Fair Entry is open and ready for you to enter your projects for judging at the 2024 Ellis County Fair! You will enter your projects online at 2024 Ellis County Fair - FairEntry.com. The fair is not just for 4-H members but for those of the community as well. Entries for those not in 4-H will go in the Open Class Division of the fair. There are many different project areas to choose from, including but not limited to needlework, arts and crafts, fine arts, horticulture, and photography. There are certain rules entries must follow, find them in the open class fairbook at 2024-open-class-fair-book (ellisco.net).

Be sure to participate in our coloring contest sponsored by Nutrien Ag. All coloring pages will be on display during the fair and the first three places of each age division will be awarded prizes.

You can purchase a single pass for one low price of $35. Besides the Grandstand events, there are many free events on the midway for the family. Enjoy music, the petting zoo, pedal pull, Big Rigs and Little Kids, and face painting to name a few. There will be a Lego Bricks Building Contest open to the public as well. Food vendors will be lined up on the midway and livestock shows will be in the show arena. The inflatable carnival and games will be open Tuesday, July 16 through Saturday, July 20.

We invite the community to come support our hard working 4-H youth of Ellis County. View their livestock, or stroll through the air-conditioned Schenk building looking at entries. Our commercial vendors will be located in our building in the midway this year.

Different Mindset sets beef raffle to support dementia/Alzheimer's programs

The Hays Oilers cheerleading registration is open for the 2024 season.

Oilers Cheerleading is a youth cheerleading organization that was established in 2018.

This cheerleading squad stands out because it is the only youth organization in Hays that provides an authentic cheerleading experience, including cheering on the field at football games.

The&nbsp;Oilers Cheerleading  squad receives recognition for its distinctive pom performances, ripples, sharpness and spirit.

Accepting all first–sixth graders, these cheerleaders cheer for the Hays Oilers home football games.

The Oilers Cheerleading season begins in July with practices and ends in November with the end-of-the-year awards ceremony.

While experiencing authentic cheerleading, the&nbsp;Oilers Cheerleading  squad is also known for having fun, making memories and hosting cheerleading camps.

This year, the Hays Oilers cheerleaders are very excited to announce their camp with Molly Mohajir, a KU Rock Chalk Dancer.

Mohajir&nbsp;is a four-year member of the Rock Chalk Dance team. She was also on the Jonesboro High School dance team for four years.

Her team placed first at the 5A state competition and competed at the Universal Dance Association nationals twice.&nbsp;Mohajir has taken part in bowl games, March Madness, and was a representative for KU at the Big 12 Media Day in Dallas.&nbsp; The group very ecstatic to welcome her on August 6. 

The Hays Oilers squad is so delighted to announce that they are hosting their annual cheerleading camp with the Hays High School cheerleading squad. The Hays High School cheerleading squad took home a first-place trophy for the Showcase Showdown at Shrine Bowl in 2023.

The team is coached by head coach Heather Wellbrock and assistant coach Alexis Gonzalez. This year, the team consists of 23 members. Our Barbie Cheer Camp will take place on Aug. 1.

The Hays Oilers Cheerleading organization hosts annual fundraisers, participates in the Fort Hays State University Homecoming Parade and the Hays High School Homecoming Parade, and cheers at football games, performs, and has fun activities throughout their season.

By registering your child, your child will learn many cheers, chants, basic stunting techniques, sharpness, motion techniques, routines, cheer counts, cheer jumps, ripples and performance materials.

BUNKER HILL – The much anticipated 51st annual Kansas Shrine Bowl is set to take place at Emporia State University’s Welch Stadium on June 29 at 7 p.m.&nbsp; This iconic event, showcasing the best high school football talent from across the state, will be broadcast live on Smoky Hills PBS for fans to enjoy from the comfort of their homes.&nbsp; The game will bring top eastern and western Kansas players to compete for the coveted title.

The Kansas Shrine Bowl is more than just a football game; it is a tradition steeped in history and community spirit, bringing together athletes, families, and supporters from all over Kansas. The Lemonade Stand Challenge between Hays and Russell, is a fundraising competition to support park accessibility.

This year marks Hays's fifth-annual lemonade stand event and Russell's third, continuing their efforts to create fun, safe and inclusive parks for all ages and abilities.

Friday is Day 2 in Hays and kicks off the two-day event in Russell, which will continue on Saturday.

Participants can win prizes donated by local businesses in various categories, including most money earned, best stand, most creative name and overall fan favorite.

ELLIS COUNTY — Members of the Ellis County Ham Operators (ECHO) will be participating in the national amateur radio Field Day exercise June 22–23 at Historic Fort Hays, 1472 U.S. Highway 183 Alt., Hays.

The event runs from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.&nbsp;

Field Day is a showcase for how amateur radio works reliably under any conditions from almost any location to create an independent communications network.&nbsp;

“Ham radio functions completely independent of the internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with laptops or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of amateur radio during a communications outage,” says Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R, spokesperson for ARRL.

The national association for amateur radio, (<a href="http://www.arrl.org/" target="_blank">www.arrl.org</a>), represents amateur or “ham” radio operators across the country.

“In today’s electronic do-it-yourself environment, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other scientific disciplines, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters or emergencies if the standard communication infrastructure goes down,” Inderbitzen said.

Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 750,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as 9 and as old as 100.

Municipal Waste will remain open, the gates will be closed
at 4:45 p.m., and no dumping will be allowed after that time.

Share a Story is a 45-60 minute program geared toward children ages 2-7. Each program consists of the&nbsp;following format:

Share a Story helps children become better readers by inspiring adults to read to children every day.

Simple, fun daily activities like reading aloud, storytelling, rhyming, singing, exercise, drawing, and acting,&nbsp;teach young children language and literacy skills – and that’s what Smoky Hills PBS Share a Story is all&nbsp;about!

This year, the Wild West Festival has implemented changes to its volunteer structure, making it easier than ever for individuals to get involved and contribute their time and talents. With a variety of roles available, ranging from event setup and logistics to hospitality and entertainment, there is something for everyone to help with.

"We understand that everyone has busy schedules, which is why we've made it a priority to offer flexible volunteer opportunities that accommodate different time commitments," Ridgway said. "Whether you can spare an hour or dedicate an entire week, there are ways for you to make a meaningful impact and be a part of this community event."

To sign up as a volunteer for the Wild West Festival, interested individuals can visit the event website at wildwestfestival.com, where they will find sign-up forms and more information about available roles and responsibilities.

Event set-up is expected to begin the morning of June 29 and conclude with a clean-up day on July 7.

The Hays Larks are inviting everyone to the 15th annual
Military Appreciation Night in conjunction with their game against the Colorado
Roughriders on Saturday, June 15th at Larks Park at 7 p.m.&nbsp; All active, reserve, and retired military
personnel are specially invited to attend and will be honored on the field
during pregame ceremonies. Military personnel will also be recognized after the
6th inning prior to the singing of “God Bless America”. Military personnel in
attendance should check in at the east side of the grandstand by 6:45 pm
Saturday evening.

Fans are encouraged to be in the park by 6:50 pm to show
their appreciation and support for all military personnel during pregame
ceremonies. Those ceremonies will feature recognition of all military personnel
in attendance, a Color Guard, and the National Anthem sung live by Uncalled-4.
Those in attendance will also enjoy patriotic music and a red, white, and blue
decorated park throughout the evening.&nbsp;
Flags lining the park will be provided courtesy of American Legion
Riders Post #173 of Hays, KS. Free admission to the game will be provided
courtesy of the Hays VFW Post 9076, VFW Auxiliary, and Kiwanis Club of Hays.

In 1984, Esther Taggart and Irene Boone recognized a need for assistance for Ellis County residents.  They responded by creating the Community Assistance Center, which offers disadvantaged residents of Ellis County food, clothing, furniture, and miscellaneous items to aid them during their time of crisis. 

 This year, we celebrate 40 years of service to the community, and the philosophy remains strong and true.

 The business that donates the most items will be named the Top Pantry Contributor for 2024. They will also be the new owner of the traveling trophy.
