Wauneta Irene Messenger was born in Scott County, Kansas to Charles and Thelma Snyder Strickert on February 3, 1932.

Wauneta attended Scott County Schools and graduated from high school in 1949.

On November 6, 1949, Wauneta married Donald Ray Messenger and to this union four children were born: Charles (Chuck), who passed away in 2021, Donnetta, who passed away in 1953, Dawnnel, and Chad.

Wauneta was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the LWML.

She had been a member of FCE since 1950, served on the Finney County Extension Council and was a member of the Finney County Senior Center.

She was a real estate agent and broker where she received many awards. In 1995 she was given the “Centurion” award for sales in the top 2% of the nation of Century 21.

Don always said that Wauneta’s hard work in real estate and the income is what helped save the farm and help build the estate; Wauneta would correct him saying “Only by the grace of God” were we so blessed.

Wauneta loved her grandchildren, and her prayer was that she would be a good grandmother as her children did not know their grandmothers as they both had died at early ages.

She had so many sayings, but the one she would tell her grandchildren was “Bod bless you” and “I love You a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”Wauneta loved peoples and never met a stranger. She also loved to play cards, dance, walk, and shop.

Wauneta worked had as a homemaker, wife, mother, and in her real estate profession.She is survived by one daughter, Dawnnel Francis and husband Frank; on daughter-in-law Chuck Messenger’s wife Cindy; one son Chad Messenger and wife Cheryl. Grandsons Jason Ochs and wife Sara, Tyler Messenger and husband Juan, Alex Messenger and wife Denise, and Michael Messenger and Fiancé Audrey Shepherd. Three granddaughters Jody Kerr and husband Brad, Lindy Francis and husband Jeff, &amp; Charyl Obregon and husband Oscar. Three great grandsons, one step great-grandson, seven great granddaughters, and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Every night before they would go to sleep, Don and Wauneta always said to one another, “Goodnight, God bless you and I love you.”Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Garden City with Pastor Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Harold Dwayne Wiley, 68, died February 8, 2024, at Clara Barton Hospital ER, Hoisington, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born August 15, 1955, in Kinsley, Kansas, the son of Robert and Vivian (Lewis) Wiley. &nbsp;

In 2001, he married Angela Hatch in Great Bend. They later divorced but remained close friends.

A resident of Hoisington for over 20 years, Harold spent most of his years working in the oil field. &nbsp;He was a member of New Life Baptist Church of Hoisington. He was always willing to help others and his outgoing and friendly nature made friends wherever he went, including the Friendship House and drinking coffee with his friends at CERVS. He loved playing the lottery, mowing yards, and most importantly his grandkids.

He is survived by his seven children; Rachel (Mike) Cregger of Hutchinson, Jimmy (Sheri) Wiley of Topeka, Robert (Nicole) Wiley of Seward, Geneva Myers of Great Bend, Kyle (Amber) Hatch of Grainfield, David (Kristine Henson) Boese, and Travis Wiley all of Hoisington; five brothers, David (Geneva Sue) Stanley, Robert (Debra) Stanley, Donald Wiley, Mark Wiley, Robert ‘Ronnie” Wiley, and a sister, Amber Chism of Hoisington; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and more than 50 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Hubert Stanley, Donald Stanley, and Bobby Wiley; two sisters, Doris Stanley and Linda Wiley; and significant other, Angela Wiley.

Carolyn L. Neeley, 82, died on January 29, 2024 at Rogue Valley Manor Care Suites in Medford, Oregon. She was born at Garden City, the daughter of Elmer A. &amp; Theola I. (McLeish) Bryant. She married Larry H. Neeley on June 16, 1963 at Dighton.

Carolyn was a loving wife of 60 years and a mother who dedicated her life to her children and family. She enjoyed involvement in her community, showed kindness to everyone, and treasured her friendships. Carolyn attended Amy Grade School and graduated with the Class of 1959 at Dighton High School. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Colorado Women’s College in Denver in 1963. She and her husband farmed in Lane County before moving to Medford, Oregon in 2014. She was a member of the Dighton United Methodist Church and PEO Chapter GF of Dighton.

She is survived by her Husband- Larry Neeley, Son- Stephen B. Neeley (Lisa) of Dighton, Daughter- Michelle M. Eaton (Mark) of Medford, Oregon, Sister- Phyllis Burnett of Anaheim, California and 5 Grandchildren- Max Neeley, Mary Maxwell, Eric Maxwell, Thomas Eaton &amp; Nicholas Eaton.

Maria D. Lopez, 58, died Tuesday February 6, 2024 at her home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born May 22, 1965 in Monterrey Mexico, the daughter of Higinio and Amelia (Terrazas) Oviedo. She married Gerardo Lopez on April 26, 1986 in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico. He survives.

Maria attended and graduated from schools in Monterrey Mexico. She and her husband moved to Kansas in 1996. Together they raised two children and had the honor of welcoming four grandchildren into the Lopez Oviedo lineage. She was a hard worker and had been employed at Wal-Mart as a stocker for the last 5 years. Her hobbies included exercising, dancing, and spending quality time with her family. She will be remembered for the unconditional deep love she had for her family and ability and willingness to help anyone in need.

He was born July 6, 1958 in Jackson, MO to Benny L. Wade and Mary M. Mitchell.

Weston “Wes” Jay Essmiller, 44, passed away February 2, 2024, in Clermont, FL. He was born on October 10, 1979, in Great Bend, KS to Jay and Lesli (Bobbitt) Essmiller. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1998, survived a bout with cancer in 1999-2000, and graduated from Kansas State University in 2005 with a BS in Agriculture, Horticulture/Landscape Design. He married Lisa Dionne Pryor on June 9, 2007, in Manhattan, KS.

Wes, a resident of Clermont, FL coming from Manhattan, Topeka, and Great Bend, KS was a landscape designer specializing in groundwater management and golf course irrigation supplies. &nbsp;Most recently he had worked as a sales manager for Netafim, USA and NDS, Inc., and had previously served as the executive director for Groundwater Management District #5. &nbsp;Wes was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity (KSU), Ducks Unlimited, and past chairman of Central Kansas Catbackers. &nbsp;He enjoyed hunting, playing golf and all-things K-State. &nbsp;

Joan Helen (Ambrose) Ziegler, 86, of Colby, KS, died Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby. She was born May 26, 1937, in Grand Island, NE. She loved telling the story of being her parents’ only child born in a hospital. Joan was born to Joseph William and Anna (Marfica) Ambrose. She lived on a farm until 1938, then moved to St. Paul, NE after her father’s death. Her mother married Louie Sintek when she was five years old, and they returned to the farm.

Joan graduated from Farwell High School. She played volleyball and boasted that she had been on a state championship team. She attended Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, MN, where she earned diplomas in Clinical Laboratory, X-Ray and Electrocardiographic techniques in September of 1957. Following graduation, she moved to Colby and was employed at St. Thomas Hospital.

On May 9, 1959, she married Leonard “Leroy” Ziegler in Farwell, NE. The couple was blessed with five children: Margo, Marla, Marc, Marsha and Marlyn. They are all in agreement that her fried chicken with creamy mashed potatoes was their favorite meal.It was instilled in her as a young girl the drive to always work hard and take pride in all that she did. This showed in her beautiful home and immaculate yard. She used many unique methods to ensure her flower gardens bloomed throughout the summer and fall. Her efforts didn’t just include the front and back yards, but the alley, too. Her portion of the alley was as beautiful as the other areas surrounding her home.

Joan was a devout catholic attending Sacred Heart Church. Most of her adult life she attended daily Holy Mass. She was the first woman to be a Eucharistic Minister in Colby. She took Communion to the homebound after Sunday Mass. On Friday mornings she went to senior living centers, ministered, and gave Communion. She enjoyed memberships within the parish including the Daughters of Isabella and Queen Mary Circle.In 2018, she was honored to accept the Colby Working Woman of the Year Award. She was interviewed by KWCH television out of Wichita and enjoyed the time of being a local celebrity. Joan was also a member of the Colby VFW Auxiliary, Epsilon Chi Sorority, RSVP, and served on the board of the Regional Prevention Center.

Joan was preceded in death by beloved husband, Leroy Ziegler; her parents; sister Katherine Lacy; brothers Donald and Archie Ambrose; brothers-in-law Donald Lacy, Harvey Meyer, Donald Ziegler, and Aloysius Huelsman; and sisters-in-law Marlene Ambrose and Irene Huelsman.

She is survived by her five children, Margo (Brady) Baker, Weston, MO, Marla (Willard) Crumrine, Brewster, KS, Marc (Casy) Ziegler, Bennington, KS, Marsha Ziegler, Wichita, KS and Marlyn (Laurie) Ziegler, Lawrence, KS; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; sister Irene Meyer; sister-in-law Betty Ambrose; special friend Marj Robben; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation is 4-6:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby.  </figure>Joan Helen (Ambrose) Ziegler, 86, of Colby, KS, died Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby. She was born May 26, 1937, in Grand Island, NE. She loved telling the story of being her parents’ only child born in a hospital. Joan was born to Joseph William and Anna (Marfica) Ambrose. She lived on a farm until 1938, then moved to St. Paul, NE after her father’s death. Her mother married Louie Sintek when she was five years old, and they returned to the farm.Joan graduated from Farwell High School. She played volleyball and boasted that she had been on a state championship team. She attended Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, MN, where she earned diplomas in Clinical Laboratory, X-Ray and Electrocardiographic techniques in September of 1957. Anastasia “Daisy” Fellhoelter, 93, of Menlo, died Tuesday, February 6, 2024. She was born in Gove County, KS, on January 8, 1931, to Michael and Marianne (Kuntz) Heier. On September 22, 1953, she was united in marriage with Boniface Fellhoelter and to this union six children were born. Daisy was a member of the St. Ann Altar Society and St. Paul Catholic Church, in Angelus and was a lifetime member of the Grinnell VFW Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Boniface; son Leon; sisters, Julia, Agnes and Lorena and brothers, Pius, William and Linus.

She is survived by her children, Charles (Penny) Fellhoelter, Marilyn (Dreux) Schwaiger, Patricia (Leon) Heinen, Stephen (Laura) Fellhoelter and Linda (Kurt) Spachek; daughter-in-law LeeAnn Fellhoelter; sister Delores (LeRoy) Katt; sister-in-law Jean Heier; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Shirley F. Finnesy, of Plainville, KS, passed away on February 5, 2024, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville. She was born on March 4, 1935, to Herman B. and Carrion A. (Clements) Mason in Hays, KS. She married Richard Duane Finnesy on July 31, 1953, in Plainville. They were blessed with two children: Tom and Dee.

Shirley was a lifelong resident of Plainville and graduated from Plainville High School in 1953. She worked at USD 270 as a cook, then the Plainville City Office as the Clerk’s Assistant, and then for Finnesy Grain &amp; R.D. Finnesy Oil as a bookkeeper. She also helped on the farm and was a great farm wife. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Plainville.

Shirley was a seamstress and made many clothes for her kids. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed painting, getting outdoors, gardening at the farm, fishing in her younger years, football games, and Facebook. She loved spending time with Richard. They were always together and for each other during their celebrated 70 years of marriage. Shirley also loved spending time with her 21 grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Tom Finnesy and Dee (Bill) Mills, both of Plainville; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Preceding Shirley in death are her parents; husband, Richard; brothers, Dale Mason, Bill Mason, Norman Mason, and Roscoe Mason; and sister, Betty VanSchuyver.

Shirley worked hard but joyfully. As a loving, caring mother, her family was second only to God; and although she has now gone home to be with her Lord, the legacy of her love, laughter, and joy will live in our hearts and memories forever. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be forgotten.

A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 2PM at the Plainville Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, 2-4PM with the family receiving friends 2-3PM at the funeral home in Plainville.

Shirley F. Finnesy

Billie D. Cochran, 90, of Norton, KS passed away February 5, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born June 9, 1933 in Smith Center, KS to Caleb Leroy and Nora Matilda (Carter) Cochran.

Billie grew up in Smith Center, KS where he met his lifetime companion, Frances Jones. He graduated from Smith Center High School in 1951. Billie and Frances married on August 30, 1953.

Billie joined the United States Navy in 1951 serving 19 years active duty and 10 years with the reserves. He served 7 years overseas, with deployment during the Korean War on the USS Chevalier receiving promotions up to SK1 and was transferred to the USS Ranger in 1957. After requesting stateside, onshore duty, Billie was transferred to the Nuclear Weapons School, Sandia Base, in Albuquerque, NM and was later deployed to the East Coast and the Dominican Republic. He transferred to the instructor’s school in Newport, Rhode Island and then the NROTC unit at the University of Notre Dame where he became the Assistant Instructor of Naval Science and served as Supply Chief for four years. Billie retired after completing his final assignment to the USS San Diego.

Billie’s search for a new career led him and his family to Norton, KS. He later began a career as a mail carrier until he retired at the age of 62. Billie was an active member of the First Church of God, the Odd Fellows, Lions Club, and Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post 63. Billie was truly honored to be a selected Odd Fellows member for a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a Kansas Honor Flight recipient. Billie was a life-long avid fan of Smith Center Football. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking but most of the time he could be found enjoying a cup of coffee with his friends at Town and Country. Billie loved his family and cared for them deeply and loved to help people in need, many would say he was “generous to a fault”.

Billie is survived by his children: Joyce Romero of Washington State, Mari (Pangie) Martinez of Dodge City, KS; 12 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years, Frances; daughter, Connie Dale; son, William “Butch” Cochran; granddaughter, Emily Streit; brothers: Keith, Caleb and Dick Cochran; sisters: Gladys Pletcher, Dorothy Chase and Jean Bruno.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the First Church of God, Norton, KS. Burial with military honors will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Kathryn Sue Murray, 66, passed away February 7, 2024 at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

She was born June 29, 1957 in Fort Polk, Louisiana, the daughter of Virgil A. Murray and Setsu Segawa Rodriguez.

Aside from living &nbsp;ten years in California, and seven years in Oregon, she was a lifetime Larned resident. &nbsp;She was graduate of Larned High School and worked at Larned State Hospital as a MHDD Tech. She was an amazing artist and liked to paint and draw. She loved cats, horses, taking care of animals, and feeding her birds and squirrels.

Survivors include: sister, Pam Murray-Perez, Great Bend; three brothers, Michael Murray, Havasu, Arizona, David Murray, Andy Murray, both of California; uncle, Dan Murray, Great Bend; nephew, Jared Surdam, Washington; niece, Mackenzie Perez, Great Bend; and two cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Sharon Kay Steele, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas. She was born to Everett and Mildred Marine Gaul on September 15, 1939, in Dodge City, Kansas. She was a member of the Tribune community since 1963 having moved from the Dodge City area. She was a Tribune United Methodist Church member and an Honorary Life Member of the Greeley County Historical Society where she has served on the board and as a treasurer for many years.&nbsp;

On June 5, 1960, Sharon married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Max Steele in Ford, Kansas. He survives.

Sharon is survived by her husband, son - Scott &amp; Christine Steele of Tribune, Kansas, daughter - Stacia &amp; Jobie Langston of Sun City Center, Florida, one brother - Harold Gaul of Grand Junction, Colorado, three sisters - Donna Hensley of Ford, Kansas, Pat &amp; Bob Dome of Cheney, Kansas, Lois &amp; Leland Crego of Wellington, Colorado, eleven grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Sharon is preceded in death by her parents, one sister- Betty Day, and three brothers - Gene, Vernon, and Sonny.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2024, at the Tribune United Methodist Church in Tribune, Kansas with Pastors Jerri Smith and Justin Sherer presiding.

Mark Francis Boos, of Ellis, Kansas, age 78, passed away February 6, 2024 at Hays Medical Center.&nbsp; He was born March 27, 1945 in Hays, Kansas to Paul P. &amp; Irene (Leiker) Boos.&nbsp; He married Diane M. Wishnuck on July 20, 1963, in Ellis, Kansas.

Mark graduated from Ellis High School in 1963.&nbsp; He then worked as a mechanic in Hays &amp; Ellis and then operated a bulldozer for Ellis County Hwy Department.&nbsp; After an injury, he continued his education to become a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in 1976.&nbsp; He worked at Hays Pathology Lab for 26 years and achieved department head status.&nbsp; Due to four major back surgeries, he sadly had to discontinue his career.

One of the biggest loves in his life was playing guitar and singing &amp; remarkably he played “by ear”. Over the years, he performed in Kay’s Combo, Johnny &amp; The Rebels, Angie’s Polka Band, Younger Band, Heronemes Plus One, and lastly Flatland Band where he excelled as a country lead guitarist and singer.&nbsp; He was always so proud when his little 5 y/o son, Lee, joined him on stage tearing it up on the drums to the song, Wipe Out!&nbsp; 

He was admired by many for his amazing ability to sound like Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Ricky Nelson, Conway Twitty, George Jones and many more. He loved to country dance with Diane. There was always music in the home.&nbsp; Mark was also known for being able to fix anything!&nbsp; Being a farmboy, he took his family on Sunday afternoon drives sharing his love for the country which also inspired their love for windmills, country roads and scenery. Mark was proud to watch his children when they were young at all of their basketball, football, golf, baseball events, and free-throw contests and he spent many hours driving to all these events.&nbsp; His grandchildren have so many memories when they were little of grandpa playing endless hours of electric trains, Playstation, computer games, teaching guitar and much more! Betty Ann Driscoll, 77, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, January 12, 2024, at her home in Russell.

Betty was born on April 30, 1946, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Elton A. and Winifred E. (Benton) Teppe. She grew up in the Russell and Dorrance, Kansas, areas and graduated from Dorrance High School. After high school she graduated from Brown Mackie Business College in Salina, Kansas. She was formerly married to Jack Driscoll and from this union they had a daughter Annette. She was a former employee of the Russell City Policy office and worked as a dispatcher.

Surviving family is her daughter Annette Driscoll, brother Butch Teppe and ex-husband Jack Driscoll.

A private family service will be held at a later date and cremation has been selected by the family. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie Lorene Stewart Pember. &nbsp;He married Kim Wendler on October 11, 1970, in Dodge City, Kansas.

He was a Floor Covering Contractor for over 40 years.&nbsp; Dennis loved his family, friends, and nature – especially his retirement years with his granddaughters.&nbsp; He had a great sense of humor, cared deeply about life, and our planet.&nbsp; He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

Rex Wise passed away peacefully at Redbud Village in Plainville, KS on February 4, 2024, at the age of 74. He was born on July 24, 1949, to Norman and Ietta Mae (Hrabe) Wise in Hays, Kansas.

Rex grew up in Plainville. As his little brother Fred recalls the story his mom told him, Rex was in grade school when mom was driving him to school one day. They had just turned off the highway towards the school when Rex yelled to stop, which she did. Rex bailed out of the car and ran toward a group of boys who were older and bigger than him. Apparently, they were picking on/punching a boy that was half their size and obviously weaker. Rex jumped right in the middle of them and went after the biggest guy who was the main antagonizer. It wasn’t long before the other boys decided they didn’t want any of what he had to offer and ran off leaving the bully. As soon as there was an opportunity, the big guy tucked tail and ran as well. Rex walked the kid to school so no one would bother him. From what mom said he watched over the younger boy after that, and the bullies left him alone. He was just that kind of guy, always caring for others. Rex was the Center on the Plainville High School Football Team and was the only Junior named to First Team of Mid-Continent League Football All Star Team as voted by his coaches of the league in 1965. He enjoyed football, motorcycles, and his family. At the age of 16 he was injured in a pickup truck/motorcycle accident which injured his brain and affected his left side. While in and out of Hadley Hospital, he was cared for by his parents in their Plainville home from 1966 until 1996. In the early 70’s volunteers from the community would come in to help Rex with Patterning therapy. Always wanting to help Rex, in 1978 his dad and mom took him to the Department of Neurologic Surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, NY to receive Deep Brain Stimulator/Transmitter which controlled his tremors. Rex lived in a Head Injury Group Home in Russell that Bob Dole had supported while in the U.S. Senate. Later, he was a client at DSNWK and then LINK both in Hays. But in 2000 he came home to Plainville, at Redbud Village. He loved it there where the caring staff was extended family, so much that he stayed for 24 years.

Survivors include his siblings, Joan (Jeff) McIntyre of Florence, AZ, Lonnie (Kathy) Wise of Russell, KS, Vickie (Jack) Ashbaugh of Hill City, KS, Pat (Alvin) Mills-Harbert of Warr Acres, OK and Fred (Val) Wise of Cheney, KS. Nieces and nephews John (Shauna) McIntyre, David McIntyre, Lanelle (Steve) Baily, Carey Wise, Stephanie Beran, Todd Ashbaugh, Brad (Tawny) Ashbaugh, Michelle (Terry) Dohrwardt, Kimberly Mills, Rachael (Chris) Williams, Andrew (Kelsea) Mills and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Ietta Wise, Grandparents Fred and Amy Wise, James and Goldie Hrabe of Plainville. Aunts, Wilma Reed, Daisy Stagner, Creta Hilgers and Agnes Hrabe. Rex Lee Wise

Kenneth “Kenny” Frank Branda, of rural Wilson, passed away on February 1, 2024, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, at the age of 80. He was born on October 19, 1943, to Bohumil “Shorty” and Edith (Mahoney) Branda in Ellsworth, Kansas.

Kenny graduated from Wilson High School in 1961 and went on to attend Fort Hays State University. He chose a ski trip over his finals, which ended his higher education. He married Amy (Hoch) in front of a few close friends and family on June 3, 2005, in rural Wilson.

Kenny farmed was involved with farming his whole life, which began with his father. He started plumbing in 1963 before starting Kennys Construction, Inc in 1972. Kenny was in the construction business for 52 years. Kenny played in the dirt every opportunity he had, whether it was moving and setting up drilling rigs, digging basements, or building roads and terraces. He was a perfectionist in his work and didn’t quit until the work was just right. Kenny would also move snow in the winter from the high school parking lot, clear streets and driveways for those who he knew needed to go to doctors’ appointments, etc.

God did not give Kenny patience. He would paint something and have it assembled before the paint even dried. Which resulted in getting paint all over his hands and clothes. Before he was old enough to have a license, he rode his bike to town and traded it for his first car. Later in life Kenny and Amy purchased two jet skis. Kenny had to try them out on the pond before he could get them on the lake. He and the jet ski both ended up on the shore.

Kenny was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus (Former Grand Knight), Wilson High School Alumni Association (Coordinator), Sons of the American Legion, Former City Council Member, and Former Wilson Fire Department Chief.

Kenny is survived by his wife, Amy of rural Wilson; daughters, Joan Branda of Trenton, TX, Sharon (Mike) McConnell of South Haven, KS; bonus son, Martin (Courtney) Swart of Canton, KS; five grandchildren, Kristin (Josh) Weger, Jessica (Cody) Douglas, Kaitlin (Roger) Graham, Breanna (Seth) Stroman, James McConnell and his two bonus grandchildren, Kensington and Oliver Swart and ten great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the funeral home in Wilson. Visitation will be on Friday, 6:00-8:00 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Scattering will take place at a later time in Rural Wilson.

He was born on October 19, 1943, to Bohumil “Shorty” and Edith (Mahoney) Branda in Ellsworth, Kansas.Kenny graduated from Wilson High School in 1961 and went on to attend Fort Hays State University. He chose a ski trip over his finals, which ended his higher education. He married Amy (Hoch) in front of a few close friends and family on June 3, 2005, in rural Wilson.Kenny farmed was involved with farming his whole life, which began with his father. He started plumbing in 1963 before starting Kennys Construction, Inc in 1972. Kenny was in the construction business for 52 years. Kenny played in the dirt every opportunity he had, whether it was moving and setting up drilling rigs, digging basements, or building roads and terraces. He was a perfectionist in his work and didn’t quit until the work was just right. Kenny would also move snow in the winter from the high school parking lot, clear streets and driveways for those who he knew needed to go to doctors’ appointments, etc.God did not give Kenny patience. He would paint something and have it assembled before the paint even dried. Which resulted in getting paint all over his hands and clothes. Before he was old enough to have a license, he rode his bike to town and traded it for his first car. Later in life Kenny and Amy purchased two jet skis. Kenny had to try them out on the pond before he could get them on the lake. He and the jet ski both ended up on the shore.Kenny was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus (Former Grand Knight), Wilson High School Alumni Association (Coordinator), Sons of the American Legion, Former City Council Member, and Former Wilson Fire Department Chief.Kenny is survived by his wife, Amy of rural Wilson; daughters, Joan Branda of Trenton, TX, Sharon (Mike) McConnell of South Haven, KS; bonus son, Martin (Courtney) Swart of Canton, KS; five grandchildren, Kristin (Josh) Weger, Jessica (Cody) Douglas, Kaitlin (Roger) Graham, Breanna (Seth) Stroman, James McConnell and his two bonus grandchildren, Kensington and Oliver Swart and ten great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents.A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the funeral home in Wilson. Visitation will be on Friday, 6:00-8:00 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Kenneth “Kenny” Frank Branda

Genette Elaine (Nelson) Keas, of Plainville, KS, passed away on February 3, 2024, at the Rooks County Health Center after a brief illness, at the age of 92. She was born on May 29, 1931, the third daughter of Merle and Ethel (Lamb) Nelson in Codell, Kansas.

Genette grew up in the Codell community where she worked in her family’s grocery store, pumped gas for customers, and roller skated many miles up and down the sidewalk. She was a good student and graduated from Codell High School in 1949. She never lost her love of reading and always encouraged her family to read with frequent trips to the library. Genette married Glenn “Buck” Keas on September 14, 1949. They settled on a farm in the Twin Mounds area of Rooks County and raised their four children there.

Genette was an active member of the community and enjoyed participating in various clubs and organizations, including the Stitch and Chatter Club, EHU, and Farm Bureau. She served as a 4-H leader and taught Sunday School for many years. She was part of the same quilting group at Codell Baptist Church where her mother and grandmother had quilted. In later years, Genette was a member of First Christian Church of Plainville where she volunteered in many capacities. Genette baked countless cookies, cakes, pies, and kolaches as well as other treats. She once baked her way through an entire cookbook of bread recipes, much to her family’s approval. She brought home many Grand Champion awards from the Rooks County Fair where she volunteered for over forty years. In 2018 Genette was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Auxiliary of Rooks County Health Center. Throughout her life Genette enjoyed playing cards and games. She worked crossword puzzles for many years and had a dog-eared crossword dictionary to prove it. Genette moved to assisted living in 2018 but that did not stop her participation in church activities or her knitting group. She continued to be helpful to those living around her.

Genette was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Glenn Keas; sisters Geraldine Davenport, Genevieve Zeigler, and Gwendolyn Nelson; an infant brother; and son-in-law, Byron Beal.

She is survived by her children Margena Worley (Allen) of Chesterfield, VA, Dena Pederson (Gary) of McPherson, KS, Douglas Keas (Stacey) of Plainville, KS, and Matthew Keas (Pat) of Plainville, KS; sisters-in-law, Karen Preston and Gena Lee Keas; 13 treasured grandchildren: Jessica and Jason Knowles, Josh and Kate Beal, Rachel and Richard Bowles, Katie and Jason Snook, Aaron and Alisha Worley, Kara and Joe Bush, Shanna and Neil Stewart, Katie and Luke Beeler, Seth and Catherine Keas, Jared Keas, Amy and Jesse Arbogast, Nikki and Jonathan Berkley, and Dustin and Ashley Keas; 33 great-grandchildren whom she welcomed each with an afghan she had crocheted; and many nieces and nephews.

Genette lived a good life surrounded by people who loved her.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 10:30AM at the First Christian Church in Plainville. Visitation will be Thursday, 2-7PM with the family receiving friends 4-6PM at the funeral home in Plainville.

Dena Stoll was born Elizabeth Darlene Cox in Leach, OK on October 9, 1948. Dena worked in many fields throughout her life. Her occupations included everything from waitress to security guard to business owner to over-the-road truck driver to hotel operator. She lived in many places from Texas to Oklahoma to California and traveled to many more. She eventually settled in Oakley to concentrate on her favorite jobs; being a mom, grandma, and gigi. Dena’s mammoth personality, paired with her enormous heart and devastating wit, made at least an impression on everyone she met. For others, she became family; Corina preceded her in death but called her “Mom” until the day she passed. So did Tiffany, Jennifer, Mindy, and many more.

Dena passed away following a pitched battle with Parkinson’s Disease on February 4, 2024, at the Logan County Manor in Oakley, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, Realis and Ruby (Cox) Merrell, and an infant son, Brian Williamson. She is survived by her husband, Gary Stoll, her four children, Bob and Trish (Parker) Williamson, Laura (Williamson) and Jason Crick, Tiffany (Byers) and Jason Mader, and Tim and Jillian (Hahn) Byers, her stepdaughters Jennifer Stoll and Kylie Stoll, fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

"Dena" Elizabeth Darlene Stoll (Merrell)

Edward Thelsten Kocher, 89, quietly passed away at the Good Samaritan, in Atwood, KS on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

Ed grew up on his parents’ farm south of Concordia, KS. He attended Cottonwood Rural and in 1952, graduated from Concordia High School. Edward loved sports, he played both football and baseball throughout high school.

Ed then attended Kansas State University. He graduated with a dual major in Agriculture and Journalism. Edward was a life-long fan of K-State and was very proud to be an Alumni. While at school in Manhattan, KS, he met Donna Jane Brown, of Atwood, KS. They were married on June 15, 1957. Following college, Ed and Donna moved to North Carolina for two years, where Ed served in the 82nd Airborne stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC. While in the Army he made dozens of jumps as a paratrooper!

Ed and Donna then moved to Omaha, NE, where he took a position at the Stockman Journal as their advertising manager. Ed and Donna had both of their children while living in Omaha.

From there, Ed moved the family to Leawood, KS. Ed spent his working hours as the sales manager at BSnB building corp, and ad manger at Big Farmer Magazine. He also formed his own steel building company, K-Steel.Following the death of his father, Ed and his family re-located to Concordia, KS, where he took over the family farm, while marketing his K-Steel products.

In addition to farming, Ed operated a custom harvesting operation. He traveled extensively in business throughout his career and found common interest with almost everyone he met. In the early 1990’s Ed and Donna moved to Atwood, KS to be nearer to family. While in Atwood, Ed enjoyed gardening, was committed to work, and loved to share his stories. (Whether it be his wife of 66 years, his children, or grandchildren, he was happy to show how proud he was of the people he cared for.Ed and Donna bought a little acreage west of Atwood at Blakeman, their “Hobby Farm”. Ed started “Blakeman Gardens”. He grew tomatoes, melons, and anything else that Donna liked. He worked full time until he suffered a fall in 2021 at The Atwood Corner filling station and enjoyed selling vegetables at the local Farmers Market.

Edward was never short of words and was a friend to nearly every person he met. His love for his family and friends was shown in countless ways, he was a steady, unwavering man, who was fiercely loyal and firm in his convictions. He loved spending time in his garden, talking to genuine people and loved his family with all his heart.

Edward is survived by his wife, Donna Kocher; his grandson Cody Wayne Kocher, his wife Emily and son Colt James; and grandson Damien Paul Kocher, his wife Jade and son Finn Edward.Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Adeline Kocher, of Concordia, KS; his son Kenneth (Russ) Kocher and his daughter, Kara Jane Coates.A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 12, 2024, at Fairview Cemetery, Atwood, KS. Survivors include his sons, Bryce of Newbern, NC &amp; Shaun of Concordia; his daughters, Sarah, Sheena &amp; Brelyn “Nin” Pfeil all of Phillipsburg; 2 brothers, Curtis &amp; Russ of Alma; his sister, Judy Williamson of Alma &amp; 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 9 at 10:30 a.m. in the Huck Boyd Community Center with Pastor Dave Hutson officiating. &nbsp;The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. &nbsp;

A graveside service will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Alma Cemetery, Alma, NE.

Dave Pfeil

Lindsay Homeier, a radiant soul whose life was a symphony of love, laughter, and dance, left our world too soon, but her spirit and legacy continue to inspire and uplift all who knew her. Born on May 14, 1988, in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;Lindsay was the cherished daughter of Jim and Jaci Feil. From the very beginning, she captivated her father Jim’s heart, forging a bond of love and mutual admiration that was truly special. Lindsay’s love for dance was evident at the age of 3.&nbsp; She would leap throughout the house and in the yard.&nbsp; We were always afraid she was going to hurt herself or break something.&nbsp; Her love of dance led us to enroll her in dance classes which she absolutely loved going to.&nbsp; As she entered middle school, she wanted to enroll in Jackie Creamer’s dance studio in Hays, so she could try out for the competition team, which she made.&nbsp; This love continued throughout high school as she was a member of the RHS dance team for all four years.

Lindsay’s love of dance was not only her passion, but the very essence of who she was.&nbsp; She touched many lives and created a beautiful dance family, who she loved dearly. After graduating from Russell High School in the Class of 2006, she honed her craft at the University of Kansas, where she earned a degree in Political Science with a Minor in Dance. &nbsp;&nbsp;While at KU, she took multiple dance classes in a variety of genres.&nbsp; She wanted to learn everything she could so she could teach others.&nbsp; Realizing her dream led her to becoming the owner and operator of her own dance studio, Euphoria Dance Centre in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; Her love story with Bobby Homeier, whom she married on June 20, 2015, was a beautiful testament to partnership and shared dreams. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the playful antics of their beloved pets, Missi and Phoebie.

Throughout her life, Lindsay was a beacon of joy and inspiration, especially through her dance program and mentorship, where she empowered countless children to express themselves and embrace the transformative power of dance. Her infectious enthusiasm and genuine warmth turned every encounter into a memorable experience, enriching the lives of all who crossed her path. As we reflect on Lindsay’s journey, we are comforted by the image of her in heaven, joyfully preparing her song list, choreography dances with the angels, basking in the peace and love of our Lord.

To honor Lindsay’s lifelong commitment to dance and her desire to make it accessible to all, the Lindsay Homeier Legacy Dance Scholarship has been established. This scholarship is a tribute to Lindsay’s belief in the power of dance to illuminate the brightest parts of our souls, just as she did every day with her indomitable spirit and radiant smile. It is our hope that through the Lindsay Homeier Legacy Dance Scholarship, we can continue to support and nurture young dancers, helping their talents to flourish and their inner light to shine as brightly as Lindsay’s. In this way, we keep her passion alive, ensuring that her legacy of love, joy, and the transformative power of dance endures, touching the lives of future generations.

Lindsay’s love for dance was evident at the age of 3.&nbsp; She would leap throughout the house and in the yard.&nbsp; We were always afraid she was going to hurt herself or break something.&nbsp; Her love of dance led us to enroll her in dance classes which she absolutely loved going to.&nbsp; As she entered middle school, she wanted to enroll in Jackie Creamer’s dance studio in Hays, so she could try out for the competition team, which she made.&nbsp; This love continued throughout high school as she was a member of the RHS dance team for all four years.Lindsay’s love of dance was not only her passion, but the very essence of who she was.&nbsp; She touched many lives and created a beautiful dance family, who she loved dearly. After graduating from Russell High School in the Class of 2006, she honed her craft at the University of Kansas, where she earned a degree in Political Science with a Minor in Dance. &nbsp;&nbsp;While at KU, she took multiple dance classes in a variety of genres.&nbsp; She wanted to learn everything she could so she could teach others.&nbsp; Realizing her dream led her to becoming the owner and operator of her own dance studio, Euphoria Dance Centre in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; Her love story with Bobby Homeier, whom she married on June 20, 2015, was a beautiful testament to partnership and shared dreams. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the playful antics of their beloved pets, Missi and Phoebie.Throughout her life, Lindsay was a beacon of joy and inspiration, especially through her dance program and mentorship, where she empowered countless children to express themselves and embrace the transformative power of dance. Her infectious enthusiasm and genuine warmth turned every encounter into a memorable experience, enriching the lives of all who crossed her path. As we reflect on Lindsay’s journey, we are comforted by the image of her in heaven, joyfully preparing her song list, choreography dances with the angels, basking in the peace and love of our Lord.To honor Lindsay’s lifelong commitment to dance and her desire to make it accessible to all, the Lindsay Homeier Legacy Dance Scholarship has been established. This scholarship is a tribute to Lindsay’s belief in the power of dance to illuminate the brightest parts of our souls, just as she did every day with her indomitable spirit and radiant smile. It is our hope that through the Lindsay Homeier Legacy Dance Scholarship, we can continue to support and nurture young dancers, helping their talents to flourish and their inner light to shine as brightly as Lindsay’s. In this way, we keep her passion alive, ensuring that her legacy of love, joy, and the transformative power of dance endures, touching the lives of future generations.Lindsay is lovingly remembered by her husband Bobby Homeier, her mother Jaci Feil, her brother Ryan Feil, his wife Erica, and her nephews Bryson and Lawson and niece Jayde, her grandmother Velma Beeman and her cousins Jessica Dumler, Chris Feil and Kellin Feil.&nbsp; She also leaves behind a cherished circle of nieces and nephews—Taelyr Blehm, Jayden Braun, Riley Braun, Lilly Braun, Neveah Buffington, Tavia Buffington, Skylard Buffington, Natalia Buffington, Hazel Henderleiter, Phoebe Henderlieter, Porter Henderleiter, and Cameron Henderleiter—who will forever hold dear the joy and lessons she shared with them.Rest in peace, Lindsay. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:11 AM, Thursday, February 8, 2024 at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, a Memorial has been established as the Lindsay Homeier Legacy Dance Scholarship.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these services.

Sammy Dean “Sam” Patterson, 81, Hays, died Monday, February 5, 2024 at HaysMed.

 </figure>Sammy Dean “Sam” Patterson, 81, Hays, died Monday, February 5, 2024 at HaysMed.He was born July 22, 1942 in Texas County, Missouri, the son of Leslie and Verna (Farris) Patterson.&nbsp; Sam married Rosalie Klaus in June 1981 in Midland, Texas, and they celebrated 42 years of marriage.&nbsp; He enjoyed his truck driving career, restoring vehicles, and going to car shows.&nbsp; Most of all, he loved his family and his dog, Buddy.Survivors include his wife Rosalie of Hays, his son, Timmy Patterson of Texas, a step-daughter, Karen Simpson and husband Tom of Arizona, four step-sons, Bruce Befort and wife Janel of Texas, Rod Befort and wife Kathy of Garden City, Clayton Befort and wife Sharon of Hays, and Rex Befort and wife Karen of Wichita, 11 grandchildren, Chad, Cole, Cory, Becky, Tammy, Clinton, Austin, Shellie, Andy, Mitch, and Cory, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, four sisters, and a nephew.The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm until 5:00 on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; Condolences and memories of Sam may be shared with his family at www.haysmemorial.com
