Cool Careers, a television series that introduces children and teens to high-demand careers in Kansas, will air on all four local Kansas PBS member stations this fall: KCPT (Kansas City), KTWU (Topeka and eastern Kansas), PBS Kansas (Wichita and Central Kansas) and SHPTV (Central and Western Kansas).

“This is a great opportunity to introduce more young Kansans to jobs critical to our state’s future,” said series creator Kristin Brighton, founder of HirePaths and an owner of New Boston Creative Group of Manhattan. 

“Sharing our work on PBS will allow our content to reach more children, teens and families.”KTWU General Manager and Executive Director Valerie M.B. VanDerSluis sees the partnership with HirePaths as a chance to provide unique content for younger and teenage audiences, groups local stations typically don’t have a lot of options for.“Being able to offer this audience entertaining, educational and eye-opening content is a win for all of us. I was even educated on the various jobs available in our state that I had not known about previously, so parents will enjoy Cool Careers just as much as their kids,” VanDerSluis said.

The series encourages teens to try out career and technical education courses and other opportunities for free and low-cost career training while in high school. Each episode provides a possible roadmap to gaining the skills and experience required for each featured career.

“Many kids wait until they’re juniors or seniors to think about what they want to do after high school, and by then they’ve lost a lot of opportunities for free training in our public schools,” Brighton said. “Even if early exploration results in them crossing off some options from their possibilities list, that’s great. We want to help them narrow their choices to avoid wasting time and money after high school.”

Since fall 2022, Cool Careers has been distributed on social media, YouTube and HirePaths.com. For use on Kansas PBS stations, the short videos have been combined into 30-minute episodes. The stations also plan to run some of the videos in their original short form between other programming.

Each video features a high-demand career and stars a local young person from Kansas or the Kansas City metro area. Hosts range in age from 11 to 16, and episodes feature businesses in a wide variety of industries and locations across the state.“So far we’ve featured jobs from an agronomist to a wind turbine tech —&nbsp;and in about every possible sector in between,” Brighton said. “We should have a possible career for every kid to consider.”Brighton hopes HirePaths will motivate more young people to stay in Kansas as they enter the workforce.&nbsp;“The state has recognized that we don’t have a jobs problem —&nbsp;we have a people problem. HirePaths 'Cool Careers' episodes to run on Smoky Hill PBS

Living Waters Prayer Chapel, 1410 Toulon Ave., will present a Gospel Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.

The concert will feature Stephanie Dawn, a singer and speaker, who has been blind since birth. She will be accompanied by her stepfather, Dann Thornton, a pianist and arranger. Both are with Dawn of Hope Ministry, Inc. The concert is free and open to the public.

“Stephanie will be sharing her powerful testimony, engaging voice, and exuberant personality into a captivating and uplifting program that draws the listener closer to God, church Pastor Mike Bremer said in a news release.

“Her enthusiastic love for Jesus lifts her above the many challenges she faces in addition to her blindness. This love is inspiring to others facing challenges in their own lives,” Bremer said.

According to her website, in addition to her blindness, Dawn faces other health challenges. When she first sang the chorus to “Jesus Loves Me” at the age of 11 months, her mother said she knew God had given her daughter a special gift.

At the age of 3, Dawn sang her first solo in church, and when she was 9 she recorded her first album and began traveling. Since then, she has performed at the John F. Kennedy Center and has been featured on “The 700 Club,” “3ABN,” and “The Voice of Prophecy.”

After a period of not traveling during COVID, she and her parents bought a motorhome in 2021—it is now their only home--and they travel around the United States, where Dawn performs at churches, camps, and other venues.

Astra Bank officials broke ground on a new building at 27th and Main streets in Hays on Friday.

The bank purchased the property from the city of Hays. The city has also purchased the current Astra Bank building, 1100 Fort, and will renovate it into its new police station and municipal court.

The city had intended to use the property at 27th and Main for the new police station, but renovating the current Astra Bank location will save the city about $5 million.&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/feaccb3c-8500-45bc-b87d-804c7c322743">The Astra option is estimated to cost $8 million, while new construction would have cost about $13 million.</a>

The Astra facility would provide 23,000 square feet with room for expansion.

The proposed police station on Fort will also be across the street from the Ellis County Jail and Sheriff's Office.

Kyle Campbell, president and CEO of Astra Bank, said&nbsp;during the ground-breaking ceremony sponsored by The Chamber in Hays that the new bank location should benefit the bank.&nbsp;

He said the bank's current location did not meet its customers' banking needs today.

Among the upgrades will be better drive-through banking access, he said.

He joked that just during the groundbreaking, more traffic had gone by on 27th Street than during the entire week at their current location.

"It will be nice to be here where we are more accessible to the community, and I think also it will be a fantastic asset to the community in terms of starting the development of this really visible and prime location within Hays," Campbell said.

"We are very excited to be investing in Hays, and I want to thank all of you for taking the time to come out and help us celebrate this occasion, where we are looking forward to investing even more in the future of Hays."

The new bank is scheduled to be completed by summer 2025.

The project also will include retail or office space.

The lot is large enough that the bank hopes to work with a developer to build multi-family housing on the rest of the land.

"It has allowed us to get to what I think is truly a win-win for both the community and Astra Bank," he said.

The Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau is hosting a free Kite Show for the community on Sunday, September 15 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, 1376 U.S. Hwy. 183 Bypass.

This family-friendly event will feature the spectacular giant kite displays of Great American Kites &amp; Events featuring some of the world’s largest kites.

<a>“This event is the perfect way to end the summer season,” said Brittney Squire, Marketing Manager at the Hays CVB. “Guests should feel confident that even if the wind doesn’t cooperate, there will be plenty of activities on site for the whole family to enjoy.”</a>

Several food trucks are confirmed to be at the event including Snow Cone Express, Chilly Charlie’s (freeze dried candy), Triple C Lemonade Stand, Taco Riendo, El Primo Burgers, and Floyd’s Smoke Shack. These vendors will set up in the sports complex parking lot. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, coolers, and drinks into the sports complex, but glass bottles are not allowed. Pets on leashes are allowed at the complex, but owners must clean up after their pets.

Other activities include yard games sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Ellis County, the bookmobile courtesy of the Hays Public Library, the Fort Hays State University Makervan, and live animals from the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

One of the biggest fundraisers for the Downtown Hays Development Corporation is set for Saturday, Sept. 14.

Tickets are available online&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.downtownhays.com/">www.downtownhays.com</a> and at the DHDC office, 1200 Main.

Wines &amp; Steins starts at 6 p.m. with check-in at the downtown pavilion, 10th and Main, and then a leisurely stroll through 12 business locations in historic downtown Hays. The stroll-stop hosts have lined up a large variety of tasty hors d'oeuvres from local restaurants to pair with the different wines and micro-beers sampled at each location.

Following the stroll, the fun moves under the pavilion with live music, complimentary drinks, a dessert bar, and an auction featuring experience items, tastings, a golf package and overnight stays in popular locations.&nbsp;

A basket of gift cards worth several hundred dollars donated by DHDC board members will also be up for grabs.&nbsp;

Commemorative glassware is designed each year for Wines &amp; Steins. 

"People love to collect these," said Julie Rider, DHDC executive director. "Every style is unique."&nbsp;

Auto World is again the presenting glassware sponsor.

Other Wine &amp; Steins sponsors include Astra Bank, Insurance Planning, Nex-Tech, Nex-Tech Wireless, Midwest Energy, and Robert Brogden GMC. DHDC is not a membership organization, and downtown businesses do not pay dues or fees.&nbsp;

As a private nonprofit, DHDC receives about 60 percent of its annual budget through fundraisers and private donations to its partnership program.

"Our funding allows us to promote downtown through advertising, hosting our website and the Downtown Directory. We welcome new businesses and celebrate big milestones for existing businesses with brick presentations," Rider said.&nbsp;

"The funding helps us put together retailer events like Bazaar on the Bricks and the Christmas holiday programs, as well as community events we host, like the Downtown Hays Market and the FrostFest parade."

The DHDC board is in the process of planning several downtown beautification projects.&nbsp;

"We promote downtown as a whole," Rider said. "We want everybody to be successful because when one business succeeds, we all succeed."

<a href="https://www.downtownhays.com/event-details/wines-steins-2024">Wines &amp; Steins tickets</a> are $65 for general admission and $85 for the VIP experience, which includes early check-in at the pavilion and personal delivery of a tasting glass and gifts earlier in the week.

Tickets are available online&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.downtownhays.com/">www.downtownhays.com</a> and at the DHDC office, 1200 Main.Wines &amp; Steins starts at 6 p.m. with check-in at the downtown pavilion, 10th and Main, and then a leisurely stroll through 12 business locations in historic downtown Hays. The stroll-stop hosts have lined up a large variety of tasty hors d'oeuvres from local restaurants to pair with the different wines and micro-beers sampled at each location.Following the stroll, the fun moves under the pavilion with live music, complimentary drinks, a dessert bar, and an auction featuring experience items, tastings, a golf package and overnight stays in popular locations.&nbsp;A basket of gift cards worth several hundred dollars donated by DHDC board members will also be up for grabs.&nbsp;Commemorative glassware is designed each year for Wines &amp; Steins. "People love to collect these," said Julie Rider, DHDC executive director. "Every style is unique."&nbsp;Auto World is again the presenting glassware sponsor.Other Wine &amp; Steins sponsors include Astra Bank, Insurance Planning, Nex-Tech, Nex-Tech Wireless, Midwest Energy, and Robert Brogden GMC. Contributors are Regeena's Flowers &amp; Events, Wedding Connections, 8th Street Liquor, G&amp;L Tire, Northwestern Printers, Coors, Wil Fischer Distributing, and Pepsi.DHDC is not a membership organization, and downtown businesses do not pay dues or fees.&nbsp;As a private nonprofit, DHDC receives about 60 percent of its annual budget through fundraisers and private donations to its partnership program."Our funding allows us to promote downtown through advertising, hosting our website and the Downtown Directory. We welcome new businesses and celebrate big milestones for existing businesses with brick presentations," Rider said.&nbsp;"The funding helps us put together retailer events like Bazaar on the Bricks and the Christmas holiday programs, as well as community events we host, like the Downtown Hays Market and the FrostFest parade."The DHDC board is in the process of planning several downtown beautification projects.&nbsp;"We promote downtown as a whole," Rider said. The Hays Public Library has hired Ashlyn Sager for the position of early literacy coordinator. Sager will be tasked with organizing and leading Storytimes, working with daycares and preschools, and overseeing the early literacy area.

From Colby, Sager attended Fort Hays State University. She majored in interior design, and while in college, she worked at Happy Days Childcare as a teaching assistant. After graduation, she worked as an interior designer in Garden City but wanted to return to childcare. Sager became a PreK teacher at Turning Point Academy before moving back to Hays where she has been the lead PreK teacher at the HaysMed childcare facility run by Bright Minds Academy.

“I’m really wanting to implement a fun and structured learning environment that helps kids get ready for their next big step,” said Sager.

Sager began working at the Hays Public Library on August 19, 2024.

Our annual Pioneer Day will be held on October 12th with a focus on the history of Nicodemus through a bike tour over gravel roads throughout the historic Nicodemus Township and neighboring Wild Horse Township, and town of Damar. For the serious bikers the 33.5mile tour is recommended. You’ll see the entire area with stops at 14 historic signs along the way. For a shorter trek we recommend the 21.5-mile tour. It will include 11 sign stops, if you trek only within the historic Nicodemus township, 13 signs if you go into Bogue and see 2 other signs then return to Nicodemus. 4 SAGS stops will provide riders with water, snacks and fruit. The SAGS are sponsored by Walmart of Hays, The Kansas Black Farmers Association, The Citizens of Bogue, and the Switzer/KSU Ag Camp for Youth. Registration can be done on line at nicodemushistoricalsociety.org. Register before Sept. 27th to ensure that you get a t-shirt!

When riders, guests, and spectators arrive at the Visitor Center for registration, they will be treated to a FREE ALL YOU CAN EAT BREAKFAST 8 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at ERNESTINE’S BBQ MUSEUM. The free breakfast is sponsored by the Kansas Black Farmers Association and The Land Institute and will include pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee.

Riders will leave on tours starting at 9:00 and are expected to return between noon-3:00. Food will be provided for a nominal cost for those not registered to ride and who want to enjoy the park with live music (bring your lawn chairs). For those who missed our history documentary, a free showing of the Ellis Trail to Nicodemus will be featured at 2:00 in the Visitor Center.

The day is expected to be great fun day for all. Everyone is welcome to ride and/or enjoy the free breakfast and a day of history with us. We encourage even the youth that have bikes to take a shorter route that will tour around the historic town of Nicodemus to various silhouettes and historic building sites. A longer ‘short’ tour will take you around to some of the historic tour signs, like the original baseball diamond and location of the early Emancipation Celebrations just south of Nicodemus. Pick the tour or the mileage you’d like to travel and be our guest to learn more about this history of one the nation’s most iconic African American national sites in the West.

Hays invites the public to a free historical presentation titled “Swords into Plowshares: A History of
Frontier Army Gardens” on Saturday, September 7th at 2:00 PM at the Fort
Hays State Historic Site, 1472 US Highway 183 Alt.

Presented by board member and Extension
Master Gardener Jeremy Gill, the talk will explore the unique role that
gardening played at the 19th-century post. Attendees will learn
about why soldiers grew gardens and the many challenges they faced on the
Kansas prairie to provide their own food supply.

Following the presentation, guests are
welcome to tour and ask questions about the Fort Hays Heirloom Garden, which is
maintained by the hard work and dedication of the Ellis County Extension Master
Gardeners.
