150th Avenue bridge over I-70 closed in Trego County

&nbsp;When Ed and Mary Hammond think of home, Hays and Fort Hays State University come to mind. As an investment in our community and FHSU students, the couple is leaving half of their estate, a more than seven-figure gift, to Fort Hays State University.

The couple announced their generous gift at a news conference on Fort Hays State’s campus Friday with a large crowd in attendance.

As the longest-serving Fort Hays State University President, Ed Hammond oversaw a period of incredible growth and created many recognizable programs during his 27-year tenure. Ensuring the university’s success, he was forward-thinking in establishing a robust university scholarship program, FHSU Online (previously known as the Virtual College), and forming international partnerships, to name a few.

Ed Hammond recognized the symbiotic relationship between FHSU and the community. Not only because of the university’s tremendous economic impact but also because local businesses are labor-dependent on Fort Hays State students. Even today, he firmly believes that FHSU’s success provides the foundation for a growing and prosperous Hays community.

Mary Hammond grew up in Hill City, and will never forget how crucial Fort Hays State was in setting her mom, Dorothy, up for success as an educator. As a high school freshman, Mary Hammond vividly remembers how dedicated her mom was to earning her college degree, driving 50 miles to and from Hill City to Hays each day. Because of the tremendous impact FHSU had on her family’s life, Mary Hammond has stayed involved with the university, helping in any way she can. She serves as a Director of Development for the FHSU Foundation – fundraising for the College of Education, of which she and Ed are passionate supporters.

To honor their community and family, the Hammonds chose to divide their estate gift between two FHSU scholarships: the Dr. Edward H. Hammond Endowed Scholarship and the Dorothy and Dwayne Sprenkel Education Scholarship.

The Hammond Endowed Scholarship supports junior and senior student leaders with financial need. 

“Our intent is to financially free up their time to use their leadership skills to better the university,” Ed Hammond said. This endowed scholarship was created by the Half Century Club members at FHSU in 2014 to recognize Ed Hammond’s presidency.

Mary Hammond’s dad passed in 2001, and her mom in 2021. Though she wishes her parents were still on this earth to see the impacts of the newly created Dorothy and Dwayne Sprenkel Education Scholarship, she’s proud that their names will forever live on at FHSU.

The advisory was issued because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for Smith County Rural Water District 1, Smith County

A <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/h7hzhe-house-fire?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_content=control1&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer">GoFundMe account </a>has been established for a family who lost their home in a fire on Wednesday in Hays.

Zachary and Misty Schmidt lost their entire house, possessions and pets in a trailer fire at 1010 Reservation Road in Hays.

No one was home at the time, but three family pets did not survive. The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental.

At about 1:58 p.m. Wednesday, the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire in a manufactured home at 1010 Reservation Road in Hays.

Arriving, fire crews found flames coming from the front and rear patio doors. Fire crews deployed two attack lines to extinguish the fire, and it was eventually brought under control.

Afternoon winds added to the fire spread. Crews stayed on the scene for several hours to ensure that all hotspots were extinguished.

Grady DeLange established the GoFundMe account. As of Friday morning, $175 had been raised toward a $10,000 goal.

GoFundMe established for family who lost home in Wednesday fire in Hays

Tia Miller, child care provider, said she loves to do crafts with the children in her care, have neon dance parties, and play in the water in the summertime.

Miller, 27, owner of Miles of Smiles Day Care in Hays, has been an in-home child care provider since 2018.

She was nominated by Polly Pfeifer as January's Child Care Champion.

"She goes above and beyond to keep the kiddos safe while giving them great experiences in her care!" Pfeifer said.

Millers started working in early childhood education right out of high school in the Early Childhood Connections program. She worked there for three years and earned her Child Development Associates.

"Right out of high school I knew that's what I wanted to do," she said.

She has always had the goal of being an in-home child care provider.

"I want to be able to raise my own kids but also share my passion with other people's children," Miller said. "It's nice to be your own boss, and I love seeing all the kids hit their different milestones. You get attached to the kids. I don't know what else I would see myself doing."

Child care is a family affair for Miller. Her sister is also a provider in Hays and so was her aunt.&nbsp;

Miller focuses on preparing children for kindergarten, including working on fine and gross motor skills and recognizing their names. She also teaches the children sign language.

Miller's&nbsp; 3-year-old son is autistic and nonverbal. She and her family have been learning sign language so they can communicate with him.&nbsp;

Now all the child care kids sign, Miller said.

"Even with the little ones, 12 to 18 months, who don't have their language, they can sign to let me know. It has been beneficial to all of us," she said.

One of the children's favorite activities is dance parties. Miller closes the curtains, cranks the music, turns on laser lights and the kids dance out all their energy before nap time.

Miller said she loves maintaining friendships with the children and families she has had in day care.&nbsp;

"I'm still super close to the families even after the kiddos graduate," she said. "[I like] watching the kids grow."

She said she gets to be the one steady person in these children's lives who is always there.

"I let them know they can always be comfortable around me and to not be scared," she said.&nbsp;

As a mom, she never wants the parents who use her child care to worry about their kids.

"I want them to know their child is safe with me and that they are loved," Miller said. "I want them to know I love their children like my own."

Miller sees herself as a very empathic person and she tries to teach that to the children in her care. Her family has four cats and two dogs. She teaches the children to care for the animals and be gentle with them.

"I have a little girl and the first thing she wants to see is the kitties," Miller said. "It teaches them to be gentle and caretakers."

Miller tries to help the small children learn about their feelings and how to appropriately deal with them when they are mad or sad.

Miller said one of the most challenging aspects of being a child care provider is arranging time off. She said it is very difficult to find substitutes.

Her husband, who is licensed, works as a substitute but she is forced to close when, in some instances, the family has to go out of town. She said she tries to give her family as much notice as possible when she has to close.

Miller said child care is exhausting but rewarding.

"A lot of people don't realize how exhausting this job is physically and mentally," she said. "I'm constantly living in a world of overstimulation. It's constant chaos."

She urged people to appreciate their day care providers.&nbsp;

"We are a big part of their life," she said. "We are what keeps them being able to work and continue to live the life they want."

Growing up in WaKeeney, Dr. Buhrle participated in volleyball and track and field, with pole vault being her main track event.

Upon graduating from Trego Community High School in 2017, Dr. Buhrle continued her academic and track career at Fort Hays State University. 

She graduated from FHSU with her Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Performance in May 2021.

Her love of sports and desire to help others be the best they can prompted Dr. Buhrle to apply to physical therapy school.

She was accepted into the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth and graduated from there in December 2023 with her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

College athletics foster school spirit, community pride, and a sense of belonging among students, alums, and fans. Beyond camaraderie, participating in college sports promotes physical activity, wellness, discipline, and teamwork skills, enhancing the overall collegiate experience.

Athletic scholarships often make higher education accessible for talented student-athletes who excel in their respective sports. Additionally, successful athletic programs generate revenue and elevate a school's visibility, attracting prospective students and strengthening alum engagement.

Amid the multifaceted landscape of college athletics, the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) plays a pivotal yet often overlooked role. Appointed by and reporting to the president, the FAR is a crucial link between the institution, athletic department, and the NCAA, ensuring compliance, academic integrity, and student-athlete welfare.

Carrie Hielman, FAR at UVA, observed that two things are true: Most people don’t know what the faculty athletics representative does, and every NCAA school has one. Only one person from each of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s more than 1,100 colleges and universities serves as the faculty athletics representative for their school, making it a unique role at each institution.

At Fort Hays State University (FHSU), the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) position has a rich history of esteemed individuals who have significantly impacted the university's athletic journey within the NCAA.

The Hays Police Department Special Situation Response Team will be conducting training in Crisis Intervention Response between 1 and 7 p.m. today.

This training will take place at 205 E. Seventh St. 

Police officers will be training with special tactical equipment. This training is being done with great care and safety.

Hays police training set for this afternoon

At the Kansas State University men’s basketball game on Monday, Landon Rozean of Hays made a layup, a free throw and a three-pointer in the Trifecta Challenge sponsored by the Kansas Insurance Department and Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt.

Rozean won $500 courtesy of the department and their educational initiative <a href="http://SmartInvestKS.com">SmartInvestKS.com</a>, a website aimed at helping Kansans make smart investment decisions. Rozean is a freshman at Kansas State majoring in mechanical engineering.

Hays K-State student wins $500 in basketball Trifecta Challenge

ELLIS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of a 5-month boy in Hays.

Just after noon on Tuesday emergency personnel were dispatched to the Roadway Inn - Room #206, 3404 Vine Street, Hays, for a child not breathing, according to a media release.

Hays Police Officers arrived after EMS and observed EMS staff performing CPR on a 5-month-old infant.&nbsp; The child was transported to Hays Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. 

&nbsp;The death of the infant is under investigation by the Hays Police Department and the Ellis County Coroner’s Office. Police did not release the name of the child.

Anyone with information relating to the incident at the motel should call Detective J.B. Burkholder at (785) 625-1030.

Arriving fire crews found flames coming from the front and rear patio doors. Fire crews deployed two attack lines to extinguish the fire, and it was eventually brought under control. 

Afternoon winds added to the fire spread. Crews stayed on scene for several hours to ensure that all hotspots were extinguished.

No occupants were home at the time, but three family pets did not survive. The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental.

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT Hays Post Rain and snow last month, after weeks of dry conditions, had a serious effect on Ellis County roads, and now officials are looking into ways to improve the maintenance process going forward.

Following the winter storm early in January, Ellis County
officials say they received several phone calls concerning the condition of
roads in the county's rural area and, even more so, the residential subdivisions
outside the city of Hays.

Commissioner Nathan Leiker said the subdivisions have sprung
up since zoning regulations were altered in the mid-2000’s and updated in 2021.

The regulations aimed to conserve agricultural land in the
county. However, Leiker said subdivisions created more roads maintained by county
public works crews, and the commission has not increased the department’s
budget. 

“While we've changed the way the county has looked at it and promoted growth in these areas,” Leiker said. “We haven't promoted growth
on our public works to handle the influx of residents in these small areas.”

Leiker and the rest of the county commission tasked Public
Works Director Brendan Mackay to come up with ideas for ways to improve conditions.

Mackay said during the storm, the county paid 450 hours of overtime, and that did not include the time he spent working during those days. 

“We have almost 1,400 miles of roadway in this county, and
the guys are traveling seven miles an hour. We can't be everywhere,” Mackay
said. “Expectations exceeded what the county has funded for years past and what
we can do realistically with employees and equipment level.”

Mackey said they have seen staff and equipment
shrink due to budget cuts.

“You always want to do more with less, but we're at the point where there's no more we can do with the less that we have,” Mackey said. “We
have to expand if we want to improve our end product basically and improve our
services because we're stretched the limit right now.”

Leiker said he did not want to be critical of the past commissions who have cut funding for public works and said in recent years, they started to put money aside for bridge replacements and have started a fund to help with road maintenance.

Mackey said over the last three-plus decades, they have lost four graders to maintain the roads, all while adding additional roads that need to be maintained because of the subdivisions.

The commission was presented information on 14 subdivisions along with the unincorporated community of Munjor, where the public works department is tasked with road maintenance.

Mackey said while the subdivisions have not had a dramatic increase
in the number of miles maintained by crews, it does make it more difficult
because roads in the subdivisions have to be maintained differently.

“If there's one of those developments, that's four miles. It'll take us four hours easily to do those four miles because of the amount of
time you have to spend to reopen things and clear off in front of entrances and
driveways,” Mackey said. “So it may be only 20 miles that we maintain out of
all those developments, but it's like maintaining over 100 miles of county
roadways with the time requirement to do it.”

Some subdivisions maintain their roads, and
there is a possibility that future developments may also be required to do that.

But Mackey said part of the problem is that they currently
maintain those roads as they were built and will need to be upgraded. 

As part of the regulations, all roads built in rural Ellis
County must be built to standards set by the public works department.

But Mackey said he thinks some roads are going
to be improved, and that is going to take time and manpower.

He said some roads will need to be reworked with
the materials there, while some will need additional materials brought
in to fix the road.

Mackey will present the commission with his plans at the commission’s
retreat and a future meeting in March.

He said he plans to give them options for the beginning of the
process and then steps along the way.

“I don't want us to overshoot, and then we end up having to
overcorrect,” he added, “and then we want to make it fair and equal for
everyone.”

Among the ideas floated by Mackey and the commission was to hire another person to be in charge of the subdivision maintenance and add another piece of equipment responsible for those areas.

🎙  Ellis County searching for ways to improve rural road maintenance 

Grow Hays welcomes the public to the MicroFactory Grand Opening Ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13.

David Toland, Kansas Lieutenant Governor/ Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary, will be among those speaking. The 30,000-square-foot facility is at 3000 E. Ninth St., Hays. &nbsp;

The first-of-its-kind flexible lease space, MicroFactory is an incubator for small and startup manufacturing companies. The facility is designed specifically to meet the needs of manufacturers with various&nbsp;amounts of space allocated to tenants as needed.&nbsp;

"Grow Hays is working diligently to increase&nbsp;manufacturing opportunities in our community. The MicroFactory offers a fantastic facility for small and startup manufacturers giving them an appropriate space at a fraction of the cost of renting or constructing comparable space,"&nbsp;Grow Hays' Executive Director Doug Williams said.

The MicroFactory is a temperature-controlled facility, zoned I-1 light industrial. The all-inclusive rates start at $8 per square foot. Office rentals are $500 monthly with reduced rates if leasing a factory floor. The 30,000-square-foot facility is at 3000 E. Ninth St., Hays. &nbsp;The first-of-its-kind flexible lease space, MicroFactory is an incubator for small and startup manufacturing companies. The facility is designed specifically to meet the needs of manufacturers with various&nbsp;amounts of space allocated to tenants as needed.&nbsp;"Grow Hays is working diligently to increase&nbsp;manufacturing opportunities in our community. The MicroFactory offers a fantastic facility for small and startup manufacturers giving them an appropriate space at a fraction of the cost of renting or constructing comparable space,"&nbsp;Grow Hays' Executive Director Doug Williams said.The MicroFactory is a temperature-controlled facility, zoned I-1 light industrial. The all-inclusive rates start at $8 per square foot. Office rentals are $500 monthly with reduced rates if leasing a factory floor.
