🎤Post Podcast: FHSU students returning; FHSU Police share what you need to know

On Jan. 1, the Hays Public Library started an automatic renewal system, giving patrons an easier way to extend their checkouts.

The new program is in effect for materials checked out from the library after Jan. 1, said HPL Communications Coordinator Callie Kolacny.

"Anything checked out after that date will automatically renew on the due date," she said.

There are however two caveats to the program that would require the item to be returned on or before the due date.

"If you have already renewed the item the maximum number of times or somebody else has put the item on hold ... then you will have to return it," Kolacny said.

Otherwise, the item will be extended for another check-out period.

Notifications will be sent to let the patron know the item has been automatically renewed or if it needs to be returned to the library.

"We don't have late fines and so it won't hurt you if you don't then get it returned until the next day," Kolacny said.

The new feature will work in conjunction with the online renewal that was already in place.

"You can renew things online, so you don't have to come to the library, but still sometimes people forget about it, or they have so many other things going on," she said. "Now it will just automatically renew."&nbsp;

The renewal system applies to all media checked out from the library.

"It's books, it's movies, it's music," Kolacny said. "And it will renew for the same amount of time that you originally would have it."

Notifications will still be sent a couple of days before the due date, via email, and the new auto-renewal alerts will come via email as well.

The new system will not change the current policy on items that are not returned. Items that have not been returned significantly after their due date will be classified as a lost item and after $50 in lost items on an account, the user will no longer be allowed to check out materials.

"We work on tax dollars so we need to be able to replace those items," Kolacny said. "It takes a while to get $50 worth of lost items and so it hasn't really become a big issue."

🎤Post Podcast: HACC adapting to new business landscape

Staff, volunteers and the board of directors from the Humane Society of the High Plains,&nbsp;2050 East US Highway 40, this week are finalizing preparations for their largest fundraiser of the year, the 23rd annual "Soup 'R Bowl," on Jan. 26 at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

"We have pretty much everything set up," said Betty Hansen, manager of the Virginia Miller Animal Shelter. "We have a really great number of volunteers this year and our board of directors has been working really hard."

"It's fun for our staff, it's fun for our board of directors, it's fun for the volunteers that help us," she said. "It's just a fun day."

Four more chefs have signed up for this year's event, for a total of 17, which Hansen said is "more than usual," but continues the trend of a larger event every year.&nbsp;

A few years ago the event had become so large they had to expand.

"This year, again, we will be using both buildings, the Shank and the Unrein," Hansen said.

Attendees of the event will also have the opportunity to visit vendor booths, win door prizes and enter a raffle.

"It's always a great event, we always have lots of people come out," Hansen said. "It's a great social event."

"There will be a lot of tables if you want to sit and eat," or you can wander around and visit, she said.

One of the more popular items at the event is a large dessert table.

"The last couple of years we have had a huge dessert table, that keeps getting bigger every year," Hansen said. "It's just about anything you can think of is going to be on the dessert table."

While the event is designed to be fun for the community, it also serves a purpose for the society.

"It's the biggest fundraiser that we have every year — and it just keeps getting bigger," Hansen said.&nbsp;"When we do a fundraiser, those funds go directly to the animals." 

Specifically, the proceeds go toward a medical fund for animals at the shelter.

And Hansen also said attendees need not worry about missing the other "bowl."

"It's a week before the actual game, so you don't have to worry about that," she said.

The event is set to kick off at 11 1.m. and run until 1 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

"We are pumped and almost ready to go," Hansen said.

Tickets are available at the shelter, Cerv's locations, all three Hays veterinarians and PetSense, Barkly Suites and Fur is Flying for $7 prior to the event and $8 at the door.

🎤Post Podcast: HACC annual banquet approaching

On Monday, the Hays Recreation Commission worked to launch a new website to better share programs and activities at the facility.

"Today, we have launched <a href="http://www.haysrec.org/">our new website</a>," said Superintendent Roger Bixenman. "We have redeveloped it so that will come out later today."

The new website has been in process since their website was hacked last fall.&nbsp;

"We were already in the process of updating it," Bixenman said. "That just kind of pushed it up a little bit."

The new website features a cleaner look with large images and quick access to helpful information about the facility and their current activities.

🎤Post Podcast: Ellis County EMS helping community with food drive Monday

Former Hays resident Max Haverfield will return to the area this week to present "Max Haverfield and Friends: A Christmas Show."

The ensemble of 10 performers will begin the area shows in Hays at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall, and will continue throughout the area stopping in Colby, Scott City and Oakley during the week.&nbsp;

"It's what I have been calling a modern take on 'The Andy Williams' Show,' " Haverfield said. "It's a fun, lighter program than I've done in the past."

The show will incorporate some well-known Christmas classics.

"We definitely hit the big ones, but have taken a lighter touch this year," Haverfield said.

This will be the fourth time Haverfield has toured the area, previously completing a patriotic show and other Christmas programs.

While he resides in Kansas City, he has a residence in Winona. He incorporates performers from both areas into the show.

As a Fort Hays State University graduate, he said he tours in the area because of his time here and credits FHSU with a great music program.

"We've done a few show in Kansas City, but the greatest support we get is still in western Kansas," Haverfield said.

                    </figure><p><b>By JAMES BELL</b><br><i>Hays Post</i></p><p>Former Hays resident Max Haverfield will return to the area this week to present "Max Haverfield and Friends: A Christmas Show."</p><p>The ensemble of 10 performers will begin the area shows in Hays at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall, and will continue throughout the area stopping in Colby, Scott City and Oakley during the week.&nbsp;</p><p>"It's what I have been calling a modern take on 'The Andy Williams' Show,' " Haverfield said. "It's a fun, lighter program than I've done in the past."</p><p>The show will incorporate some well-known Christmas classics.</p><p>"We definitely hit the big ones, but have taken a lighter touch this year," Haverfield said.</p><p>This will be the fourth time Haverfield has toured the area, previously completing a patriotic show and other Christmas programs.</p><p>While he resides in Kansas City, he has a residence in Winona.
