Three-day weather outlook

WAKEENEY — A couple in WaKeeney has turned a crumbling nursing home into a beautiful Airbnb with a coffee bar, and bar and grill.

The former nursing home,&nbsp;320 South Ave., WaKeeney, was built in 1970 and closed in 2017. The inn is conveniently located right off Interstate 70 at the west WaKeeney exit

David and Tami Green, partners in the business, said the building was in very poor repair when they and a partner bought the property.&nbsp;

Pipes had frozen and burst in the building, ruining the ceiling. The original hospital tile was also still in place.

What guests will find today is nothing reminiscent of the building's past. The couple aimed for an 1860s Western feel. The tile was taken up, and the floors were refinished. David estimated they removed 15,000 tiles from the building.

Tami used antiques and thrifted furniture to decorate the rooms. One room has a sink stand made from an old, solid-wood school desk. 

They used wood from an old gym floor on one of the suite's walls.

"If you purchase things new, things are so high," David said.

The Morning Rose coffee shop's condiment table is an antique pie safe. The safe still contained old deeds from a former owner, and Leann Dexter thought it best to leave the historical documents where they were.

The tea and water canisters are set on an antique kerosene stove, which still has its original glass fuel bottle.

The Greens took mahogany doors from the building to construct the bar in Rosie's Bar and Grill. The back of the bar includes a lighted mirror framed by ornately carved wood. Tami said they wanted to give the restaurant the feel of an 1860s gentleman's club.&nbsp;

The Prairie Rose Inn opened in December with 16 rooms. This includes singles with queen beds, doubles and larger family suites with three queen beds.

The owners remodeled the physical therapy room into a suite with a kitchenette.

The names of the rooms were all taken from towns that once existed in Trego County.

Leann Dexter manages the Morning Rose coffee shop at the inn. Dexter is a transplant to Trego County, but she said she loves the community.

She grew up on a guest ranch, and that's where she picked up her cooking skills.

The shop offers espresso and associated drinks as well as homemade breakfast seven days a week.

From 6 to 7 a.m., the shop offers coffee and pastries. From 7 until close at about 11 a.m., breakfast is served. The shop opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday but closes later on those days.

The coffee shop even opened on Christmas and was packed, Dexter said.

She said her from-scratch biscuits and sausage gravy, made with half and half, has been a hit. She also makes a German breakfast casserole with sausage, brioche French toast, eggs Benedict, crepes, and waffles in addition to standard breakfasts like bacon and eggs.

"[I do] pretty much anything and everything," she said. "If someone wants something special, I say OK. ... I don't do oatmeal."

She runs regular specials, especially on holidays and Sundays.

There's limited seating in the coffee bar, but ample table seating in the adjacent lobby.

"I think it is nice that we can do something like this for the community," Dexter said. "The people here have been so wonderful."

Rosie's Bar and Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The grill will offer appetizers as well as chicken-fried chicken, hamburgers, steak sandwiches plus a daily home-cooked meal special such as lasagna.

The inn has a small conference room that could also be used for meals for larger families. There is also outdoor patio seating with an additional bar.

Rosie's offers full bar service with a selection of beers on tap. A selection of Shiloh Vineyard wine, based in Trego County, also will be offered.

The inn also has a laundry facility open to guests. The public dog park is across the street, as well as a<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/db7a80a1-cc4c-4370-ad64-8749848b4c75">n out-of-service F-14 Tomcat that is on loan to the city.</a>

"We are trying to get people to come to WaKeeney and stay as a destination," Tami said. "That was one of our main goals."

Single rooms cost $100 per night to $160 for suites.

Asking this question can reduce the risk of cancer for the whole family:

Radon is a radioactive, colorless, and odorless gas that occurs naturally in soil. Outdoors, radon levels are low because they are diluted. However, in our homes, radon levels can build up and increase our risk of developing lung cancer. Radon enters our homes from the soil through cracks in concrete floors and walls, floor drains, sump pits, etc. If the concentration of radon is increased, your family may be at risk.

The Surgeon General warns that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking, and it is the #1 cause of lung cancer in Kansas for nonsmokers. When you breathe in radon, it gets trapped in your lung tissue and gives off radiation that damages cells. Over time, this compound effect can cause lung cancer.

Homes with high radon levels have been found in every state, and radon levels can vary greatly in each home. In fact, your neighbor’s level can be very different from your own home’s level. According to the KDHE Kansas radon map, the average radon level is at least 4.6 pCi/ L which leads to 1 in 4 Kansas homes having high radon levels. Barton and Ellis Counties are both in the red with averages of 4.0 pCi/L or more.

The good news is that testing your home for radon is simple and affordable. Short-term radon kits are available in both the Hays and Great Bend extension offices for $7.50 or you can order online from Kansas State University at:<a href="https://sosradon.org/purchase-kits"> https://sosradon.org/purchase-kits</a>

KZ Country Cheesy Joke of the Day 01/05/24

After an absence of two years, Hays' band Dangerously Biased makes a comeback.

The Hays-based band is set to make their return Jan. 13 at Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering, 2350 E. Eighth St.

Dangerously Biased &amp; Friends at Rose Garden Hall will feature Aether, Thunderbird Hotel,&nbsp;Tree Kitty and Black Cat J.

Bassist and vocalist for Dangerously Biased, Matt Isley, has been playing music since he was in high school.

He performed with different bands before working alongside drummer and vocalist for Dangerously Biased, Sutton Thompson.

Isley and Thompson performed two shows every weekend for months in 2021 before taking a break lasting over two years.

"We were ready to work on other aspects of our lives,"Isley said.

Thompson has since moved to Wichita, providing a challenge for the two-piece rock band to practice.

"It'll be every couple of weeks when we meet up and practice for an hour or two," Isley said.

After discussing the idea of organizing a concert with Aether and Thunderbird's guitarist, Hugo Hernandez, Isley felt inspired to re-enter the music scene.

"That conversation was an opportunity to set a goal and try to make something happen," Isley said.

Songs that Dangerously Biased will perform at the concert include "Whisper," "Jailbreak Maria Ross," "Same As I Once Was" and "I Saw It All."

"We play modern rock. It's not really heavy music but rock music with palatable vocals," Iskey said.

Iskey said he expects a big turnout and is excited yet nervous at the same time.

"It does help that it's a Hays show, and we know mostly everyone involved," he said. "It will be fun to reconnect with the scene after such a hiatus."

Future projects are in the works for Dangerously Biased who will remain in the music scene following their return.

"We have music that hasn't been recorded yet and music that is currently being written. It's a work in progress," Isley said.

Guitarist Hugo Hernandez performs with Aether and Thunderbird Hotel, both out of Dodge City.

Hernandez was originally part of a band with Orlando Galvan, who serves as the vocalist for Aether and Thunderbird Hotel, before the band disbanded.

"Orlando and I have been friends for a long time," he said. "We used to be in a band called Guns on Mars, but eventually they broke up, and we wanted to keep doing music."

The two would start a band together, Aether, enlisting bassist Chris Clark and drummer Alex Rodriguez.

"Aether is my main project. We're a hard rock band with a more modern mainstream radio rock like&nbsp;Chevelle or&nbsp;Deftones," Hernandez said.

The four-man band will be performing original song titles such as "Blue Pill," "Cheat Code" and "Make Me."

Thunderbird Hotel is Hernandez's second band, which he started with his brother, Alonso Carranza and drummer Dwight Imel.

"Alonso wanted to play and get involved in the music scene," Hernandez said. "We got him a bass, and we started writing music together."

Initially meant to be a three-man band, Thunderbird Hotel would introduce Galvan as their vocalist.

"Thunderbird is a mesh of other bands because we all play in different bands," Hernandez said.&nbsp;

Songs that Thunderbird will be performing include "Thin, "Queen of the Radio" and "Complacent."

"'Complacent'&nbsp;is more of a laid-back alternative jam Orlando wrote," Hernandez said. "It was originally an acoustic song, but we decided to make it a band song, and it came together really nicely."

Hernandez said both bands continue to practice and are confident about their upcoming show.

"We're feeling pretty good about it. We're getting in a couple more rehearsals, so we're as tight as we can be when performing," he said.

Tree Kitty is the second band performing that is based in Hays.

Guitarist and vocalist Ryne Timken proposed the idea of creating a band with Ian Lewicki and Zach Martin as he was set to perform at an upcoming show in 2018.

"He asked the rest of us if we wanted to be in a band so he didn't have to do the gig alone, and it took off from there," Martin said.

Lewicki serves as the bassist and vocalist for Tree Kitty, while Martin takes on the role of the drummer.

Martin has been in the music scene since the fall of 2012, playing in various bands and maintaining his involvement in different musical projects.

"Over the last five years, I've filled in for four to five bands as the drummer," he said. "I'm currently active in two bands, Tree Kitty and another band called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Billyfromkansas">Billy</a>."

Martin said that he would characterize Tree Kitty Music as not adhering to any specific style.

"It usually comes out in more punk fashion or psychedelic experimental," he said.

The trio will be performing songs such as "Comatose," "Creamy &amp; Delicious" and "Millville."

The group is determined to achieve the goals they've set for themselves in the new year following months of being less active than usual.

"We're trying to write more and get new material out because we've been playing the same stuff for the last couple of years," Martin said. "We want to start working on getting another album out by the end of the year."

Black Cat J is a band based in Wichita featuring Johnny Gamero as the only member who entered the music scene at 15 years old.

Gamero went through three different bands with various members before forming his own due to time restraints.

"I got tired of having to figure out people's schedules so I decided to be a one-man band," he said.

Gamero drew inspiration from other solo performers, admiring their capacity to deliver performances independently.

"Being in a union and seeing how other people do it all by themselves is impressive to me so I decided to try it out," he said.

Black Cat J's music is similar to '50s and '60s music with the influence of punk rock and horror.

"I love horror movies so I like to base my work off the horror genre," Gamero said.

Through his multitasking abilities, Gamero will perform songs such as "Witch's Cell" and "Vampirine Sk8ers."

"I play the drums with my feet while also playing the guitar and singing," he said. "It's really easy to get the band members together because it's just me."

Having experienced the demands of being a one-man band, Gamero recognizes the challenges that come with it and has joined another band called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555011429008">Ghost Town Strays</a>.

"I finally got some people that want to be in a band with me," Gamero said. "I'm excited to be in a full band again and have two projects."

The concert begins at 7 p.m. as Black Cat J is scheduled to go first followed by Tree Kitty, Thunderbird Hotel, Aether and Dangerously Biased as the finale.

Dangerously Biased &amp; Friends at Rose Garden also celebrates the 40th birthday of Marshal Anderson, event planner and longtime friend of several band members who will be part of the performance.

Attendees of all ages are invited for a fee of $10, excluding those aged 12 years and younger. Food and beverages will be available.

Eighth St.Dangerously Biased &amp; Friends at Rose Garden Hall will feature Aether, Thunderbird Hotel,&nbsp;Tree Kitty and Black Cat J.Bassist and vocalist for Dangerously Biased, Matt Isley, has been playing music since he was in high school.He performed with different bands before working alongside drummer and vocalist for Dangerously Biased, Sutton Thompson.Isley and Thompson performed two shows every weekend for months in 2021 before taking a break lasting over two years."We were ready to work on other aspects of our lives,"Isley said.<figure>

 </figure>Thompson has since moved to Wichita, providing a challenge for the two-piece rock band to practice."It'll be every couple of weeks when we meet up and practice for an hour or two," Isley said.After discussing the idea of organizing a concert with Aether and Thunderbird's guitarist, Hugo Hernandez, Isley felt inspired to re-enter the music scene."That conversation was an opportunity to set a goal and try to make something happen," Isley said.Songs that Dangerously Biased will perform at the concert include "Whisper," "Jailbreak Maria Ross," "Same As I Once Was" and "I Saw It All.""We play modern rock. It's not really heavy music but rock music with palatable vocals," Iskey said.Iskey said he expects a big turnout and is excited yet nervous at the same time."It does help that it's a Hays show, and we know mostly everyone involved," he said. "It will be fun to reconnect with the scene after such a hiatus." Future projects are in the works for Dangerously Biased who will remain in the music scene following their return."We have music that hasn't been recorded yet and music that is currently being written. "We used to be in a band called Guns on Mars, but eventually they broke up, and we wanted to keep doing music."The two would start a band together, Aether, enlisting bassist Chris Clark and drummer Alex Rodriguez.<figure>

We're a hard rock band with a more modern mainstream radio rock like&nbsp;Chevelle or&nbsp;Deftones," Hernandez said.The four-man band will be performing original song titles such as "Blue Pill," "Cheat Code" and "Make Me."You can follow Aether on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/aetherdc">Facebook</a>.Thunderbird Hotel is Hernandez's second band, which he started with his brother, Alonso Carranza and drummer Dwight Imel."Alonso wanted to play and get involved in the music scene," Hernandez said.  </figure>"Thunderbird is a mesh of other bands because we all play in different bands," Hernandez said.&nbsp;Songs that Thunderbird will be performing include "Thin, "Queen of the Radio" and "Complacent.""'Complacent'&nbsp;is more of a laid-back alternative jam Orlando wrote," Hernandez said. "It was originally an acoustic song, but we decided to make it a band song, and it came together really nicely."Hernandez said both bands continue to practice and are confident about their upcoming show."We're feeling pretty good about it.  </figure>Lewicki serves as the bassist and vocalist for Tree Kitty, while Martin takes on the role of the drummer.Martin has been in the music scene since the fall of 2012, playing in various bands and maintaining his involvement in different musical projects."Over the last five years, I've filled in for four to five bands as the drummer," he said. "I'm currently active in two bands, Tree Kitty and another band called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Billyfromkansas">Billy</a>."Martin said that he would characterize Tree Kitty Music as not adhering to any specific style."It usually comes out in more punk fashion or psychedelic experimental," he said.The trio will be performing songs such as "Comatose," "Creamy &amp; Delicious" and "Millville."The group is determined to achieve the goals they've set for themselves in the new year following months of being less active than usual."We're trying to write more and get new material out because we've been playing the same stuff for the last couple of years," Martin said. Just as 2023 was kicking off, Cattleman's Steak House announced they would be opening a location in Hays in addition to their Liberal and Sublette locations.&nbsp;The cafe offers comfort food favorites, such as chicken-fried steaks, meatloaf, pot roast, hamburgers, salads and steaks and has quickly developed into a staple for many area residents.

In June, an argument outside of a bar in Hays ended with one man dead and another jailed.&nbsp;Larry Braun was allegedly killed by Keith Ostrom, leading to a grand jury indictment charging Ostrom with voluntary manslaughter, criminal discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and endangerment.

In October, Hays resident Bryn Green sued the Kansas&nbsp;Board of Cosmetology in order to offer sugaring,&nbsp;an ancient grooming technique that uses a mixture of sugar, lemon juice and water to safely remove unwanted hair without obtaining an occupational license with the assistance of the Kansas Justice Institute.&nbsp;

Hays felon arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

In March, Hays Police responded to a domestic disturbance finding a victim with multiple stab wounds. Collin Micheal McMillin would later be arrested on charges of attempted murder.

In June, an unnamed suspect allegedly drove inside Gross Memorial Coliseum on the Fort Hays Campus, causing significant damage. A vehicle matching the description later drove onto train tracks near the university and was struck by a train.
