl-announces-growth-of-global-markets-program-with-the-addition-of-two-new-clubs-and-four-new-markets/">global markets program</a>, as do the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons. It means they can sign corporate sponsorship deals, hold events to attract fans and sell merchandise like they do in their home markets.

For Kansas City, life is good. They’re the defending Super Bowl champion. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the reigning MVP. Travis Kelce is having another big season. Oh yeah, the tight end also appears to be in a relationship with global megastar Taylor Swift, which only&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-nfl-gen-z-be42bde423a35c8f4c34bd9a18327b07">adds to the buzz</a>.

“It’s perfect timing for us as a franchise and we’re going to be very aggressive in taking full advantage of that,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said of the team’s overall momentum.

The Chiefs have spent $1 million in preparation and fan events for Frankfurt, Donovan said.

The team is docking a Chiefs-themed yacht in the Main River for fans to board and get a selfie with the Lombardi trophy from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2023-kansas-city-chiefs-philadelphia-eagles-43a1fb387f63438c1eea23b6a4244d95">their 38-35 win</a>&nbsp;over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Both the Chiefs and Patriots wanted last year’s first-ever regular-season game in Munich, but that went to the Bucs and Tom Brady, in part because NFC teams had the extra home game.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-tom-brady-tampa-bay-buccaneers-new-england-patriots-nfl-d3624bfc6649100cbd7a090c1bdcc942">Bucs beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16</a>&nbsp;at Allianz Arena in what Steinforth said was the NFL's “most-successful international game” in terms of viewership and merchandise sales. He added that German viewership this season on free-to-air broadcaster RTL is up “9 to 10%" from a year ago.

Though five teams are in the market, the Chiefs and Patriots “have been the most aggressive and probably have the most foothold,” Donovan said. New England has some advantages, he added, ”because they’ve been there longer and they have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-soccer-sports-germany-europe-098f5fcf8d1bdf1646f776c1e4f3089d">some German players</a>&nbsp;and German radio and things like that.

“We definitely want to be No. 1 in Germany” and elsewhere, he said.

New England saw a surge of interest after selecting German offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer in 2009. They began pushing&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/patsdeutsch/status/1712113439383101596">German content</a>&nbsp;into the country. The Super Bowl titles kept coming, all coinciding with NFL games airing weekly on free TV network ProSieben. The league switched to the bigger RTL starting this season.

“I would say we are the No. 1 (team) or we have been for many, many years, but obviously we’re running up against the Kansas City Chiefs, who are doing really well right now and their popularity is soaring,” said Joe Dorant, the team’s senior director of business development for the region.

All six of New England’s Lombardi trophies will be on display for fans and photos at “Patriots Haus” downtown, and alumni will be greeting the locals.

“I don’t think we can,” Dorant said. “The only thing we can do is show the German people what the Patriot way is. We’ve been successful for many, many years — for a 20-year span. No other team can say that.”

Kansas City already had the fastest-growing Instagram and TikTok engagement in Germany among NFL teams and that was “pre-Taylor,” Donovan said. Among the five teams in the market, the Chiefs have the most Instagram followers on their German account, but the Panthers have the edge on TikTok.

“I don't know at this point if she’s going to Germany or not,” Donovan said.

Kelce is sure to face questions about Swift from the locals. Brady was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-tampa-bay-buccaneers-tom-brady-nfl-sports-0e7614a0cd2597e3949b4eb7d2796c82">grilled about his personal life</a>&nbsp;following his divorce from Gisele Bündchen. A TV producer also&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/AP_NFL/status/1591148718757384193">presented Brady with Bavarian lederhosen</a>.

Teams have hired German agencies and advisers to facilitate deals — the Chiefs' sponsorship agreements include fast food and pet food — but they didn't need help figuring out they can gain visibility through Germany's top sport: soccer.

Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich has more than 40 million Instagram followers. The Patriots are tops in the NFL with 5 million. The Chiefs' German account is just under 46,000.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.panthers.com/news/panthers-bundesliga-eintracht-frankfurt-to-promote-nfl-football-in-germany">Panthers partnered with Eintracht Frankfurt</a>, the Bundesliga club that plays in Deutsche Bank Park.

New England&nbsp;<a href="https://www.patriots.com/news/patriots-host-german-men-s-national-soccer-team-at-gillette-stadium-ahead-of-int">hosted the German national soccer team</a>&nbsp;in Foxborough. The Chiefs have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=KLRN5dXi62o">linked up with Bayern</a>&nbsp;through the Hunt family-owned FC Dallas.

The Panthers and Falcons would figure to be next in line. Germany is slated to host one game next year — the NFL confirmed on Monday it will be in Munich — and one in 2025.

The Patriots hope to play in Germany as often as possible.

“We would have no issue with playing a game next year and the year after — however many games that they ask us to play,” Dorant said.

The Chiefs and Patriots are the designated “home” teams in Frankfurt. The Chiefs are such a big draw that other teams don't want to give up a visit from them.

“We’d like to be more aggressive in being in the international markets more often,” Donovan said. “Right now, we’d only do it as an away team ideally, or during those years when we have the extra home game.”

It’s widely expected the NFL will extend its deal in Germany. The league opened an office in Dusseldorf with a capacity for 25 employees.

“That’s the idea, to grow into it,” Steinforth said.

The 7-2 (6-2 MIAA) Tigers head to Warrensburg, Missouri this week to face No. 11 ranked Central Missouri, which enters this week at both 8-1 (8-1 MIAA).Fort Hays State was the second team listed among the receiving votes section with 30 votes, only behind West Florida with 33. The Tigers were 13 votes shy of the Top 25 as No. 25 ranked Mars Hill has 43 votes this week.

The MIAA has three schools in the Top 25 this week with Missouri Western (7-2, 6-2 MIAA) moving into the Top 25. The Griffons are ranked No. 23 this week. Pittsburg State (9-0, 8-0 MIAA) remains No. 2 in the Top 25, while Central Missouri moved up four spots this week to from No. 15 to No. 11. Two matchups in the MIAA this week feature all four of its teams referenced in the poll with Pittsburg State playing at Missouri Western and Fort Hays State playing at Central Missouri.
