Since 2005, the John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days have been an annual celebration of the scholarly work of Fort Hays State University students, faculty and staff. The work is shared among colleagues and with the public.

This year's event is April 29-May 3 at several locations on campus. <a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/research/events-and-opportunities/sacad/">Online content</a> will be available the entire week.

&nbsp;A special open house will be May 1 for on-campus exhibitions, including:

The event is open to all academic disciplines.

Included in the presentations are traditional posters, art and creative works, musical performances, applied technology projects, and an opportunity to meet published authors, which is new this year.&nbsp;

Morgan Steele, criminal justice program assistant professor, said  scholarly and creative activity encourages critical thinking, innovation, collaboration and leadership.

"We have so many outstanding researchers — faculty members and students — who are doing really fascinating, impactful work in their areas," Steele said.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Research is important, he said, because there are so many things we don't know.

Students doing research come from different backgrounds and experiences, while many faculty come from around the world. All have a unique perspective.

"There are things we are learning just now. It's always a good thing to keep pushing, not just yourself as an individual but in your field as a whole," he said.

Poster information will be archived permanently in the&nbsp;<a href="https://scholars.fhsu.edu/sacad/" target="_blank">FHSU Scholars Repository.</a>

The <a href="https://www.haysmemorial.com/obituary/John-Heinrichs">late John Heinrichs </a>was a popular FHSU geosciences professor, department chairman, and internationally known Arctic researcher who launched the original Research and Creative Activities Week.&nbsp;

Research and creative activities are 20% of the job requirements for FHSU faculty.

"A lot of people don't know what we do at Fort Hays. Being able to see why we do what we do and how we go about doing it is really just going to be such an important thing for everyone in the Hays community to see," Steele said.&nbsp;

The Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, in collaboration with CVBs in Wichita, Abilene, and Dodge City, recently launched the Gunsmoke Trail – a road trip that takes visitors through towns that were mentioned in the hit show of the same name.

Gunsmoke, the Emmy award-winning primetime Western, entertained audiences for 20 years. The show still runs on select networks, with iconic characters telling the story of frontier life in the Old West.

“This collaboration is a win-win for all of our communities,” said Melissa Dixon, Executive Director of the Hays CVB.

“The Gunsmoke fan base is looking for nostalgic Old West experiences that we already have in place, so we just had to make a connection with that audience.”

The Gunsmoke Trail is easily accessible through a mobile “passport” program which allows smart phone users to check in at different stops, earning points for prizes. The passport functions like a mobile app but requires no app download.

🎙 Post Podcast: USD 489 discusses Autism Awareness Month

Tickets are on sale now for the eighth-annual Brews on the Bricks in downtown Hays.

Several changes have been made to this year's event, said Julie Rider, Downtown Hays Development Corporation executive director.

The location has moved, she said, but not far.

For the past seven years, Brews on the Bricks has been held on 10th Street on the west side of Main Street.

"A lot of apartments have opened on that side, so it's a little harder to block that street," Rider said.

"Now that we have the beautiful Downtown Pavilion, our board decided to move the event to that beautiful structure and take advantage of some of the wonderful features available to us at Union Pacific Plaza."

Since the event is on a Saturday during the downtown market season, the starting time has been moved back to later in the afternoon.

"Previously, we got underway at 12:30 p.m. This year, our Brews and Bites VIP guests will be allowed to enter at 3:30 p.m. to take advantage of the first tastes and the shorter lines for that first hour and a half."

A new VIP lounge with special foods will also be accessible during the event.

VIP guests will also have access to a safe ride home courtesy of Diamond Luxury Limos.&nbsp;

The Chamber in Hays, Kansas regrets to announce the postponement of the highly anticipated Legislative Coffee event initially scheduled for April 6.

Due to the anticipated late session of the Kansas Legislature April 5, the event has been rescheduled to take place on April 13 at 8:30 a.m. at the Hays Public Library, 1205 Main.

Sarah Wasinger, President and CEO of The Chamber, said postponing the event keeps our legislators from having to drive through the night after the session to make the event.

“The safety and well-being of our participating elected officials is a top priority for us,” Wasinger said. “With the Kansas Legislature expected to convene into the late hours, we felt it was imperative they do not have to make a dangerous, very late-night drive."

Wasinger extended her gratitude to the premier sponsors, The Hays Daily News and Midwest Energy, for their unwavering support. During the event, along with area legislators, attendees will have the chance to hear updates from U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas.



Kansas Sen. Rick Billinger, R-Goodland; Kansas Rep. Ken Rahjes, R-Agra; and Kansas Rep. Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, also plan on attending.
