BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;The Kansas Legislature, a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature State Senator John Doll (Dist. #39 – Garden City) and State&nbsp;Representative Clarke Sanders&nbsp;(Dist. # 69 – Salina) on&nbsp;Friday, March 15 at 7 PM.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Legislature&nbsp;is a program that takes place during the legislative session and gives the legislators and viewers the opportunity to discuss up-to-date issues.&nbsp; During the program, viewers can call 1-800-337-4788 with their legislative questions.&nbsp;

Becky Kiser, News Reporter for Hays Post/Eagle Radio, has been named the moderator for the 2024 season of&nbsp;The Kansas Legislature.&nbsp; She will be joined by two or three legislators during each show.

LOGAN - Need a place to stash your red or white? The Hansen Museum will host a Basket Weaving class with Instructor Marsha Jensen of Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday, April 20th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hansen Museum Community Room, 110 W. Main, Logan, KS 67646.

In this workshop you will weave a basket with a divider that holds 2 bottles of wine. This basket uses a D handle that becomes part of the basket structure. There will be dyed reed available in a variety of colors for those who wish to include a color accent. A natural black walnut dip will be available as a finishing touch for your basket at the end of the class.

The cost to attend is $85 with discounts available for Patron &amp; Sustaining Museum Members. Registrations are non-refundable. Honoring the late co-founder of the Deines Cultural Center’s monthly jam session, a special “Pickin’ at the Deines” event is being held this month on March 17th. The 3rd Annual Ronn Raymer Memorial Jam will begin at 3 pm on Sunday, March 17th at the Center at 820 N. Main in Russell with the traditional pot luck supper served at 5 pm followed by more music. Participants are encouraged to bring their acoustic instrument(s), their voice, a listening ear, and a food dish to share.

Beginning with the Frances Giebler Fiddle Fest in 2003, Raymer and Bob Roe of Russell, JF Stover of Hill City, and Nancy Selbe, former director of the DCC began the sessions as a meeting and sharing of regional musicians. Sessions have been attended by professional and amateur musicians from Colorado, Kansas City, Hill City, Great Bend, Osborne, Plainville, Jetmore, Garden City, Sterling, Hays, Memphis and more.

Raymer was a consistent participant, leader and promoter of the jam sessions providing vocals and playing guitar, auto-harp, washboard and ukulele. His presence will be included at the memorial session with videos shared by his family and family members will be attending.

Lenten fish fry set for Friday in Victoria

The 3v3 Hays Youth Basketball tournament for&nbsp;this Saturday&nbsp;will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Hays Recreation Center.

I want to thank everyone for their support. Many people wanted this tournament to happen, and many kids were excited that it is happening. First and foremost, this is for the kids to have an opportunity to do something&nbsp;fun.

For this year, it is called the "Hays Youth Basketball 3v3 Tournament." For this year, it&nbsp;has zero affiliation&nbsp;with a school.&nbsp;Feel free to pass along the information to anyone who might need it.

All games will be at the Hays Recreation Center.

 All proceeds will be for the Hays youth teams and following representatives:

We can add more teams to all groups (specifically on the girl's side), but the following have multiple teams: fifth-grade girls, fifth-grade boys, eighth-grade boys, and sixth-grade boys. Medals will be awarded to the top team in each division.

Medals will also be given to shooting contest division winners.

We might combine ages, particularly with third and fourth grades.

We look to have a schedule out by&nbsp;Wednesday night or Thursday mid-day. The schedule will be on this email chain. We are looking to have everyone play at least four games. Games are 12 minutes each.

Cost is $15 per player and admission is $3 (children younger than 5 are free) $2 for the shooting contest.

Hays city commissioners will today discuss a citizen's request to allow golf carts to be driven on city streets.

If the city commission chooses to allow golf carts, it is staff’s recommendation that they be insured, operated by a licensed driver over the age of 18, and have seat belts.&nbsp;

Other agenda items for the March 7 work session include an annual activity report from North Central Kansas Technical College and its use of the city-owned Big Creek campus on Main Street.

Jeff Crispin, director of water resources, will present a low bid recommendation to upgrade the waterline along Walnut Street between 11th and 17th Streets. Bids were received from two contractors with the low bid coming from J Corp, Hays, for $759,955.

Midwest Energy's Hays, Kan., office is hiring an IT Service Desk Technician. The position will be responsible for responding to queries, running diagnostic programs, isolating problems, determining viable resolutions, and implementing the appropriate solutions. The technician will identify software and computer system end-user training needs along with coordinating, facilitating and/or conducting end-user training. American Legion steak feed in Dorrance March 16

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on March 4, in the area of Main St. to Vine St. between 12th St. and 21st St. also Commerce Parkway south of Highway 40 to include Hays Regional Airport. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the City of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually. 

Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency. 

Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes. The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. 

Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer.

Annual fire hydrant inspection, flow testing begins today in Hays

The city of Hays will temporarily convert the disinfectant used in the distribution system from chloramine to free chlorine.

The conversion will begin on Tuesday and continue through May 12. During this period, you may experience taste and odor changes associated with this type of temporary disinfectant conversion.

Public water systems are required to properly disinfect their water and maintain an adequate disinfectant residual in the distribution system. 

Chloramine, free chlorine combined with ammonia, is widely used as a disinfectant because it persists for longer periods while also limiting the formation of disinfection by-product contaminants.

Prolonged use of chloramine coupled with other factors that can impact water quality, such as high temperatures or reduced usage of water, may result in the growth and/or persistence of organic matter within the pipes of the distribution system, which may hinder the ability to maintain an adequate disinfectant residual.

The Hays Fire Department is conducting its annual testing of all 1,080 hydrants at the same time to rid distribution pipes of this organic matter and improve the quality of your water overall.

The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is announcing that an asphalt milling project will take place in the 100 - 500 blocks of Ellis Avenue. 

The road will be closed to through traffic from South County Line to Grants Villa Road. 

The project will begin at 7:30 am on Monday, April 1st. 

Motorists traveling in the affected area should use alternate routes of travel until the project is complete. 

The road will be closed to through traffic for the safety of staff and the traveling public.

World Water Day is an annual observance focusing on the importance of water. To celebrate, the city of Hays and the KSU Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds are once again partnering to host a World Water Day Fun Fest on from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 12 at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

Get to “Know Your Water” with fun, hands-on, "water-related" activities and displays for kids of all ages. This free event is open to all.
