As 146 years of tradition dictate the last weekend in July, the Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration (NHEC) will be held Thursday through Sunday, July 25th - 28th, 2024.&nbsp; This year's theme invokes our love for family and fully displays the excellence and accomplishments that our ancestors and current descendants have made over the past 146 years.

The four-day Homecoming begins on Thursday; the evening is set aside for the annual meetings of the organizations supporting&nbsp; Nicodemus:&nbsp; NHEC LLC., National Park Service, Nicodemus Township Board, Nicodemus Historic Landmark District Association, Kansas Black Farmers Association’s quarterly meeting and Nicodemus Historical Society will host “Meet and Greet Beans and Jeans”.&nbsp; The public is welcome.

Friday morning starts with the FREE Cowboy Breakfast, hosted by the family of Freddie and Ivalee Switzer.&nbsp; Activities throughout the day include the Live Family Tree, individual Stories From The Stage, a Sunshine Story Teller by “Ina Buckner-Barnette” and late-night Karaoke.

Saturday, our contributing partner, the Kansas Black Farmers Association, will sponsor the 5K Run/Walk and the complimentary Pancake Breakfast.&nbsp;&nbsp; At 11:00 AM, is our crowd favorite, the Official 146th Homecoming Emancipation Celebration Parade.&nbsp; The National Park Service will discuss Brown v. Board of Education (1954), recognizing the 70th anniversary.&nbsp; Other afternoon activities include a Fashion/Talent Show, Watermelon Feed, Inspirational Dance by Patricia Fuller, and Gospel Soul singing.

🏀 - Saturday Afternoon Special Youth Event: Team Hollywood Celebrity Streetball presents its famous 3 on 3 basketball tournament.&nbsp; Featuring Team Hollywood's very own former LA Lakers player Clay Johnson #34 in person with his NBA Championship Ring.

🎹 - On Saturday night, Enjoy the Lawn Chair Concert with Denver Headliner Ron Ivory and Miles Apart Band.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, our contributing partner, Nicodemus Historical Society, will show the short film “Robert and Billie” on the big screen, followed by the documentary “Ellis Trail To Nicodemus.”&nbsp;&nbsp; On Friday Only Cris Cricitiello will be in person to sing “In the Sweet By and By” at 6:45 PM.

Friday and Saturday our “Kids Corner” is full of activities to teach our history and entertain our young ones.&nbsp; On Saturday, The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will be on-site for play.&nbsp; Sunflower Health Plan sponsors this Mobile Museum.

Sunday, Homecoming winds down with our traditional church service, Pastor Ordainment and Community Dinner at the Nicodemus First Baptist Church and the Township Hall.

Don’t forget to visit our food vendors.&nbsp; A variety of food choices have been selected so enjoy the delectable “Tastes of Nicodemus”.&nbsp; 

Also, checkout our non-food vendors for some unique shopping and different finds.

During all four days of celebrating, we have fun associating with friends and family, playing games, dancing, eating good food, and listening to music by DJ Storyteller broadcasting throughout the park.&nbsp; Come Experience the Nicodemus Homecoming!

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Hays area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®&nbsp;on September 21 at Fort Hays State University Quad (East side of Memorial Union). The Walk site opens at 9:00 a.m., the Promise Garden Flower Ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. and walking begins immediately following the ceremony.&nbsp;

“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said Leigh Purdy, Walk Committee Chair. “We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”

On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. During the ceremony, walkers will carry flowers of various colors, each color representing their personal connection to the disease.

Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Kansas, there are more than 54,500&nbsp;people living with the disease and 89,000&nbsp;caregivers.

Interview with Bonita Oliva Written by Robin Hardman

October 12, 2024 marks the date for the Inaugural Nicodemus Township History Trail Bike Tour and Bonita Oliva who lives in Rural Woodson is looking forward to this debut event. Bonita became aware of the event when her long-time friend, Angela Bates, started picking her brain, trying to learn from a biker's perspective what makes a good bike ride.&nbsp; Bonita has ridden thousands of miles in the United States and other countries so she knows a thing or two about biking.

Bonita became interested in riding while watching participants in the 2000 Bike Across Kansas (BAK).&nbsp; She was immediately hooked and began her riding career at almost 60 years of age.&nbsp; She met a group of ladies who were also riding BAK and they quickly became known as the "60s Chicks”!&nbsp; 

Bonita experienced a near fatal bicycle crash that would have deterred most people from getting back on the “saddle".&nbsp; In her first BAK 2001, Bonita "clipped" the rear tire of another rider while “drafting" or following closely.&nbsp; This contact sent her into oncoming vehicle traffic and Bonita was airlifted to Wichita with multiple fractures and internal injuries.Bonita has completed BAK many times.&nbsp; She has also traveled the Eastern United States touring the Florida Keys, Erie Canal and she says the best ride was touring the Finger Lakes.&nbsp; Her longest ride was from Santa Fe, New Mexico to New Franklin Missouri which included 1,050 miles of the Santa Fe Trail.

Along with U. S. tours Bonita has traveled and ridden in Buenos Aires, over some of the Andes, Patagonia, Chili, Chiloe Island which is the second largest island in South America and where she felt her first earthquake.&nbsp; She’s also biked in Cuba.

Located in the Nicodemus Township Sign No. 3 at the Historic Baseball Diamond when asked what attracted Bonita to this ride, she had an endless supply of reasons with her Masters Degree and education in History.&nbsp; In the spirit of many natives, she considers Kansas to be a truly beautiful part of the country. The fact that the majority of the ride will be on dirt roads is appealing because it reduces traffic and allows the rider to enjoy the countryside and our abundant supply of hawks!

This ride in particular; however offers more than just scenery.&nbsp; It was carefully constructed to showcase the many historical markers explaining the history of Nicodemus and its founders.&nbsp; As a historical site, Nicodemus has a very unique history and Bonita knows that many descendants of the original settlers consider this area sacred as evidenced by the number who return for the annual Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration (NHEC), which happens to be the last weekend of this month, July 25 - 28, 2024.

While Ms. Oliva says she's slowing down (at a mere 81 years old) she could have fooled me.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bonita became aware of the event when her long-time friend, Angela Bates, started picking her brain, trying to learn from a biker's perspective what makes a good bike ride.&nbsp; Bonita has ridden thousands of miles in the United States and other countries so she knows a thing or two about biking.Bonita became interested in riding while watching participants in the 2000 Bike Across Kansas (BAK).&nbsp; She was immediately hooked and began her riding career at almost 60 years of age.&nbsp; She met a group of ladies who were also riding BAK and they quickly became known as the "60s Chicks”!&nbsp; Bonita experienced a near fatal bicycle crash that would have deterred most people from getting back on the “saddle".&nbsp; In her first BAK 2001, Bonita "clipped" the rear tire of another rider while “drafting" or following closely.&nbsp; This contact sent her into oncoming vehicle traffic and Bonita was airlifted to Wichita with multiple fractures and internal injuries.Bonita has completed BAK many times.&nbsp; She has also traveled the Eastern United States touring the Florida Keys, Erie Canal and she says the best ride was touring the Finger Lakes.&nbsp; Her longest ride was from Santa Fe, New Mexico to New Franklin Missouri which included 1,050 miles of the Santa Fe Trail.Along with U. S. tours Bonita has traveled and ridden in Buenos Aires, over some of the Andes, Patagonia, Chili, Chiloe Island which is the second largest island in South America and where she felt her first earthquake.&nbsp; She’s also biked in Cuba.Located in the Nicodemus Township Sign No. 3 at the Historic Baseball Diamond when asked what attracted Bonita to this ride, she had an endless supply of reasons with her Masters Degree and education in History.&nbsp; In the spirit of many natives, she considers Kansas to be a truly beautiful part of the country. The fact that the majority of the ride will be on dirt roads is appealing because it reduces traffic and allows the rider to enjoy the countryside and our abundant supply of hawks!This ride in particular; however offers more than just scenery.&nbsp; It was carefully constructed to showcase the many historical markers explaining the history of Nicodemus and its founders.&nbsp; As a historical site, Nicodemus has a very unique history and Bonita knows that many descendants of the original settlers consider this area sacred as evidenced by the number who return for the annual Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration (NHEC), which happens to be the last weekend of this month, July 25 - 28, 2024.While Ms. Oliva says she's slowing down (at a mere 81 years old) she could have fooled me.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The School of Agriculture’s Dean of Admissions was interviewing a prospective student. “Why have you chosen this career?” he asked. “I dream of making a million dollars in farming, like my father,” the student replied. “Your father made a million dollars in farming?” echoed the Dean, much impressed. “No,” replied the applicant. “But he always dreamed of it.”
