Aquifer levels in parts of western Kansas that rely on groundwater for everything from drinking to irrigation fell more than a foot last year, Kansas Geological Survey scientists said Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Kansas Geological Survey earlier this month completed its annual campaign to measure the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/tag/ogallala-aquifer/">Ogallala Aquifer</a>, which supplies the western one-third of the state with water. The Ogallala, the largest underground store of freshwater in the nation, has&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/01/16/kansas-governor-proposes-another-30m-to-address-dwindling-water-supply/">been declining for decades</a>&nbsp;because of overuse to irrigate crops in otherwise arid parts of the state.&nbsp;

According to preliminary data presented to the Kansas House Water Committee, aquifer levels in the groundwater management area covering southwest Kansas fell by 1.52 feet between January 2024 and this month, a larger drop than the 1.43-foot decline the year before.

Western Kansas’ management area saw a half-foot decline, on par with the year before.

Northwest Kansas, which has been struggling with dry conditions, saw the aquifer decline 1.34 feet, a far more significant drop than the 0.47-foot drop between January 2023 and 2024.

The figures are preliminary. The Kansas Geological Survey’s official report will be out in a few weeks, said Jay Kalbas, director of the survey.

Each year in January, the geological survey — with the help of local partners —&nbsp;measures hundreds of wells across western Kansas to assess the decline of the Ogallala Aquifer. The effort takes them to remote parts of the state where they stomp through corn fields to get to isolated wells and measure them using steel highway tape.

This year, the surface of the water in one well was 485 feet.&nbsp;

“This is technically rigorous, difficult work,” Kalbas said. “It’s also physically rigorous and difficult work.”

The Ogallala Aquifer has been in decline since the mid-20th Century. After World War II, a boom in&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/01/29/agriculture-built-these-high-plains-towns-now-it-might-run-them-dry/">groundwater irrigation transformed arid western Kansas</a>&nbsp;into an agricultural powerhouse. But the aquifer refills far more slowly than farmers are draining it, leading to a gradual decline.

Parts of western Kansas where the aquifer is especially deep still have decades of water left, while others are near dry already.

State lawmakers have begun&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/13/time-for-a-reckoning-kansas-farmers-brace-for-water-cuts-to-save-ogallala-aquifer/">putting pressure on local groundwater managers</a>&nbsp;to make a plan to slow the decline.&nbsp;

But farmers don’t have to stop pumping groundwater to irrigate crops altogether, Kalbas said. The survey has developed estimates for how much producers need to reduce pumping to stabilize the aquifer.

Kalbas presented a graph showing farmers and other water users on one part of the aquifer needed to reduce pumping by 17.5% to stabilize the supply. Other parts of the aquifer might not need to cut back as much — or might need to reduce pumping even more.

“We don’t have to stop irrigating,” Kalbas said. “We don’t have to stop using our water. That resource is there for us to use. What we have to do, though, is define the specific amount of reduction that it takes…to achieve stability.”

A monumental $1 million gift from the Schmidt Foundation demonstrates strong support for the project.

While the Hays Arts Council leadership teams continue to pursue grant opportunities, community support is vital to reaching the campaign’s $3 million goal.

Hays Arts Council For the Heart of Hays Campaign continues

My name is Diane Schminke, and I’m an elementary school teacher of Sacred Heart Catholic School of Dodge City, Kansas. 

Over the past year, my family and I have experienced firsthand the exceptional care and compassion that HaysMed provides. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was terrified, but HaysMed immediately became a source of strength and hope for me. There was no question that I would continue my care here—their world-class experience and extraordinary team have made all the difference in my journey.

I travel over 100 miles one-way for my radiation treatments because I believe in the providers and the care I receive at HaysMed. This is not just about receiving care; it’s about trusting a team that makes me feel safe, supported, and deeply valued. From the moment I walk through the doors, every interaction reassures me that I’m in the best hands. The staff who greet me, the nurses who guide me, and the heartfelt doctors who patiently listen—they all create an environment where I can focus on healing.

When my breast cancer diagnosis came, it felt overwhelming. But the care and attention I received at HaysMed transformed that fear into confidence. My journey with breast cancer started with my annual well-women’s visit with Felecia Minyard, APRN at the HaysMed Dodge City Multispecialty Clinic, then soon after with a mammogram at HaysMed in Hays. 

When the imaging revealed something concerning, the staff went above and beyond. Knowing I was heading back to Dodge City, they managed to schedule advanced mammography the same day. Within 20 minutes, I was seen, and the swift action of the team gave me immense peace of mind. This commitment to patient-centered care has been a constant throughout my experience.

Dr. Issac Chambers, my HaysMed oncologist called me personally to discuss my treatment plan. He made sure my husband and children could be part of those conversations, so we were all informed and empowered. My treatment includes 20 radiation sessions—I’m currently on visit number three—as well as hormonal therapy for the next 5-7 years. Knowing I have this team beside me every step of the way makes the journey feel possible.

The compassion of the providers at HaysMed is unparalleled. Dr. Brandon Cunningham performed my lumpectomy, patiently explaining every detail and ensuring I felt cared for at every step. Sara, my nurse navigator, has been an incredible source of guidance and comfort as she guides me between the different departments and procedures. HaysMed radiation Physician Assistant, Teal Sander and Dr. Lyle Harrison have both provided outstanding support, always treating me with kindness and respect. They’ve all gone above and beyond to make sure I feel seen, heard, and cared for.

HaysMed’s care extends beyond just me. My husband, Eric, has faced significant health challenges, including COPD and heart issues, and the providers here have consistently delivered exceptional care for him as well. Dr. Gulraiz Cheema in Orthopedics, Dr. Kalyan Wagle in Cardiology, and the Pulmonology team have cared for him with the same warmth, compassion, and expertise that I’ve been fortunate to experience myself.

The personal touches at HaysMed set them apart. Whether it’s a staff member stopping in the hallway to offer assistance or a provider explaining complex medical terms in ways my family and I can understand, they consistently show genuine kindness and humanity. The portal has been an invaluable tool, giving us access to pathology reports and allowing us to communicate directly with our providers. As a family with many healthcare workers, including an ER nurse and a pharmacist, we deeply appreciate this transparency and accessibility.

Even as I balance my teaching schedule, HaysMed accommodates my needs, arranging appointments as the last of the day to minimize disruptions. Their efforts to coordinate with Felecia Minyard, APRN and the Dodge City Multispecialty Clinic have been remarkable, reducing our travel burden and making care seamless. The clinic’s staff responds promptly, works around pre-scheduled commitments, and ensures I’m never left waiting for answers or care.

PLAINVILLE - Heartland Regional Stockyards, Inc., in partnership with the Kansas FFA Foundation, is excited to announce the 3rd annual FFA Special Sale, set to take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the sale facility in Plainville.&nbsp;

The event will kick off with a weigh-up sale at 10:00 a.m., followed by a feeder calf and yearling calf sale beginning at noon. Farmers and ranchers attending the sale are invited to enjoy a complimentary meal, graciously served by area FFA members, immediately after the weigh-up sale.

Both buyers and sellers have the opportunity to support the FFA organization by donating $1 per head (or more) on their consignments or making a contribution of any amount. 

All proceeds will be divided between the Kansas FFA Foundation and a local Kansas FFA chapter chosen by the donor. Heartland Regional Stockyards will generously match all per-head contributions made during the event, effectively doubling the impact of every donation.

The idea for this special sale was spearheaded by Brandon Hamel and Lloyd Schneider of Heartland Regional Stockyards, driven by their commitment to strengthening Kansas FFA at both the state and local levels.

“The FFA stands out as one of the most impactful youth organizations for high school students today,” Schneider remarked.&nbsp;“Through agricultural education, the organization equips young people with essential skills for future success—public speaking, leadership, business acumen, and much more. At HRS, we’re thrilled to once again join forces with the Kansas FFA Foundation for the 3rd annual special sale.”

In its commitment to supporting the mental well-being of students from pre-kindergarten through college, the FHSU College of Education will present the Olliff Family Educational Symposium Tuesday, Feb. 4. This virtual event will be from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The symposium will feature a keynote address by Hotep, disruptive innovator and Congressional award-winning author, widely known for his proactive, “tough love” approach to education. 

Titled “Building Bridges Through Positive Engagement,” the presentation explores how, in struggling schools, negativity can often become the loudest voice in the room.&nbsp; When it does, the toxicity spreads throughout the entire building, creating a climate that is stricken with low morale and poor performance on all levels. This high-energy workshop will explain how this condition starts, why it persists and how to change it to bridge community&nbsp;involvement/ engagement.

Hotep, MBA, PMI, is a 15-year master teacher who has developed a reputation for requesting the most troubled students and transforming them into willing participants in their own education. 

Hotep is the founder of MAKE A WAY Consulting, where he helps schools across the U.S. create a climate of celebration and a culture of accountability. 

He is also the creator, writer and producer of the popular new anime brand, Black Lion and Cubs. Hotep’s profound work has earned him nominations for the Presidential Citizen’s Award and as a CNN Hero.

About the Olliff Family Educational Symposium:&nbsp;

The symposium began in 2017 and was later named after the Olliff Family in honor of the late Darel Olliff and his wife, Shirley. As a third-generation funeral director in Phillipsburg, Darel developed a passion for mental health. His son, Dr. Kenton Olliff – a long-time employee of FHSU – had worked with his dad for several years before going into teaching.

To ensure the symposium would be offered every year, Kenton committed in 2019 to financially support this important event along with his mother; his wife, Carol Solko-Olliff; and the Olliff family. Kenton, a licensed clinical professional and addiction counselor, is an associate professor of Advanced Education Programs at FHSU, where Carol is the director of International Student Services.&nbsp;

FHSU presents 'Building Bridges Through Positive Engagement' symposium

WASHINGTON&nbsp;–&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jerry Moran – chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs – on Tuesday issued the following statement after receiving confirmation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that there are no VA programs impacted by the federal funding pause:

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $67,000 or less, persons with disabilities and taxpayers whose preferred language is not English. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.

Many factors can affect refund timing after the IRS receives a tax return. Although the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills. Some returns may require additional review and may take longer.

With an IRS Online Account, people can:• View key details from their most recent tax return, such as adjusted gross income. •&nbsp;Request an Identity Protection PIN.. Get account transcripts, to include wage and income records. •&nbsp;Sign tax forms like powers of attorney or tax information authorizations. • View and edit language preferences and alternative media. • Receive and view over 200 IRS electronic notices. •&nbsp;View, make and cancel payments. • Set up or change payment plans and check their balance.New scam alertTo help protect taxpayers against emerging threats, there’s a new banner on the Online Account homepage that alerts taxpayers of potential scams and schemes, along with a link to their Digital Notices and Letters page to view correspondence sent to them from the IRS. The feature helps to educate taxpayers on common scams and fraudulent efforts to steal taxpayer information and provide taxpayers with more ability to validate the legitimacy of IRS communications.Redesigned notices The IRS successfully redesigned 284 notices in 2024, exceeding the agency’s 200 notice goal. It is important to note that 200 notices were redesigned and deployed in 2024 and an additional 84 redesigned notices are in line to be deployed in 2025. All notices will be added to Individual Online Account so taxpayers receiving a specific letter can see it.Mobile-adaptive tax forms Taxpayers can now access 67 forms on cell phones and tablets. The most recent forms feature “save and draft” capabilities, which allow the taxpayer to start a form, save it and return to it later. The addition of save and draft allows for future capabilities, including the ability for multiple spouses to sign a form.Virtual assistants to help with refunds and other questions Whether a taxpayer uses an online tool or calls the IRS, they will experience upgraded help features. During filing season 2025, the IRS will offer voicebot services to all taxpayers calling the IRS for refund information. The voicebot is available in English and Spanish and has helped thousands of callers without the need to wait for the next available representative. Taxpayers will have to authenticate their identity to gain access to their refund information by providing select information from their tax return.Last year the IRS began using online chatbots for various functions. These chatbots use either guided help through choice buttons or an open text box for a customized question. The chatbots use natural language processing and understanding to interpret the input from the taxpayer to provide an appropriate response. To launch the chatbot, the taxpayer simply clicks on the “Chat” button in the lower right corner of the webpage. Currently taxpayers can use chatbots from eight webpages.
