Butch Hupfer, age 63, of Russell, KS, died May 13, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital - Russell.

He was a lifelong resident of Russell, Kansas, having been born there on July 14, 1959, to Everett L. Hupfer, Sr., and Nancy Kuntzsch.&nbsp; 

He attended Russell High School and was the owner/operator of Butch’s Tree Service.

Butch’s pride and joy were his 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren whom he adored.&nbsp; 

His favorite holiday was Christmas with his family, together with fishing, playing bingo, rabbit hunting, gambling, and was an avid gardener.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kay L. Scheck; two sons, Adam Hupfer and Clint (Jevon) Hejny; three daughters, Melanie (Jesse) Hoch, Jennifer Ayala, and Keri Hejny; a sister, Bonnie Stevenson, together with 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Debbie.

Graveside services will be Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the Cross Plains Cemetery - Russell County.

Venice Genevieve “Genny” Poage was born January 11, 1923 in York, Nebraska to Sylvia Anna and Vern Martin Elliott of York County, Nebraska.

She graduated from Holton High School in 1940 and married John Spencer. They had a son Bruce Alan; they later divorced. On August 24, 1947 she married Arthur Verle Poage. To this union a daughter was born, Verla Genice.

Genny worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator and service representative for 35 years. She served several terms on the Norton City Council and as a Norton Ambassador. 

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Norton.

 Genny enjoyed painting china, refinishing furniture; she taught herself to cane furniture and she loved her cats and antiques.

Genny was preceded in death by her parents Vern and Sylvia; husband Verle; sister Delores; and son-in-law Tony Grysch. 

She is survived by daughter Verla Grysch of Norton; son Bruce Poage and wife Mary of Topeka; Poage grandchildren Steve (Tammy), Kyle (Kristin), all of Topeka; great-grandkids Alex (Becky), Caleb (Abby C.), Trevor (Brynn), Jenna, Abby K., and Nathan, and great-great-grandson Davis.

An informal gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-5:00 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the funeral home. A private inurnment will be held in the Norton Cemetery. Longtime Goodland resident Roger Dean Blume passed away peacefully with his wife Mindy by his side at Topside Manor in Goodland, KS after a long battle with cancer.

He was born on December 17, 1952 in St. Francis KS to Dean and Erna (Schirmer) Blume. 

He attended Armel Grade School and Goodland Grade School and graduated Goodland High School in 1971. He then attended Northwest Kansas Area Vocational Technical School for automotive technology.

He was employed for Safeway Stores. Inc. in Goodland for twenty years. When the store closed, he worked for USD #352 for one year in shipping and supply. He then worked as service manager at Herl Chevrolet Inc. in Goodland for the next 25 years. He thoroughly enjoyed working with his fellow associates and helping all of his customers in any way that he could.

He didn’t know a stranger and loved visiting with anyone about anything. He would always lend a helping hand whenever needed. Bad health forced him to retire in 2014.

He married the love of his life Melinda Brack on June 28, 1975 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Goodland. They lived all of their married life in Goodland.

Roger loved watching NFL, and was an avid Broncos fan. He also loved NASCAR, NHRA Drag Racing, any old Western, Gunsmoke, Pickers, First 48, Moonshiners and Oak Island. He also liked studying everything on his iPad.

He was a Kansas State Grain Inspector for nine years. He also had an after-hours job at his home offering small engine repair service which he thoroughly enjoyed.

His greatest accomplishment that he was very proud of was building two street rods and two muscle cars. He and his wife spent many years attending hundreds of rod runs and car shows with their friends. He also loved to attend the NHRA Mile High Nationals drag racing event with his friends as often as he could.

Roger was a member of the High Plains Performance Club, Early Iron Car Club where he was president for thirteen years. He thoroughly enjoyed the car club for the Rod Runs held every year with the Flatlanders Festival.

He also was a member of the Northwest Kansas Cruisers where many years were spent attending Rod Runs and making cherished friends for life.

He was a member of NRA and enjoyed shooting and collecting. He also enjoyed fishing and camping many weekends at Swanson Reservoir in Trenton, NE.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in St. Francis, KS. He was president of the church council for six years. He was a man of strong faith and truly loved the Lord, his church, his Pastor, and his church family.

Roger is survived by his wife Mindy of the home, his sister Linda Marshall of Hays, KS. He is also survived by four nephews, three nieces, three great nephews and one great-niece; many cousins, his precious cat “Bubbles” and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, in-laws Palmer and Florence Brack, brother-in-law Wayne Marshall and many aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. He will truly be missed by everyone.

Memorial Service will be held on Thursday May 18, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. MT at the Peace Lutheran Church in St. Francis, Kansas. Burial of ashes will follow at the St. Francis Cemetery.

Carl D. Kobler, Jr (Kobie), 72, peacefully passed away on April 24, 2023 at Saint Luke’s Hospital, Kansas&nbsp;City, Missouri. His health had been steadily declining the past few years, then very recently was diagnosed&nbsp;with an aggressive form of leukemia, which he quickly succumbed to.

Kobie was born on June 3, 1950 to Dr. Carl D. Kobler, and Elma H. Kobler, in Kansas City, Kansas. He was&nbsp;the third of four children born to this family. He was preceded in death by both his parents, and oldest&nbsp;brother, Kevin Kobler. He is survived by his wife, Joan Roan (Olathe, KS), his sons, Jamie Dowis (Hays,&nbsp;KS), Jeremy Kobler (Kansas City, MO), and Chris Kobler (Kansas City, MO), grandchildren Jade Dowis,&nbsp;Shandra Kobler, Jace Kobler, and Hudson Kobler, sister Karen Kobler-Peek (Warrensburg MO), brother&nbsp;John Kobler (Derby, KS), and six nephews.

During Kobie’s early years, the family lived for brief periods in California, Idaho, Kansas, then&nbsp;Massachusetts, before moving back to Hill City, Kansas when he was a sixth grader. Kobie claimed Kansas&nbsp;as his home, and simply loved small town-country living.&nbsp;

He attended both grade school and high school in Hill City, where he graduated in May, 1 968.&nbsp;While in high school, Kobie participated in sports, lettering in football and wrestling. He was also a talented vocalist, who very much enjoyed singing in the high school choir, and men’s quartet. Kobie often&nbsp;performed as a soloist, and participated in school sponsored music clinics in Hays as well.

Throughout those early years, you might find him running around with buddies (yep, a little mischief there),&nbsp;or catch him playing snooker at the local pool hall. Otherwise he was quite possibly out hunting or fishing&nbsp;somewhere in Graham County. Both became lifelong hobbies, as did vegetable gardening, which he&nbsp;learned from his folks.

After graduating high school, Kobie was in and out of college. Being undecided on a field of study, he opted&nbsp;instead to try his hand at a variety of vocations, including oil field roughneck, working as a lab tech at his&nbsp;dad’s medical clinic, and later became a licensed journeyman electrician. 

During that stretch of years, it&nbsp;was no secret to those close to Kobie, he battled his own demons with drug addiction. A very costly &nbsp;struggle. Yet by the Grace of God, ultimately he won that battle, and overcame. Kobie became heavily&nbsp;involved with the NA (Narcotics Anonymous) organization. Along with sharing his own experience regularly&nbsp;at local meetings, he became well known as an Area Committee member, was guest speaker at Mid-America Regional Conferences, as well as representing the Mid-America Region as a Delegate to the&nbsp;World Service Conference (WSC) in Van Nuys, CA. In part, the delegates convened to determine policy for&nbsp;the fellowship as a whole. Without question, that amount of dedication helped him remain clean and sober from 1985, until his passing.

Add to that, Kobie eventually returned to college, and in 1991 he received a bachelor’s degree in&nbsp;psychology from Saint Mary of the Plains, Dodge City. Furthering his study, he earned a master's degree&nbsp;in clinical psychology in 1996, from Emporia State University. This formal education provided the pathway&nbsp;for Kobie’s future work in the mental health profession. But in his own words, it was his life experience and&nbsp;ongoing participation in the NA that allowed him to more effectively help countless individuals and families&nbsp;deal with substance abuse.

Although Kobie stuck with those hobbies started in his younger years, he added cooking in there at some&nbsp;point. Like so many of us, he really enjoyed spectator sports, was a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs,&nbsp;and KU Jayhawk Basketball. He often tuned in with friends and family, sometimes getting a little chippy&nbsp;when watching those games. Yeah ok, that was an understatement! As a friend of his recently put it, Kobie&nbsp;had his opinions and, like it or not, he was more than willing to share them. Didn’t matter if it was sports,&nbsp;politics, religion, or whatever. Kobie was always rather salty around the edges. Yet he charmed many,&nbsp;cherished his friendships, and through it all, was a deeply compassionate man.

&nbsp;He really loved and cared&nbsp;for his wife Joan, and their sweet little dog Millie. In the end, what he yearned for most was spending time&nbsp;with his sons and grandkids. 

He wanted to experience so much more of that, but his time came to an end&nbsp;when his Maker called him home. We’re so comforted knowing Kobie’s at peace, yet no doubt we’ll miss&nbsp;him dearly.

Funeral services for Kobie will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, at the United Methodist Church in Hill&nbsp;City, Kansas. Interment to follow at the Hill City Cemetery.

He was also a talented vocalist, who very much enjoyed singing in the high school choir, and men’s quartet. Kobie often&nbsp;performed as a soloist, and participated in school sponsored music clinics in Hays as well.Throughout those early years, you might find him running around with buddies (yep, a little mischief there),&nbsp;or catch him playing snooker at the local pool hall. Otherwise he was quite possibly out hunting or fishing&nbsp;somewhere in Graham County. Both became lifelong hobbies, as did vegetable gardening, which he&nbsp;learned from his folks.After graduating high school, Kobie was in and out of college. Being undecided on a field of study, he opted&nbsp;instead to try his hand at a variety of vocations, including oil field roughneck, working as a lab tech at his&nbsp;dad’s medical clinic, and later became a licensed journeyman electrician. During that stretch of years, it&nbsp;was no secret to those close to Kobie, he battled his own demons with drug addiction. A very costly &nbsp;struggle. Yet by the Grace of God, ultimately he won that battle, and overcame. Kobie became heavily&nbsp;involved with the NA (Narcotics Anonymous) organization. Along with sharing his own experience regularly&nbsp;at local meetings, he became well known as an Area Committee member, was guest speaker at Mid-America Regional Conferences, as well as representing the Mid-America Region as a Delegate to the&nbsp;World Service Conference (WSC) in Van Nuys, CA. In part, the delegates convened to determine policy for&nbsp;the fellowship as a whole. Without question, that amount of dedication helped him remain clean and sober from 1985, until his passing.Add to that, Kobie eventually returned to college, and in 1991 he received a bachelor’s degree in&nbsp;psychology from Saint Mary of the Plains, Dodge City. Furthering his study, he earned a master's degree&nbsp;in clinical psychology in 1996, from Emporia State University. This formal education provided the pathway&nbsp;for Kobie’s future work in the mental health profession. But in his own words, it was his life experience and&nbsp;ongoing participation in the NA that allowed him to more effectively help countless individuals and families&nbsp;deal with substance abuse.Although Kobie stuck with those hobbies started in his younger years, he added cooking in there at some&nbsp;point. Like so many of us, he really enjoyed spectator sports, was a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs,&nbsp;and KU Jayhawk Basketball. He often tuned in with friends and family, sometimes getting a little chippy&nbsp;when watching those games. Yeah ok, that was an understatement! As a friend of his recently put it, Kobie&nbsp;had his opinions and, like it or not, he was more than willing to share them. Didn’t matter if it was sports,&nbsp;politics, religion, or whatever. Kobie was always rather salty around the edges. Yet he charmed many,&nbsp;cherished his friendships, and through it all, was a deeply compassionate man.&nbsp;He really loved and cared&nbsp;for his wife Joan, and their sweet little dog Millie. In the end, what he yearned for most was spending time&nbsp;with his sons and grandkids. He wanted to experience so much more of that, but his time came to an end&nbsp;when his Maker called him home. We’re so comforted knowing Kobie’s at peace, yet no doubt we’ll miss&nbsp;him dearly.Funeral services for Kobie will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, at the United Methodist Church in Hill&nbsp;City, Kansas. Dr. Noman G. Giebler, 92, Hays, died Monday, May 15, 2023 at Via Christi Village.

He was born April 19, 1931 in Hays, the son of Edmund and Anna (Staab) Giebler. 

He graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1949 and Creighton University School of Dentistry. Norman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a dental officer.

On July 14, 1956, he was united in marriage to Elaine M. Karlin in Hays, and they celebrated nearly 50 years of marriage before she preceded him in death in 2006. 

 owned Norman G. Giebler Dentistry, served as president of the Kansas Dental Board, and was on the Regional Board of Dental Examiners. 

His memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325, the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Assembly #282, Elks Lodge, and the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. 

He was a handyman, tinkering and fixing projects around the house. In the mid-80s he took up the hobby of model railroading and joined the Kansas Pacific Model Railroad Club. Norman enjoyed singing in the St. Joseph Church Choir, Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus, and the Volga German Men’s Choir.

Survivors include his two sons, David Giebler and wife Cyndee of Porterfield, WI and Timothy Giebler and wife Sherry of Olathe, two daughters, Julie Becker of Overland Park and Lucy Hahn and husband Christian of Minneapolis, MN, brother Patrick Giebler and wife Terri of Colby, sister Bernice Schumacher of Chesterfield, MO, five grandchildren, Lisa Giebler and husband Michael Shanahan, Emma Giebler, Karl and Erik Hahn, and Conrad Giebler, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elaine, four brothers, Herbert, Albert, Edmund, and Harold Giebler, sister Sybilla Schukman, and a granddaughter, Melissa Becker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 on Saturday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30, a vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. followed by a combined Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary, all on Friday at the funeral home.

They were married on March 31, 1962, in Hays.

Wayne, who lived most of his life in Hays, was a retired electrician, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of the Hays American Legion.

Ann grew up in Hays, was a 1959 graduate of Hays High School, attended the Salina Cosmetology School, was a hair dresser in Hays, and worked at Dillons in Topeka for 10 years.

They were members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays.

Survivors include their children Darin Augustine and wife, Jill, Wichita, KS; Dianne Lindeman and husband Dean, Gilbert AZ; and daughter-in-law Kimberly, Russell, KS; their grandchildren Nick Augustine (Amanda); Alexis Lindeman and fiancé, Jeffery Steiner; Tristan Lindeman; Samantha Lindeman; Aidan Lindeman; Mallory Lindeman; and Chloe Augustine; their great-grandchildren Bentley Augustine; Leighton Augustine; and Levi Steiner.

A woman who could do anything and did everything, Nicole worked as a phlebotomist and massage therapist, along with many other roles. She had a brilliant mind and was a gifted photographer, writer and crafter. Her hobbies included laughing (it was contagious), reading books, poetry, writing, and spending time with friends and family. 

Nicole loved fireworks, flowers, Star Trek, all kinds of people and had learned to love life. She was loved by so many and will be forever missed.

Survivors include her mother Julie (“Mister” Michael) Peterson; her children John Isaac Peterson and Ivy Adaire Peterson; her partner during the last year of her life whom she loved dearly, James Johann; three sisters, Tessa (Jacob) Fryberger, Kimberly Peterson, and Shannon Stephens; two brothers, Dal and Trenton Peterson; grandmother Donita Keil; three aunts, Joni (Brad) Wintholz, Jamie Keil and Anne Jambor;&nbsp; uncle Jeremy (Mandy) Keil; two nieces, Katelyn and Aliyah Fryberger;&nbsp; nephew Kade Fryberger; many cousins; and extended family through James: daughter Olivia Johann; brother Jason Johann; and sister Carrie Beth Cunningham.

Russel Eugene Sytsma, age 75, of Hays, Kansas, died May 12, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays. He was born June 26, 1947, in Martin, MI to Jacob and Martha Sytsma. 

Russ was educated in Evergreen Park, IL and shortly after graduation joined the United States Airforce where he served for 20 years eventually retiring as a MSGT working as an Aircraft Armament Systems Technician.

Russ met and married Karla Joyner in Burbank, CA on July 20, 1974. Karla planned their wedding in six days and in a couple of months they would have celebrated 49 years of marriage this July.

He enjoyed classic/old cars, attending car shows and stock car races, and traveling to the casinos with Karla for a little gambling. He also loved garage sales, auctions, and target shooting.

After his retirement from the Airforce, he worked and retired from the City of Hays Parks Department.

Survivors include his wife Karla of Hays, KS; son David (Nancy) Sytsma of Wheatridge, CO; daughter Becky Colvard of Hays, KS; stepbrother: George Voss of Evergreen Park, IL; sister-in-law Vivian Sytsma of WI;&nbsp; stepsister Nancy (Rick) Hollingsworth of Benson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law Robin Bauer;&nbsp; stepsister Carol DeHogg; brother David Sytsma; and his mother-in-law Inez Basgall.

Memorial visitation will be Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine Street Hays, KS 67601.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St Joseph Catholic Church, 215 West 13th Street, Hays, KS 67601.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow the Mass in the State of Kansas Veterans Cemetery at WaKeeney where military honors will be provided by the Hays VFW Honor Guard.

Elvera Mock, age 97, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Via Christi Village in Wichita, Kansas. She&nbsp;was born November 28, 1925, in Liebenthal, Kansas, to Bernard and Mary (Depperschmidt) Herrman.

She married Daniel Rupp in 1946. They had one daughter. After the death of her first husband, she&nbsp;married Norman Mock in 1979.

Elvera had many passions in life including bowling, fishing, cooking, sewing, trying her luck at slot&nbsp;machines and spending time with family and friends. She touched the lives of everyone she met and will&nbsp;be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Terry McConnaughy; grandchildren Daniel McConnaughy and wife&nbsp;Juanita Norton, LoriBeth McConnaughy and husband Jonathan; great-grandchildren Tristan and Taylor&nbsp;McConnaughy, and Dylan Oliver.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Daniel Rupp; second husband Norman Mock;&nbsp;two brothers Wilbert and Richard Herrman; three sisters Firmina Herrman, Alfrieda Dinges, and Mary&nbsp;Ann Randa; sisters-in-law Dolores Herrman and Gloria Herrman.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. There is no visitation.

Raymond Perez, 76, passed away May 13, 2023 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

He was born November 22, 1946 in Kinsley, Kansas, the son of Clemente and Lucia Mariche Perez.

A longtime area resident, he was a road maintenance supervisor for KDOT. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Larned Country Club, and PVCH Auxiliary, all of Larned. He coached Legion Baseball, Renegades Girl’s Softball, and basketball at Sacred Heart, and he also enjoyed league bowling and playing softball.

On August 26, 1967 he married Cynthia “Cindy” Meeker at Kinsley; she survives.

Other survivors include son Lynn (Toni) Perez, Pratt; daughter Rachel Perez, Larned; brother Tony (Darla) Perez, Larned; sister Linda (Frank) Garcia, Wichita; seven grandchildren, Brittney (Eddie), Adrian, Avion, Andreus (Julie), Reiley (Aaron), Cade, Halley; and five great-grandchildren, Ozlyn, Kamila, KeAndre, Zayne, Aalias.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, John Perez, Terry Perez, Felix Perez, Manuel Perez, Guadalupe “Lupe” Perez, Pete Perez, Frank Perez; three sisters, Eleanor Sanders, Jane Bronson, and Trinidad Ruiz.

DIGHTON - Brian Patrick Selfridge, 67, died on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on February 25, 1956 at Scott City the son of Gilbert Lee and Lila Ann (Dyer) Selfridge. Brian graduated from Dighton High School in 1974 where he was a member of the football team, Dighton Singers and the band. He graduated from Wichita State University with his degree in business administration.

He then returned to the family farm in Lane County. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Dighton and FTMC. He was very active in the motorcycle club and took many trips on his Harley. He also enjoyed photography and classic rock. He is survived by his three sisters- Susan Daniels of Leavenworth, Shelley Selfridge of Dighton and Jill Obrock of Kingman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers- Paul Selfridge and Kent Selfridge. Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023 at United Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev A.G. Turner officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Bernard Charles “Ben” Levings, 86, passed away on May 13, 2023, at University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kan. He was born on November 10, 1936, in Axtell, Kan., to Charles and Berniece (Thompson) Levings. 

On October 21, 1975, he married Eddy Ruth Roth. She died October 29, 1984. Ben later married Cindy Fercking in 1981, and they later divorced in 1992.

A Great Bend resident since 1974, Ben worked as a shop forman for equipment manufacturing. He was also skilled in construction, custom farm work, livestock, insurance sales, lock smithing, truck driving, and real estate.

Bernard is survived by close friend and caregiver, Cindy Fercking; a stepdaughter, Michelle; and a daughter of the heart, Vickie Dodson. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eddy; and two stepdaughters, Pamela and Mary.

Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Vandenburg presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery.

Jacquetta Mae Houser, age 102, of Quinter, KS passed away Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care in Quinter, KS. She was born July 26, 1920 to John and Bertha Reed. 

She graduated from Quinter High School in 1938 and attended Pasadena Junior College after high school.

On April 25, 1942 she married Roger J. Houser in Quinter. Soon after, he left to serve his country in WWII with the United States Air Force.

Her life was full and busy as a mother and running a restaurant with her husband. After the sale of their restaurant, The J&amp;R Grill, she helped her husband at Quinter Grain Company by weighing trucks during harvest for 28 years and often in later years with her two granddaughters in tow.

She loved her family and being a homemaker. She enjoyed collecting and selling antiques and turquoise jewelry and had a great love for animals. She loved spending time traveling especially to New Mexico and California to spend time with family. She was an avid sports fan, loved KU basketball and the Lakers.

Jacquetta is survived by her sons, Roger and Sue Houser and Lonnie and Michelle Houser; two granddaughters, Heather and Thad Whalen and Andrea Hargitt; grandson Greg Youngblood; nine great-grandchildren, Stella, Sophie and Jude Whalen, Jonah and Sydney Ruckman, Whitley and Savannah Hargitt and Zach and Cody Youngblood.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her siblings Effie Wigington, Harry Reed and Bobby Reed.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter, KS. Burial at Baker Township Cemetery in Quinter immediately following the service.

Lois Jane Burger (Blase), age 95, passed away peacefully May 12, 2023 at the Villa Grace Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Ellsworth, KS , following a stroke in January. Previous to January, she had been living at the Good Samaritan Assisted Living since April of 2019.

She was born September 28, 1927, to Louis and Concordia Blase of Sylvan Grove, KS.

She graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in May of 1945.

 She was married to her high school sweetheart, Merle D. Burger, on September 29, 1946, just five months following Merle’s return from WWII, and discharge from the United States Navy in April of 1946. Merle &amp; Lois had three children, Cheryl, Gregory &amp; Barbara.

They made their home on the old August Reimer farm, north of Sylvan Grove, KS, for 52 years, before moving to Lucas, Ks in August of 1998.

Lois worked along side Merle for over 50 years helping where she could with the farm work. This included raising chickens, gathering eggs, feeding calves, driving grain trucks during harvest and taking meals to the field. The hired help especially enjoyed wheat harvest, just for the meals Lois prepared and took to the fields. Her family will attest that she was a great cook!

While living on the farm, Lois always looked forward to her monthly meeting with the ladies in “The Thursday Club,” where there was a lot of quilting, (she loved making quilts) cross stitch, sewing , eating desserts, and girl talk.

After moving to Lucas in 1998, Lois (who always loved to play games and cards), joined “The Bunco Club,” which was similar to Thursday Club, sans the sewing. She also met regularly with the Gloria Dei ladies for bible study and kept busy spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Merle D; her son Gregory; son-in-law law Roger Kvasnicka; brothers Kenneth and Raymond; sister Arlene Dohl; grandchildren Kari and Kurt Bretz and Clint Francis. 

She is survived by her brother Ron (Mary) Blase of Salina; daughters Cheryl (Gordon ) Bretz and Barb Kvasnicka, all of Lucas, daughter-in-law Wilma Burger of rural Sylvan Grove; five grandchildren, Chad Burger (Terri) of Kensington, Jerome (Mandy) Burger of rural Sylvan Grove; Marcie Burger of Colby; Kyle (Jennifer) Bretz of Dover, NH; Erin (Seth) Streit of Lucas; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Previous to January, she had been living at the Good Samaritan Assisted Living since April of 2019.She was born September 28, 1927, to Louis and Concordia Blase of Sylvan Grove, KS.She graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in May of 1945. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Merle D. Burger, on September 29, 1946, just five months following Merle’s return from WWII, and discharge from the United States Navy in April of 1946. Merle &amp; Lois had three children, Cheryl, Gregory &amp; Barbara.They made their home on the old August Reimer farm, north of Sylvan Grove, KS, for 52 years, before moving to Lucas, Ks in August of 1998.Lois worked along side Merle for over 50 years helping where she could with the farm work. This included raising chickens, gathering eggs, feeding calves, driving grain trucks during harvest and taking meals to the field. The hired help especially enjoyed wheat harvest, just for the meals Lois prepared and took to the fields. Her family will attest that she was a great cook!While living on the farm, Lois always looked forward to her monthly meeting with the ladies in “The Thursday Club,” where there was a lot of quilting, (she loved making quilts) cross stitch, sewing , eating desserts, and girl talk.After moving to Lucas in 1998, Lois (who always loved to play games and cards), joined “The Bunco Club,” which was similar to Thursday Club, sans the sewing. She also met regularly with the Gloria Dei ladies for bible study and kept busy spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly.Lois is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Merle D; her son Gregory; son-in-law law Roger Kvasnicka; brothers Kenneth and Raymond; sister Arlene Dohl; grandchildren Kari and Kurt Bretz and Clint Francis. Marilyn Joyce Heble, 82, of Colby, died Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center, in Colby, surrounded in love by her two children. She was born January 4, 1941, in Park, KS, to Alphonse and Matilda (Kuhn) Depperschmidt.

She was born January 4, 1941, in Park, KS, to Alphonse and Matilda (Kuhn) Depperschmidt. She graduated from Park High School in 1958 and moved to Colby where she began working at Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator for 20+ years. She met and married Duane Heble on October 6, 1962. They continued to make their home in Colby and welcomed and raised three children. Marilyn was always active and interested in all their activities, but she was also careful to raise them to be independent and not get in the way of “natural consequences”, which was tested more than once. She was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and volunteered in numerous capacities over the years, but best utilized her organization skills and compassion for others by coordinating funeral dinners for over a decade. She volunteered with R.S.V.P. in Colby, and lots of other community projects, she just really enjoyed being busy and helping out in any way she could. Marilyn was very creative and enjoyed making handmade gifts for friends and family. Later in life she discovered she had a talent for art, and she enjoyed sketching and painting handmade birthday cards, gift bags and small prints. She was a skilled seamstress and quilter and made all kinds of projects over the years, her handmade Christmas stockings will be cherished by her children and grandkids for years to come. Marilyn was also a great baker; her homemade pies were always greatly anticipated and requested by many. She enjoyed making them to share with friends as thank you or just because she was thinking about you. Marilyn had a big heart and a host of talents, but her biggest joy was her grandkids and sharing time with them. She instilled her love for games and playing cards with all of them. She loved playing cards, especially rummy, and had her own version (Gma’s Rummy) where the rules could change at “Gma's” discretion. Cards brought her a lot of joy and camaraderie, and she was always up for another hand, usually outlasting everyone. Her generosity of her time and involvement in the local groups and activities gave her the opportunity to develop countless friendships throughout the community, she valued these friendships greatly and truly cherished spending time with her friends and relatives. The beloved Sacred Heart “coffee group” was a constant over the last 30+ years, and a great source of sharing faith, deep friendships and lots of fun. She loved her family roots and always looked forward to spending time with her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, childhood friends and countless God children. Always being a very detailed and organized person, she was the natural organizer of many family and school reunions. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Duane of 60 years; parents; her beloved daughter Brenda; and siblings Cletus Depperschmidt, Gerald Depperschmidt, Kathy Woerpel, and Linda Waddell. She is survived by her children Blaine (Vonceile) of Lindsborg, KS, and Becky (Scot) Bullock of Leawood, KS; grandchildren Hanna (Trevor) Whittaker, Clare Bullock, Colby Bullock, Blake Heble, Carly Bullock, and Brandt Heble; great-grandson Brooks Whittaker; and brothers Les (Connie) Depperschmidt of Derby, KS, Marvin (Norma) Depperschmidt of Salina, KS and Ken (Diane) Depperschmidt of Smith Center, KS. Visitation is 5-6:00 p.m., with a vigil at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, May 14, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, KS. The funeral Mass is at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby, with burial in the church cemetery.
