<a href="https://radio.securenetsystems.net/cwa/KJLS">LISTEN LIVE</a> Fort Hays State is the No. 3 seed in this week's MIAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, presented by Citizen's Bank and Trust, held at historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Tigers finished the regular season at 22-5 overall and 17-5 in the MIAA, just one game back of first place in the standings. They will face a 14-14 overall Missouri Southern squad that was also .500 in conference play at 11-11. Game time is set for 8:15 pm on Friday evening (Mar. 4). This is the sixth time the Tigers and Lions have met in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament, as FHSU owns a 4-1 record in the previous quarterfinal matchups. The Tigers have a 5-1 record overall against Missouri Southern in the MIAA Tournament, the only other meeting being in the 2011 championship game that FHSU won by six points. That is the only MIAA Tournament title the Tigers have won since joining the conference in 2006-07. The FHSU men have played Missouri Southern more than any other school in the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers went 7-2 in the month of February to threaten for the MIAA regular season title. The race came down to the final game of the regular season to determine a conference champion between FHSU, Central Oklahoma, and Northwest Missouri State. UCO and NWMSU ended up tying for the regular season title and FHSU finished one game back. With solid play throughout the regular season, the Tigers have earned their way into the NCAA Central Region Rankings. In the first release of the rankings, the Tigers were No. 6, but have been No. 7 in each of the last two releases. The Tigers are right on the cutline to earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament since Minnesota State-Moorhead won the NSIC Tournament and took one of the eight spots in next week's Central Regional field. MSU-Moorhead has not been in any of the regional rankings released prior to the conference tournaments. The Fort Hays State men are trying to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015-16. The 22-5 regular season record is Fort Hays State's best since producing that same record during the 2009-10 regular season. FHSU finished at 23-7 that season playing three postseason games (one MIAA Tournament and two NCAA Tournament games). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;continues to lead the Tigers at 15.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. With 920 career rebounds, he is 60 shy of the record held by Barton Snow (980). His 1,544 points ranks fifth in FHSU men's basketball history. He earned All-MIAA First Team honors for the second straight season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>, the 2021 MIAA Freshman of the Year, earned All-MIAA Second Team honors this season and adds 14.4 points and a team-best 3.7 assists per game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>, an honorable mention All-MIAA selection, gives the Tigers three players averaging double figures in scoring at 11 points per game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6462">Bjarni Jonsson</a>&nbsp;was one of five Tigers named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team this season. He has helped the sound defensive Tiger team to the best scoring defense in the MIAA and second-best in the nation at just 56.7 points per game. The Tigers won the only meeting with Missouri Southern in the regular season by a score of 89-71 in Hays on January 20. In the month of February, HaysMed reported a total of 52 COVID-19 inpatient admissions. Twenty-four of the 52 were Ellis County residents, and 29 of 52 were not fully vaccinated.

KDHE: Six new COVID cases in Ellis Co. since Wednesday

After an outstanding career at Hays High School, senior Gavin Meyers announced Wednesday he has committed to play football at Kansas State.&nbsp;

Meyers, who was also a standout wrestler — claiming his first state championship last weekend — was named to this year's Kansas Shrine Bowl and was a first-team all-state selection by the Kansas coaches.

He finished his senior season with&nbsp;124 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception. Meyers was named to the 5A All State defensive team as a linebacker.

SALINA — Starlet Parham, senior at Salina Central High 
School, received a Rudd Scholarship valued at $80,000 to attend 
Fort Hays State University.

“Starlet has always been a 
leader in my classroom by the example she sets with her hard work and 
integrity,” said Sheila Shaffer, science teacher at CHS. “Starlet has a 
wonderful work ethic and understands that learning involves many 
failures to find true success.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Starlet plans on studying 
psychology and pre-law at FHSU. She stays focused by keeping her eye on 
her end goal. “I tell myself that the big goal in the end can’t be 
completed without the little goals now,” explained Starlet. ”None of 
this would have been possible without my faith and trust that I endow in
 God. And for that, I am forever grateful and blessed.”

“Starlet 
is a tremendous asset to our Robotics team,” added Sheila Alstatt, CHS 
Robotics coach. “When she commits to a project, she stays at it until it
 is finished. I especially admire that she is a self-starter and can 
work independently on tasks.”

The Rudd Scholarship is a renewable,
 four-year program that covers any remaining cost of attendance after 
all other aid, grants and scholarships are applied to a student’s 
account. In January, 50 finalists were chosen from a large applicant 
pool of highly talented, accomplished Kansas high school seniors.

The final level of competition was an interview, after which Starlet was named one of 25 Rudd Scholarship winners across Kansas.

Salina student earns $80K scholarship to attend Fort Hays State

CHEYENNE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 5a.m. Friday in Cheyenne County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Peterbilt semi driven by&nbsp; Jacob Anthony&nbsp; Stevens, 30, McCool Junction, Nebraska, was northbound on Kansas 27 four miles north of the U.S. 36 Junction.

The semi traveled left of center, crossed into the southbound lane, entered west ditch and struck two concrete culverts.

EMS transported&nbsp; Stevens to the Cheyenne County Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

World Water Day is an annual observance focusing on the importance of water. To celebrate,
the City of Hays and the KSU Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds are once again
partnering to host a World Water Day Fun Fest on Thursday, March 17th from 10 a.m. to noon at Big Creek Crossing. 

This free event will feature fun, hands-on, "water-related"
activities for kids of all ages. In addition, educational information regarding water conservation
and water quality will be provided.

Curtis Wolf, KWEC director, will lead the Birdwatching 101 class.

The Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, where the KWEC is located, is well known as a birdwatching hotspot. There are more than 450 species of birds being documented in Kansas.

Wolf will talk about and demonstrate certain skills that can help even novice bird watchers improve their bird identification abilities. He also will cover bird field guides and binocular use.

No registration is required for the workshop, which is open to people of all ages.

Kansas Wetlands Education Center, affiliated with FHSU’s Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics, is located 10 miles northeast of Great Bend. KWEC to offer birdwatching workshop at Cheyenne Bottoms

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Missouri is filling a vital position in
 the area of academic 
leadership with the appointment of Timothy R. Crowley, Hays, as the Vice 
Provost for Academic Programs and Dean of Graduate Studies and
 Research. Crowley 
begins his new duties April 1.
 Crowley has 
served since June 2017 as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs at Fort
 Hays State 
University, where his duties have included curriculum management, 
serving
 as an accreditation 
liaison officer for the Higher Learning Commission,
 providing leadership 
for the Honors College, General Education Program, Center for
 Civic Leadership, and
 Credit for Prior Learning Program. He has also overseen
 department chair 
leadership development, program review, student success efforts,
 university strategic 
planning, and academic technology initiatives. “We look forward 
to Tim joining us at UCM. He is deeply experienced in academic 
leadership
 and is committed to 
collegial shared governance. His success in growing and supporting
 graduate programs, 
leading accreditation efforts, and implementing strategic plans

FHSU administrator to take leadership role at Missouri university

TOPEKA — Thirty-six projects have been selected for Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP) funding for the purpose of planning, constructing or rehabilitating public use general aviation airports.

KAIP receives $5 million annually through the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, known as IKE, and requires airport sponsors to share in the project costs by paying between 5% and 50% of the total project. The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation, which manages the program, considered 145 project applications this year with a combined total project value of over $78 million.

“The aviation industry brings $20.6 billion in total economic impact to the State of Kansas,” said KDOT Director of Aviation Bob Brock. “The KAIP program helps this important industry remain a vital part of the Kansas economy. That translates into jobs and quality of life for the residents of Kansas.”

The selection board identified $4,968,161 in projects to address the most impactful airport improvements across the state.

Northwest Kansas communities selected for funding, project and amount awarded include:

At last month’s Academic Excellence Awards recognition for FHSU athletes, nearly 100 percent of the men’s and women’s basketball teams were honored for having at least a 3.0 GPA during the spring 2021 and/or fall 2021 semesters. Hays Library hosts conversation with Ukraine expert

WaKeeney is hoping to welcome back the big screen.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A local committee has kicked off a pledge drive to raise $160,000 to build a new drive-in movie theater in WaKeeney.

Although WaKeeney at one time had a drive-in theater, it's been years since the community has had a movie theater of any kind.

The nonprofit raising funds for the project hopes to show both first-run and classic movies. Some theme nights are also planned.

Drive-ins used to be common across Kansas, but the advent of digital movies killed many of the small operations, which could not afford to invest in new equipment.

The nearest drive-ins to WaKeeney are in Kanpolis and Dodge City. Wichita, Kansas City and Paola are the only other remaining communities in the state with drive-ins.

Lynelle Shubert, director of Trego County Travel and Tourism, is a spokeswoman for the project. She said she thinks the drive-in will be a regional draw for the community.

"It's really about bringing entertainment to rural Kansas, and giving people in rural communities something to do on the weekends during the summer," she said.

Drive-in&nbsp; movies are undergoing a revival, she said, and she sees the WaKeeney project beings a destination attraction. 

During the pandemic shutdown, Garth Brooks and AC/DC offered concerts to drive-in audiences in lieu of live concerts.

"I think there are people who still want to go out and do something," Shubert said. "I grew up on drive-ins. When we had babies, we were broke. We didn't have any&nbsp; money, so we threw the kids in the back of the car and we went to the drive-in."

She said the committee has yet to set admission prices for the theater, but the consensus is to keep prices affordable for families.

Shubert said the site could be used for other events. The drive-in committee has already been contacted about using the site for a car show. Some drive-ins also use their sites for flea markets.

The drive-in will be recruiting non-profit groups to offer concessions. The groups will keep the proceeds. There will be a no alcohol policy.

"The movie theater is not set up to make money," Shubert said. "The movie theater is set up for quality of life for our community and the surrounding communities."

The land on which the drive-in will be built is south of Interstate 70 at&nbsp; exit 128, which is the east WaKeeney exit. Trego County owns the land. Whether that land will be leased or gifted to the nonprofit has yet to be determined, Shubert said.

The project has raised $4,300 plus $14,848 in pledges as of Monday. The committee just launched the pledge drive last month and also plans to apply for grants.

Once the money for the project is raised, construction should move forward quickly. Because of the topography of the land, little dirt work is expected.

A screen will be erected, as well as a projection building. Because there are no sewer lines in the area and to save on construction costs, the drive-in will use a restroom trailer, much like the bathrooms in a camper.

The committee would like to eventually build a small playground at the site.

If the theater would ever reach a point where it is making more money than is needed for the upkeep and operation of the theater, as a nonprofit, the organization could grant funds to other agencies in the community.

Shubert acknowledged the drive-in is a big dream. As an homage to this optimism, the committee has tentatively set "Field of Dreams" as the movie for its soft opening.

"This is truly an act of faith," Shubert said. ... "I'm a dreamer, I get that, but if you don't dream, nothing happens."

By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostWaKeeney is hoping to welcome back the big screen.&nbsp;&nbsp; A local committee has kicked off a pledge drive to raise $160,000 to build a new drive-in movie theater in WaKeeney.Although WaKeeney at one time had a drive-in theater, it's been years since the community has had a movie theater of any kind.The nonprofit raising funds for the project hopes to show both first-run and classic movies. Some theme nights are also planned. Drive-ins used to be common across Kansas, but the advent of digital movies killed many of the small operations, which could not afford to invest in new equipment.The nearest drive-ins to WaKeeney are in Kanpolis and Dodge City. Wichita, Kansas City and Paola are the only other remaining communities in the state with drive-ins. Lynelle Shubert, director of Trego County Travel and Tourism, is a spokeswoman for the project. She said she thinks the drive-in will be a regional draw for the community."It's really about bringing entertainment to rural Kansas, and giving people in rural communities something to do on the weekends during the summer," she said. Drive-in&nbsp; movies are undergoing a revival, she said, and she sees the WaKeeney project beings a destination attraction. During the pandemic shutdown, Garth Brooks and AC/DC offered concerts to drive-in audiences in lieu of live concerts."I think there are people who still want to go out and do something," Shubert said. "I grew up on drive-ins. When we had babies, we were broke. We didn't have any&nbsp; money, so we threw the kids in the back of the car and we went to the drive-in."She said the committee has yet to set admission prices for the theater, but the consensus is to keep prices affordable for families. Shubert said the site could be used for other events. The drive-in committee has already been contacted about using the site for a car show. Some drive-ins also use their sites for flea markets.The drive-in will be recruiting non-profit groups to offer concessions. The groups will keep the proceeds. There will be a no alcohol policy."The movie theater is not set up to make money," Shubert said. "The movie theater is set up for quality of life for our community and the surrounding communities."<figure>

TOPEKA — The Attorney General’s Office will mark National Consumer Protection Week with free document destruction events throughout the state, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced.

“Our office works hard year-round to protect consumers,” Schmidt said. “Next week, we will place a particular focus on helping Kansans protect themselves from identity theft and stay safe from scams.”

The office will sponsor free document destruction at 10 locations throughout the state from March 7 to 12, which is National Consumer Protection Week. Securely shredding personal documents is an important step toward preventing identity theft.

In Hays, free document destruction will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive.&nbsp;

This phrase used to seem like a cautionary warning but the last two years have transformed it to have a feeling more like a judgmental, “I told you so.” Events I had only read about in history books like a global pandemic, racial unrest as part of the fight for civil rights and the start of war in Europe are actually happening. Bad things happen in the world every day but this has felt heavier and closer. Six degrees of separation is a theory that any two people on earth can be connected to each other through the network connections of six or fewer people. This theory has been around since the 1920s and has shown up in pop culture as the subject of plays, movies and even a game featuring Kevin Bacon as the speculated most connected person in the entertainment industry. I have often thought that in the agriculture community we could cut the number of degrees in half. Maybe we are friendlier or there are just less of us, but I could give example after example of how small our world is and the interesting places I have meet people with whom I share a first or second social connection. For example, less than six months ago, I was traveling with Kansas Farm Bureau’s Casten Fellows program, learning about how farmers in the Baltic states have worked to build their businesses, infrastructure and knowledge over the last three decades after gaining independence from Russian occupation. Farmers we met on that trip have close family and friends who are in Ukraine and willing to fight for their freedom. That’s two degrees of separation for me. All of the people we met in the Baltics, who are thriving under their own sovereignty, know they will be a future target if the Ukraine falls to Russia. Then it would be just one degree of separation. That is why it feels so close. People I know or that know my connections are fighting a war. Not because they volunteered to help, but because invaders burst into their homes trying to rob them of their independence. Power, greed, hatred, disagreement and control are some of the most unfortunate motivators within human nature because they lead to separation, struggle and conflict. War is a dreadful and often repeated reality brought about by these motivators. With war just a degree or two away, the struggles and conflicts of our everyday lives seem to lessen a little in light of all the things we already have and the ways we universally alike. We all want to be safe, healthy, connected. War does none of these things but making new connections, sharing our lives and being good to each other reduces our degrees of separation and brings us all closer together. The world gets smaller and better with every connection we make. Hold your loved ones closer, reach out to friends and strangers to connect to the world around you, and continue to pray for the families in Ukraine and their connections all over the world.

First Call for Help is sponsoring its second annual Photo Frenzy fundraiser.

Strike a pose on Saturday, March 5. Select your team of up to four people, hop in the car, and get ready to make memories for a good cause.

Deadline extended for First Call For Help Photo Frenzy fundraiser

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported just one COVID-19 cluster in western Kansas as of Wednesday.&nbsp;

KDHE on Wednesday reported 239 active COVID clusters in the state, accounting for 7,081 cases, 84 hospitalizations and 70 deaths.&nbsp;

The only western Kansas cluster identified by KDHE was Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs with five cases.

A cluster is defined as a location that has five or more cases of COVID-19 with symptom onset in the last 14 days.&nbsp;
