BALTIMORE (AP) — Austin Hays homered on the first pitch thrown by Kansas City starter Daniel Lynch, Tyler Wells took a three-hitter into the seventh inning and the Baltimore Orioles beat the struggling Royals 3-2 on Friday night.

Gunnar Henderson had three hits, stole two bases and scored a run for the Orioles, who have won two straight for the first time since May 24-25. Coming off a victory at Milwaukee, Baltimore never relinquished the lead after Hays' leadoff&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Orioles/status/1667309759295545344">shot inside the left-field foul pole</a>.

“I've been in that situation before when you give up a first-pitch homer,” Wells said. “It's kind of one of those things where it's like, ‘I feel for ya,’ but I'm happy it's on my side.”

Hays also doubled and scored in the fifth.

“Austin Hays had a real nice night,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “He got us on the board early. That was great to see. He really sparked us tonight at the top of the order.”

Wells (5-2) allowed two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking one. The 6-foot-8 righty was lifted with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh with the score 3-1.

“He had a little trouble getting thought that seventh, unfortunately, but I thought he was absolutely excellent tonight,” Hyde said.

Mike Baumann threw a wild pitch to let in a run before striking out Nicky Lopez.

Baltimore then turned to its potent 1-2 punch out of the bullpen to seal the victory. Yennier Cano worked a scoreless eighth to lower his ERA to 1.06 and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Orioles/status/1667349660393160706">Félix Bautista</a>&nbsp;got three straight outs in the ninth for his 17th save.

It was the seventh loss in eight games for the Royals, whose 18-45 record is second-worst in the majors next to Oakland.

Seeking his first win in 14 starts since last Aug. 1, Lynch (0-2) gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings. It was his third start of 2023 following a lengthy stay on the injured list with a rotator cuff strain.

“I thought it was positive,” manager Matt Quatraro said of the outing. “His breaking ball had some good shape to it, he threw some good changeups, his fastball had some life.”

Play was stopped for several minutes while umpires went to the replay to determine if the count to Hays was 3-0 or a four-pitch walk, as indicated by the scoreboard. The ruling was that Hays had only seen three pitches, and he ended up popping out.

Royals: Placed OF Edward Olivares on the restricted list and recalled INF/OF Nate Eaton from Triple-A Omaha. Regarding Olivares, Quatraro said, “He has a personal thing to take care of today. Expecting him back (Saturday).”

Orioles: Recalled LHP Nick Vespi from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned LHP Bruce Zimmermann to Norfolk.

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino left the game with a shoulder soreness. “We're going to have to see how he bounces back after some treatment,” Quatraro said. “He's just a little tender.”

Orioles: 1B Ryan Mountcastle missed a second straight game with an illness. “He's just not feeling real good,” Hyde said.

Royals: RH Brady Singer (4-4, 6.45 ERA) starts Saturday in the second game of the series. In his only previous appearance against Baltimore, he allowed seven runs in two innings on July 17, 2021.

Orioles: LH Cole Irvin (0-2, 10.38) will be recalled from Norfolk on Saturday to make his first start in the majors since April 13.

The Kansas Softball Coaches have released their 2023 All-State teams and several area players are listed in Class 2-1A.

The Ellis Railroaders had three players named to the team. Junior infielder Kaydawn Haag was named first team. Senior Myah McCoy was named second team infielder and senior Hannah Schiel was named second team catcher.

TMP-Marian sophomore Brooke Koeningsman was named first team infielder and senior Jaci VonLintel was named to the second team.

Haag led the Railers with a .556 batting average in 22 games with a team-best eight home runs. Haag tied for second on the squad with McCoy wtih 35 hits. The two also tied for second with 28 RBIs. Haag led Ellis with 54 runs scored and stole 26 bases.

Schiel was second on the Railers team with a .578 batting average. She led the team with 39 hits and was second with 12 doubles and seven home runs.

McCoy was third on the team with a .449 average. She tied for second with 35 hits and lead the Railers with 16 doubles.

Koeningsman led the Monarchs with a .532 average. She had a team-high 41 hits in 23 games and tied for the team lead with 11 doubles. She also hit a team-best six home runs and led the squad with 42 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

VonLintel hit .438 in 23 games for the Monarchs this spring. She was second on the team with 35 hits and tied for the team lead with 11 doubles and had a team-best four triples and led the team with 15 stolen bases.

Hays High junior Aubree Thomas has been named to the Class 5A All-State softball team as an outfielder by the Kansas high school softball coaches.

Thomas had 35 hits and with a .486 batting average. She was also stellar in the circle this spring. Thomas compiled an 11-3 won-loss record while pitching 93.1 innings. She struck out 111 and walked just 24 batters. Her earned-run-average was a solid 2.25.&nbsp;

🥎 Hays High's Thomas named to 5A all-state team

The Hays Larks are inviting everyone to the 14th annual Military Appreciation Night in conjunction with their game against the Denver Cougars on Saturday, June 10 at Larks Park at 7 p.m. 

 All active, reserve, and retired military personnel are specially invited to attend and will be honored on the field during pregame ceremonies. Military personnel will also be recognized after the 6th inning prior to the singing of “God Bless America."

Military personnel in attendance should check in at the east side of the grandstand by 6:45 p.m. Saturday evening.

Fans are encouraged to be in the park by 6:50 pm to show their appreciation and support for all military personnel during pregame ceremonies. 

Those ceremonies will feature recognition of all military personnel in attendance, a Color Guard, and the National Anthem sung live by Uncalled-4. 

Those in attendance will also enjoy patriotic music and a red, white, and blue-decorated park throughout the evening.

Hays Larks' Military Appreciation Night set for June 10

DODGE CITY – The Dodge
City A’s scored a run in the seventh and another in the eighth as they rallied for a 3-2 win over the Hays Larks in a non-league game Thursday night at Cavalier Field.

The game was tied 1-1
through six innings. The Larks (4-2) took a brief lead in the top of the seventh
when Damian Ruiz scored on a safety squeeze. Dodge City (2-3) tied it back up
in the bottom of the inning when they scored on a two-out error on a ground ball
to second base. The A’s took the lead for good on a Dawson Stutz one-out
single.

The Larks struck first
in the fourth inning on a Garrett Gruell triple which scored Will Pendergrass.
The A’s tied the game an inning later on a Cooper Schneider double.

Jose Velazquez (0-1) took
the loss in relief allowing the run in the eighth.

Starting pitcher Caden Hare allowed one earned run on six hits over 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Carson Jacobs allowed one earned run on one hit over 2 2/3 innings of relief with four strikeouts and two walks.

Four Dodge City pitchers combined to hold the Larks to four hits.

Trent Baker stayed hot
with two more hits. The Larks leadoff hitter out of Houston Christian has
eight hits in the last three games.

Mountain Baseball League play Friday with the first of a three-game series with
the Denver Cougars. Saturday night is Military Appreciation Night. All active,

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have agreed to a one-year deal with former Kansas City Chiefs edge rusher Frank Clark following third-year pro Baron Browning's knee operation, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

Browning underwent a procedure in recent weeks to repair a torn meniscus, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't publicly addressed the outside linebacker's health status and won't discuss Clark's contract until he signs. Browning is expected to be back for training camp next month.

Clark, who turns 30 next week, was cut recently by the Chiefs in a cost-saving move. He's a ninth-year pro who had five sacks for the Super Bowl champs last year. He spent his first four seasons in Seattle, collecting 35 sacks and 72 quarterback hits.

His best season came in 2018 when he set career highs with 13 sacks and two dozen QB hits, but all three of his Pro Bowl berths came with the Chiefs between 2019 and 2021.

Clark is expected to step in opposite starter Randy Gregory, at least until Browning returns. Both Browning and Gregory have a long history of injuries that have sidelined them.

Gregory was limited to three starts and two sacks last year, his first in Denver, and Browning collected five sacks in eight starts.

Clark has never played in fewer than 14 games in his eight-year NFL career. But he was suspended for two games last season for violating the league's personal conduct policy. The suspension stemmed from his no-contest plea to two counts of misdemeanor possession of an assault weapon in separate incidents in 2021.

🏈 Broncos agree to 1-year deal with Frank Clark after Baron Browning knee surgery

IRVING, Texas&nbsp;– Today, the Big 12 Conference announced the launch of Big 12 Mexico, the Conference’s first international extension that will see Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball, women’s soccer and baseball games held in Mexico with the Kansas Jayhawks being at the forefront of the innovative initiative.

Big 12 Mexico’s first contest will be a men’s and women’s basketball matchup between Kansas and Houston, held in Mexico City at Arena CDMX in 2024. Following the launch of Big 12 basketball in Mexico, Big 12 women’s soccer and baseball will participate in exhibitions against clubs from the region.

Additionally, the Big 12 will explore establishing a football bowl game in Monterrey, starting in 2026. This would be the first bowl game ever held in Mexico.

“Mexico is a natural extension to the Big 12 footprint, and I’m thrilled to introduce Big 12 Mexico as the Conference’s first-ever international presence,” said&nbsp;Commissioner Brett Yormark.&nbsp;“Through Big 12 Mexico, our student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete in an international setting, and our Conference will have the chance to showcase our brand across Mexico.”

Kansas Men’s and Women’s Basketball will travel to Mexico City in December of 2024 to participate in their respective matchups against Houston.

Additionally, the Big 12 will look to secure for the first time Spanish radio broadcasts for Big 12 Football and Basketball Championships in 2023-24 and beyond, and will implement a robust Mexico digital strategy.

The Big 12 Conference will team up with Mexico City-based live entertainment agency Zignia as a co-promotional partner. Zignia will support with marketing and sales of Big 12 Mexico events, as well as provide the Conference with their depth of resources. 🏈 Area players in Saturday's Kansas 8-Man All-Star Game

HAYS - The Hays Larks had a successful home debut Wednesday night in front of a packed crowd. The Larks score five runs in the second inning&nbsp; and cruised to an 11-4 win over the Dodge City A’s in a non-league game at Larks Park.

The Larks have won three-straight and improved to 3-1 on the season. Dodge City lost their second straight and drops to 1-3.

The A’s scored runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead but Baylor's Will Pendergrass tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run in his first at-bat of the summer. Houston Christian's&nbsp;Trent Baker later followed with an RBI single which scored Bryson Evans to give the Larks the lead for good. The leadoff hitter finished with three of the Larks nine hits including a double and drove in two runs. 

Garrett Greull and Will Pendergrass also drove in a pair of runs. 

Second-year Lark Kam Walton (1-0) was one of four pitchers on the night and was awarded the win. The redshirt-freshman from the University of New Mexico allowed one earned run on four hits over four innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Luuk ter Beek and Dayne Pengelly followed with three combined hitless innings. Pengelly, a sophomore out of Pima (Ariz.) CC, struck out five over two innings. 

Oklahoma junior Jett Lodes pitched the final two innings. He gave up a two-run homer but struck out the side in the eight then struck out the side in the ninth.

Leadoff hitter Trent Baker, a freshman from Houston Christian, had three hits vs. Dodge City Wednesday. It was his second straight 3-hit game. He now has three multi-hit games this season and has hit safely in all five games.

The Larks four pitchers combined to strike out 19 Dodge City batters while walking only three. It's the most strikeouts for the Larks in recent history. The previous high had been 18 strikeouts vs. the Fort Collins (Colo.) Foxes on July 11, 2021.

The Larks travel to Dodge City Thursday for another non-league game. They return home Friday to host the Denver Cougars in their Rocky Mountain Baseball League opener.

⚾ Larks cruise past A's in home opener

MIAMI (AP) — Luis Arraez singled twice and raised his major league-leading average to .403 as the Miami Marlins beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 on Wednesday night.

Jesús Sánchez homered, singled twice and had four RBI for the Marlins, who won their sixth straight. The consecutive three-game series sweeps over the Royals and Oakland A’s are the first by the Marlins at home since winning six straight against Washington and Houston in 2008.

“We’re very confident and happy right now,” Sánchez said. “At the end of the day, the most important thing is to win the game. The positive vibe and adrenaline are there.”

Kansas City was swept in a series for the sixth time this year, dropping to 18-44 after its sixth loss in seven games, The Royals haven’t swept a single series.

Marlins starter Edward Cabrera’s one-run outing ended after throwing his warm-up pitches to begin the sixth. Manager Skip Schumaker and a Marlins trainer approached the mound and spoke with the right-hander, who was then removed because of a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand.

Cabrera (5-4) gave up two hits, walked two, struck out four and hit a batter.

“I started feeling it in the third inning but we were winning and I couldn’t let the team down,” Cabrera said. “I kept fighting and throwing as many innings as I could.”

Jordan Lyles remained winless and lost his 10th decision. He allowed five runs, six hits, walked one and struck out two in seven-plus innings.

“He’s had several starts like that this year where he’s gone real deep in the games,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “And that’s something he’s always done. He’s durable and bounces back well.”

Left-handers Steven Okert, Tanner Scott, Andrew Nardi and A.J. Puk relieved Cabrera and threw an inning each to complete the three-hitter.

Sánchez’s three-run shot in the third erased a 1-0 deficit. Sánchez hit a change-up from Lyles over the wall in center for his sixth homer and second straight game.

“I wasn’t trying to hit a home run, just making a good swing,” Sánchez said.

Miami padded its lead in the eighth on Bryan De La Cruz’s two-run double and Sánchez’s RBI single.

The Royals struck first on Nick Pratto’s RBI single in the third inning.

Marlins centerfield Garrett Hampson tracked down Bobby Witt Jr.’s drive, jumped and caught it above the wall in the fourth.

“It was high enough where I could get to the wall,” Hampson said. “Just trying to get back and find the wall, kind of get a general idea where the wall is and go make the play.”

The Royals placed RHP Josh Staumont (neck strain) on the 15-day injured list and recalled LHP Austin Cox from Triple-A Omaha.

Hays High had two players named to the Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association 5A All-State team.

Senior midfielder Katie Dinkel was named to the second team and junior forward Arely Maldonado was an honorable mention selection.

Both were named first team All-Western Athletic Conference last month.

Maldonado tied for the team lead with 20 goals and tallied 45 points. Dinkel was second on the team with 10 assists.

Hays High finished the season 13-5 overall, losing to Andover Central in the regional finals.

⚽ Hays High gets two on 5A All-State team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State pole vaulter Ryan Stanley&nbsp;was the male recipient of the 2022-23 Ken B. Jones Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group, announced Tuesday (June 6) at the 2023 MIAA Awards Celebration presented by Husch Blackwell. The Ken B. Jones Award recognizes the Association's top female and male student-athletes from the academic year. Stanley previously won the 2021 MIAA Spring Male Student-Athlete of the Year award, making him the third male student-athlete to win multiple top conference honors since the award was established in 1993-94. A two-time national champion, Stanley lifted a pair of All-American trophies this season, placing fifth outdoors and seventh indoors. He finished his career with eight All-American honors after qualifying for eight national meets. He was the outdoor MIAA pole vault champion this season and also earned All-MIAA honors indoors with a third-place finish, giving the Bennington, Kan. native five career All-MIAA medals and two conference titles. He holds the school record in the pole vault both indoors (17-9.25, 5.42m) and outdoors (17-7, 5.36m) and was a seven-time All-Region selection. Stanley graduated summa cum laude with his bachelor's degree as a double major in Management (Human Resources) and Spanish for Specific Purposes with a GPA of 3.95 in the fall of 2022. He recently completed an MBA with an emphasis in Human Resource Management with a GPA of 3.63 in the spring of 2023. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-America first team selection in 2021 and is a two-time CoSIDA/College Sports Communicators Academic All-District pick. He has earned four USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards, three MIAA Academic Excellence Awards, five MIAA Scholar-Athlete Awards, nine MIAA Academic Honor Roll spots and three D2ADA Academic Achievement Awards. Off the pole vault runway and outside of the classroom, Stanley has engaged in numerous philanthropic and civic activities during his five years in Hays. He served as the FHSU student body president in 2022-23 after spending last year as vice president and has also been a VIP Ambassador with the Office of the President for three consecutive years. He's helped with SGA's Big Event three years in a row by serving at Bethesda Place and has also traveled to Topeka to advocate for higher education three times at Higher Education Day. Stanley has been a guest speaker at the Hays Middle School Leadership Conference and volunteered at Youth Night at the Track. He packed boxes for Operation Christmas Child with Christian Challenge and participated in Kare Packs packing with the Society for Human Resource Management. He frequently drives international classmates with limited means of transportation to run errands. Stanley is the first male FHSU student-athlete to win the Ken B. Jones Award, joining Kate Lehman (2014-15) as the lone individuals from Fort Hays State to win the MIAA's top honor. Stanley and Whitney Randall (2020-21 winter) both won season-specific MIAA Student-Athlete of the Year awards in 2020-21 when the award was divided into seasons due to the lack of athletic competition in the fall that year. FHSU women's golfer Morgan Brasser was a finalist for the award on the women's side, making Fort Hays State one of two institutions in the conference with finalists for both awards. Brasser was the MIAA Women's Golfer of the Year and a unanimous first team All-MIAA selection after setting the program record with a stroke average of 75.8. She won three tournaments this year and was a WGCA All-Region selection after qualifying for her third-consecutive NCAA DII Central Regional. The Andale, Kan. native carries a GPA of 3.91 as an HHP major&nbsp;emphasizing in Sport &amp; Exercise Therapy and has served on the FHSU&nbsp;Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years in addition to volunteering at the FHSU Campus Catholic Center and with youth golf clinics. A 15-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors - including a representative from each member institution - select the finalists. He holds the school record in the pole vault both indoors (17-9.25, 5.42m) and outdoors (17-7, 5.36m) and was a seven-time All-Region selection. Stanley graduated summa cum laude with his bachelor's degree as a double major in Management (Human Resources) and Spanish for Specific Purposes with a GPA of 3.95 in the fall of 2022. He recently completed an MBA with an emphasis in Human Resource Management with a GPA of 3.63 in the spring of 2023. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-America first team selection in 2021 and is a two-time CoSIDA/College Sports Communicators Academic All-District pick. He has earned four USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards, three MIAA Academic Excellence Awards, five MIAA Scholar-Athlete Awards, nine MIAA Academic Honor Roll spots and three D2ADA Academic Achievement Awards. Off the pole vault runway and outside of the classroom, Stanley has engaged in numerous philanthropic and civic activities during his five years in Hays. He served as the FHSU student body president in 2022-23 after spending last year as vice president and has also been a VIP Ambassador with the Office of the President for three consecutive years. He's helped with SGA's Big Event three years in a row by serving at Bethesda Place and has also traveled to Topeka to advocate for higher education three times at Higher Education Day. Stanley has been a guest speaker at the Hays Middle School Leadership Conference and volunteered at Youth Night at the Track. He packed boxes for Operation Christmas Child with Christian Challenge and participated in Kare Packs packing with the Society for Human Resource Management. He frequently drives international classmates with limited means of transportation to run errands. Stanley is the first male FHSU student-athlete to win the Ken B. Jones Award, joining Kate Lehman (2014-15) as the lone individuals from Fort Hays State to win the MIAA's top honor. Stanley and Whitney Randall (2020-21 winter) both won season-specific MIAA Student-Athlete of the Year awards in 2020-21 when the award was divided into seasons due to the lack of athletic competition in the fall that year. FHSU women's golfer Morgan Brasser was a finalist for the award on the women's side, making Fort Hays State one of two institutions in the conference with finalists for both awards. Brasser was the MIAA Women's Golfer of the Year and a unanimous first team All-MIAA selection after setting the program record with a stroke average of 75.8. She won three tournaments this year and was a WGCA All-Region selection after qualifying for her third-consecutive NCAA DII Central Regional. The Andale, Kan. native carries a GPA of 3.91 as an HHP major&nbsp;emphasizing in Sport &amp; Exercise Therapy and has served on the FHSU&nbsp;Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years in addition to volunteering at the FHSU Campus Catholic Center and with youth golf clinics. A 15-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors - including a representative from each member institution - select the finalists. FHSU's Stanley wins MIAA Ken B. Jones Award

MIAMI (AP) — Luis Arraez had two hits to raise his major league-leading batting average to .401 and help the Miami Marlins beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 on Tuesday night.

Second in the NL East, the Marlins have won five straight to improve to 34-28 — the first time they’ve been six games over .500 since August 2016.

After Arraez flew out to left in his first two at-bats, he hit consecutive singles to finish 2 for 4 with an RBI. Jesús Sánchez homered and Bryan De La Cruz drove in three runs.

“It is an honor when I see that number on the scoreboard but as I’ve said before it is not impossible,” Arraez said in Spanish. “Things are going well for me and we are also winning, which is what is most important.”

Marlins starter Jesús Luzardo threw seven innings of one-run ball. Luzardo (5-4) scattered two hits and struck out eight, matching his longest outing of the season. Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing followed Luzardo, each throwing an inning to complete the five-hitter.

“Today was a step in the right direction for something me and (catcher) Nick (Fortes) have been working on, which is just mixing it up with everything I’ve got,” Luzardo said. “Hopefully, we keep doing that and taking steps forward.”

Luzardo was pulled after 86 pitches and a perfected seventh.

“We have an idea of the amount of innings Jesús has thrown in his career,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “He’s going to be on pace for a career high and we want to monitor it, throwing the extra inning when it’s needed. We felt we had really good matchups at the end with the bullpen to give guys an inning.”

Miami broke open a scoreless game with a five-run fifth against Zack Greinke (1-6).

The former Cy Young Award winner kept Miami hitless until Sánchez’s leadoff blast. Sánchez drove the first pitch breaking ball from Greinke over the wall in left for his fifth homer.

“All of his pitches move,” Sánchez said about facing Greinke. “Although he doesn’t have the stuff, I always look for the fastball. He threw me the curveball and I adjusted because I have the ability to hit the curveball, too.”

Arraez’s one-out single with the bases loaded made it 2-0 and ended Greinke’s outing. Reliever Jackson Kowar retired Jorge Soler on a pop out to second before De La Cruz cleared the bases with a double to right.

The 39-year-old Greinke gave up five runs, four hits and struck out three. He was unbeaten in seven career decisions against Miami.

“Really, he didn’t throw the ball any differently that inning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Maybe one of those pitches may have been left over the middle of the plate. They got a little more aggressive that inning and put a couple of good swings on it.”

Nick Pratto doubled off Luzardo in the seventh, advanced on a ground out and raced home after a wild pitch for Kansas City’s run.

The Marlins are 12-2 against the American League this season. They began the season with a major league-worst 103-148 record in interleague play.

The Marlins activated LHP A.J. Puk from the injured list and optioned RHP George Soriano to Triple-A Jacksonville.

⚾ Marlins five-run fifth sinks Royals

MIAMI (AP) — Luis Arraez had three hits to raise his major league-leading batting average to .399, and the Miami Marlins beat the Kansas City Royals 9-6 on Monday night.

Arraez drove in two runs for the Marlins, who erased an early four-run deficit and won their fourth straight game. Bryan De La Cruz hit his eighth homer, while Jon Berti, Nick Fortes and Joey Wendle had two hits apiece.

After going hitless in four at-bats Friday against Oakland, Arraez is 10 for 13 over the last three games.

“It’s huge,” he said of his current average. “I have worked hard for this. But this is just starting. I am not complacent. I want to accomplish more.”

No big league player has batted .400 for a season since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941.

Braxton Garrett (2-2) overcame a difficult start and completed five innings of four-run ball. The left-hander gave up six hits and struck out six.

Arraez’s RBI single capped a four-run fourth and put Miami ahead 6-4. Berti hit a two-run triple and Jonathan Davis followed with an RBI double as the Marlins got five consecutive hits against reliever Mike Mayers with two outs.

Miami increased its lead to 9-4 on De La Cruz’s two-run drive against Josh Staumont in the sixth.

“Our offense always feels like they’re in the game,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “When you’re getting length out of the lineup from top to bottom, you feel really good about every single inning, whether it starts with Arraez at the top or whoever the six- or seven-hole hitter is at the bottom.”

The Royals narrowed the gap to 9-6 on Drew Waters’ run-scoring single off Steven Okert in the ninth. Dylan Floro relieved Okert with one out and retired Bobby Witt Jr. on a double-play grounder for his seventh save.

Carlos Hernández opened for the Royals and retired six straight. Mayers (1-1) took over in the third and allowed Davis’ RBI grounder and Arraez’s run-scoring double.

“The first couple of innings didn’t go too well for us,” Berti said. “To be able to string some things together was just big.”

Mayers, who pitched six scoreless innings of relief and carried a combined perfect game into the seventh against St. Louis in his previous appearance May 29, gave up seven runs and nine hits over three innings.

“I thought I made some quality pitches there early,” Mayers said. “They put the barrel to the ball and had a good approach against me.”

Kansas City struck quickly on MJ Melendez’s RBI single and Salvador Pérez’s run-scoring single in the first.

Nick Pratto’s solo shot and Melendez’s second run-scoring single in the third made it 4-0.

The start time of the series finale Wednesday night has been moved up 30 minutes to 6:10 p.m. With the Miami Heat playing their first home game of the NBA Finals against the Denver Nuggets later that night, Marlins management sought to reduce the window of both events coinciding.

The Royals renewed their annual “Fathers Trip” during series stops in Miami and Baltimore. Fathers, fathers-in-law, and brothers of current Royals players and staff travel with the group. They stay in the team hotel and have the option of riding on chartered buses. The trip became a Royals tradition until it was interrupted in 2020 because of the pandemic.

“It’s eye-opening to me. I’ve never been part of something like this,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “I think it’s really cool. To share that with them is really special.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said the Kansas City Chiefs are "building a dynasty” as he hosted the team at the White House Monday to mark their Super Bowl victory in February.

Speaking on the South Lawn, Biden praised the team for playing with “the real joy of the game and love for each other and the great city you represent.” He also praised the team for their charitable work off the field, saying, “as these guys know about football, they know about life and how to use their platform to make a difference. ”

Biden joked that first lady Jill Biden, a “rabid” Philadelphia fan, is still not over the dramatic end to the game, which included a controversial holding penalty against the Eagles that set the Chiefs up for their game-winning field goal. The president added, “I have to be careful what I say today,” even thoughhis wife was out of the country.

Biden led the crowd in a moment of silence to mark the death Sunday of Norma Hunt, wife of the late team founder Lamar Hunt, saying he was sending “our condolences to the entire Hunt family.”

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the game's most valuable player, and tight end Travis Kelce presented Biden with a personalized Kansas City Chiefs jersey before posing for a team photo with the president.

Before the ceremony, the team was given a tour of the White House.
