Joy Forster Crawford Birdwell, 93, of Natoma, Kansas, went to her heavenly home, May 28, 2023. She grew up the youngest of 11 children born to Ray and Livona Dudley Forster, August 27, 1929 in Cawker City, Kansas. 

When Joy was a young child during the Dirty '30s, she was overcome with dust pneumonia and by God’s grace recovered. 

During this time the family moved to Kirwin and she attended school in Glen Elder until her sophomore year when her father went to work in the Navy Yard during WWII at Port Orchard, Washington. It was here that Joy met her future husband. She came back to Kansas during her junior year of high school.

Joy gave her heart to Jesus at nine years of age at a Christian Church and went forward for salvation to the hymn, “Just As I Am”. That hymn remained a favorite for the rest of her life. 

She graduated from high school in Glen Elder, and went on to get her teaching certificate and taught grades 1-8 in a country school seven miles north of Gorham, for one year. She taught grades 4-6 in Ionia the next year. Then the guy she met in Washington, George Crawford, became her husband.

The couple moved to Natoma in 1957. To this union were born five children. After George died in an oil field accident in 1987, Joy met and married Bob Birdwell, September 9, 1989. They were married 33 years. They loved Colorado and built a cabin in Red Feather Lakes, where they lived for 24 years. Their home was the vacation spot for most of the family.

Grandma Joy always had a spirit of ADVENTURE, loved to travel, and taught the “Grands” how to enJOY life. We played many games of rummy, dominoes, Mexican Train, and Rook. Probably the most important lesson she taught during those games was how to lose!

She had a quick sense for words and was a whiz with crossword puzzles. She was clever and enjoyed a good poem, rhyme, or limerick. She always had a love of books, especially the Bible, and would read it through every year.

Grandma Joy loved cooking for her family and always made her trademark homemade ice cream ready and waiting to be enjoyed. She taught us how to fish and shared her love of hiking, picnics, and nature. On her 70th birthday she became the proud owner of her first ATV. She was so pleased when the family came to ride the trails with her in the Rockies.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband George Crawford; all 10 Forster family siblings: George, Carmen, Gertie, Mildred, Dudley, Irene, Dot, Betty, Jim, and Margie; and a grandson Justin Crawford. 

She is survived by her husband Robert Birdwell of Natoma; children: Steve Crawford of West Virginia, Julie Fulks and husband Steve of Natoma, Greg Crawford of Zurich, Jeff Crawford and wife Linda of Natoma, Karla Crawford of Natoma; Steve Birdwell of San Bruno, California, Shara&nbsp;Birdwell Brinkley of Phoenix, Arizona, Sandy Birdwell Kersting and husband Dave of Papillion, Nebraska, and Bob Birdwell and wife Karen of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Together Bob and Joy have nine children, 22 grandchildren and 32 and counting great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and counting.

Joyce 'Joy' Beth Birdwell

John Joseph Landauer, Jr., age 92, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis.

John was born February 12, 1931, on the family farm to Frank and Zelma (Brown) Landauer. He married Wilma Kleweno and they later divorced. They had two sons, Barry and John “Bo”.

John graduated from Ellis High School in 1949 and joined the United States Navy after graduation. After he was discharged, he returned home to help with the family farm and raise cattle. John then made his way to Independence, Missouri working for Sears where he was a store manager for 25 years. After his retirement from Sears, he returned to Ellis and continued his work on the family farm.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and a life member of the Hays VFW. He enjoyed hunting, socializing, and playing cards at the Ellis Golf Club.

John is survived by one brother, Roger Landauer and wife Pat of Salina, KS; two sisters, Adeline Henderson of Ellis and Carol Evans of Garland, TX; two grandchildren, Rachel Landauer of Merriam, KS and Ryan Landauer of Omaha, NE; as well as four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded by his parents, Frank and Zelma; two sons, Barry Landauer and John “Bo” Landauer; two brothers, Gilbert and Milfred; and an infant sister, Linda Landauer.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. with a combined vigil and rosary service at 7 p.m., all at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Friday visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time at the church as well.

Robert Edward Tamney

Robert P. Ebersole, 92, Leawood, Kansas died May 31, 2023.

Bob was born December 17, 1930, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Paul and Mildred Ebersole and grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa, through his elementary school and high school years. He attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a business degree in 1953 and a law degree, Juris Doctor, in 1957. A year later he completed an M.B.A degree at Northwestern University in Chicago. He was admitted to the practice of law in both Kansas and Iowa.

Between the two Iowa degrees, Bob served as a U.S. Air Force Personnel and Administrative Officer. He was a major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Judge Advocate Division.

After this time he started his family with then-wife, Marilyn Mermis. They had three children, Amy, Andrew, and Alec.

His career in law, banking, and insurance began as a cashier at the First National Bank in Hays, Kansas, in 1960. He became president and CEO of that bank in 1964. During his career there, the First National became one of the prominent banks in western Kansas by leading the area in data-processing conversion. Bob also developed a six-story bank building with rental offices and a private dining club.

While in Hays, Bob was an active member of the Kansas Bankers Association and chaired various KBA committees. He was a graduate of the American Bankers Association School of Automation and the ABA Commercial Lending School, as well as a graduate of the American Institute of Banking with a Graduate Certificate in Investments. He also was a member of a People to People delegation from Kansas banks to Eastern European countries.

Along the way, Bob taught economics and finance in the evening division at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri. He also taught numerous banking courses in both Hays and Great Bend, Kansas, and lectured at the School of Basic Banking in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was a member and past president of the Board of Trustees.

In Hays Bob was a member and past president of the Hays Rotary Club and served as treasurer and member of the Executive Committee of Hadley Memorial Hospital.

Bob left Hays in 1974 to become active in the Life Insurance Company of Kansas, headquartered in Wichita. He had organized the company’s Board of Directors in 1970 and served as board president before moving there to become active on a daily basis. In his 11 years the company became the top bank credit life insurance company in the state.

On December 5, 1975, he married the love of his life, Doris Leiker. Bob and Doris enjoyed 47 years of life together.

In 1978 the Life Insurance Company of Kansas was purchased by a corporation that also owned National Savings Life, and in 1984 that company transferred Bob to its headquarters in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as president and CEO.

Bob and Doris subsequently established homes in Destin, Florida and Leawood, Kansas, following his retirement.

Bob’s hobbies included snow skiing and golf. Bob was an avid tennis player, winning the 65 year and over Tennessee Doubles Championship! He enjoyed going out for a glass or two of wine with Doris and friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, son Alec Richard and his beloved dog Archie.

Bob leaves behind his wife Doris, daughter Amy and husband, Bruce, five grandchildren: Alec, Jackson, Ben, Sam, and Kate, brothers-in-law Dick and wife Lydia, and Robert and wife, Jill and several nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City Mo. on June 9 with visitation at 1:30 followed by services at 2:00.

DIGHTON - Ina Bell Wilkerson, 85, died on Monday, May 29, 2023 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton. She was born on December 23, 1937 at Walker the daughter of Jonas and Sylvia (Cox) Froelich. 

She married Raymond Lee Wilkerson on February 4, 1956 at Walker. He died on July 19, 1981. Ina Bell attended school at Gorham and graduated from Utica High School in 1955. She was a longtime resident of Dighton and worked as a dispatcher for the Lane County Sheriff Department before working in housekeeping at Lane County Hospital. She enjoyed her flower garden, playing pranks on family and friends, and dancing. She is survived by her three children- Janet Offutt and Mike Wilkerson, both of Dighton and Sherri Jim) Gipson of Rush Center; five grandchildren- Amber (John) Schmalzried of Sterling, Ashley (Iver) Tokoi of Abilene, Regan (Bryan) Scheib of La Crosse, Dakota Gipson of La Crosse and Dillon (Alicia) Gipson of Garden City; and 14 great-grandchildren- Scout Tokoi, Wilkerson Schmalzried, Dighton Tokoi, Garreth Schmalzried, Rayf Schmalzried, Sophie Scheib, Rhiesa Schmalzried, Cannon Tokoi, Joseph Salgado, Reed Scheib, James Gipson, Gibby Schmalzried, Avery Scheib and Ruger Gipson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and six brothers- Arthur, Edward, Elmer, Donald, Morris and Albert. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bible Fellowship Church in Dighton with Rev Darrin Hammond officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton.

She was born on December 23, 1937 at Walker the daughter of Jonas and Sylvia (Cox) Froelich. She married Raymond Lee Wilkerson on February 4, 1956 at Walker. He died on July 19, 1981. Ina Bell attended school at Gorham and graduated from Utica High School in 1955. She was a longtime resident of Dighton and worked as a dispatcher for the Lane County Sheriff Department before working in housekeeping at Lane County Hospital. She enjoyed her flower garden, playing pranks on family and friends, and dancing. She is survived by her three children- Janet Offutt and Mike Wilkerson, both of Dighton and Sherri Jim) Gipson of Rush Center; five grandchildren- Amber (John) Schmalzried of Sterling, Ashley (Iver) Tokoi of Abilene, Regan (Bryan) Scheib of La Crosse, Dakota Gipson of La Crosse and Dillon (Alicia) Gipson of Garden City; and 14 great-grandchildren- Scout Tokoi, Wilkerson Schmalzried, Dighton Tokoi, Garreth Schmalzried, Rayf Schmalzried, Sophie Scheib, Rhiesa Schmalzried, Cannon Tokoi, Joseph Salgado, Reed Scheib, James Gipson, Gibby Schmalzried, Avery Scheib and Ruger Gipson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and six brothers- Arthur, Edward, Elmer, Donald, Morris and Albert. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bible Fellowship Church in Dighton with Rev Darrin Hammond officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Gail H. Benson, 87, Hays, died Monday, May 29, 2023 at Via Christi Village.

She was born February 2, 1936 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Everett and Helen (Thomas) Underwood. 

In 1977, she was united in marriage to James Benson, and he preceded her in death. 

Gail was Vice President of Eagle Land Corporation, and lived many years in Bay Center, Washington before moving to Hays in 2019 to be closer to family. 

She hosted wonderful dinner parties, enjoyed reading, volunteered with the annual HaysMed Craft Fair, and loved her dog Cupcake who was her companion for 17 years. She was a talented seamstress, quilter, and also crocheted, making beautiful quilts and afghans for her family, including each great-grandchild.

Survivors include her son Ross O’Connor of Lubbock, TX, three daughters, Kathleen Gotch of Sebring, FL, Marjorie Hay of Aloha, OR, and Patty Weber and husband Dennis of Hays, 13 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, and her brother Mason Underwood.

No services are planned, and arrangements are in the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Cathy was born on April 17, 1944, during a spring blizzard in Dighton, KS, to George Daniel Cochran and Margaret Charles Cochran.&nbsp; She departed this life to be with her Lord on May 25, 2023 at 11:10 AM.

Cathy was educated in the Dighton, KS schools, graduating from high school in 1962.&nbsp; She attended the University of Kansas, graduating with a degree in speech pathology in 1966.&nbsp; 

During the college years, Cathy was involved in Chi Omega sorority, People-to-People, and Methodist Youth Fellowship, as well as various committees at the university.&nbsp; 

During this time, she also met Howard Wilcox, and following graduation they married on June 26, 1966 in Dighton.&nbsp; They moved to Kansas City, KS where Howard attended KU Medical School and Cathy worked in the Antioch School District as a speech and language therapist.&nbsp; In 1970, their first child, Brennan was born and in 1973 their daughter, Kirsten, joined the family.

In 1975, the family moved to Hays, KS where they lived for the next 28 years.&nbsp; There they established deep roots in the community and raised their children.&nbsp; Cathy volunteered in the public schools, served on city committees, was a CASA volunteer, served as a Stephen’s Minister at the First United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Leadership Hays.&nbsp; In 1993, Cathy served as state president of the Kansas Medical Society Alliance and drove over 20,000 miles by car and also traveled by air that year in support of medicine in Kansas.&nbsp; She also worked at Fort Hays State University in the technology department as a grant writer and seminar assistant, and subsequently at the FHSU Endowment Association as the development coordinator.

In 2003, Cathy and Howard moved to Olathe, KS, where they currently reside. Cathy was involved in many church activities at Church of the Resurrection West in Olathe, where she served as a Congregational Care Minister.&nbsp; She was also an active member of Chapter GP of P.E.O, becoming a 50-year Golden Girl in 2014; a member of Quivira Crossing Chapter of DAR; and served on the boards of Kansas Children’s Service League and Foundation.

Cathy was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, parents, stepfather (Forrest Hardacre), older sister Carol Ann Brown, and brother Charles Cochran and his wife, Sharon.

She is survived by her husband Howard, her children Brennan and Jenny Wilcox of Topeka, KS; Kirsten and John Frazey of Beavercreek, Ohio, her much beloved grandchildren Justis and Britin Frazey and Alex and Aidan Wilcox, her nieces and nephews Sean and Kristen Cochran, Cherri Cochran, Jared and Moriah Cochran and children Clayton, Lane, Ross and Gavin, and Jaime Cochran; her brother Curt and his son Josh and Kim Cochran and their daughter Matilda; her brother-in-law Tom and Dottie Brown and his children Todd, Cory and Vicki Brown and their children Ethan and Ryder; and Amy and Frankz Jacobsen and their children Jared, Jessie and Julia; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Loving God, family, and friends were Cathy’s primary focus.&nbsp; She loved to care for people whenever the need was seen and she loved her family with great passion.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 8th at Church of the Resurrection West; with visitation offered at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m.

Dean Weis, 93, passed away on May 27, 2023. He was born on October 9, 1929, at Leoville, Kan., to Melchior &amp; Mary (Goscha) Weis. 

He married Joyce Pope on July 14, 1953, in Colby. She died March 15, 2022.&nbsp;

A long time Great Bend resident, Dean was a Dowell Sales Engineer in the oilfield until his retirement. 

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #180, VFW Post #3111 and API (American Petroleum Institute). He especially loved spending time with his family. &nbsp;Dean was a veteran of the United States Air Force, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict.&nbsp;

Survivors include his children, Michael Weis and wife Karen of Salina, Jennifer Reynolds and husband Robert of Guymon, Okla., Debbie Wood and husband Russell of Spearville, Timothy Weis and wife Diane of Fontana, Jeff Weis and wife Michele of Edmond, Okla. and Nikki Zamarripa and husband Paul of Great Bend; three brothers, Don Weis of Eudora, Bob Weis and Marvin Weis, both of Spearville; twenty grandchildren; and twenty five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joyce Weis; two brothers, Alfred Weis and Cletus Weis; three sisters, Loretta Walker, Donna Johnson and Marlene Brier; a grandson, Casey Weis; and a great-grandson, Easton Weis.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with vigil service and Knights of Columbus rosary held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Clayton Lyle Rose (Clay), passed away on May 28, 2023, at the age of 33, in Hays, Kansas. He was born on August 15, 1989, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Kevin and Michelle (Brungardt) Rose. Despite being born with muscular dystrophy and a short life expectancy, Clay defied all odds and lived an extra thirty courageous years.&nbsp;

Clay was a man of many names, including “Chubs,” “Bubba,” “ClayMondo,” “Claybee,” “The Little General,” “The Bulldozer,” and most importantly, “Uncle Clay.” He was loved and adored by many, and he never met a stranger. Clay was known for his outgoing personality and his ability to call it as he saw it. He had a great sense of humor and brought joy and life to everyone he met.&nbsp;

Clay was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to his Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, and Kansas Jayhawks. He also enjoyed hunting, watching YouTube videos and playing X-Box with his best friend, Josh McAllister. He graduated from Great Bend High School and Barton Community College.&nbsp;

Clay is survived by his father and mother, Kevin and Michelle Rose of Great Bend; two sisters, Sarah Rose of Great Bend, and Savannah Rose of Dallas, Texas; his four “Helga’s” (nieces), Kayli Shull, Kynli Shull, Kortny Shull, and Kamry Shull, all of Great Bend; his grandmother, Janice Rose &nbsp;and grandparents, Lionel “Bud” and Linda Brungardt all of Great Bend; his aunts and uncles, Kevin and Cindy Brungardt of Cunningham, Chris and Ron Gilley of Medicine Lodge, Donelle Brungardt of Great Bend, Mark Brungardt of Medicine Lodge, Karen and Steve Thier of Plano, Texas, and Keith and Kathryn Rose of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and many loving cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Elmer Rose; a grandmother, Dolores Brungardt; and great-grandparents, Sylvester and Betty Brungardt, Mike and Catherine Boxler and Edwin and Ruth Fischer.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 3, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. He was born on August 15, 1989, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Kevin and Michelle (Brungardt) Rose. Despite being born with muscular dystrophy and a short life expectancy, Clay defied all odds and lived an extra thirty courageous years.&nbsp;Clay was a man of many names, including “Chubs,” “Bubba,” “ClayMondo,” “Claybee,” “The Little General,” “The Bulldozer,” and most importantly, “Uncle Clay.” He was loved and adored by many, and he never met a stranger. Clay was known for his outgoing personality and his ability to call it as he saw it. He had a great sense of humor and brought joy and life to everyone he met.&nbsp;Clay was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to his Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, and Kansas Jayhawks. He also enjoyed hunting, watching YouTube videos and playing X-Box with his best friend, Josh McAllister. He graduated from Great Bend High School and Barton Community College.&nbsp;Clay is survived by his father and mother, Kevin and Michelle Rose of Great Bend; two sisters, Sarah Rose of Great Bend, and Savannah Rose of Dallas, Texas; his four “Helga’s” (nieces), Kayli Shull, Kynli Shull, Kortny Shull, and Kamry Shull, all of Great Bend; his grandmother, Janice Rose &nbsp;and grandparents, Lionel “Bud” and Linda Brungardt all of Great Bend; his aunts and uncles, Kevin and Cindy Brungardt of Cunningham, Chris and Ron Gilley of Medicine Lodge, Donelle Brungardt of Great Bend, Mark Brungardt of Medicine Lodge, Karen and Steve Thier of Plano, Texas, and Keith and Kathryn Rose of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and many loving cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Elmer Rose; a grandmother, Dolores Brungardt; and great-grandparents, Sylvester and Betty Brungardt, Mike and Catherine Boxler and Edwin and Ruth Fischer.&nbsp;Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 3, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. David Clayton Buster, age 78, the son of James Clayton Buster and Elsie Parsons Buster, was born in Larned, KS, October 12, 1944, and passed away May 29, 2023.&nbsp;

David graduated from Larned High School (KS) and attended Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University. 

While attending Fort Hays State University, David met Martha (Marty) Jo Johnston. &nbsp;They were married April 8th, 1968.&nbsp;

After spending some time together in Denver, CO and Fargo, ND, David and Marty moved to the family farm east of Larned, Kansas, where he farmed with his father.

David was a great salesperson, selling irrigation systems to many farmers while helping on the farm.

In 1980, David was elected as the Pawnee County District Court Magistrate Judge, where he served for 28 years.

David loved gardening, often growing a half-acre of fresh produce in his garden at 603 Morris, Larned, KS. &nbsp;He loved refinishing furniture, leather products and other antiques. &nbsp;David also loved hunting birds with his family and friends.

After Marty’s passing on August 13, 2010, David met and married Carol Paulsen Buster. &nbsp;They moved into Carol’s home in Stafford, KS where they had a wonderful life together enjoying many similar hobbies.&nbsp;

Preceding in death were his parents Elsie and Clayton Buster and wife Martha Jo Buster.&nbsp;

David was a devoted brother, father and grandfather, loved by all.

He is survived by his wife Carol Paulsen Buster, and children Philip Allan Wells, San Diego, CA; &nbsp;James (Heather) Arden Buster, Pittsboro, NC; Rebecca (Keith) Buster Hudman, Cypress, TX; and Jessica Buster Poole, Wheaton, IL; his brothers and sister Kent (Gitta) Buster, Katy, TX; &nbsp;Janis (Roger) Lindberg, Formoso, KS; Alan (Pam) Buster, Olathe, KS; and Bryce (Jan) Buster, Overland Park, KS; and four grandchildren, Jacob and Avery Buster; Garrett Hudman; and Forest Poole; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned with Pastor John Hull presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Helen Mary (Mazanec) Horinek joined loved ones on May 29, 2023, in Colby, KS at the age of 100. She was born April 20, 1923, on the family farm north of Colby, to Adolph John Mazanec and Hedvicka (Hattie) Mazanec. Helen grew up with three sisters (one who died as an infant) and three brothers. 

She attended a country school in her earlier years and graduated from Colby High School in 1942. 

Shortly thereafter, she married her sweetheart, Paul M Horinek, Sr. at the Catholic Church in Colby, KS. They would have celebrated 80 years of marriage on February 14, 2023. They settled at the Horinek Family Farm north of Atwood and started their own family with the birth of their sons Paul and Joe Horinek. In 1974, Joe took over the farm. Helen and Paul, Sr. moved to Atwood and lived in town for over 30 years. Raising her family in Atwood, there wasn't a day that Helen didn’t know the latest news or future event. She knew so much about her family, the genealogy tree, Helen’s friends' everyday adventures and even knew more about the locals of the town than they thought she did. Taking road trips with Helen was like getting a history lesson like she wrote the book herself. She had so much to teach us. Helen also loved to travel and took many bus trips all over the United States. Jim and Sister Rita Ann accompanied her on most trips. The one to Canada was the most memorable for them. Everyone in Atwood knew Helen or knew her as a seamstress. I’m sure her address and phone number are still etched in memory for the one person to call. She was a hero to many people who needed last-minute hems, wedding dress alterations, and even someone who could sew a complete prom dress. Never charging what she was worth, she spent countless hours fixing items and wearing out her sewing machines. Some say her handiwork was the best in town. If the living room table didn’t have patterns for sewing it was filled with puzzles to work in her spare time. Not only could she sew a stitch of significance, but she also could knead magic into her famous cherry kolaches and poppyseed rolls. Helen, Hattie and Sister Rita Ann were always in the kitchen making jam and pie after picking fresh black walnuts and rhubarb. If they weren’t cooking or preparing, they were washing dishes and enjoying each others’ conversations. Helen enjoyed celebrating birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and many family events. Helen spent many hours in her backyard garden and could cook anything from scratch. She was a devout Catholic who attended every Mass at her local church. She was an inspiration to her brothers and sisters, but more so a wonderful caregiver to her late husband Paul. May Helen always be remembered as one who mended much more than pants and shirts. She stitched so many lives with knowledge, love, and compassion. There will never be another Helen Mary Mazanec Horinek like the Helen we knew and loved. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Paul M Horinek, Sr.; her sons Paul M. “Paulie” Horinek, Jr. and Joe A. “Joey” Horinek; her siblings Raymond J. Mazanec, Ablin J. Mazanec, Celestine “Sally” Seivert and James R. “Jim” Mazanec. Left to mourn her are her sister, Sister Rita Ann of Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia, KS; grandchildren Matt (Stacy) Horinek, Sharon (Jeff) Towery, Amie (Alex) Horinek and Austin Horinek; great-grandchildren Derian (Jordan) Baker, Brock Horinek (Sophia Burton), Braydon Horinek (Kaylyn Atkinson), Lauren (Justin) Roemer, Korey Ladenburger, Kyler Semple and Lacey Horinek and great-great-grandchild Ruby Holm. Helen will be missed greatly by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation is 3-5:00 p.m., with a vigil at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, June 4, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Helen Mary Horinek

Wilma Ella (Luhman) Zeigler, 95, of Natoma, Kansas passed away Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Wilma was born September 1, 1927 on the family farm north of Natoma. She grew up on the farm and attended country schools. 

She graduated from Natoma High School in the Class of 1946.

Wilma met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Leo William Zeigler on June 6, 1948 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church north of Natoma. This union was blessed with six children; Carol, Ken, Dan, Nancy, Linda and Tracy. They made their home on a farm west of Natoma.

Wilma was a devoted farmer’s wife and homemaker for her children. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church and Church Guild. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and taking care of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She possessed a strong positive attitude and was always smiling.

Wilma’s surviving family include her daughters Carol Mueller (John) of Leawood, Kansas, Nancy Taggart (Frank) of Natoma, Kansas and Linda Crawford (Jeff) of Natoma, Kansas; sons Ken Zeigler (Linda) of Wichita, Kansas, Dan Zeigler (Linda) of Natoma, Kansas and Tracy Zeigler (Annette) of Natoma, Kansas; sister Norma Horine of Carrolltown, Missouri; twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo; brothers Hugo Luhman and Victor Luhman; and sister Esther Moenning.

Celebration of Wilma’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2023 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma. Burial will follow at the Natoma Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Peace Lutheran Church, with the family present to greet friends.

Mary “Cookie” Youngers, of Kingman died May 25, 2023 at the age of 81.&nbsp;

She was born Nov. 20, 1941 in Colwich, Kansas the daughter of Bill and Alvine Linnebur.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mary attended school in Colwich and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, Wichita in 1959.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1976 she graduated from the Chicago School of Decorating and was an entrepreneur of a business in Kingman called Interiors By Mary.&nbsp;&nbsp;After thirty years, she retired in 2006.

She was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella and the Altar Society, all of Kingman.

She married Norman Youngers in 1960 at Colwich; he survives.&nbsp;&nbsp;Other survivors include six children Kevin (Dawna) Youngers, Tina (Scott) Ludwig, Sheila Hooker, Lesa (Rob) Roser, Gary (Gina) Youngers and Mona (Shane) Dreiling; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, plus one on the way in September.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Don (Berdella), Wayne (Luella), Father Leroy Linnebur; and sisters Juanita (Mike) Mohr, Sister Mary Ruth and Helen (John) Youngers; nephew Fr.&nbsp;David Linnebur.

Visitation will be at St. Patrick’s Church in Kingman beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a parish rosary following at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 31, 2023 also at St. Patrick Catholic Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made with Birthline in Wichita or St. Patrick Grade School both in care of Livingston Funeral Home.

Marjorie E. Elder, age 94, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on December 16, 1928, in Meade, Kansas, the daughter of John Frederick &amp; Vergie Irene Morrison Baker.&nbsp; 

A resident of Wichita County, Kansas since 1941 moving from Stratton, Colorado, she was a homemaker and co-owner and operator with Gloria Long of The Sewing Box. &nbsp;

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Leoti, Kansas, Clerk for the Presbyterian Church, and a moderator of the United Presbyterian Women, and the Patchwork Quilters Guild in Leoti, Kansas.

On April 2, 1950, she married LeRoy “Buck” Elder in Leoti, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on December 7, 2005, in Leoti, Kansas.

Survivors include her Vaughn and Tina Elder of Leoti, Kansas, daughters Brenda Moody of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Karen Elder and Ron Rice of Antonino, Kansas, Richelle Elder of Santa Fe, New Mexico, granddaughters&nbsp; Tissha and Josh Brumm of Wellesley, Mass, Tirra and Jordan Carter of Scott City, Kansas; and eight great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Gordon Baker, and sister Arlene Green.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church in Leoti, Kansas with Pastor Steve Payne presiding.

Interment will be in the Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas.
