Effective weed control is essential for Kansas grain sorghum producers to achieve strong yields. 

One of the best management practices for effective weed control is planting grain sorghum into clean, weed-free fields. Grain sorghum planted in a weed-free field, coupled with a strong residual program up front, will start strong and outcompete late-emerging weeds. Also, the chances of chemical weed control failures after crop establishment are higher if grain sorghum is established in an already weed-infested field.

In dryland production systems of western Kansas, conservation tillage is a common practice. 

This practice helps retain more soil water and increases crop residue on the soil surface, which supports crop intensification. Higher residue amounts also benefit soil health by reducing soil erosion from wind and water, improving soil organic carbon accumulation, and enhancing soil structure. Conservation tillage systems rely on herbicides for effective preplant management of existing weeds, making subsequent weed management strategies more effective.

Preplant herbicide options ahead of grain sorghum are limited, and atrazine has been the basis of most chemical weed control programs in Kansas grain sorghum.

 Some of the options available can be found below.

Atrazine can be applied as early preplant, PPI, PRE, and POST. It has some activity on grasses like foxtails, but is considered a broadleaf herbicide. It will control susceptible populations of kochia, pigweeds, morningglories, mustards, and ragweeds.

2,4-D. For preplant burndown applications, low-volatile esters are more effective in controlling weeds and are preferably used over amine formulations. But, sorghum can be injured by carryover from preplant 2,4-D. Therefore, growers should follow label guidelines.

Dicamba provides control of susceptible emerged broadleaves and has a moderate residual control of germinating weeds (pigweeds, wild buckwheat, and lambsquarters). Mixtures of dicamba (8 to 16 oz/a) and atrazine (1 to 2 pints/a) in early spring are good options for kochia control.

Glyphosate provides a broad-spectrum control of glyphosate-susceptible weeds present in the field. Glyphosate resistance is widespread in the state, and the herbicide is often mixed with 2,4-D or dicamba for a broader spectrum and increased control.

Sharpen provides control of many broadleaf weeds like common lambsquarters, marestail, mustards, nightshade, Palmer amaranth, redroot pigweed, wild sunflower, and velvetleaf.

Gramoxone can only be handled and applied by certified applicators and is a nonselective, nonresidual contact herbicide often used for preplant burndown of weeds.

Reviton is a new group 14 (PPO-inhibiting) contact herbicide developed for nonselective broadleaf and grass weed control or suppression when applied to actively growing weeds.

Group 15 herbicides. Residual control of weeds that have not emerged can be achieved by including a Group 15 herbicide with a burndown application. S-metolachlor (Dual Magnum, others) can be applied up to 45 days before planting seed treated with Concep III safener. Similarly, if safened seed is used, acetochlor (Warrant, others) or dimethenamid-P (Outlook, others) can be applied. Products that contain pyroxasulfone (Zidua, others) are not labeled for use in grain sorghum.

A Hays man was arrested after allegedly attempting to kiss a woman inside Dillons.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said officers responded to a report at 7:44 a.m. Sunday at the grocery store, 1902 Vine St.

Scheibler said the 19-year-old woman pushed 49-year-old Carlos J. Johnson away due to his unwanted advances. He said Johnson was a stranger to the victim.

After the incident, the suspect exited the store and began leaving the parking lot. He was arrested shortly afterward.

Johnson was booked into the Ellis County Jail on a requested charge of sexual battery.&nbsp;

The Fort Tavern and Patio Bar in Hays announced it will close, and the facility has been sold to a new owner.

The Fort posted on Facebook today, "Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout the 4+ years we’ve been open! We have sold the business to an owner with a slightly different vision. 

"If you have any gift cards, now is the time to use them, and if you’ve enjoyed the VR, axe throwing or bowling, please come see us before May 19.

"We will be taking care of any bookings from now until May 19 as usual. All other reservations after that will need to be communicated with the new owner! Thank you all again for the wonderful years we’ve been here!"

Fort Hays State University (FHSU) has signed an agreement with DUNIS Africa to launch a cross-border academic program in Dakar, Senegal, beginning in Fall 2025. 

The cross-border program, fully taught in English and blending the expertise of local faculty with FHSU professors to deliver an education that meets rigorous American academic standards, will enable students to earn an accredited FHSU degree without leaving West Africa. This initiative represents a major step in expanding high-quality, globally recognized education in the region.

The collaboration between FHSU and DUNIS Africa builds on a long-standing partnership dating back to 2017. 

This ongoing partnership currently allows students to complete two years in Senegal before transferring to FHSU to finish their degrees. The new cross-border program takes this a step further, allowing students to complete all four years in Senegal. 

DUNIS Africa will deliver the first two years of coursework starting in Fall 2025, with FHSU taking over instruction for the final two years beginning in Fall 2027. The program will offer a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business and Economics, expanding educational opportunities for African students.

Dr. Jeni McRay, assistant provost for Internationalization and Strategic Initiatives, and Dr. Phil Wittkorn, Global Affairs Academic Partnerships director, traveled to Dakar to attend the official launch ceremony on January 15, 2025. The event was attended by senior officials, including representatives from the Senegalese government, the U.S. Embassy in Senegal, and prominent business leaders.

"This partnership is not just about education—it's about making a meaningful impact," McRay said. "From FHSU to DUNIS Africa, we're creating a world of opportunity for students to thrive together."

During their visit, McRay and Wittkorn also met with U.S. Ambassador to Senegal, Mike Raynor, to discuss how the program will enhance educational access and strengthen economic collaboration between the United States and Senegal. They reaffirmed FHSU's commitment to developing engaged global citizens and making American higher education more accessible and affordable.

"Our partnership with DUNIS-Africa is Fort Hays State University's mission in action," McRay said. "We are making degrees accessible and affordable, allowing students the opportunity&nbsp;to develop as an engaged global citizen leader. When they graduate, they are prepared for real-world challenges as they enter the workforce and contribute to their local communities."

"This new remote-completion option will be transformative for students who cannot relocate to the United States due to financial, family, or visa constraints," said Amadou Diawara, a current Fort Hays State student working to complete his MBA degree as part of the original DUNIS partnership.

Diawara began his higher education journey in 2017 with DUNIS Africa, where he discovered the partnership with Fort Hays State. After moving to Hays in 2019 and managing to complete his Bachelor of Business Administration in the fall of 2020, Diawara went on to deepen his practical skills through internships at marketing agencies and refined his expertise in digital strategy and campaign execution. He also co‑founded two Web3 startups, WeTrust (an agricultural crowdfunding platform powered by Bitcoin) and Deevy SAS (an NFT marketplace), while consulting for Senegalese entrepreneurship networks, incubators, and associations to sharpen his leadership and project‑management abilities.

"The FHSU-DUNIS partnership has had a profound impact on both my academic and personal journey," Diawara said. "As an undergraduate student, it gave me the opportunity to study in a truly international environment that combined academic excellence, personalized support, and cultural exchange.”

The expanded partnership between Fort Hays State and DUNIS Africa will provide opportunities for more students like Diawara to receive a world-class education that makes an impact no matter where they choose to study and live.

Fort Hays State launches cross-border program in Senegal with DUNIS Africa

 The City of Hays is seeking public input through a concise, five-question survey regarding the use of fireworks within city limits.

City leaders aim to understand residents’ views amid increasing popularity of personal-use aerial fireworks and rising concerns about fire safety during drought conditions.

City Manager Toby Dougherty emphasized the importance of resident feedback in guiding the City Commission's discussions on fireworks policies.

“As aerial fireworks gain popularity, we need clear insights from residents about their experiences and concerns,” Dougherty said. “This feedback will be pivotal in shaping discussions and potential policy adjustments in the coming months.”

Currently, the city's fireworks policy allows the sale and use of common fireworks from July 2 through July 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., unless suspended due to adverse weather conditions or safety concerns. The survey is designed to quickly gather essential information from residents on their opinions about maintaining or adjusting this policy.

Fire officials highlight that ongoing drought conditions elevate the risks associated with fireworks.

Increasingly dry and warm conditions raise concerns about potential fire outbreaks, underscoring the urgency of this community feedback initiative.

Completing the survey takes only a few minutes, providing city leaders critical data to assess whether current guidelines adequately address community safety.

TOPEKA — Building a new house in today’s market doesn’t yet mean extra dollars for lumber or manufactured wood products, but Kansas building supply managers warn that tariffs have driven up other construction costs.

While on-again, off-again tariffs on Canadian timber are currently off, Kansans should prepare to pay more for just about everything else in the house, they said.

“You take the hardware and the millwork portion of our business, and we’re getting daily price increases because a lot of that product is imported from China, some from South America,” said Jay Robinson, manager of Wichita’s Mill Creek Lumber and Supply Co. “The import steel business has been affected. It’s up about 15 to 18% over the last 45 days, and we’re getting pretty much daily price updates. Fasteners, nails, screws, products for building connectors, have all seen 20 to 25% price increases.”

Hardware, like doorknobs and door hinges, is up 20 to 25%, he said.

Travis Daniels, general manager at McCray Lumber and Millwork in Topeka, agreed.&nbsp;

“It’s hardware items. It’s things that are not manufactured domestically or from Canada, because so far, the Canadian government, the American government, keep flexing their muscles, and nothing really has happened yet,” he said.

In fact, Robinson said, lumber right now is at the lowest price it’s been in several years.

“The framing lumber composite is actually back to where it was in 2023,” he said, a price drop that he attributed to Canadian producers and American companies shifting as much product across the border as they could in anticipation of tariffs.

But Daniels said he is concerned that Canada’s recent election, which gave Mark Carney the Liberal Party win, might have an impact on lumber.

“I’m concerned that may be setting us next up on a collision course,” he said. “I think that’s how he got elected, because he said he’ll draw the hard line against the Americans. The thing is, Canadian lumber does have some other places they can export to.”

The construction industry will closely watch the tariff situation, said Sean Miller, executive officer of the Kansas Building Industry Association. It’s important that Canadian lumber and concrete from Mexico continue to be exempted from tariffs, he said.

“Canada is the source of upwards of 80% of our lumber, so that’s a huge issue for the homebuilding industry in particular,” he said. “There is a 14.5% tariff on lumber, pretty consistent through the last couple of administrations. That lumber was exempted from any additional tariffs at this time, and that’s really critical for us.”

Miller said possible supply chain disruptions are also a concern.

“We’ve seen so much, starting really with COVID, and it’s never really come back the way we would have liked it,” he said. “That can really impact us.”

As an example, he said electrical transformers can be challenging to source for larger developments, such as 20- or 50-house projects.

“The ability for Evergy or your local electric partner to get the right amount of transformers really got limited during COVID, and it has not come back the way we would have liked to,” he said. “Electric companies have worked really hard to make sure those things are staged and ready.”

Robinson said tariffs have the potential to hurt the cost of projects that are in the works or already started, but most builders won’t be affected because they learned hard lessons during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I would say pretty much 99.9% of all the builders we deal with have language in their contracts for increases due to market conditions,” he said. “A lot of builders took some pretty serious hits back in ’21, ’22, during the COVID run, when lumber prices doubled. They were not protected.”

“Unfortunately, the end user is the one that’s bearing the brunt of all these tariffs,” Robinson added.

As the politics of tariffs and interest rates play out, Daniels said there’s no way to quickly bring manufacturing back to the United States.&nbsp;

“If you’re a believer that the trade imbalance with these other countries has been tremendously unfair, not America’s favorite for years, it’s not going to fix quick,” he said. “It’s going to be interesting times.”

Robinson said he believes American lumber companies could potentially manage the country’s housing starts.

“What we’re seeing right now are curtailments with the prices as soft as they are — the mills are actually cutting production back because they’re over produced,” he said. “I’m going to say that our domestic production on framing and lumber commodity products can sustain about 1.2 to 1.3 million housing starts annually, and that’s pretty close to where we’re at today.”

Robinson said he is less familiar with what it would take for the country to keep up with hardware needs in construction, but he said that part of the industry is “heavily reliant” on imports.

RUSSELL — "Sod and Stubble," the motion picture based on the classic pioneer story, has come to theaters across the nation and on this Friday, May 9 it will premiere at the Dream Theater in Russell on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and at 2 and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

"Sod and Stubble" tells the story of the Ise family who homesteaded in Osborne County Kansas in the 1870s and battled through the many challenges of homesteading on the Kansas plains. The original story was written by John Ise in the 1930s with the help and remembrances of his mother Rosa Ise. In the 1990s, Von Rothenberger added over 150 pages of additional text to the new release. 

Now, the story of Henry and Rosie Ise comes to life on the screen through the work of an award winning cast and crew.

The film features Bailey Chase (Longmire, Homestead), Dodie Brown (American Horror Story), Barry Corbin (Lonesome Dove, No Country for Old Men), Mary McDonough (The Waltons), Buck Taylor (Yellowstone, Tombstone, Gunsmoke), Darby Hinton (Daniel Boone, Texas Rising), Rudy Ramos (Yellowstone, High Chaparral), Wyatt McCrea, R.W. 'Sod and Stubble' comes to Dream Theater in Russell this weekend

A former HaysMed oncologist has opened a new practice in western Kansas.

Dr. Robert Rodriguez, medical oncologist, and Amanda Volchko, advanced practice provider, started seeing patients two weeks ago through their practice, Western Kansas Oncology Group, serving Oakley, Tribune and Goodland.

The practice is based in Tribune but works with all three critical-access hospitals in those three communities. The practice offers in-person visits as well as telemedicine.

The practice is accepting new oncology and hematology patients.

Rodriguez treats cancer patients and blood cancer patients, but under hematology, also treats patients with noncancerous anemia or low platelets, which can happen as a result of interactions with medications or aging.

Rodriguez received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Kansas. He did his residency and fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He spent an additional two years at the medical center before moving to western Kansas to work for HaysMed, where he worked for just less than 10 years.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/a05ca048-415e-412f-bcea-55ff325a76b9">Rodriguez was one of two former HaysMed doctors who sued the hospital, arguing the noncompete clauses&nbsp;in their contracts, which would have kept them from practicing within a 110-mile radius of Hays, were too restrictive.</a>

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/057d44cb-ad96-4aab-951d-a71a18cbee0a">&nbsp;The doctors and hospital came to a resolution through meditation, but the terms of that agreement were kept confidential.</a>

Volchko was born and raised in New Jersey. She trained in Philadelphia before a recruiter hired her to work in Hoxie. Rodriguez met Volchko while working in Hays, and she expressed an interest in working with cancer patients.

"My No. 1 directive at this point is to bring treatment locally," Rodriguez said. "In my time at my previous employment, everyone had to come to our location, come to Hays, come to the University of Kansas."

"We're trying to keep people as close to home as possible. Our primary directive is to get as much of that care done locally as possible, including cancer evaluation, chemotherapy administration, and diagnostic imaging and labs. "

Rodriguez said getting treatment close to home makes a "huge" difference for cancer patients.

"If you can imagine any time someone has to get systemic treatment for a malignancy, it's not the best day of their life," he said. "Even when you do it 100% correctly, it still takes a toll on the person."

Bringing care closer to patients means they don't have to drive hours for care. That is physically better for the patient.

"It helps emotionally," Rodriguez said, "and it really does help financially. Sometimes funds are limited. These treatments are expensive."

Patients rarely come for treatment alone. Rodriguez said local treatment results in less stress for the family members and friends who are assisting the patients.

"The fact that we come to them is greatly beneficial and so appreciated by everyone I have worked with in these first few weeks," he said.

Because there are no cures for the diseases that Rodriguez treats, an oncologist aims to extend life and enhance quality of life.

"In the end, we're trying to buy people more time to live their life, to be with friends, family, and experience things they love," Rodriguez said. "The less time you spend with me, the better. The less time you have to spend traveling, even better than that. We're trying to have our cake and eat it too, where they still get the excellent care they would receive somewhere like the University of Kansas."

He also wanted patients to know he will be their doctor.

"Whether Amanda [Volchko] sees you or not, I am the one making those final plans. I will be making those plans even if I'm on vacation or if it's in the middle of the night, I will be your person," Rodriguez said.

He said he will also work with other physicians as needed, adding that through his experience, he's made many connections with other doctors across the state.

Rodriguez, who is a Goodland native, said he and his wife, who is a Larned native, wanted to stay in western Kansas and give back to rural communities.

"My desire had always been to go back and help the people that helped me," he said. "I didn't get to this place alone. I had excellent teachers and a community that shaped me into the person I am today. I have a sincere desire to help them."

The practice's appointments are filling fast. The Oakley clinic is full through July. Rodriguez said he wanted to thank the community for supporting the practice thus far.

"I'm really excited to get this project going," Rodriguez said. "It's been a dream of mine since graduating from medical school. It's finally happening, and the support that I have received from the community has been nothing but spectacular. I look forward to the rest of my career doing this very thing."

Former HaysMed oncologist opens new practice in western Kansas

Boot Hill Casino & Resort announces Fort Hays State University scholarship program

Few embody the spirit of resilience and innovation like Honesty Beaton, a senior Computer Science major at Fort Hays State University (FHSU). A first-generation college student from Wichita, Honesty’s educational journey is a tribute to her determination, a shining example of what can be achieved when passion meets opportunity.

From an early age, Honesty was a tech-savvy problem solver who was always ready to tackle any technology-related challenge. It was this natural inclination towards technology that sparked her interest in the field of computer science, eventually guiding her to FHSU.

"I didn’t think college was an option until my high school advisor, Cammie Kennedy, encouraged me to explore it," Honesty recalls. After her initial visit to Fort Hays, she was drawn to the friendly and supportive atmosphere of the campus, where she felt a sense of belonging.

As she navigated her college experience, Honesty faced obstacles common among many of our students. Balancing two jobs while managing her coursework was no small feat, yet she found solace in the strong support networks at FHSU. Friends from freshman orientation became lifelong companions, while dedicated peers and mentors boosted her confidence and encouraged her to reach new heights.

One pivotal moment in Honesty's FHSU journey was participating in a course on "Video Game Creation." Under the guidance of Dr. Gordon Carlson, Honesty and her team developed a game from scratch, sparking a passion within her for programming and design. This course honed her technical skills and opened doors to exciting research opportunities. Dr. Carlson recognized her enthusiasm and invited her to collaborate on a year-long research project called Realtime Video Underlay, culminating in a presentation about the project at the 2024 Faulkner Challenge—a milestone Honesty never imagined when she began her college career.

Her accomplishments didn’t stop there. As one of the first undergraduate Student Mixed Reality Developers at the Institute for New Media Studies, Honesty was at the forefront of technological innovation on campus, working alongside her peers to tackle complex problems.

"FHSU encourages exploration and creativity," she notes. "I've had the chance to work with augmented reality, virtual reality, and projection mapping, ideas that expand our understanding of technology’s impact on education and society."

Honesty’s future is bright and filled with promise. She plans to graduate in December 2025 with her Bachelor of Science degree and transition into an FHSU master’s degree program in cybersecurity and a new role as a Graduate Research Assistant with the Institute. She also plans to gain real-world professional experience as a data engineering intern at Centene, a Missouri-based healthcare solutions company.

As Honesty reflects on her journey, she acknowledges the challenges and the invaluable lessons learned along the way. "College will test you in ways you never expect." She emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with a supportive community. "Making&nbsp;mistakes is okay; it’s about the passion, effort, and support that turns uncertainty into achievement."&nbsp;

Her experience isn’t just a personal triumph; it serves as a larger narrative about the FHSU experience. The university is a model of innovation and support, where students like Honesty are empowered to pursue their dreams. As FHSU continues to thrive and adapt to the changing landscape of education, it remains steadfast in its mission to nurture talent and creativity.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University is recognizing five outstanding Kansas teachers with its High School Science Teacher of the Year Award.

The award highlights and rewards inspirational and impactful high school science teachers throughout the state.&nbsp;

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/biology/">Biology</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/chem/">chemistry</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/geology/">geology</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.phys.ksu.edu/">physics</a>&nbsp;faculty members in&nbsp;K-State's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/">College of Arts and Sciences</a>&nbsp;selected the recipients based on student nominations.

Students majoring in those programs were asked to name the teachers who inspired them to study science or made a difference in their growth and development, said&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/geology/about/faculty-staff/current_faculty/Brueseke.html">Matthew Brueseke</a>, professor and interim head of geology. The nominees were then invited to apply, and a committee selected the awardees.

The following teachers have received the 2025 Kansas State University High School Science Teacher of the Year Awards: • Biology: Emily Myers, Olathe West High School,&nbsp;Olathe, and Kristi Roberts, Scott Community High School,&nbsp;Scott City. • Chemistry: Dunia Harmison, Riley County High School,&nbsp;Riley. • Geology: Heather Daerr, Garden Plain High School,&nbsp;Garden Plain. • Physics: Jennifer Hendrix, Dodge City High School,&nbsp;Dodge City.

"High school teachers deserve much more recognition than they get for their exceptional work," said&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/chem/about/people/faculty/aakeroy/">Christer Aakeröy</a>, university distinguished professor and chemistry department head. “The preparation they provide students is critically important to the prosperity of the state and to the educational and scholarly mission of our university.”

The award recipients, their nominators and a few of their current students were invited to a recognition luncheon April 25 at the Manhattan campus. Each teacher was presented a $500 cash award, a certificate and an artistic piece of glassware custom-made by the chemistry department’s scientific glassblower, Jim Hodgson. The visitors also received lunch and a personalized tour of the campus and some laboratories.

"We wanted to acknowledge the extraordinary high school educators who inspire students to go into sciences and recognize all the hard work they do even through challenging times," said&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.phys.ksu.edu/about/people/faculty/bolton.html">Tim Bolton</a>, William and Joan Porter professor and physics department head.

"We are grateful for the many gifted high school science teachers across Kansas who provide a critical foundation for students who go on to pursue physical and life sciences degrees at&nbsp;K-State,” said&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/biology/about/people/faculty/ungerer/">Mark Ungerer</a>, director of the Division of Biology.
