Creighton University economist Ernie Goss sees the growth of government under President Biden's proposed budget as a negative.

"We're going to see an overheated economy," Goss said. "The federal government is expanding. The latest proposed budget for next year is $6 trillion. I'm sorry to be laughing, but that is out there. That's going to have inflationary pressures. The Federal Reserve says that they see this as transitory. We hope and pray it is transitory."

Goss noted that it isn't the same as the late 1970s under President Carter.

"We don't have the oil prices pushing," Goss said. "Oil prices are higher. We're now at $68 a barrel, but we're not seeing that supply-side push in terms of oil. We are seeing it in other areas. For example, lumber. We are seeing that growth there, out the roof. We're seeing housing prices 12% growth year over year."

Another drag on growth in the opinion of several of the managers Goss surveys is a lack of skilled workers.

"Twenty-three percent of the supply managers listed the shortage of workers and the supply of workers as being the number one challenge for 2021 to their company," Goss said. 

Due to the bounce back growth of the economy, however, the overall Mid-America Business Conditions Index was at a strong 72.3 for May. Anything above 50 is considered growth.

Goss: Growth of government could 'overheat' economy

Andrew Duke, who recently graduated from Hays High School, is headed to Princeton University in the fall.

Duke is the grandson of Josephine Squires.

Princeton was not the only Ivy League college at which Duke was accepted. He was also accepted to Harvard and Duke universities.

Duke said he received a generous financial aid package to attend Princeton, but added Princeton was his dream school.

Duke plans to study math with the hopes of eventually earning his Ph.D. and becoming a math professor like his grandfather.

"I really enjoy the subject, and I would like to share it with more people," he said. "Math is a really great subject, and I think it's a shame that a lot of people don't really develop a love for it."

"It is taking the universe as we see it and putting it in terms that we can understand and quantify, and we can use it to predict other things," he said. "I also really like that it is perfectly logical. Any time you have a problem in math, there is a set solution or a set number of solutions."

Duke also has a creative side. He likes to write. He's participated in all of the musicals and all of the plays during his four years of high school. Most recently, he had a role in the HHS production of "Rent."

He also directed  and produced "Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier" to earn his Eagle Scout Award.&nbsp;

Duke graduated first in his class and received a perfect score on his ACT on his first attempt, and a 1580 on the SAT. A perfect score on the SAT is 1600.

Duke served as a co-captain of the HHS Scholar's Bowl team, which went to state three of his four years in high school. His math relay team also took first place his junior year. The event was not held this school year because of COVID. He also took home individuals medals in math relays.

He took calculus I, II and III at FHSU, and just finished linear algebra in the spring.

Duke could have applied for advanced placement at the Fort Hays State University Kansas Academy of Math and Science, but he opted to stay at HHS. He also never skipped any grades.

Duke said he wanted his social life and extracurricular activities to thrive as much as his academics. He said being a complete person was more important to him than completing his education a year or two early.

"There were some points where I had to blaze my own path and prepare myself," he said, "because I just think pragmatically Hays High doesn't have the experience and resources to help a student go all the way to an Ivy because the vast majority of students won't be going that far.

"I think I got some great instruction," he said. "I don't think if I hadn't been at as good of a school it would have been at least been a hindrance to me to shoot for the stars."

Some of his most treasured memories have been spending time with his friends, whether that be joking during play practice or eating wings during the Super Bowl.

Duke said he is excited to start college and have more independence, but moving half way across the country to New Jersey to go to school will be difficult.&nbsp;

"It's going to be a massive change and moving a long ways away," he said. "I'm going to be meeting a lot of new people. I don't know anyone who is going to Princeton, personally. ...

"I am crossing my fingers about what comes next."

Hays High graduate headed to Princeton

OPEC and its allies have confirmed plans to return more than two million barrels of crude oil per day to the international marketplace. Energy ministers on Tuesday said they plan to add back 350,000 barrels per day in June and 440,000 barrels per day in July, while Saudi Arabia adds back its one million barrels in additional, voluntary cuts. A technical report from the cartel Monday suggested world oil demand is set for a big rebound. Crude futures prices gained nearly four percent in morning trading Tuesday, ahead of the announcement of increased output. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week and the month of June at $56.50 per barrel. That's up a quarter from the week before, but nearly three dollars higher than a month earlier. The average price for the month of May was $55.28 per barrel. Independent Oil &amp; Gas reports four active rigs in eastern Kansas, down two for the week, and 18 west of Wichita, down one. Operators are about to spud three new wells in Ellis County, and reached total depth on two more. Drilling was underway on one lease in Stafford County. Baker Hughes reported 457 active drilling rigs across the U.S. on Friday, an increase of three oil rigs.&nbsp; The count in Texas was up four rigs, while New Mexico was down one. The national count is down 4% in the last month, but up 63% year-over-year, according to Enverus Rig Analytics. Out of 27 new drilling permits approved across Kansas last week, just three were west of Wichita. That's 351 new drilling permits so far this year, compared to 187 by the end of May last year amid the pandemic slowdown. It's seven permits short of the total through May of 2019. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported 23 new well-completions for the week, nine in eastern Kansas and 14 west of Wichita. That's 300 completed wells so far this year across the state. Weekly U.S. crude-oil production topped eleven million barrels per day for the first time in five weeks, increasing 92,000 barrels per day from the week before. The government reported a slight drop in imports and inventories. For the week ending May 21, domestic stockpiles dropped 1.7 million barrels to just over 484 million. That's about two percent below the five-year seasonal average. Domestic gasoline stockpiles dropped by 1.7 million barrels last week, and are now about three percent below the five-year average. Crude imports were down 138,000 barrels to 6.3 million barrels per day. The four-week average for U.S. imports is down slightly from a year ago. Memorial Day weekend gasoline prices were the highest in seven years. The auto club AAA says the national average Thursday was just over $3.04 per gallon, more than a dollar higher than last year. The average across Kansas was $2.82 per gallon. Prices held steady locally, with most stations in Hays and Great Bend posting $2.74 per gallon. Your 15-gallon fill-up cost nearly $17 more than it did last Memorial Day. Oil-by-rail traffic was down last week but remains nearly ten percent above the totals from a year ago. The Association of American Railroads reported 10,800 tanker cars moving petroleum or petroleum products for the week ending May 22. That's down 430 cars from the week before but it marks a 9.8 percent increase over the same week last year. An oil-drillers group in Canada is raising its drilling forecast for the year. The Petroleum Services Association of Canada, raised it's annual forecast to 3,600 new wells this year, up 7.5 percent from their prediction at the start of the year. A report in the Financial Post credits higher oil demand, support for higher prices, and a big government fund to keep service workers busy decommissioning wells. Drilling in Canada was down 30% in the first quarter of 2021, compared to a year earlier. But the group expects drilling from April to December to double that for the same 9-month period in 2020. The world's largest energy companies are increasingly being forced to rethink their positions on climate change, after historic defeats in the boardroom and in the courtroom. Exxon Mobil lost at least two board seats to a small activist hedge fund making green demands in what was the most expensive proxy fight in history. Vote tallies for five more seats on the Exxon board were too close to call. Shareholders at Chevron backed a call for that company to cut emissions from the end-use of its products. &nbsp;61 percent of voting stockholders supported the petition. And, a judge has ordered Royal Dutch Shell to slash emissions from the end use of its products by 45% in less than ten years. Shell said it would appeal, and analysts said the decision is not the final word in the case. A new government report suggests a huge drop in US electricity consumption last summer, except at home, where usage spiked. Total usage was the lowest in five years. Commercial and Industrial consumption dropped to the lowest level since 2004. But residential consumption was through the roof. The Energy Information Administration says near-record high temperatures, along with more people spending more time at home, prompted all-time record high consumption among residential users. This year, EIA predicts growth in consumption among commercial and industrial customers, and a decline in residential use. The state-run oil company of Mexico is buying the remaining interest in a refinery complex it operates in Houston. For nearly thirty years, PEMEX and Shell have jointly operated the Deer Park facility in a fifty-fifty partnership. Now Pemex is buying out its partner for $596 million in cash, debt, and inventory. Shell officials said they had not planned on marketing their half of the refinery, but reached the agreement following an unsolicited offer.

News From the Oil Patch: OPEC+ to increase output

RUSSELL — From June 10 to -13, Russell will celebrate the 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration of Russell County during Prairiesta 2021.&nbsp;

Friday and Saturday events held at the new museum at 825 N. Kansas, takes you back to relive how the pioneers survived in the late 1800's. Demonstrations in wheat grinding, bread making, milking, butter making, rope making, bees wax candle making, washing, gardening, knitting, aprons, knot tying, and much more will be presented and all ages will be able to participate. Kids can get their "Passport to History" by participating in demonstrations and win prizes.&nbsp; The Russell County Muzzle Loaders will have an encampment set up all four days, and a chuckwagon display and cowboy poet will be on hand along with Will Rogers and Abe Lincoln personalities. A program on Women’s 1800s Fashion will be held on Saturday at 2 pm.&nbsp;

 </figure>SubmittedRUSSELL — From June 10 to -13, Russell will celebrate the 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration of Russell County during Prairiesta 2021.&nbsp;Friday and Saturday events held at the new museum at 825 N. Kansas, takes you back to relive how the pioneers survived in the late 1800's. Demonstrations in wheat grinding, bread making, milking, butter making, rope making, bees wax candle making, washing, gardening, knitting, aprons, knot tying, and much more will be presented and all ages will be able to participate. Kids can get their "Passport to History" by participating in demonstrations and win prizes.&nbsp; The Russell County Muzzle Loaders will have an encampment set up all four days, and a chuckwagon display and cowboy poet will be on hand along with Will Rogers and Abe Lincoln personalities. A program on Women’s 1800s Fashion will be held on Saturday at 2 pm.&nbsp;	If you are a Russell County Livestock producer "Burn your brand into history" during our Branding Party. Many other displays from area organizations including 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA, Farm Bureau, Smoky Hill Trail Assoc., Santa Fe Trail Assoc., Kansas Post Rock Limestone Coalition, Sternberg Museum of Natural History, and Kansas Strong will be on hand for visitors to learn more about the area and our history. Make sure you tour the new museum and enjoy "Little Town" and the "Barn" with a history of Agricultural, Academics and Autos, including Russell County and Prairiesta memorabilia.&nbsp;	Kids can also hunt for shark teeth and arrowheads and enjoy programs at the Fossil Station Museum located at 331 N. Prairie heritage events, demonstrations featured at Prairiesta 2021

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer and rancher Summer is here! The kids completed their last day of school and have officially reported for summer duty as farm kids. During a recent breakfast conversation, my family sat down to identify some goals for this summer. The kids want to bake cupcakes, ride their bikes, go fishing and visit some museums. My husband wants to harvest wheat and manage irrigation. I want to maintain a clean house. I know some goals are loftier than others. &nbsp; Another major goal is to keep the kids learning so they don’t experience the “summer slip.” &nbsp; A weekly visit to the local library, daily reading expectations, intentional quiet time, and going outside to enjoy and explore the outdoors (while also burning off energy) are all on the agenda. There’s a lot of “learning” my husband and I want the kids to experience this summer.&nbsp; &nbsp; As we were having this family conversation, storm clouds were forming in the counties to the far west of us. The TV weather personalities began mentioning the potential for extreme weather later in the day. As the day continued, the sky to the west of us began darkening and you could hear an occasional rumble of thunder in the distance. &nbsp; By late afternoon, my daughter’s tee-ball coach began texting parents to determine if we’d continue with our evening practice. The atmosphere was changing, and you could feel it in the air. The weather personalities were now on the TV more than the regular programs while a radar image filled the screen. The folks in the counties west of us were definitely experiencing some weather. &nbsp; As our tee-ballers were learning how to hit a ball and run to first base, the darkness filling the horizon to the west expanded to include the northern sky. Rumbles of thunder became more frequent and closer. &nbsp; Practice was cut short because of &nbsp;the threat of lightning. As we drove home we talked about the great science lesson we were about to experience. We’d be able to enjoy an unobstructed view to watch those western storm clouds build and move to the east while staying well to the north of us.&nbsp; &nbsp; Once at our prime viewing spot, I could tell the kids clearly felt the energy building to the north and west of us. It was an impressive display of darkness within those moving clouds. We could hear the thunder. We could see the lightning. We could smell the rain. And we could feel when the wind shifted. &nbsp; The storm that was once to the north of us was now rapidly moving toward us. We quickly moved the vehicles into our shop before the rain began. We went back to the house and turned on the TV. The radar showed what we already knew. &nbsp; From our porch we watched excitedly as the rain fell hard and our driveway quickly became a stream. And then the hail began. Large hail. Tapping on the roof, beating the trees and bushes, bouncing before carpeting the ground. The kids’ excitement turned to concern as the hail continued falling. It kept falling. We witnessed the most wicked hail we have ever experienced. &nbsp; Early the next morning, the kids were with us as my husband and I scouted our fields and assessed the damage. The kids helped find all of the dents and broken mirrors and busted windshields I needed to take photos of for insurance. They counted the holes now allowing light to shine through into the machine shed. They walked into the saturated wheat fields to help their daddy count the broken stems of full wheat heads that would have been harvested in just a few weeks. They drove through the water to check on the submerged fields of newly planted corn and soybeans. &nbsp; They heard my husband and I calmly evaluating and problem-solving each situation.&nbsp; &nbsp; And they learned through our words and our reactions that it could have been much worse and there is still so much to be thankful for even with all of the damage. &nbsp; I can’t quite connect all of the formal educational standards and competencies we covered during this event, but know wholeheartedly that even though it's summer break, our kids have already gained some pretty important lessons here on the farm.

Life of longtime FHSU employee will be celebrated Saturday

ELLIS COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Hyundai Sonota driven by Jessica R Wise, 31, Wichita, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near the Victoria exit. The car hydroplaned into the the ditch and rolled&nbsp;

EMS transported Wise and a passenger identified as Corey L. Dabbs, Sr, 39, Wichita to Hays Medical Center. A 7-year-old passenger was not injured. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Phase 3 of the second season of the North Vine Street Corridor 
Project begins this week, weather permitting. 

During this phase, 
traffic on Vine Street in the area from 35th Street to 43rd Street will 
be shifted to the west side of Vine Street on the new pavement so that 
work can begin on the east side. Like previous phases of construction, 
left turns are not allowed in areas of construction where traffic is 
reduced to a single lane. Only right turns will be allowed to and from 
the I-70 ramps and various intersections. The currently posted detours 
will direct traffic through the construction zones. &nbsp;

Southbound 
Vine to eastbound I-70; as well as, eastbound I-70 to northbound Vine is
 being detoured to use the 32nd Street roundabout. &nbsp; &nbsp; Northbound Vine 
Street to westbound I-70; as well as, westbound I-70 to southbound Vine 
is detoured to use 41st Street, General Hays Road and 43rd Street. 
&nbsp;This phase of construction is expected to last several months through 
the summer.

Hurricanes Swim Club changes practice location, time

Today, I am announcing my candidacy for the Hays City Commission. 

I have had the privilege of serving as Hays city commissioner for the past 4 ½ years. It has been the most challenging and gratifying position I have had the honor of holding.

It is my belief that public service is a responsibility that we share and we should all be willing to contribute our time and best effort toward the well-being of the community in which we live, work and play. I am aware of the needs of the community, the resources available and am aware of the public concerns that face Hays.

I am a lifetime resident of Hays and have a passion for this amazing community. My husband and I have raised our family here and I have been active as a businesswoman, community volunteer and now have been a city commissioner, elected four years ago. 

I approached the campaign and election with four things in mind:

· Leaving this community better than I found it · Sustainable, responsible and planned economic growth · Fiscal responsibility · Quality of life

My initial goals for our community have not changed. I continue to believe there is more to be done to ensure the future of Hays is constantly on our radar — 10, 25 and 50 years from now.

I believe I can continue to add value to the commission and would add the following to my list of intentions: 

· A continued focus on collaboration, working with the county commissioners as we look to Hays, Ellis County and our region. 

The future of rural America continues to be in the hands of residents just like you and me, and I appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve Hays and its residents.

LETTER: Jacobs announces filing for Hays City Commission 

The Hays USD 489 school board last week approved a two-year lease for space at the Hadley Center for two special education programs.

The space will be dubbed the WeKan Center and house the Early Childhood Special Education Program and Special Education Transitional Program for high school students.

Kyle Carlin, special education cooperative director, said the space available in the Early Childhood Complex for the Early Childhood Special Education Program is limited. The program can serve about seven students in that space at a time.

The program has split some of its spots with some children only attending two days per week.

The new center would run two half-day preschool programs four days per week, serving up to 10 students with disabilities.&nbsp;

The Fort Hays State University Tiger Tots program had been using a space in the Hadley Center, but is being moved back to campus. This left a vacancy at the center that was already set up for a preschool.

Although there would be some shared space, most of the day, the preschool children and transitional students would be in separate spaces.

The space that is left vacant at the Early Childhood Complex will be used for therapists, office space,&nbsp; testing and the facility's mental health staff.

The eighth-grade class that is moving up to the high school in the fall has 14 students in its life skills section. This was going to put pressure on space available for special education at the high school, Carlin said.

Carlin proposed moving the high school students in the 18- to 21-year-old program to the Hadley Center to make more space for the younger students coming into the high school.

The programming at the new location will include work-based skills, work study, independent living skills, community engagement, self-advocacy and functional academic skills. The transitional students will still have access to resources at Hays High, including a functional ag class.&nbsp;

Carlin said he thought the location downtown should cut costs for student transportation as transitional high school students would be close to businesses where they could participate in work study.

The cost for the program will result in no net increase in cost to the coop or the Hays district.&nbsp;No additional staff will be needed to service the two programs at the new center.

The cost for renting the space will be $4,150 per month, but FHSU will contribute $1,300 per month toward rent, as it plans to use the center for a learning lab for its college students.&nbsp;

The remaining funding for rent will be paid for through federal COVID relief funds. Many of the students missed important learning opportunities during the pandemic, and this will allow them to do some catch up, Carlin said.

Students from all four school districts that are served by the special education cooperative will benefit from these programs. Those four schools include Hays, Ellis, Victoria and LaCrosse.

Carlin said he hoped the district could eventually develop enough space for the Early Childhood Special Education Program to move back to the Early Childhood Complex. However, he said he saw advantages in the transitional program remaining downtown.

This left a vacancy at the center that was already set up for a preschool.Although there would be some shared space, most of the day, the preschool children and transitional students would be in separate spaces.The space that is left vacant at the Early Childhood Complex will be used for therapists, office space,&nbsp; testing and the facility's mental health staff.<h2>Transitional program</h2>The eighth-grade class that is moving up to the high school in the fall has 14 students in its life skills section. This was going to put pressure on space available for special education at the high school, Carlin said.Carlin proposed moving the high school students in the 18- to 21-year-old program to the Hadley Center to make more space for the younger students coming into the high school.The programming at the new location will include work-based skills, work study, independent living skills, community engagement, self-advocacy and functional academic skills. The transitional students will still have access to resources at Hays High, including a functional ag class.&nbsp;Carlin said he thought the location downtown should cut costs for student transportation as transitional high school students would be close to businesses where they could participate in work study.The cost for the program will result in no net increase in cost to the coop or the Hays district.&nbsp;No additional staff will be needed to service the two programs at the new center.The cost for renting the space will be $4,150 per month, but FHSU will contribute $1,300 per month toward rent, as it plans to use the center for a learning lab for its college students.&nbsp;The remaining funding for rent will be paid for through federal COVID relief funds. Many of the students missed important learning opportunities during the pandemic, and this will allow them to do some catch up, Carlin said.Students from all four school districts that are served by the special education cooperative will benefit from these programs. Those four schools include Hays, Ellis, Victoria and LaCrosse.Carlin said he hoped the district could eventually develop enough space for the Early Childhood Special Education Program to move back to the Early Childhood Complex. However, he said he saw advantages in the transitional program remaining downtown.

🎙Post Podcast: Hays Chamber preparing for upcoming events

One of the happiest days of Teresa Schrant's teaching career was the beginning of the spring semester when she was allowed to return to school.

Schrant, a fourth-grade teacher at Holy Family Elementary School, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer in 2019. She spent a month in Kansas City, where she underwent a stem cell transplant. When she returned home in mid-2020, she was quarantined in her house for months, only allowed to walk up and down her block as long as she didn't stop to talk to anyone.

Schrant was not allowed back into her classroom for the entire year of 2020.

"I was so ready to come back," she said. "It was so hard to stay back in the spring after Christmas [2019] because I felt good."

She said she missed teaching so much. She snuck up to the school a few times and greeted the kids from a distance.

"I'm not done teaching yet," she said. "I love what I'm doing."

Although Schrant's cancer is in remission, her mother was placed on Hospice shortly before the end of the school year as a result of a long-term illness. She said her faith and the support of her school and faith communities meant so much to her in her time of struggle.&nbsp;

"I have people who can support me through their prayers and their faith," she said. "I can support other people through my prayers and my faith. We have to help lift each other up."

Schrant continued to teach religion classes via Zoom, even though she was quarantined in her home. She said she could only know her students through their masks and a screen, which was very hard.

"I think teaching here has helped me to grow in my faith," she said of Holy Family. "For that reason, hopefully, I can help the kids grow in their faith because they come seeking to find their faith in the world. We have a hard world to fit in."

"It is really important for me to teach them they will always have their faith that they can rely on if nothing else is there."

Schrant has spent her entire 40-year career with Hays Catholic schools. She started teaching at the former St. Joseph School and eventually moved to Holy Family.

Schrant regularly has in her class what she calls "grand students," children of her former students.

The mother of one of those students nominated her for the Hays Post Teacher of the Month.

"I had Mrs. Schrant when I was in the second grade, and still to this day, she is very special to me," said Ann Gottschalk, parent. "Justin is my last child at Holy Family, and for Justin to have Mrs. Schrant for his fourth-grade teacher, it made the year even more special. 

"Mrs. Schrant is one in a million. We are very lucky to have Mrs. Schrant at Holy Family. [She] is one of the best teachers around. She loves the kids and the kids love her. She treats each kid with so much love."

Schrant said her greatest challenge is to motivate kids who don't like school or who feel friendless to want to be at school every morning.

When the principal announces the students aren't going to have school, she teases her students, "You better cry. No cheering. You have to be sad that you're not going to be here tomorrow."

"Every year, I think this is the best year I've ever had," she said. "I can only think of two years out of the 40 that I thought, 'I don't think I can do this anymore.'"

The best advice she said has been given was from a principal who was nun. She told her never to quit teaching after a hard year, because you will always have that bad taste in your mouth.

"I have been lucky that I have had good year, after good year, after good year, and I'm still here," she said.

Schrant, 62, said she wants to keep teaching as long as she can continue to be effective with her students. She has no plans to retire any time soon.

She will spend her summer compiling some of the 500 pictures she has taken during the school year in a yearbook for just the students in her class, a project she has undertaken every year since 2006.

Schrant is already looking forward to the first day of school in the fall, which is her favorite day of the school year.

"I love the first day of school," she said. "[It's] new kids, new class, new opportunities, new starts, new beginnings," she said.

Teacher of the Month: Faith leads teacher through cancer, quarantine

Keeping
healthy is as vital as ever, and one of Hays' newest businesses, Exhale
Bodywork and Massage,&nbsp;2015 Vine St., hopes to help area residents feel their best by offering
massage with a holistic message.

Born
and raised, Hays resident Stephanie Calvery, owner,&nbsp;opened her shop in December, offering a myriad of
services that can help patients feel better without the need for pharmaceutical
intervention through massage and other alternative therapies.

"I
think more people are leaning toward wholistic care now, but I would like to
see a lot more of that happen, just because that is not always the answer, it's
not always the fix-all for everyone," Calvery said. "People that can
do more things naturally and not have the side effects of a pharmaceutical
regimen, they tend to feel better."

She
points to the ongoing opioid crisis as a prime example of how holistic medicine
can be a better option for pain management than pharmaceuticals.

"There
have been articles published about massage therapy and helping to fight the
opioid crisis because you don't need that numbing effect," Calvery said.
"What you need is to find what is causing the problem, get to the root of
it, and not put a Band-Aid on it.

"At
the same time, there have been some great studies done on therapy and
hypertension. It helps to lower the blood pressure; it helps with your vascular
system to open up more and not have the arteriosclerosis."

With
her services, Calvery hopes more people in the area can explore the benefits of
her services and natural wellness options in general.

"There
are just a lot of great benefits that our community is not fully tapped
into," she said. "And I would love to see our community finding these
answers that they would otherwise look to in a (prescription medicine) bottle."

At Exhale, Calvery said she sees a full range of clients
from ages 5 to 105 looking for various services, but pain relief is her most
common request.

"They want to be out
of pain," Calvery said.

And
now that many are venturing back to the gym as pandemic concerns lessen, pain
management is an essential addition to workouts.

"Starting
back at the gym, they are going to have what we refer to as DOMS, delayed onset
muscle soreness," Calvery said. "So, the day after or two days after
you do a hard leg day and you can't sit down, I'll have people come in, and we
will work to loosen those muscles and legs, or they will sit in the sauna and
just allow that heat to penetrate and loosen those muscles. So, getting back
and getting more active, you are going to be more sore, so my job is to help
relieve some of that pain."

While
the location is new, Calvery has spent the last few years training and working
locally and is a familiar face in Hays.&nbsp;

She
has worked as a massage therapist since 2017, working at a variety of
locations, including the Hays Med Center for Health Improvement.

But after years of work in
the field, Calvery decided it was time to expand at the end of last year.

"I
just decided it was time to grow," she said. "When you have your own
place, you're not constrained by someone else's ideals. So, I can take what I
want to grow this into and go on that path instead of what somebody else is
wanting."

In
2018 she completed a program at Fort Hays State University and studied&nbsp;Kinesio&nbsp;Taping,
Tai Yoga massage and Barefoot massage.

The
barefoot massage, she said, is the deepest deep tissue massage available, but
since the pressure is broad, it is without the sharpness of an elbow or thumb
used in other deep tissue massage styles.

She
also utilizes a wide arrange of tools like&nbsp;Gua sha&nbsp;stone scraping,
cupping and hot stones.

"All
of my sessions are customized to what the client needs," Calvery said.

Along
with the traditional cupping practice, she offers sinus cupping, which moves
lymphatic fluids out of the sinus cavity, creating relief for those suffering
from allergies.

"I've
had a lot of clients try that and they will leave here completely open and
draining," she said.&nbsp;

But
even with a variety of services, Calvery said relieving low back and shoulder
pain is her most frequent customer request.

"With
people sitting more at desks and they are kind of hunched over, that
contributes to the shoulder pain and also the low back pain," she
said.

Inside
Exhale, Calvery also promotes the use of her state-of-the-art sauna, which can
provide numerous health benefits.

"The
sauna has different settings on it," she said. "A lot of people are
coming in right now to use the weight-loss setting."

Calvery
also said it has been popular for pre-massage use.

In
the location she has some retail items available, including the essential oils
she uses on clients during sessions.

"One
is called raindrop therapy," she said. "That's a 45-minute session
that is basically just the use of 10 essential oils with light muscle work that
helps to relieve pain on the nervous system level."

Overall, has been pleased
with the overall positive response since the December opening.

"I
have been very blessed with new clients and old clients finding me again,"
she said. "It's just been really great."

New Hays business offering holistic pain relief

During the May meeting of the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254, Ms. Beatina "Tina" Nowak was chosen as the 2021 Daughter of the Year.&nbsp; Tina will be honored at the June 8 Mother/Daughter/Honor Activity and meeting. Nowak has been an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish for many years.&nbsp; Her involvement includes helping to clean the church, assist with coffee and donuts after mass, helping with funeral dinners, and currently is a Eucharistic Minister. As a member of Circle #254 of the Daughters of Isabella for the past 34 years, she has served as Banner Bearer, served on various committees, serves as honorary pall bearer at funerals of deceased members, and participates in the rosaries at the mortuaries. Tina volunteers at the ARC, attends bible studies, and is a Senior Companion.&nbsp; A few of the things Nowak enjoys doing in her spare time is going to volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and fast pitch activities that her grandchildren are involved with, as well as other school activities.&nbsp; She belongs to a card club and participates in adoration in the chapel two times per week. Nowak was married to Ted Nowak until he passed away after 40 years of marriage.&nbsp; They have three children — Kristi, John and Lisa. They had seven grandchildren, two of these grandchildren passed away shortly after birth. During the Mother/Daughter/Honors Activity on June 8, in addition to honoring Nowak, the club will be honoring six 25-year members, and two 50-year members.&nbsp; These members will be awarded pins showing their years of membership.&nbsp; The 25-year members to be honored are: Janice Arnold, Mildred Klaus, Ruth Lang, Jean Rozell, DeAnn Schmidt and Patricia Wolf.&nbsp; The 50-year members to be honored are:&nbsp; Dianna Leiker and Mary Staab.

2021 Daughter of the Year named by Hays organization

LANE COUNTY —A Kansas man died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Monday in Lane County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Nissan Rogue driven by Clarence E. Young, 81, Lakin, was westbound on Kansas 96 at eleven miles east of Kansas 23

The SUV left the roadway to the north, struck an embankment to a field access road, went airborne, rolled and came to rest on its passenger side.

&nbsp;Young was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Price and Sons Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Kearny County sheriff's office had issued a Silver Alert for Young earlier in the day.

LANE COUNTY —A Kansas man died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Monday in Lane County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Nissan Rogue driven by Clarence E. Young, 81, Lakin, was westbound on Kansas 96 at eleven miles east of Kansas 23The SUV left the roadway to the north, struck an embankment to a field access road, went airborne, rolled and came to rest on its passenger side.&nbsp;Young was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Price and Sons Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.The Kearny County sheriff's office had issued a Silver Alert for Young earlier in the day.

The City of Larned's water tower holds a special place in the hearts of its residents for its brilliant light display during the Christmas season. City officials recently launched a capital campaign on GoFundMe to aid in the restoration of this beloved tradition and raise enough to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/City-of-Larned-139334013384544/photos/pcb.788942248423714/788935435091062/" target="_blank">restore the lighting display and complete a full LED upgrade</a>.

"Many had the pleasure of growing up with this Larned tradition and we hope to give that same opportunity to current and future generations," a news release said.

Close to $23,000 has been raised in online and offline donations through the GoFundMe page so far.
