Suzy Bogguss had a revelation on stage with Garrison Keillor in 2008. Everyone loves tosing along on “Red River Valley” – except the children who somehow don't know the song. Folk songs are the scrapbook of the American experience, but as music education fades from our public schools, she worried; these beautiful melodies are in danger of being overlooked. She resolved to record these timeless songs in an updated but reverent way – so that everyone can sing along on “Red River Valley.”

And who better than the golden throated Suzy? 

The platinum selling songstress alreadyhad a full bookshelf of Grammy and CMA awards and now with the release of American Folk Songbook she can put her own book up there too. The CD and companion Songbook was released in the summer of 2011.&nbsp;

Northwest Kansans can hear Suzy at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday October 6th in Oakley, Kansas at the Oakley High School Auditorium.&nbsp;Admission is by season ticket or individual ticket at the door.

Hansen Foundation is a major contributor.&nbsp;“Music has always been my purest joy even as a child,” Suzy writes. “One of my favorite memories is my grade-school music teacher pounding on the piano and leading the class in rousing renditions of folk songs from all around the world.”Bogguss is originally from Aledo, Illinois. Her dad was a machinist for International Harvester and her mother is a retired secretary who taught Suzy at an early age to read vocal music. She has three older siblings. Married to songwriter Doug Crider, the couple has one child, Ben.

Suzy joined the church choir at age five and began to play the piano at the urging of her musical mother. When her older siblings began playing the drums, Suzy followed suit and continued this musical course through high school. As a teenager, she added the guitar to her repertoire and bought her first 12-string with the money she earned frombaby-sitting. Though she sang in musicals and other school groups, it never occurred to her that her future was on stage.

Her songs have been heard on television shows and in commercials. She has performed on many national television shows including: In Performance At The White House (PBS), A Capitol 4th (PBS), Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Live With Regis And Kelly, and The View. Suzy is a frequent guest on National Public Radio's A Prairie Home Companion with Keillor.&nbsp;Come join us to enjoy Suzy again as she returns to in Western Kansas.&nbsp; &nbsp;

A lost dog strays into a jungle. A lion sees this from a distance and thinks to himself, “This guy looks edible, never seen his kind before.” So the lion starts rushing towards the dog with menace. The dog notices and starts to panic, but as he’s about to run he sees some bones next to him and gets an idea and says loudly, “Mmm…that was some good lion meat!” The lion abruptly stops and says, " Woah! This guy seems tougher then he looks, I better leave while I can.” Over by the tree top, a monkey witnessed everything. The monkey realizes the he can benefit from this situation by telling the lion and getting something in return. So the monkey proceeds to tell the lion what really happened and the lion says angrily, “Get on my back, we’ll get him together.” They start rushing back to the dog. The dog sees them and realized what happened. He starts to panic even more. He then gets another idea and shouts, “There you are monkey! I told you to bring me another lion an hour ago.”

Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau

Kansas Tourism awarded $102,500 in Tourism Marketing Grants last week, with Hays being a recipient in two tourism collaborations.

The Kansas Gunsmoke Trail was awarded $9,800 for its multi-city road trip inviting visitors to Kansas to “Follow the Gunsmoke Trail.”

Convention and Visitors Bureaus in Wichita, Abilene, Hays, and Dodge City unveiled the collaborative tourism campaign this spring. The itinerary provides fans of Gunsmoke, the Emmy award-winning primetime Western that entertained audiences for 20 years, an opportunity to travel around Kansas and see cities referenced in the show.

Hays CVB Director Melissa Dixon was in attendance for the Gunsmoke Trail check presentation in Dodge City on September 17 along with Dodge City CVB Director Megan Welsh and Abilene CVB Director Julie Roller-Weeks.

“We appreciate the level of support we receive from both Kansas Commerce and Kansas Tourism to take our visitor recruitment to the next level,” said Dixon.

Meet Kansas was awarded $10,000 to host an event with meeting planners featuring networking, presentations, and tours.

Meet Kansas is a collaboration of Destination Marketing Organizations from across the state who have banded together to promote Kansas to event, meeting, and business retreat&nbsp;planners.

Hays CVB Convention Sales Manager Janet Kuhn serves as the president of Meet Kansas and was present with Great Bend CVB Director Christina Hayes to accept the check in Great Bend on September 18.

Funding for Kansas Tourism grants, including the Tourism Marketing Grant, is provided by the Economic Development Initiatives Fund (EDIF) that is derived from state lottery proceeds.

KZ Country Cheesy Joke of the Day 09/25/24

The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Hope Blakeley of Arvada, Colorado to teach two Joy of Painting classes on October 12th and 13th. On Saturday, October 12th, the class will paint “Cauldron Bubble,” and on Sunday, October 13th, “Fall Sunset.” Classes are held in the Logan Youth Center, 402 W Church Street, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day just like Bob did on TV. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

Call the Museum to register or find the registration form on our website (hansenmuseum.org) under Classes &amp; Workshops. Discounts are available for Patron and Sustaining Hansen Museum Members. The public is invited to be a part of the grand unveiling of the new Ellis Historic Walking Trail on Sept. 27 anytime between 8:30-11:30 a.m., downtown Ellis.

The south end of the trail will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony with WGS students at 8:30 AM, held at the historic Stone School marker in the front lawn. At 8:55 AM, the north end will host a ribbon-cutting with SMS students at the historic marker near the Washington Street Bridge. This scenic 1.5-mile trail offers a journey through history, connecting these two significant locations.

Experience history like never before with captivating re-enactments featuring notable figures such as John Mulvey, Praying John, Sheriff Miller, Buffalo Bill, Mother Smith, and Walter P. Chrysler. Some trail markers will have live hosts to guide you, while others will invite you to explore at your own pace through engaging readings.

While exploring downtown Ellis, be sure to check out the impressive mural inside the mini-train garage, whether you walk the entire 1.5-mile trail or just part of it. A knowledgeable host will guide you, connecting this stunning artwork to the vibrant history of the new walking trail.

Special guests joining in from Nicodemus will be descendants of former enslaved African Americans who left Kentucky after the Civil War in search of freedom in Kansas, often referred to as the “Promised Land.” Their ancestors traveled by train to Ellis and then embarked on a 40-mile journey north to Nicodemus, following the historic “Ellis Trail.” Keep an eye out for Buffalo Bill along the walking trail! In the 1870s, he was contracted by the railroad to supply buffalo meat for workers and restaurants in Ellis. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect with history!

Trail maps will be available at the Alliance Office, located at 820 Washington Street, as well as at any trail marker you choose to start from—look for the colorful pinwheels that identify the markers. Enjoy autumn treats for visitors on the morning of the trail opening, while supplies last! Ellis History Booklets will also be available for purchase at the Alliance. These southern gents quickly won over Sing-Off judges and--most importantly--millions of NBC primetime viewers after demonstrating their unique, laid-back-yet-dynamic style of a cappella. Since their success on The Sing-Off, Street Corner Symphony has made their mark on the music world, recording albums, providing clinics for schools, giving benefits for cancer, performing across the country and around the world, and even working with major artists.&nbsp; Street Corner Symphony moves seamlessly between most styles of music, feeling at home in all of them. Their repertoire covers a wide range, from gospel to rock and pop, appealing to the young and old alike.

WPAA to present 'Street Corner Symphony'

Smoky Hills PBS is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of&nbsp;Cottonwood Connections&nbsp;for its fifth season, premiering this Sunday at 6 PM.&nbsp;

The locally-produced series continues its mission of highlighting the stories, people, and heritage of rural Kansas.

“As we dig into the topics for each new season, it is always compelling to realize how many more stories there are to tell. We have such a complex and interesting history on the Plains that encapsulates so much of what shaped our country,”&nbsp;said Ed Lowry, Cottonwood Connections Creator.&nbsp;“It is a privilege to tell those stories and to introduce a broader audience to the great folks who work so hard to expand our understanding of our own history.”

The Hays Symphony invites the community to its
opening concert of the 2024-25 season on Saturday, September 28, at 7:30 p.m.
in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. Themed as “Dark Whimsy,” the
concert repertoire includes delightfully stark yet dreamlike compositions from
Shostakovich, Bacewicz, and Beethoven. 

In “Dark Whimsy,” passion and nostalgia meld
into a contemplation of things past where the idyllic and surreal cross the
sinister. Cello virtuoso and FHSU music faculty member Ben Cline will feature
as a soloist in Shostakovich’s brooding and off-kilter Cello Concerto No. 2.

Ben Cline himself explains more about his
experience preparing for the concerto in a recent video interview. “There’s an
interesting quality to this piece,” said Cline. “Shostakovich wrote it in the
last decade of his life. It’s true of a lot of composers, especially composers
of his stature, that they keep reinventing themselves—that they keep pushing
their style forward.” 

He continues to add: “But as they do that into
the latter part of their career, there’s a lot of introspection. This piece has
those elements in it. It is nostalgic in a way. There’s a sense of sorrow in it

Two additional pieces contribute to Music
Director Brian Buckstead’s vision of “Dark Whimsy.” The concert opener, Grażyna
Bacewicz’s Overture, offers the
energy and volume of an entire symphony packed within its short six minutes.
Bacewicz completed her Overture in
1943 during the German occupation of Poland. However, the Overture would not see its performance until after Poland’s
liberation from the Nazis in 1945. Despite her prolific background, Bacewicz
has received little attention in the United States—until recently.

The other highlight of the concert is
Beethoven’s playful yet fiery Symphony
No. 8. Driven by interpersonal and romantic troubles, Beethoven reflects
the equally unpredictable sways of passion and human emotion in his lively and
witty Eighth Symphony.

Following the concert, attendees are welcome
to mingle with the musicians at the post-concert reception in the hall’s lobby.
This dessert reception is sponsored by a generous donation from the Hays Area
Bicyclists. 

Over the summer, various players in the
orchestra provided musical entertainment for the Hays Area Bicyclists’
successful “Tour Die Kapellen.” Concert-goers can learn more about this “Tour
of the Chapels” and how to participate on the Hays Area Bicyclists’ website.

Attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets
