A local non-profit and a local bar are partnering to bring awareness to the role alcohol can play in rape.

<a href="https://help4abuse.org/">Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services</a> and the Sip'N' Spin in Hays are sponsoring the second-annual <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/962164371489507">Rock Against Rape</a> at 8 p.m. Saturday at the bar, 209 W. 10th in Hays.

The event will be open to anyone 18 and older. It will be 18 to enter and 21 to drink alcohol. Although last year many younger people enjoyed the event, some ladies in their 70s also attended.

The cover charge will be $5 for those 21 and older and $10 for those younger than 21. The majority of the proceeds from the cover charge will be donated back to Options, according to a representative of the bar.

The event will feature bands Parl, Free Minded, Cactus Collateral, Kuwabara and What Remains. All of the bands are from northwest Kansas, which is Options' service area, said Aniston Weber, Options campus advocate.

The bands all fit into the rock genre but will bring a diverse offering to the event, including rock/rap, pop and metal. What Remains is an eighties cover band.

The event will help advertise Options' Safe Bar training. The free 45-minute training helps bar employees, and owners recognize signs a predator may be trying to use drugs or alcohol to take sexual advantage of someone.&nbsp;

Workers learn how to safely intervene, and Options helps bar owners identify dark places or corners that predators may take advantage of in their establishments.

"No matter how much you drink, no one deserves to be sexually assaulted," Weber said. "Alcohol is not the cause of rape. Rapists are the cause of rape."

Jennifer Hekcer, Options executive director, said several area bars have taken advantage of the Safe Bar Training. However, she acknowledged turnover tends to be high in the industry.

She said the Options staff member are happy to present the training again for free to any establishment.

"It's a great training and also trains the bar staff on how to protect themselves from sexual harassment and unwanted sexual advances from customers. We know bar owners don't want people to be hurt in their bars," Hecker said.

Hecker said the training helps bar staff and owners keep rapists from weaponizing alcohol.

"Bars are a big part of a community," Hecker said. "It's where we go to celebrate. It's where we go to mourn. It's where we go to have fun and to connect. Rapists aren't welcome in those places."

Hecker said as long as the community does not shine a light on the issue, sexual assaults will continue.

"We have to talk about it in the light of day or in the light of the bar," Hecker said. "We need to destigmatize talking about sexual assault."

&nbsp;Weber, who often works with students, said Hays is known for its drinking culture, particularly on campuses.

"People are going to use the means they have to assault people if that is what their prerogative is, and I think making sure we stand firm against that is important."&nbsp;

Hecker encouraged bystanders if they see something to say something.

Event T-shirts are for sale now through Wednesday. Three Dog Night has had to reschedule its Salina performance.

Originally scheduled for May 18, the concert is now scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Tyler Dallis explores Native American imagery as well as connections with family and the loss of those connections in their MFA exhibit "Bloodlines."

The exhibit is on display now through May 11 at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art on the Fort Hays State University campus.

Dallis' focus is ceramics and photography, although they have created mixed-media sculptures as well.

"Basically, my show is about my family," they said, "about my adoptive family, my biological family and my found family.&nbsp; I decided to call it 'Bloodlines' because of all of these types of experiences I have had with these people in my life. It's almost like a big family tree."

Dallis grew up on a Cherokee Nation reservation in Oklahoma.&nbsp; Indigenous artwork is a big part of their work.&nbsp;

"[I am] trying to take these traditional techniques and trying to build them into contemporary artwork," they said.&nbsp;

"I would like to think when I'm building the pieces, I am actively thinking about the person I'm making it about and braiding these memories into the clay—pushing and pulling—and then when I fire them, it solidifies them into actual reality. It will be less likely to be forgotten."

Dallis has multiple pieces in the exhibit that are ceramic mixed-media bridges, which are symbolic of the connections between people.

"Osiyo," which means hello in Cherokee, is a life-size human figure in native dress. Dallis modeled the figure after himself.

"It is a representation of my spirit," they said, "almost as a spirit guide, guiding me through my life."

The figure is holding a bridge. Dallis made the rungs of that bridge by pressing clay in their hands. The gold rungs symbolize positive events in their life, and the blue rings are negative trauma. There is a continuation of the bridge, which is symbolic of Dallis' future.

"In Bloom" is a wall of photos of Dallis' friends, who Dallis calls their found family.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Psychology research indicates when you receive flowers, your brain releases oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine—all feel-good chemicals.

"I was comparing these people to flowers because, to me, picking a friend is just as hard as finding the perfect flower in the field and calling it your own," they said.

Dallis also created a series of self-portrait photographs called "5,000 Cuts." The series is about an unhealthy relationship. The words of the song by the same name, "Death by a Thousand Cuts," is written on the photographs.

"Broken Memories" is a collection of ceramic plates. The plates are brightly decorated in red paint with the faceless outlines of people depicted on them. All of the plates are broken.

When Dallis was an undergraduate, their father committed suicide. When this happened, they said they felt they lost their adopted family. Their expression of their identity and sexuality widened that fissure with their adoptive family, they said.

"I haven't talked to my family in seven years," they said. "They are all aging and growing, and I'm forgetting what they look like. This is me trying to connect with these people again."

&nbsp;"Escape" is a simple piece. It is a hangman's noose and a toppled stool that Dallis has used to represent their father's suicide. Both items are painted bright red.

"I wanted to talk about the absent other," they said, "and that there are implied things that happen in life. You can see an act happened here even though there is no hint of a figure."

They said red is the most powerful color. It can represent many things, including hunger, love and anger.

"It gives me a feeling of red flags of what to look for in someone who might have suicidal tendencies," they said.

Dallis will graduate with their master's of fine arts in May and hopes to teach art at the college level.

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostTyler Dallis explores Native American imagery as well as connections with family and the loss of those connections in their MFA exhibit "Bloodlines."The exhibit is on display now through May 11 at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art on the Fort Hays State University campus.Dallis' focus is ceramics and photography, although they have created mixed-media sculptures as well."Basically, my show is about my family," they said, "about my adoptive family, my biological family and my found family.&nbsp; I decided to call it 'Bloodlines' because of all of these types of experiences I have had with these people in my life. It's almost like a big family tree."<figure>

 </figure>Dallis grew up on a Cherokee Nation reservation in Oklahoma.&nbsp; Indigenous artwork is a big part of their work.&nbsp;"[I am] trying to take these traditional techniques and trying to build them into contemporary artwork," they said.&nbsp;"I would like to think when I'm building the pieces, I am actively thinking about the person I'm making it about and braiding these memories into the clay—pushing and pulling—and then when I fire them, it solidifies them into actual reality. It will be less likely to be forgotten."<figure>

 </figure>Dallis has multiple pieces in the exhibit that are ceramic mixed-media bridges, which are symbolic of the connections between people."Osiyo," which means hello in Cherokee, is a life-size human figure in native dress. Dallis modeled the figure after himself."It is a representation of my spirit," they said, "almost as a spirit guide, guiding me through my life."The figure is holding a bridge. Dallis made the rungs of that bridge by pressing clay in their hands. The gold rungs symbolize positive events in their life, and the blue rings are negative trauma. There is a continuation of the bridge, which is symbolic of Dallis' future."In Bloom" is a wall of photos of Dallis' friends, who Dallis calls their found family.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>&nbsp;Psychology research indicates when you receive flowers, your brain releases oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine—all feel-good chemicals."I was comparing these people to flowers because, to me, picking a friend is just as hard as finding the perfect flower in the field and calling it your own," they said.Dallis also created a series of self-portrait photographs called "5,000 Cuts." The series is about an unhealthy relationship. The words of the song by the same name, "Death by a Thousand Cuts," is written on the photographs."Broken Memories" is a collection of ceramic plates. The plates are brightly decorated in red paint with the faceless outlines of people depicted on them. All of the plates are broken.When Dallis was an undergraduate, their father committed suicide. When this happened, they said they felt they lost their adopted family. Their expression of their identity and sexuality widened that fissure with their adoptive family, they said.<figure>

 </figure>"I haven't talked to my family in seven years," they said. "They are all aging and growing, and I'm forgetting what they look like. This is me trying to connect with these people again."&nbsp;"Escape" is a simple piece. It is a hangman's noose and a toppled stool that Dallis has used to represent their father's suicide. Both items are painted bright red."I wanted to talk about the absent other," they said, "and that there are implied things that happen in life. You can see an act happened here even though there is no hint of a figure."They said red is the most powerful color. It can represent many things, including hunger, love and anger."It gives me a feeling of red flags of what to look for in someone who might have suicidal tendencies," they said.Dallis will graduate with their master's of fine arts in May and hopes to teach art at the college level.

The Fort
Hays State University Department of Music and Theatre is wrapping up its year
with a series of concerts.

Kicking
off the events this week was the New Music Festival, which began Friday and will
conclude Saturday with an “evening of the music of Katherine Bergman,”
according to an FHSU announcement.

“Bergman&nbsp;is a
Minnesota-based composer who draws on environmentalism and literature to create
music described as hypnotic and visceral,” the announcement said. “She has
received commissions and performances from leading ensembles throughout the
United States and abroad.”&nbsp;

The New Music Festival
concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts
Center.

Her performance will feature the world premiere of&nbsp;“An
Absence of Silence”&nbsp;for violin, cello, piano and bass clarinet,
commissioned by the FHSU New Music Ensemble, comprised of FHSU instructors that “share
a passion for the music of living composers.”

At 2:30 p.m. Sunday, FHSU senior Kathryn Walters will
perform her senior vocal performance in Palmer Hall.

FHSU choirs will next take the stage for the annual Choirs
Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the
Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

“We call it our Masterworks Concert
and start off with the Fort Hays Singers doing a folksy eight-movement piece
called Southern Grace,” said FHSU director of choral activities, Terry Crull. 

The Smoky Hill Choral will
follow with Schubert's famous Mass in G, he said.

“And then the Concert Choir is
going to finish with one of my favorite works, 'Frostiana,' the poetry of Robert
Frost, set by Randall Thompson, one of my favorite composers,” Crull said. 

He said the concert will run less
than 90 minutes and is a “nice concert, great way to end the year.”

The FHSU Bands Concert will
take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday under the direction of Peter Lillpopp, director
of bands, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

And wrapping up the week the calendar
is the Junior Music Recital of Jackson Scott and Julia Long in Palmer Hall at
7:30 p.m. Friday.

 VEGAS — The words “impressive” and “awesome” were common refrains 
from a group of entertainment reporters who were among the first to see 
the upcoming DC superhero movie “The Flash.”

Warner Bros. screened
 the film for the first time at CinemaCon Tuesday for theater owners, 
exhibitors and reporters attending the annual trade show and industry 
conference.

Reviews are embargoed until a later date – the film, 
the studio said, is not completely finished – but viewers were able to 
post reactions on social media as soon as the credits rolled.

Brian
 Welk of Indiewire wrote that “it played very well,” pointing out that 
there were more than a few screams and gasps in the packed theater.

Film
 critic Jordan Hoffman tweeted that it was, “far more madcap than I 
expected. Really nailed what reading a 5-issue crossover comic book is 
like. Tons of Ezra Miller being zany and time paradox stuff. Nerds will 
lose their minds at the ending.”

“The Playlist’s” Greg Ellwood 
wrote that it was “very good” and that Miller was “great,” while Scott 
Mantz went a step further declaring that it’s “one of the very best DC 
movies, a perfect blend of action, heart &amp; humor.”

Erik Davis,
 of Fandango, wrote on Twitter that it is “tremendous" and that it is 
“without a doubt among the best superhero films ever made. An all-timer.
 Inventive storytelling, FANTASTIC action sequences, great cast. SO MANY
 nerdy details.”

Jason Guerrasio, of Business Insider, had a more 
tempered reaction, writing that it is “def not the best superhero movie 
ever made ... but it’s an impressive DC movie with lots of emotion and 
loads of surprises.”

“The Flash,” directed by Andy Muschietti, is 
one of the studio’s biggest films of the year. In the film, Barry Allen 
uses his superpowers to go back in time in an attempt to change the past
 and save his parents. But things go awry and he finds himself stuck in a
 very different reality where Michael Shannon's General Zod is back and 
Batman is not the Batman he knows (Ben Affleck's version). Widely 
available trailers have already revealed that the new Batman he 
encounters is Michael Keaton's version.

After the box office 
disappointment of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” earlier this year, the hope
 is that “The Flash,” which reportedly carries a $200 million budget, 
will reach blockbuster heights when it opens in theaters on June 16.

The long-planned standalone about The Flash/Barry Allen has also been the subject of much discussion because of its star <a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-indictments-ezra-miller-theft-6a077b5f5b65ad58a3909266cfafc7a1">Ezra Miller</a>, who made headlines last year for a string of arrests and erratic behavior.

Miller
 was arrested twice last year in Hawaii, for disorderly conduct and 
harassment at a karaoke bar and then for second-degree assault. The 
parents of 18-year-old Tokata Iron Eyes, a Native American activist, 
last year filed a protection order against Miller, accusing the actor of
 grooming their child and other inappropriate behavior with her as a 
minor from the age of 12. Tokata Iron Eyes has disputed that.

Miller, who identifies as non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, said last year that they were <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=ezra+miller+apnews&amp;rlz=1C1EJFC_enUS874US874&amp;oq=ezra+miller+&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i59l2j0i433i512j69i57j46i433i512j69i61j69i60l2.2186j1j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8">seeking mental health treatment</a>.

throughout Miller’s personal troubles and the shelving of “Batgirl,” 
remained steadfast in its plans to release the “The Flash.”
