The Fort Hays State baseball team wraps up a seven-game homestand this weekend (April 5-7) when the Tigers host Northwest Missouri State for a three-game MIAA series. The weekend slate begins Friday at 5 p.m. with Pack the Park/Curt Pfannenstiel Day at Larks Park. The series continues with a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday before wrapping up with a noon matinee on Sunday.

The annual Pack the Park/Curt Pfannenstiel Day will feature discounted concessions all evening, including burgers and brats for $2.50, hot dogs for $2 and drinks for $2. Admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for kids and will be cash only.

The Tigers enter the weekend 20-14 overall and 8-12 in MIAA play, while the Bearcats are 15-19 this season and 7-13 in league contests.

Fort Hays State matched last year's win total with its victory over Missouri Western last Saturday, giving the Tigers 20 wins in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2012-13.With four conference series yet to play, the Tigers currently sit in a tie for seventh in the league standings with Northeastern State, one game behind Rogers State in sixth. FHSU is one game up on the Bearcats, who are tied for ninth alongside Missouri Western.

Both the Tigers and Bearcats are coming off series victories, with FHSU taking two-of-three against Missouri Western last weekend and Northwest Missouri State winning two out of three against No. 8-ranked Missouri Southern last weekend.

Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;leads the team with 11 home runs with Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;close behind with 10, making the Tigers one of three schools in the MIAA to have multiple players with 10 or more home runs this season. Herrmann also paces the Tigers with 40 RBI, good for eighth in the league.

Kruetzer also has six triples on the year to go with his 10 home runs, tops in the MIAA and one off the national lead. His 93 total bases are fourth-most in the conference and 14th-most in Division II.

Tanner Vaughn&nbsp;and Ty Riley&nbsp;are tied for the team lead with 45 strikeouts this season, seventh-most in the MIAA. Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri State are the only two conference teams with multiple pitchers that rank in the top eight in strikeouts this season.

Three Tiger starters rank in the top seven in the MIAA for ERA among qualified pitchers, including Riley ranked second (2.95), Dylan Rinker&nbsp;ranked sixth (4.08) and Cade Fleharty&nbsp;ranked seventh (4.20). Riley's opposing batting average of .216 ranks third-best in the conference.

The Tigers are 28-38 all-time against Northwest Missouri State in a series that began in 1973. Fort Hays State took two-of-three against the Bearcats last season in Hays, giving FHSU a 2-1 edge during the Justin Wichert&nbsp;era. The teams have split the last 10 games evenly, 5-5.

Northwest Missouri State enters the weekend winners of four of its last six games. The Bearcats have worked 193 walks on the year, third-most in the conference and 14th-most in Division II. Ryan Williams leads the Bearcats in batting average (.406) and on-base percentage (.516), ranking third in the conference in both categories, while Trey Morris is second in the league with 46 RBI this season. Casey Stalzer leads the MIAA with 60 strikeouts on the year, with Friday night starter Quinn Mason also in the top five in the league with 47 punchouts this season.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs ran their win streak to four
straight games Thursday as they completed a doubleheader sweep of the Holcomb
Longhorns at home winning 7-3 and 11-1.

GAME 1: TMP 7, Holcomb 3 Both teams struck early in the first game of the
doubleheader before the Monarchs rallied late for a 7-3 victory.

Holcomb got on the board first in the top of the first
before TMP answered with an RBI single from Ian Nehls in the bottom of the
inning tying the game at one.

The Longhorns got two more in the top of the third inning
and held onto that lead until the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Monarchs scored four runs in the inning, building a 5-3
TMP lead.

Braxton Basgall got the scoring with a sacrifice fly making
it 3-2.

The Ty Schmeidler, Logan Baalman and Adler Brown added three
straight RBI singles putting TMP up 5-3 through five innings.

Carson Liles capped off the Monarchs victory in game one
with a two-run single making it 7-3.

Baalman earned the win on the mound for TMP.

In his first career start, he recorded his first complete
game victory. He allowed three runs, one earned with four walks and nine strikeouts.

All but two Monarchs recorded a hit and all but three
Monarchs drove in a run.

Nehls and Baalman each collected a pair of hits for TMP.
Liles drove in two runs.

GAME 2: TMP 11, Holcomb 1 (5 innings)

The Monarchs offense carried its success over from game one
into the first two innings of game two on their way to an 11-1 win in five
innings.

The Monarchs wasted little time getting on the board in game
two scoring five runs in the first and four more in the second. 

Ian Nehls singled home the game's first run forr TMP in the
bottom of the first inning. Nehls then scored on a bases loaded walk and Adler
Brown collected his first of three RBIs in game two putting TMP up 3-0.

TMP also scored on an error by the catcher and a Jacob Seib
walk to make it 5-0 TMP.

The second inning was more of the same with TMP scoring on a
Ty Schmeidler RBI groundout, an error, a stolen base and a Connor Breit single
for a 9-0 TMP lead though two innings.

The lead was more than enough for TMP pitcher Carson Liles
who allowed just one run on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts in
five innings.

Brown capped of the game with a two-run double in the bottom
of the fourth inning putting TMP up 11-1 on their way to the run-rule victory.

Baalman scored three times for TMP. He and Liles each
collected a pair of his for the Monarchs.

TMP improved to 5-1 with the victory and will travel to
Ellinwood on Friday.

⚾ Monarchs complete sweep of Holcomb

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nelson Velázquez and MJ Melendez each homered and drove in two runs, leading Seth Lugo and the Kansas City Royals to a 10-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the sixth inning before Kansas City broke it open with eight runs in the seventh.

Velázquez drove in the first two runs of the game with a single and a homer.

“I was just trying to make contact,” he said. “I’m feeling good, trusting in everything we have been working on since spring training.”

Lugo (1-0) allowed one run and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings for his first win with the Royals. It was the latest quality outing by one of Kansas City's starters, who have a 1.43 ERA.

“Seth attacked from the beginning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He threw a ton of strikes and mixed in all his pitches. He gets a lot of groundballs.”

Lugo struck out three and walked two. Angel Zerpa retired Andrew Benintendi with a runner on second to end the seventh, preserving a one-run lead.

“I thought I made some good pitches,” Lugo said. “They had some soft hits.”

Michael Soroka (0-1) gave up two runs and six hits over six innings in his second start for the White Sox.

Kansas City scored in the second on an RBI single by Velázquez.

The White Sox loaded the bases with one out in the third on a pair of singles and an error by shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., but Witt redeemed himself by turning an inning-ending double play.

“Ironically, before the game we were looking at it, we had only turned one double play prior to tonight," Quatraro said. "I don’t know how many it was tonight, three or four, but that was the key in keeping out of trouble along with throwing out the run at the plate.”

Velázquez made it 2-0 in the fourth with a 429-foot homer into the fountains in left-center.

Chicago got a run off Lugo in the sixth, snapping a scoreless streak of 25 innings. Andrew Vaughn lined a single to score Yoán Moncada. Lugo escaped further damage when Braden Shewmake flied out and Renfroe cut down Gavin Sheets at the plate tagging up from third.

The Royals busted it open in the seventh. Deivi García issued a pair of one-out walks and a single to pinch-hitter Adam Frazier. Kyle Isbel drove in two runs with a single and Maikel Garcia drove in another, chasing García. Dominic Leone walked Witt before a two-out error by Shewmake at shortstop scored three more.

“(The walks) really opened up the floodgates,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “Anytime you walk two guys, you’re asking for trouble. It’s just one inning of baseball that got away from us. We made a couple of mistakes, both fundamentally and physically, that we’ve got to clean up.”

Melendez then smacked his first homer of the season, a two-run shot.

“It was a good ballgame until the seventh inning and we let it get away from us there," Grifol said. "Crooked numbers, they always have a walk in there somewhere. Walks will kill you.”

Chicago signed RHP Mike Clevinger to a $3 million, one-year contract and optioned him to the minors. To make room on the 40-man roster, INF José Rodríguez was designated for assignment.

After falling in the first contest 6-0, the Tigers had a late come-from-behind victory in game two forcing extra innings and then won 5-4 on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth. FHSU moved to 17-17 overall on the season, 3-9 in the MIAA, while ESU moved to 25-16 overall, 9-9 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Emporia State 6, Fort Hays State 0 Fort Hays State struggled to find its offensive footing against Emporia State in the first game against Hornet starter Gracie Rabe, who allowed just four hits in a complete-game shutout effort. The four hits were scattered among four different Tigers.

The Hornets immediately took a 1-0 lead with a double and then RBI single to start the game. ESU added three more runs in the second and then a pair in the fifth to round out its scoring for the game. Abbey Ward and Emma Furnish each had three hits for the Hornets and all three of Furnish's hits were triples. Two of the Hornet runs scored on passed balls in the second inning.

Savannah Egger&nbsp;(9-8) took the loss for FHSU. Three of the four runs she allowed in 1 2/3 innings of work were earned. Bailey Carlson and Emma Montoya&nbsp;each threw 2.2 innings of relief work. The trio combined to strike out five in the game. Rabe moved to 7-7 on the season with the win, striking out five.

However, the Hornets would rally for a run in the third and three in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Tigers then put together a seventh-inning rally to get the game tied and went on to win in the eighth on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Audrey Gillsepie.

In the first, Loren Beggs&nbsp;plated FHSU's first two runs of the day with a two-RBI single. Peyton Shepard&nbsp;forced in a run in the second with an RBI bases loaded walk. That chased ESU starter Jayda VanAckeren from the game.

Emporia State scratched its first run across in the third with a two-out double and single. In the fifth, the Hornets rallied on two outs again when Bailey Flewelling tripled to right-center field and drove in a pair of runs to tie the game. A batter later, Karli Wehunt doubled home Flewelling to put the Hornets in front by a run.

Jordan Harrison did well for ESU in relief until running into trouble in the seventh. Alondra Dominguez and Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;both singled to open the inning and then Regan Curry&nbsp;singled to load the bases with one out. Madison Pierce&nbsp;pinch hit and drew a bases loaded walk that tied the game, but FHSU could not push across the winning run in the seventh after Gracie Rabe relieved Harrison. It would only take until the next inning when the Tigers finally broke through for the first time of the day against Rabe. Three-straight singles by Beggs, Dominguez, and Tiffany set up the walk-off sacrifice fly to center field by Audrey Gillespie.

Emma Montoya&nbsp;was huge for the Tigers in relief, entering in the sixth inning with one out in place of Morgan Schmidt, who went 5 1/3 innings in her start with one strikeout. Montoya struck out four batters over her 2 2/3 innings of relief, moving to 2-0 on the season with a relief win. She retired the final eight Hornet batters of the game.

DODGE CITY – The Hays
High softball team finished off a three-game Western Athletic Conference sweep
of Dodge City. After beating the Red Demons 4-2 on Tuesday in Hays, the Indians
won 10-4 and 13-3 Thursday in Dodge City.

HHS is now 3-2 on the
season. They host Garden City Tuesday in a single game at the Bickle-Schmidt
Sports Complex.

Game 1: Hays
10, Dodge City 4
The Indians scored a run in the first inning then five in the second to take
control. D Schmidt scored the first run when Dani Willeford reached on an
error. Riley Dreher and Lakyn Zimmerman hit back to back home runs to highlight
the five-run second. Dreher’s was&nbsp;
three-run shot.

Dreher added an RBI
double in the fourth to push the HHS lead to 7-0.

Zimmerman added another solo
homer in the sixth.

Jaylee Summers had three

⛳ HHS finishes sixth in season-opening tournament

DALLAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs' player Rashee Rice was the driver of one of two speeding sports cars who left after causing a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rashee-rice-sports-car-crash-24b9e3281d0bca8c0c13a0cedda57b93">chain-reaction crash</a>&nbsp;on a Dallas highway over the weekend, the wide receiver's attorney said Thursday.

Why Rice left the crash Saturday was “a good question that's still being investigated," said Rice’s attorney, state Sen. Royce West, but he declined to elaborate. West expects charges to be filed against Rice, who was driving a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle, he said at a news conference without his client.

“He’s a young man that made a mistake,” West said Thursday, adding that Rice’s “heart goes out” to those who were injured. The crash involved the Lamborghini, a Corvette and four other vehicles and left four people with minor injuries, police said.

The driver of the Corvette also left without determining whether anyone needed medical attention or providing their information, police said. The Corvette belongs to Rice, West said Thursday, but no information has been released on the driver.

Rice&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/doub11e_r/">posted to his Instagram Story</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday that he was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-rashee-rice-car-crash-dallas-bbc86e5cccc79d7bbce5103070995994">taking “full responsibility”</a>&nbsp;for his part in the wreck.

Police have said the drivers of the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far left lane when they lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing the chain collision.

West said that Rice, who is 23, will “do everything in his power to bring their life back to as normal as possible in terms of injuries, in terms of property damage.”

Investigators are interviewing witnesses, victims and others who may have been involved, police said Thursday.

HAYS - If you look up the word "persevere" you would find among the definitions "to continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty." You also might find the face of Hays High senior Cyrus Johnson.

Thursday Johnson made his decision official to attend Baker University to play football. The road to the end of his high school journey sure did take a winding road.&nbsp;

Johnson moved to Hays from Colby following his freshman year. But even prior to that he had to go through a knee injury in middle school.&nbsp;

When Johnson transferred to Hays he did so with a couple of thoughts in his mind. One of those was that playing for the Indians would provide him the best opportunity to play in college. He also thought he would be used at multiple positions on the field.&nbsp;

As a speedy player Johnson was set to see time at running back and linebacker. He would have to wait his turn as a sophomore behind a very talented senior class. Injury then would derail his junior season. Though a different injury, Johnson injured the same knee he did in middle school.

That led to a cross roads. Following the injury Johnson wouldn't be the same player. Which led to a reincarnation on the field. Johnson bulked up to 210 pounds and moved to defensive end for his senior year where he found a starting spot on the field and eventually a college opportunity.

Head coach Tony Crough said among Johnson's unique abilities is his ability to recall information about the Indian's opponent and their game film. Crough mentioned there was several times in practice that Johnson would call out the exact spot on film the coaches would reference while on the field.

Hays High went 7-3 this past season and won a fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference title.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Former Fort Hays State Softball standout and FHSU Tiger Sports Hall of Fame member Maddie Holub has been selected for induction into the MIAA Hall of Fame on Monday, June 3, 2024 in Kansas City, Mo. The induction will be part of the annual MIAA Awards Celebration that evening at the Kansas City Music Hall. A native of Hays, Kan., Holub is the most decorated player in FHSU Softball's NCAA Division II history, putting up mind-blowing accomplishments during her four-year career as a Tiger, especially her senior year of 2013.

A snapshot of Holub's accomplishments include All-America First Team honors in 2013 as a pitcher by both the NFCA and Daktronics, the 2013 Daktronics Central Region Pitcher of the Year, the first-ever player to be named both the MIAA Pitcher of the Year and MIAA Player of the Year for the same season in 2013, an all-region performer three of her four years, a five-time All-MIAA selection, and seven career no-hitters as a pitcher.

Holub is part of a class of 11 individuals that will be inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame this year. She will be the first athlete from FHSU to go into the MIAA Hall of Fame, as the school's history with the conference started in 2006-07.

First-Ever MIAA Pitcher and Player of the Year The 2013 season was a special year for Tiger Softball as the program won a record 47 games on its way to the No. 1 seed in the Central Region of the NCAA Tournament. Maddie Holub was an absolute force of nature in her senior campaign, so much that coaches voted her both the MIAA Pitcher of the Year and MIAA Player of the Year, a first for the conference in softball that still has not been repeated to this day. Holub was among the nation's elite on both sides of the ball, one of the most dominant pitchers in the country as evidenced by a pair of All-America First Team selections at the position, but among the best with a bat in her hands as well with numbers good enough to be an All-America caliber hitter. It was a rare occasion where it was hard to nominate her for honors on just one side of the ball, and coaches made that clear by honoring her with both titles. She was the MIAA Pitcher of the Week seven times that season and nabbed Hitter of the Week honors once as well, while also earning NFCA National Pitcher of the Week honors twice in 2013 and even once the season before.

A Senior Season for the Ages Here was the Holub senior season stat line in 2013… Pitching&nbsp;– 1.03 ERA, 29-4 record, 345 strikeouts in 224 innings pitched, 6 no-hitters, 2 perfect games, 26 complete games, 13 shutouts, 3 saves, .129 opponent batting average for the season. Hitting&nbsp;- .426 batting average, 19 home runs, 10 doubles, 3 triples, 56 RBIs, 62 runs scored, 10 stolen bases, .841 slugging percentage, .516 on-base percentage.

Career Stat Line Pitching – 1.97 ERA, 974 strikeouts in 727.2 innings pitched, 77 wins, 93 complete games, 25 shutouts, 7 no-hitters, 7 saves, .189 opponent batting average. Hitting - .372 batting average, 255 hits, 46 home runs, 42 doubles, 7 triples, 160 RBIs, 183 runs scored, 35 stolen bases.

7 Career No-Hitters, 6 as a Senior – Including Back-to-Back Perfect Games After throwing her first career no-hitter as a junior in 2012 at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo., Holub took her dominance in the pitching circle to the next level as a senior. She threw an MIAA record six no-hitters in 2013, including a pair in the MIAA Tournament that helped FHSU to the conference tournament title and the No. 1 seed and ranking in the Central Region.

Truman was the first victim that season on March 29 in Kirksville, Mo. Holub produced a nine-strikeout performance with just one walk allowed and one hit batter. The Tigers won the game 1-0, thanks to Holub helping her own cause with a solo homer in the third.

Holub went through probably her most dominant stretch in the circle as a Tiger in early April, when she put together a string of performances that is stuff of legend. The build up to accomplishing something no other pitcher had ever done in NCAA history started on Friday, April 5, 2013 when Holub went toe-to-toe with Jackie Bishop of Missouri Western (also going into the MIAA Hall of Fame this year) in an all-out pitcher's duel in Hays. It wasn't one of Holub's no-hitter performances of the season, but rather an all-out test of endurance in the pitching circle. Neither pitcher blinked through nine innings as FHSU and MWSU were scoreless in the first contest of a doubleheader. With two extra innings already in the books, MIAA rules at the time placed runners at second from the 10th&nbsp;inning onward in games not decided by playing straight up through nine innings. MWSU broke through by scoring their free runner in the 10th, but FHSU matched it on a key two-out hit in the bottom of the 10th. Holub held MWSU from scoring the next two innings and FHSU ended the epic battle with a run in the bottom of the 12th. Why mention this game…because Holub would start her claim to a piece to NCAA history the next day, on the heels of throwing a 12-inning complete game with a school-record 17 strikeouts on 195 pitches.

Most pitchers would probably be fatigued from throwing a 12-inning complete game a day prior, but Holub found yet another gear on Saturday, April 6, 2013, when Northwest Missouri State came to Hays. She mowed through the first six NWMSU batters, all by strikeout. She struck out two batters in both the third and fourth innings, only interrupted by foul pop ups for outs in each frame. In the bottom of the fourth, like her no-hitter earlier in the season at Truman, Holub helped her own cause by driving it FHSU's only run of the game with a double. In the fifth, she punched out three more batters to reach 13 for the game. The first ball put in play in fair territory for NWMSU occurred in the sixth on a weak ground out to first base, then Holub punched out two more to reach 15. NWMSU started the seventh with another infield pop up, then Holub put the finishing touches on her first career perfect game with two more strikeouts to match her school record, set just the day before, with 17 again. She did not allow a ball out of the infield the entire game.

With one perfect game in hand, Holub's next start came against Missouri Southern the following week in Hays on April 12, 2013. The magic returned to Tiger Stadium as Holub had the stadium buzzing once again with nine strikeouts through her first 12 batters faced. FHSU picked up its first run in the fourth and then tacked on four more in the sixth to give Holub more breathing room this time. She helped in the four-run sixth by blasting a two-run homer and then went on to complete a second-straight perfect game, striking out the final batter of the game for a 14-strikeout performance in a 5-0 FHSU win. With that, she became the first player in NCAA history (any NCAA level) to throw perfect games in back-to-back starts.

The following weekend on the road, Holub notched her fourth no-hitter of the season in a 7-0 win at Southwest Baptist (4/20/13), nearly perfect again as she unfortunately hit one batter with two outs in the third inning. She retired the final 13 batters of that game and finished with 13 strikeouts. She nearly had back-to-back no-hitters for the second time of the season the following day, only to see her no-hit bid at Central Missouri spoiled on a hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. She allowed just one walk and one hit in a 12-strikeout performance at UCM.

After garnering MIAA Pitcher and Player of the Year honors, Holub backed it up by tossing two no-hitters in the MIAA Tournament in early May. She blanked Pittsburg State in an 8-0 win for her fifth no-hitter of the season in the opening round with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of a run-rule abbreviated game, pitching through cold and misty/sleeting conditions. She returned the following day to throw a 2-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts against Missouri Western, then vaulted the Tigers into the championship with a five-strikeout no-hitter against conference regular-season champ Central Oklahoma. FHSU went on to claim the tournament title against Emporia State and the No. 1 seed in the Central Region of the NCAA Tournament.

Following the magical run of 2013, Holub still owns the MIAA record for most no-hitters in a season (6) and for a career (7).An impressive note from within the stretch where Holub threw perfect games in consecutive starts, she threw 21 consecutive no-hit innings overall. Big Numbers at the Plate Holub had 95 extra-base hits in her career at FHSU, producing a career slugging percentage of .655. She recorded at least 50 hits all four of her seasons at FHSU, including 70 or more as a freshman and senior. She hit over .300 in all four years and over .400 her senior year. Holub drove in at least 30 runs in three of four seasons and 50 or more in two seasons. She hit at least eight home runs all four seasons and at least 10 her final two seasons. In 2013, she had the game-winning RBI in five of FHSU's wins by one run, helping her own pitching cause in all five. On the day she threw her first perfect game (April 6), she picked up a win in two innings of relief in game two and delivered the walk-off RBI single in an extra-inning victory for FHSU.

Walk Off in the 2013 NCAA Regional In the 2013 NCAA Central Regional hosted in Hays at Tiger Stadium, Holub produced the final storybook moment in her collegiate career when she hit a walk-off 3-run home run against Minot State. Holub fanned 12 batters in her pitching performance in the circle through seven innings, then with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in a 2-2 game, launched the first pitch she saw over the left field wall to send the Tigers into the region championship game. It was the final win for the Tigers that magical season.

34 Records Set at FHSU By the end of her four-year playing career at FHSU, Holub owned 34 school records (19 pitching and 15 hitting) for career, season, and single-game combined and still owns a good majority of those records today. In just 2013 alone, Holub broke 12 single-season marks at FHSU which included appearances, wins, winning percentage, fewest hits allowed per innings pitched, strikeouts, and lowest ERA as a pitcher, along with runs scored, home runs, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, and walks as a batter.

Impressive in the Classroom Holub was not only well decorated for her accomplishments on the field, but also in the classroom. She was a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team selection in 2013. Holub was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, a four-time MIAA Scholar-Athlete, a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, and a three-time recipient of the NFCA Scholar-Athlete award. In 2013, she was a finalist for the MIAA Ken B. Jones Award and an FHSU Torch Award nominee for her outstanding student academics and leadership.

Perfect in Her First Start as a Pro Holub took the opportunity to play professionally in Italy her first year removed from collegiate softball. She threw a perfect game in her first professional pitching start in 2014 with Labadini Collecchio and went on to throw a second no-hitter and post an 0.74 ERA that season.

Continuing Her Career in Softball Following her professional stint in Italy, Holub became an assistant coach for former FHSU head coach Erin Kinberger at St. Leo University in Florida. She was an assistant at St. Leo for four years before moving on to the Pitching Coach role at Marshall University from 2018-2023 under head coach Megan Smith Lyon. In the summer of 2023, Megan Smith Lyon became head coach at the University of North Carolina and Holub joined her as the Pitching Coach there, where she is in her first year with the Tar Heels.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She allowed just two hits in six of her other complete games of 2013.Big Numbers at the Plate Holub had 95 extra-base hits in her career at FHSU, producing a career slugging percentage of .655. She recorded at least 50 hits all four of her seasons at FHSU, including 70 or more as a freshman and senior. She hit over .300 in all four years and over .400 her senior year. Holub drove in at least 30 runs in three of four seasons and 50 or more in two seasons. She hit at least eight home runs all four seasons and at least 10 her final two seasons. In 2013, she had the game-winning RBI in five of FHSU's wins by one run, helping her own pitching cause in all five. On the day she threw her first perfect game (April 6), she picked up a win in two innings of relief in game two and delivered the walk-off RBI single in an extra-inning victory for FHSU.Walk Off in the 2013 NCAA Regional In the 2013 NCAA Central Regional hosted in Hays at Tiger Stadium, Holub produced the final storybook moment in her collegiate career when she hit a walk-off 3-run home run against Minot State. Holub fanned 12 batters in her pitching performance in the circle through seven innings, then with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in a 2-2 game, launched the first pitch she saw over the left field wall to send the Tigers into the region championship game. It was the final win for the Tigers that magical season.34 Records Set at FHSU By the end of her four-year playing career at FHSU, Holub owned 34 school records (19 pitching and 15 hitting) for career, season, and single-game combined and still owns a good majority of those records today. In just 2013 alone, Holub broke 12 single-season marks at FHSU which included appearances, wins, winning percentage, fewest hits allowed per innings pitched, strikeouts, and lowest ERA as a pitcher, along with runs scored, home runs, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, and walks as a batter.Impressive in the Classroom Holub was not only well decorated for her accomplishments on the field, but also in the classroom. She was a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team selection in 2013. Holub was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, a four-time MIAA Scholar-Athlete, a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, and a three-time recipient of the NFCA Scholar-Athlete award. In 2013, she was a finalist for the MIAA Ken B. Jones Award and an FHSU Torch Award nominee for her outstanding student academics and leadership.Perfect in Her First Start as a Pro Holub took the opportunity to play professionally in Italy her first year removed from collegiate softball. She threw a perfect game in her first professional pitching start in 2014 with Labadini Collecchio and went on to throw a second no-hitter and post an 0.74 ERA that season.Continuing Her Career in Softball Following her professional stint in Italy, Holub became an assistant coach for former FHSU head coach Erin Kinberger at St. Leo University in Florida. She was an assistant at St. Leo for four years before moving on to the Pitching Coach role at Marshall University from 2018-2023 under head coach Megan Smith Lyon. In the summer of 2023, Megan Smith Lyon became head coach at the University of North Carolina and Holub joined her as the Pitching Coach there, where she is in her first year with the Tar Heels.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS - Hays High baseball will dedicate their new all turf field on Friday prior to their double header with Garden City. The field will be named for former long time coaches Frank Leo and Keith Harper.

The turf was installed by Mammoth Sports Construction. They have donated hamburgers and hot dogs for the event. Nex-Tech will be on hand to cook up the food. There will prizes given away as well.

The field dedication will take place at 3:50 prior to the 5-1 Hays High Indians taking on 4-1 Garden City in a Western Athletic Conference double header.

BALTIMORE (AP) — James McCann had a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning and the Baltimore Orioles emerged from a five-hour rain delay to beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Baltimore trailed 3-0 in the eighth before scoring twice against the Kansas City bullpen, which wasted a masterful performance by starter Cole Ragans.

It was 3-2 in the ninth when Royals closer Will Smith (0-2) walked Ryan Mountcastle and gave up a single to Anthony Santander. After a sacrifice bunt, an intentional walk to load the bases and a strikeout, McCann lined a single into left to end it.

The deciding matchup in the three-game series was supposed to start at 1:05 p.m., but didn’t get under way until early evening. The Royals weren’t scheduled to return to Baltimore after the game, so waiting out a persistent rainstorm meant the teams wouldn’t have to play a makeup months down the road.

The fans who endured the long wait were rewarded by being allowed to choose any open seat in addition to receiving a voucher for a future weekday game.

Ragans retired 18 of the first 19 batters, the lone exception a fourth-inning double by Adley Rutschman. The right-hander was pulled in the seventh after walking two and striking out Santander.

Ragan worked 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Maikel Garcia homered and Salvador Perez had three hits and two RBIs for the Royals, who lost both games in the series on Baltimore's final at-bat.

Orioles starter Corbin Burnes gave up two runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Although the right-hander kept the game close, his performance was a notch below his Orioles debut on opening day, when he limited the Los Angeles Angels to one hit over six innings while striking out 11.

Perez hit RBI singles in the first and third innings, and Garcia went deep against Mike Baumann in the seventh.

In the Baltimore eighth, Gunnar Henderson hit a sacrifice fly and Rutschman singled in a run but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Yennier Cano (1-0) got the win with a scoreless ninth.

Royals: Seth Lugo (0-0, 0.00 ERA) faces the visiting Chicago White Sox on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.
