In celebration of the 40th Annual Chamber Awards Banquet, The Chamber in Hays, Kansas, is embarking on a special project to commemorate four decades of community engagement, business growth, and individual achievements.

As part of this milestone, Chamber staff are reaching out to past award winners, banquet attendees, and participants, asking them to share memories, photographs, and videos that capture the essence of the event over the last 40 years.

The annual banquet has long served as a cornerstone event for the Hays business community, celebrating the accomplishments of local businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made a significant impact on the region.

With the 40th anniversary approaching, The Chamber is taking the opportunity to reflect on the contributions of those who have shaped the local economy and culture.

Sarah Wasinger, President and CEO of The Chamber in Hays, expressed her excitement for the project, noting the importance of capturing these stories for future generations.

“As we celebrate the 40th Annual Chamber Awards Banquet, it’s not just about looking back but also about recognizing how far we’ve come and what we’ve achieved together as a community,” Wasinger said. “The awards banquet has been a platform to highlight the incredible businesses and individuals who have made Hays what it is today, and we

want to honor that legacy by documenting the memories that have been created over the past 40 years.”

The Chamber is inviting all past award winners, nominees, sponsors, and attendees to contribute photos, videos, and written memories that highlight the impact of the banquet on the community.

These materials will be incorporated into a multimedia presentation that will be featured during the 2025 banquet, offering attendees a chance to relive past moments and see how the event has evolved.

“We want to bring people together to remember and celebrate the role the Annual Chamber Awards Banquet has played in their professional and personal lives,” Wasinger said. “When you look at the names of past recipients, you see a collection of people and businesses who have dedicated their lives and passion towards making Hays and Ellis County a special place to call home.”

To participate in this unique project, previous attendees and award recipients are encouraged to submit their materials to The Chamber by December 1.

Submissions can be sent via email to hayscc@hayschamber.com or dropped off at The Chamber office at 2700 Vine St.

For those wanting to set up a time to capture those memories on video are encouraged to schedule a time with chamber staff.

All submissions will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in the banquet’s multimedia presentation.

Those with compelling stories or particularly notable contributions may also be featured in a special retrospective video series leading up to the event.

Three-day weather outlook

The annual Oktoberfest Hays celebration, a beloved tradition that honors the region’s rich Volga German heritage, is set to return with a full lineup of exciting activities on Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5.

Event organizers have officially released the schedule, offering a packed weekend of entertainment, contests, and cultural festivities for all ages.

This year’s Oktoberfest will be held at Municipal Park on Friday and Saturday, drawing thousands of attendees from the local area and beyond.

The event features a blend of traditional Volga German-inspired activities, live music, food, and competitions, providing two days of community-focused fun.

Friday, October 4th: Traditional Celebrations and Contests

The Oktoberfest festivities will kick off on Friday, October 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with an opening ceremony scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Municipal Park.

The day will begin with the ceremonial Tapping of the Keg at 11:00 a.m., a highlight that draws onlookers eager to join in the first toast of the festival.

Attendees can test their strength and endurance with a variety of competitions, including the Stein Holding Contest at 2:00 p.m., followed by the Deutsch Hops Contest at 4:00 p.m., both open to participants aged 21 and over.

For food enthusiasts, the OktoberFEAST Contest will take place at 5:00 p.m., offering a chance to celebrate and savor the flavors of Oktoberfest.

Live entertainment will fill the park throughout the day, with performances from popular local bands, including the Ron Werth Band, Rice County Line, and Jimmy Dee and The Fabulous Destinations.

Visitors can also enjoy park-wide attractions such as the Beer Puppeteers, High Striker, and the traditional Mug Toss.

Friday’s festivities will wrap up at 7:00 p.m., closing out the first day of the celebration.

Saturday, October 5th: Family Fun and Homecoming Parade

Oktoberfest continues on Saturday, October 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a strong focus on family-friendly activities and entertainment.

The day will kick off with the FHSU Homecoming Parade at 11:00 a.m., followed by a special Oktoberfest welcome ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

Competitive spirits can join in on the Cornhole Tournament at 12:00 p.m., with the crowd-favorite World’s Largest Bierock Reveal at 1:30 p.m., sponsored by Lewis Toyota.

Other fun games and contests include the German Freeze Game at 2:00 p.m., the Pumpkin Pass at 3:00 p.m., and the Pumpkin Rolling Contest at 4:00 p.m. for children in the West Shelter House.

Live music and entertainment will continue to keep the energy high throughout the day, with performances by Galen Schmidtberger, Karl Meis, and Rice County Line. Kids will have plenty to do as well, with games and entertainment available from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., featuring the popular Jammin Randy show. Bounce houses will also be open for young festival-goers from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Wild West Festival committee is proud to announce the successful conclusion of the 2024 festival, a year that proved both challenging and rewarding.

Despite the unique hurdles faced in organizing this year’s event, the community rallied together to ensure the festival was a memorable one.

The committee extends its sincere gratitude to the sponsors and volunteers who were instrumental in making the festival a triumph.

"This year brought its share of difficulties, from logistics to weather concerns, but the way our community stepped up was remarkable," said Jeff Ridgway, president of the Wild West Festival committee. "We faced some unexpected challenges, but thanks to the incredible efforts of our sponsors, volunteers, and attendees, we were able to overcome them and host a fantastic event. It’s a testament to the power of community collaboration."

The 2024 Wild West Festival featured the traditional array of activities that have made it a hallmark of summer in Hays.

From its signature concerts to family-friendly activities and the always-popular fireworks display, the festival drew crowds from across the region.

This year’s concert lineup included both local talent and nationally recognized performers, keeping the crowds engaged and energized throughout the event.

Suzy Bogguss had a revelation on stage with Garrison Keillor in 2008. Everyone loves tosing along on “Red River Valley” – except the children who somehow don't know the song. Folk songs are the scrapbook of the American experience, but as music education fades from our public schools, she worried; these beautiful melodies are in danger of being overlooked. She resolved to record these timeless songs in an updated but reverent way – so that everyone can sing along on “Red River Valley.”

And who better than the golden throated Suzy? 

The platinum selling songstress alreadyhad a full bookshelf of Grammy and CMA awards and now with the release of American Folk Songbook she can put her own book up there too. The CD and companion Songbook was released in the summer of 2011.&nbsp;

Northwest Kansans can hear Suzy at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday October 6th in Oakley, Kansas at the Oakley High School Auditorium.&nbsp;Admission is by season ticket or individual ticket at the door.

Her dad was a machinist for International Harvester and her mother is a retired secretary who taught Suzy at an early age to read vocal music. She has three older siblings. Married to songwriter Doug Crider, the couple has one child, Ben.

Suzy joined the church choir at age five and began to play the piano at the urging of her musical mother. When her older siblings began playing the drums, Suzy followed suit and continued this musical course through high school. As a teenager, she added the guitar to her repertoire and bought her first 12-string with the money she earned frombaby-sitting. Though she sang in musicals and other school groups, it never occurred to her that her future was on stage.

Her songs have been heard on television shows and in commercials. She has performed on many national television shows including: In Performance At The White House (PBS), A Capitol 4th (PBS), Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Live With Regis And Kelly, and The View. Her dad was a machinist for International Harvester and her mother is a retired secretary who taught Suzy at an early age to read vocal music. She has three older siblings. Married to songwriter Doug Crider, the couple has one child, Ben.Suzy joined the church choir at age five and began to play the piano at the urging of her musical mother. When her older siblings began playing the drums, Suzy followed suit and continued this musical course through high school. As a teenager, she added the guitar to her repertoire and bought her first 12-string with the money she earned frombaby-sitting. Though she sang in musicals and other school groups, it never occurred to her that her future was on stage.Her songs have been heard on television shows and in commercials. She has performed on many national television shows including: In Performance At The White House (PBS), A Capitol 4th (PBS), Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Live With Regis And Kelly, and The View. A lost dog strays into a jungle. A lion sees this from a distance and thinks to himself, “This guy looks edible, never seen his kind before.” So the lion starts rushing towards the dog with menace. The dog notices and starts to panic, but as he’s about to run he sees some bones next to him and gets an idea and says loudly, “Mmm…that was some good lion meat!” The lion abruptly stops and says, " Woah! This guy seems tougher then he looks, I better leave while I can.” Over by the tree top, a monkey witnessed everything. The monkey realizes the he can benefit from this situation by telling the lion and getting something in return. So the monkey proceeds to tell the lion what really happened and the lion says angrily, “Get on my back, we’ll get him together.” They start rushing back to the dog. The dog sees them and realized what happened. He starts to panic even more. He then gets another idea and shouts, “There you are monkey! I told you to bring me another lion an hour ago.”

Kansas Tourism awarded $102,500 in Tourism Marketing Grants last week, with Hays being a recipient in two tourism collaborations.

The Kansas Gunsmoke Trail was awarded $9,800 for its multi-city road trip inviting visitors to Kansas to “Follow the Gunsmoke Trail.”

Convention and Visitors Bureaus in Wichita, Abilene, Hays, and Dodge City unveiled the collaborative tourism campaign this spring. The itinerary provides fans of Gunsmoke, the Emmy award-winning primetime Western that entertained audiences for 20 years, an opportunity to travel around Kansas and see cities referenced in the show.

Hays CVB Director Melissa Dixon was in attendance for the Gunsmoke Trail check presentation in Dodge City on September 17 along with Dodge City CVB Director Megan Welsh and Abilene CVB Director Julie Roller-Weeks.

“We appreciate the level of support we receive from both Kansas Commerce and Kansas Tourism to take our visitor recruitment to the next level,” said Dixon.

Meet Kansas was awarded $10,000 to host an event with meeting planners featuring networking, presentations, and tours.

Meet Kansas is a collaboration of Destination Marketing Organizations from across the state who have banded together to promote Kansas to event, meeting, and business retreat&nbsp;planners.

Hays CVB Convention Sales Manager Janet Kuhn serves as the president of Meet Kansas and was present with Great Bend CVB Director Christina Hayes to accept the check in Great Bend on September 18.

Funding for Kansas Tourism grants, including the Tourism Marketing Grant, is provided by the Economic Development Initiatives Fund (EDIF) that is derived from state lottery proceeds.

The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Hope Blakeley of Arvada, Colorado to teach two Joy of Painting classes on October 12th and 13th. On Saturday, October 12th, the class will paint “Cauldron Bubble,” and on Sunday, October 13th, “Fall Sunset.” Classes are held in the Logan Youth Center, 402 W Church Street, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day just like Bob did on TV. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

The public is invited to be a part of the grand unveiling of the new Ellis Historic Walking Trail on Sept. 27 anytime between 8:30-11:30 a.m., downtown Ellis.

The south end of the trail will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony with WGS students at 8:30 AM, held at the historic Stone School marker in the front lawn. At 8:55 AM, the north end will host a ribbon-cutting with SMS students at the historic marker near the Washington Street Bridge. This scenic 1.5-mile trail offers a journey through history, connecting these two significant locations.

Experience history like never before with captivating re-enactments featuring notable figures such as John Mulvey, Praying John, Sheriff Miller, Buffalo Bill, Mother Smith, and Walter P. Chrysler. Some trail markers will have live hosts to guide you, while others will invite you to explore at your own pace through engaging readings.

While exploring downtown Ellis, be sure to check out the impressive mural inside the mini-train garage, whether you walk the entire 1.5-mile trail or just part of it. A knowledgeable host will guide you, connecting this stunning artwork to the vibrant history of the new walking trail.

Special guests joining in from Nicodemus will be descendants of former enslaved African Americans who left Kentucky after the Civil War in search of freedom in Kansas, often referred to as the “Promised Land.” Their ancestors traveled by train to Ellis and then embarked on a 40-mile journey north to Nicodemus, following the historic “Ellis Trail.” Keep an eye out for Buffalo Bill along the walking trail! In the 1870s, he was contracted by the railroad to supply buffalo meat for workers and restaurants in Ellis. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect with history!

Trail maps will be available at the Alliance Office, located at 820 Washington Street, as well as at any trail marker you choose to start from—look for the colorful pinwheels that identify the markers. Enjoy autumn treats for visitors on the morning of the trail opening, while supplies last! Ellis History Booklets will also be available for purchase at the Alliance. These southern gents quickly won over Sing-Off judges and--most importantly--millions of NBC primetime viewers after demonstrating their unique, laid-back-yet-dynamic style of a cappella. Since their success on The Sing-Off, Street Corner Symphony has made their mark on the music world, recording albums, providing clinics for schools, giving benefits for cancer, performing across the country and around the world, and even working with major artists.&nbsp; Street Corner Symphony moves seamlessly between most styles of music, feeling at home in all of them. Their repertoire covers a wide range, from gospel to rock and pop, appealing to the young and old alike.

Smoky Hills PBS is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of&nbsp;Cottonwood Connections&nbsp;for its fifth season, premiering this Sunday at 6 PM.&nbsp;

The locally-produced series continues its mission of highlighting the stories, people, and heritage of rural Kansas.

“As we dig into the topics for each new season, it is always compelling to realize how many more stories there are to tell. We have such a complex and interesting history on the Plains that encapsulates so much of what shaped our country,”&nbsp;said Ed Lowry, Cottonwood Connections Creator.&nbsp;“It is a privilege to tell those stories and to introduce a broader audience to the great folks who work so hard to expand our understanding of our own history.”
