Ellis County parents looking for early childhood care will have
another option next year with the recent announcement of the expansion of Holy
Family Elementary’s early childhood program.

The result is what they have named Precious Creations and
reflects months of work by school staff and an effort to help alleviate the
ongoing childcare crisis in the area.

“We have had a task force working since August on a project
to expand our early childcare program,” said Holy Family Elementary Principal
Rachel Wentling. 

Thanks to those efforts, she said they would offer all-day
preschool options for 3- and 4-year-olds next year. 

“We are now expanding from the four-day 4-year-old option
that's only half days to five days of preschool with both a half day and a full
day option,” Wentling said. “And we're adding a 3-year-old preschool that
will offer a half-day and full-day option.”

“We know that there's been a crisis in our community for
childcare, we know that need exists out there,” Wentling said. “So, we're
really happy and excited to be a part of a solution for some of our families.
And maybe, for some of our families that have had a hard time finding
childcare, they might come to Holy Family. We might get new families, but then
that will open up other spots available in our community.

“Enrollment of the 4-year-old preschool is capped at 44
students, 22 in the morning program and 22 in the afternoon program,” according
to the program announcement. 

Twelve spots will be available in the 3-year-old full-day
program, with 18 full-day positions available.

After the morning curricular instruction, the 3- and
4-year-old program will offer combined&nbsp;
lunch, rest time, and structured and free play activities.

While the new program will help alleviate the ongoing need,
she said, like many other area institutions, they are limited by space, but the
expanded program will add full-time spots at a price comparable to other area
daycare centers.

“I wish we could do more, but our facilities just don't have
enough space and personnel,” Wentling said. “So, we're going to do what we can.”

The free space available for Precious Creations was created as
the Hays Catholic schools transition sixth grade from Holy Family to Thomas
More Prep-Marian.

“That opened up two classrooms,” Wentling said. “Space is
always an issue for Holy Family. So we're going to take one of those classrooms
and dedicate it to an additional preschool and all-day extended care option.”

She said some work would need completed to get the room
ready for its new mission, but it will be minor.

“We are really in pretty good shape,” Wentling said. “That
was what made this decision really easy. Our classrooms that are on the bottom
floor for our youngest students are all up to code with the fire code and
safety needs.

“There's a couple things that we'll need to do, but nothing
major.”

She said new staff would also need to be hired along with
the facility expansion.

“That is something that's very exciting,” Wentling said. “And
we'll be adding, as well, a teacher's aide. … It's all dependent on our
enrollment, but at this time, if we are full, we're looking at both of those
being full-time options.”

She said while the development has only been known internally
for a short time, there has been substantial interest in the program.

“We're very excited to now get this out publicly and see if
there are people out there who have not been previously affiliated with Holy
Family that maybe this is something they want to consider,” Wentling said.

While the school is affiliated with the Catholic Church,
affiliation with the church is not a requirement for enrollment.

“We are open to people of all faith backgrounds,” Wentling
said. “You don't have to be Catholic to come to Holy Family. … If you are not
registered with one of the parishes, that's not a problem at all. We offer
tuition, and we do have the opportunity for people to apply for tuition
assistance.

“We have a program that you fill out your information, and
then it will process all of it and let us know kind of where that tuition
number should land. We also have very generous donors that offer fee assistance
for people who would like to go to our schools but maybe financially, it could
be a bit of a burden.”

She said the goal is never to let finances stand in the
way of attending the school, whenever possible.

And those affiliated with the church will have the opportunity
to attend as a part of their stewardship.

Precious creations enrollment is open now, and an open house
is planned for 5:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the school to share more details.

“This is not just for preschool, this is for all grade
levels,” Wentling said. “If you haven't been previously affiliated with Holy
Family, and you just want to come and see what we're all about, please come to
that open house.

“It's no commitment. It's very low key, you'll get about a 20- to 30-minute
presentation from me. ... I call it kind of like a 10,000-foot
view of Holy Family — just explaining a few things.”

She said the event would also allow the parents of potential
students to see the school and have their questions answered.

“And most importantly, we're going to have our excellent
Holy Family chocolate chip cookies available for those who come,” Wentling
said. “So bring in your grade school-aged children to come and see our school,
and we would love to talk to you if Holy Family is something they're interested
in.”

🎙 Hays' Holy Family Elementary expands early childhood program

An afternoon of fancy and fun is planned soon at the Hays Public Library.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 5, the Hays Public Library Foundation
will host a traditional afternoon tea in the Schmidt Gallery of the library at 1205
Main.

“We're
going to have an afternoon of different kinds of teas and some fantastic treats,”
said Hays Public Library Communications Coordinator Callie Kolacny. “We'll have
some bread from Cathy's Breads. We're going to have some cookies and just
different kinds of yummy things that go with the different kinds of teas.”

For
those unfamiliar with the etiquette of a proper afternoon tea party, she said in
line with the library’s mission, the event will be a learning experience and
all are welcome.

“One of
our foundation board members is really into these, and she goes to them all the
time,” Kolacny said. “She's the lead on this and knows what she's talking about
when you're talking about an afternoon tea party.”

She said
attendees would be taken through the different types of teas and things that
you can do with the teas.

“It's
just going to be a fun, fun way to experience something a little bit different
for this area,” Kolacny said.

While
formal dress is not required, Kolacny said it is encouraged.

“Some
ladies will wear dresses, they might wear big hats, pearls and gloves, things
like that,” she said. “The men will dress up a little bit nicer than they might
otherwise.”

The
event, while geared toward a more adult crowd, could also be a fun experience for
an older child, she said.

And while
the experience will be an enjoyable experience, it will also serve as a
fundraiser for the foundation.

“The Hays
Public Library Foundation is basically the fundraising arm of the library,”
Kolacny said. “And so when donations come in, then it goes through the
foundation.”

Along
with events like the Afternoon Tea Party, she said there are various ways to support
the organization throughout the year.

“You can
… write a check to the foundation, or you can bequeath something when you're
looking at your financial planning for the future, you can include the public
library in that, and that goes through the foundation,” Kolacny said. “We also
have an account with the Heartland Community Foundation, so you can make
donations in that way.”

Those foundation
funds go to support the library in various ways.

“They
kind of fund the needs that aren't already budgeted,” Kolacny said. “The
library, of course, has its budget, and we have our plans of what we're going to
do, but other things come up, and we need funding for them.”

She
noted a few recent examples that the foundation helped fund include the Bookmobile
and the large remodel of the facility.

“All of
the donations do support the library in some fashion,” Kolacny said.

Those
services and upgrades, in turn, allow the library to serve as more than just a repository
for books but also a gathering place for the community.

“With
all the digital resources, we still have a significant collection of physical
books, and people want those,” Kolacny said. “But we also have all of the
programs, and they're for all ages. We've got stuff for the littlest kids, the
teenagers, we try to keep them active, especially after school we have some programs
for them. And then, of course, adults, we have lots of programs for adults too. So, it's more of a community center. It's a meeting place, it's a
place to gain some knowledge, to socialize and to just enjoy yourself.”

Mayor Mason Ruder likes to point out he was four years old in 1995 when the city of Hays purchased the R9 Ranch in Edwards County as a long-term water supply.

Now, 28 years later, the project is finally picking up speed, especially in the past year.&nbsp;

"Every day is now an R9 Ranch Day," Ruder declared with a smile during last week's city commission meeting.&nbsp;&nbsp;

City Manager Toby Dougherty updated commissioners on the R9 water transfer process. It started in February 2014 when the then-city commission voted to apply to the state to change the water use from agricultural irrigation to municipal, and begin the approval process.

In June 2015, the change applications were filed and three years later a draft master order was issued through the Division of Water Resources in the Kansas Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;

The master order was issued in March 2019.

&nbsp;The Kansas Water Transfer Act has never been enacted; by statute, the process is purposely slow and meticulous to determine if it's in the best interest of the state for the transfer of water from Edwards County to Ellis County, and then on to Russell County, which owns a small portion of the ranch.

The timeline has been dramatically slowed by several petitions and appeals starting in April 2019 by WaterPACK,&nbsp;Water Protection Association of Central Kansas, the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5dd42db8897d147ad4bb113a">only active opponent</a> in the project.&nbsp;

On June 29, 2022 Judge Bruce Gatterman, chief district judge of the Edwards County District Court, affirmed the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s&nbsp;<a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2019/03/28/chief-engineer-approves-hays-russell-r9-ranch-water-change-applications/">chief engineer’s 2019 approval of the cities’ change applications</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The group of irrigators believes Hays and Russell are being allowed to take too much water from the R9 Ranch, southeast of Kinsley, and there is potential harm in that.

"If they want to drag this out, fine," Dougherty said with a shrug of his shoulders. 

"We've received our positive ruling. We're starting the transfer process. We're moving forward. We don't think they're going to be successful."

Commissioner Sandy Jacobs interrupted Dougherty's report to express her anger at the continued delays and resulting increased cost to the city.

According to Dougherty, the deviations have cost the city about $2 million to date "in attorneys, in engineers. That's hard costs. Soft costs, inflation, you're talking $30-$40 million dollars, in what we could have done versus what it's going to cost now."&nbsp;

Converting water rights for one use to another is a widely used practice across Kansas, Dougherty told the commissioners.&nbsp;

"When you convert irrigation water rights to municipal water rights, you don't get 100% of that. You get a formulaic reduction to protect the water rights around you and to protect the aquifer, to make sure the new use does not use more water than the previous use," he explained.

Early on in the process, Hays and Russell voluntarily agreed to reduce their water rights by another 30% "because we want to make sure we don't do anything to potentially harm the aquifer.

Administrative law judge Matt Spurgen was appointed October 21 as hearing officer of the transfer hearing panel.&nbsp;

By the end of February, replies to the WaterPACK appeal are due from the cities and the Division of Water Resources, followed by another reply from WaterPACK.

By statute, oral arguments should be scheduled this summer with a final decision by the water transfer panel anywhere between October 2023 and May 2024.

With the entire state of Kansas currently in a drought - to various degrees - "it's getting serious again," said Jacobs.&nbsp;

"I would think this is to our benefit. We're talking about water for people, for sustainability of life in our area," she said.

Dougherty again emphasized he has "no doubt we will prevail" in the appeal process and decision by the water transfer panel.&nbsp;

"I am finalizing the wellfield and pipeline project design contracts," he told the commission. "I hope to have those in front of you within the next couple of months for your approval so we can get started on the design contract.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"As soon as the design contracts are approved, we're gonna send that RFQ (Request For Quote) for a land acquisition services firm ... and then start acquiring the land for the pipeline itself."

The R-9 Ranch is being converted to native grass and walk-in hunting from irrigated cropland.

Dougherty said he's been searching for federal funding to help pay for that conversion and a possible move to more public use of the property.

The group of irrigators believes Hays and Russell are being allowed to take too much water from the R9 Ranch, southeast of Kinsley, and there is potential harm in that."If they want to drag this out, fine," Dougherty said with a shrug of his shoulders. "We've received our positive ruling. We're starting the transfer process. We're moving forward. We don't think they're going to be successful."<div><div style="position:relative; overflow:hidden; padding-bottom:56.25%"><iframe src="https://cdn.jwplayer.com/players/zEJdfJ6s-P46diVCW.html" width="100%" height="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" title="Sequence 01" style="position:absolute;" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div>Commissioner Sandy Jacobs interrupted Dougherty's report to express her anger at the continued delays and resulting increased cost to the city.According to Dougherty, the deviations have cost the city about $2 million to date "in attorneys, in engineers. That's hard costs. Soft costs, inflation, you're talking $30-$40 million dollars, in what we could have done versus what it's going to cost now."&nbsp;Converting water rights for one use to another is a widely used practice across Kansas, Dougherty told the commissioners.&nbsp;"When you convert irrigation water rights to municipal water rights, you don't get 100% of that. You get a formulaic reduction to protect the water rights around you and to protect the aquifer, to make sure the new use does not use more water than the previous use," he explained.Early on in the process, Hays and Russell voluntarily agreed to reduce their water rights by another 30% "because we want to make sure we don't do anything to potentially harm the aquifer."To this group, that's not enough."Administrative law judge Matt Spurgen was appointed October 21 as hearing officer of the transfer hearing panel.&nbsp;By the end of February, replies to the WaterPACK appeal are due from the cities and the Division of Water Resources, followed by another reply from WaterPACK.By statute, oral arguments should be scheduled this summer with a final decision by the water transfer panel anywhere between October 2023 and May 2024.<figure>

 </figure>With the entire state of Kansas currently in a drought - to various degrees - "it's getting serious again," said Jacobs.&nbsp;"I would think this is to our benefit. We're talking about water for people, for sustainability of life in our area," she said.Dougherty again emphasized he has "no doubt we will prevail" in the appeal process and decision by the water transfer panel.&nbsp;"I am finalizing the wellfield and pipeline project design contracts," he told the commission. The city of Hays recently released the top dog names and dog breeds for 2022.

Some dog names may be spelled differently, but below are the top 10 dog names listed in the city of Hays registration database.

The city had 1,600 registered pet tags last year. That includes both dogs and cats.

All dogs and cats living in the city of Hays are required to have 2023 city tags by March 1. These tags must be renewed every year.

Nikki Hausler, Hays community service officer, said pet tags help officers quickly reunite pets with their owners.

"When we pick up an animal that has a city pet tag on, we call our dispatch and say we have this number and we can call the owner right away," Hausler said. "We have 24-hour access to the database.

"Instead of driving it all the way out to the shelter and the owner calling five minutes later saying they're missing it, this way we can just take it home."

Hausler said rabies tags will not help officers reunite the pet with its owners during evenings or on weekends when vet clinics are closed.

"[A pet tag] is going to save you impound fees. It's going to save you trips out to the shelter to pick up the animal," she said.

Hausler encouraged pet owners to call the police department as soon as they realize their pet is missing.

"It's not like in the movies. We're about getting them home, safely," she said.

If you do have a pet that ends up at the shelter, you have to pay the impound fee at the police department first and then take that receipt to the shelter to claim the pet, Hausler said.

Pet licenses can be purchased for $5 at the city clerk's office, 1507 Main, if the pet is neutered or spayed. The fee is $25 if the pet is not.

The city has a dangerous dog ordinance. Dangerous dogs, which includes pit bulls or dogs deemed dangerous by the court, need to show proof of microchipping and owners need to provide a photo of the dog.  There is an additional fee of $50 for a dangerous dog.

In order to register a pet, you will need to have documentation from a veterinarian showing the rabies expiration date and if the pet is neutered or spayed.

Pets that have been in your possession and are not licensed by March 1 will incur a late fee of $10 for each month or part of a month after March 1, with a late fee not to exceed $50 for each pet. 

Hausler also offered several tips for caring for pets during winter. If a dog can't be brought inside during cold weather, Hausler suggested an insulated dog house and a heated water bowl or replacing frozen water at least three or four times per day. 

Don't put blankets in dog houses or cat shelters; they tend to draw moisture and can freeze. Hay or straw is preferred.

Just as in hot weather, don't leave a pet in a vehicle during cold weather.

"A car is like a refrigerator, and it's going to get awful cold if you are inside a department store or the mall for any length of time," Hausler said.

Downtown Hays will soon be home to STEM Harvest, a nonprofit
science, technology, engineering and math learning center.

As construction work continues at its future home in 507 Main
and final preparations for the project are made, a recent $10,000 grant award
from NetWorked for Change will help ensure the project starts off right.

The To Infinity and Beyond award will allow STEM Harvest to open
with a pre- and post-event survey and an event for up to 40 children and a
parent.

“The event itself will either be in March or potentially
early April,” said building owner and STEM Harvest founder Dallas Haselhorst. “We
will be presenting at the NetWorked for Change convention in Wichita in May. So we
will have the event obviously, and all the post items wrapped up well before
then, so we can present, essentially, to a lot of other folks across the state
trying to make a difference in their communities as well.”

The STEM Harvest opening event will allow participants to learn about the facility and the services it will provide to the community once fully opened to
the public.

“Anywhere from 20 to 40, kids will be able to come in, learn
a little bit more of everything STEM Harvest can do consolidated into a day,”
Haselhorst said. “And so it kind of introduces kids to all of those different
aspects, especially 3D printing, coding, some of the electronics
aspects, and just give them an opportunity to kind of see some of those things
and what we'll do as part of that grant.”

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/494d469c-fd58-4c88-9317-9c5e6071a68f">The
opening represents the culmination of years of planning as opening STEM Harvest
was a major factor in purchasing the building at 507 Main in 2021, he said.</a>

“We purchased that with a couple of goals in mind. The main
one was going to be a 501(c)3 nonprofit called STEM Harvest that really kind
of brings technology skills and related skills to kids of all ages,” Haselhorst
said.

And now, with the center's opening, he said area youth would
be able to use it to explore various aspects of STEM. 

“All of the kids are going to have to do the three core
tenets, meaning you're going to have to get introduced to those, which is
coding, the electronics aspect and 3D printing,” Haselhorst said. 

But from there, they can build on their own desires and
interests.

“They're really learning the skills, the underlying skills
to do some of the basics, and then just build off of that,” Haselhorst said. “It's
a project-based approach to learning that gets whatever they're
passionate about and lets them go.”

In conjunction with the kickoff event, two surveys will solidify
how potential students would utilize the space.

“The pre-survey will be open to the public to try and get some
input from parents, educators, maybe even kids,” Haselhorst said.

“And then also, we'll do a really quick post-event
survey that will be primarily from the kids that actually attend the event,”
Haselhorst said. “The main thing is that we just want to make sure that they
are getting something out of it, and they're going to want to come back
eventually.”

And while opening the years-long project to the public is a
priority for the space, remodeling the building for other tenants, including
his own TreeTop Security, is also well underway, and office space in the
building should be ready for occupancy soon.

“The three front spaces probably required the most amount of
work out of everything,” Haselhorst said. “STEM Harvest has been receiving
updates throughout.”

Much of the major construction work is done.

“There's a couple of rooms back there that are, other than
paint, they're done,” Haselhorst said. “There's still some work to do, no doubt, but we're
definitely moving in the right direction. And now, with some additional funding
for some supplies and stuff, we can definitely help on some of those aspects.”

science, technology, engineering and math learning center.As construction work continues at its future home in 507 Main
and final preparations for the project are made, a recent $10,000 grant award
from NetWorked for Change will help ensure the project starts off right.The To Infinity and Beyond award will allow STEM Harvest to open
with a pre- and post-event survey and an event for up to 40 children and a
parent.“The event itself will either be in March or potentially
early April,” said building owner and STEM Harvest founder Dallas Haselhorst. “We
will be presenting at the NetWorked for Change convention in Wichita in May. So we
will have the event obviously, and all the post items wrapped up well before
then, so we can present, essentially, to a lot of other folks across the state
trying to make a difference in their communities as well.”The STEM Harvest opening event will allow participants to learn about the facility and the services it will provide to the community once fully opened to
the public.“Anywhere from 20 to 40, kids will be able to come in, learn
a little bit more of everything STEM Harvest can do consolidated into a day,”
Haselhorst said. “And so it kind of introduces kids to all of those different
aspects, especially 3D printing, coding, some of the electronics
aspects, and just give them an opportunity to kind of see some of those things

opening represents the culmination of years of planning as opening STEM Harvest

 </figure>“We purchased that with a couple of goals in mind. The main
one was going to be a 501(c)3 nonprofit called STEM Harvest that really kind
of brings technology skills and related skills to kids of all ages,” Haselhorst
said.And now, with the center's opening, he said area youth would
be able to use it to explore various aspects of STEM. “All of the kids are going to have to do the three core
tenets, meaning you're going to have to get introduced to those, which is
coding, the electronics aspect and 3D printing,” Haselhorst said. But from there, they can build on their own desires and
interests.“They're really learning the skills, the underlying skills
to do some of the basics, and then just build off of that,” Haselhorst said. “It's
a project-based approach to learning that gets whatever they're
passionate about and lets them go.”In conjunction with the kickoff event, two surveys will solidify

Understanding
the value of connecting community leaders, the Hays Chamber is bringing back a
leadership program after the first of the year.

“Oftentimes, we talk about kind of keeping your
bucket full after attending a leadership class and just those moments of
opportunity to engage with other people who have been trying to tune their
leadership muscles and just keeping those conversations going,” said Hays Chamber
president and CEO Sarah Wasinger.

The new program, Igniting
Leadership, is similar to the Konza leadership group, an organization that regularly
brought together graduates of Ellis County leadership programs.

Laurie Kennedy will
spearhead the program.

“It's
open to anybody, but especially people that want to flex their leadership
muscles,” Kennedy said. “So, anybody that's taken Leadership Hays, Dale
Carnegie, really anything in the community, just to keep that conversation and
the spark going about leadership.”

The
meetings are free to attend and open to the public.

“It might
be a great opportunity for you to learn just enough to maybe make you want to
take the class or figure out what your next step in your leadership journey
might look like,” Wasinger said.

She said
it is also designed to establish mentorships and can help those looking for
leadership opportunities.

“We have
our Hays Young Professionals program,” Wasinger said. “We've got our Ambassadors
and our Chamber Board of Directors if you've done all those things, and maybe
you're like, ‘Well, what's that next thing? Where do I fit in?’ We thought that
this program … would be nice for folks who have served in other capacities to
still have a place where they can come in and make a difference.”

But
while those organizational meetings and educational opportunities may serve as a
basis for the group, Kennedy said the group would reflect those participating.

“We’re
wanting it to be very organic and grow as the people who attend [decide] what
they want this to be,” she said. “It's not going to be structured specifically.
Just kind of wherever it leads us. If people have ideas or challenges they've
been facing and want to get different perspectives, they can bring it to us, or
we can bring it up at a later date.”

The
monthly meetings will rotate from lunch to evening to accommodate as many
people as possible.

The
first class is scheduled for noon Jan. 11 at The Press, 230 E. Eighth.

“And
then the rest of the noon times will be March 8, May 10, July 12, Sept. 13, and
Nov. 8,” Wasinger said. 

The
evening sessions are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Defiance Brewing Co. Downtown,
111 W. Seventh, on Feb. 8, April 12, June 14, Aug. 9, Oct. 11, and Dec. 13.

“You are

we kind of get a headcount to make sure we have enough space and be a little

very grateful to have the opportunity to help facilitate and bring that class
to the city of Hays, but just in general, sometimes I feel like we feel lost
after we have those [leadership class] opportunities,” Wasinger said. “And so
this is the place to stay engaged and communicate with people who are like-minded,
who maybe want to make a difference in our community. And who knows, maybe the
next great idea that the Chamber needs to tackle will happen right in the
conversations that will occur in that space.”

Ellis Co. leadership program returns with new direction, name

With just days left in 2022, the Heartland Community
Foundation reported this week grant awards this year total more than any
previous year.

“We were founded in 2007, and when we
look at our total numbers for the year, this was our most amount granted year,”
said executive director Sarah Meitner. “We granted $429,772 in our fiscal year
2022, which is an astounding number.”

Those grant awards were distributed across their three-county
service area, including Ellis, Rooks and Trego counties and included various
projects.

“It was to 67 organizations for 129 projects,” Meitner said,
noting some organizations, like USD 489, for example, received grants for more
than one project.

Along with the yearly benchmarks, she said their overall
giving also reached a notable milestone.

“When we look at that total number, since 2007, we had a
really big milestone at Heartland, we passed the $3 million mark. So, for
projects altogether, we've granted out $3,205,263,” Meitner said. 

And those dollars have helped various groups and impacted a
wide variety of area residents, she said.

“It is to everything,” Meitner said. “It's to healthcare,
it's to schools, it's to victims organizations or to impoverished groups or to
churches. That really touches every element.”

“I like to say to people, you've probably been impacted by a
Heartland Community Foundation grant, you just don't realize it,” she
continued. “We are really truly behind the scenes, helping to give these grant
dollars to our local organizations. And they're the ones doing the amazing
work, they're the ones with feet on the ground, but they can't do it if they
don't have the funds and the support. And that's where we can help.”

organizations like the Heartland Community Foundation to implement initiatives and
programs.“They have great ideas,” Meitner said. “Our local

want to do to take it to the next level or to increase their capabilities or
increase their capacity, they just need a little bit of extra dollars to do it.”And while many generous donors help fund those projects, combined
donations can be even more powerful, she said.“They can depend on charitable dollars, they can depend on
our local donors who are so generous,” Meitner said. “But when you put that
power of endowment to work, it can really fill the gap.” “We were granting some pass-through dollars from the Dane G.
Hanson Foundation, which we’re really, really fortunate to have that
partnership,” she said. But those legacy dollars rely on fundraising to grow.“These are the dollars that we are fundraising for every
February, and it's right around the corner,” Meitner said. “We fundraise during
what we call match month, and as we boost those funds, we can grant even more.”And as the year ends, she said time remains to put charitable
dollars to work and receive the tax benefit for 2022.“I always say talk to your financial advisor, but if there
is a need to lower your taxable income, a great way to do that is to make a
charitable gift,” Meitner said. “And you can open a donor-advised fund with the
Heartland Community Foundation, you get that gift for 2022. But you can decide
later where you want those charitable dollars to go.”She added gifts could be accepted up to the end of the year
as long as they are postmarked by Dec. 31.“But the benefit is that you get that tax deduction for 2022,”
she continued. “You don't even have to make the charitable gift to 2023, you
can make it at any point in the future, which is a really, really kind of neat
way to slide in there and get that donation when you don't quite know where you
want those dollars to go.”
