The Heartland Community Foundation is gearing up for its 2024 Match Month fundraising campaign in February -- building on the success of seven previous years and aiming for an even bigger goal to go with a supersized match offer.

Between February 1 and 29, all donations to the County Legacy Funds at the Heartland Community Foundation will be matched 300% The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is providing a remarkable $2 for $1 match, while the Patterson Family Foundation is generously contributing a $1 for $1 match. These offers can be stacked, making your donation even more impactful. A $100 donation becomes $400, $1,000 becomes $4,000, and $5,000 becomes $20,000!

To capture all of the match dollars possible for our communities, the Heartland Community Foundation must raise at least $70,000 in each Ellis, Rooks, and Trego County. By achieving this goal and maximizing the impact of the match offers, each County Legacy Fund is expected to pass the $1 million mark -- establishing a lasting impact in the communities.

Last year's Match Month campaign raised a total of $213,773, with the Dane G. Hansen Foundation's 200% match contributing to a grand total of $513,773 for the County Legacy Funds. Funds raised stay in the respective communities, generating investment income used to make grants for crucial projects and programs.

"As we set our sights on achieving the $70,000 goal in each county, we invite the community to help. We are so grateful to the Dane G. Hansen Foundation and the Patterson Family Foundation for their support and the vote of confidence. Their investment is a true testament to the power of endowment. Heartland Community Foundation launches 2024 Match Month

<a href="http://www.hayschamber.com">The Chamber in Hays</a>&nbsp;is set to once again give area residents the opportunity to speak directly with area leaders during the 2024 Legislative Coffee series.

The first session is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hays Public Library, 1205 Main.

The series is free and open to the public.

Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO of the Chamber, said the annual series is one of the most important endeavors of the year for the Chamber.

"The Legislative Coffee session serves as a crucial platform for citizens to stay informed about legislative developments in our area,” Wasinger said. “It is an invaluable opportunity to have a direct dialogue with our legislators, enabling the community to voice concerns and seek clarification on important matters."

The session invites attendees to pose questions to individual legislators or the panel as a whole, creating a dynamic and interactive environment. This engagement fosters a sense of transparency and accountability, essential for a thriving democratic society, she said.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our legislative premier sponsors, Midwest Energy and the Hays Daily News, for their generous support in making this event possible,” Wasinger said. “Their commitment to community engagement aligns with the mission of the Chamber, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between local businesses and the legislative process.

On Saturday, February 17th, the class will paint “Western Expanse,” and on Sunday, February 18th, “Mountains at Sunrise.” Classes are held in the Hansen Museum Community Room, 110 W. Main Street, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day just like Bob did on TV. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

Ellis school plans soup luncheon

The Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership program, now in its 33rd year, is accepting applications for its 2024-26 class. Applications will be accepted through April 1. Thirty members of Class XVII will be announced on June 1 in Manhattan.

Through in-state seminars, and national and international study tours, new class members will receive more than 400 hours of training over two years in agriculture, business and rural communities.

The program is designed to enhance class members skills as they prepare for leadership roles in agriculture, business and rural communities.

KARL graduates become part of an alumni network and have gone on to serve in the state legislature, farm organizations, agribusinesses and community government and organizations.

The program is for anyone who wants to learn more about our state, country and global entities, especially as they pertain to agriculture and rural communities. KARL participants will also learn ways to enhance their communication skills and broaden their circle of friends and business connections.

Once applications close, a list of finalists will be interviewed by a selection committee in May and the new class roster will be announced on June 1.

KARL is a member of the International Association of Programs for Agricultural Leaders. IAPAL has member associations in 40 states and multiple countries.

Applications will be accepted through April 1. Thirty members of Class XVII will be announced on June 1 in Manhattan.Through in-state seminars, and national and international study tours, new class members will receive more than 400 hours of training over two years in agriculture, business and rural communities.The program is designed to enhance class members skills as they prepare for leadership roles in agriculture, business and rural communities.KARL graduates become part of an alumni network and have gone on to serve in the state legislature, farm organizations, agribusinesses and community government and organizations.The program is for anyone who wants to learn more about our state, country and global entities, especially as they pertain to agriculture and rural communities. The advisory was issued Jan. 17 because of an equipment malfunction due to freezing, resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. 

 Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

On Monday, city of Hays water meter readers will be walking and gathering meter readings throughout the town. &nbsp;

The recent snow and ice have buried some residential and commercial water meters. &nbsp;The Department of Water Resources asks that if you know the location of your meter, and are able, please try to uncover it so staff is able to read it .

Hays property owners asked to remove snow from around water meters before Monday

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment&nbsp; has issued a boil water advisory for the city of Logan public water supply system located in Phillips County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.&nbsp;

• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.&nbsp;

• If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.&nbsp;

• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.&nbsp;

• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.&nbsp;

The advisory took effect on January 17 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of an equipment malfunction due to freezing, resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

The Hays Area Planning Commission will meet today at 4 p.m. in Hays City Hall, 1507 Main.

The Jan. 15 agenda includes a review and consideration of a Feb. 19, 2024 public hearing for the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction future land use map.

In November 2021, the city of Hays and Ellis County reduced the&nbsp;extraterritorial jurisdiction &nbsp;by approximately 60%.&nbsp;Many areas of the existing future land use map were vaguely identified or labeled as urban reserve. With the reduction of the extraterritorial jurisdiction, staff can now be more specific in planning for land use around Hays. 

Commissioners will also discuss the organization and future board structure of the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.

Government surplus commodities set for Jan. 24 distribution

GREAT BEND — In response to the blizzard conditions this week, the city of Great Bend and Great Bend Alive would like to announce a date change for the newly revamped "Beat the Winter Blues Sale and Snowball Drop." Originally scheduled for Saturday, the event will now be on Jan. 20.

The decision to reschedule the event was made to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, taking into consideration various factors such as weather conditions and logistical considerations.

"We understand the excitement and anticipation surrounding our 'Beat the Winter Blues Sale and Snowball Drop,' and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the date change. The participating stores voted to move it to provide the safest and best experience for everyone involved.” said Christina Hayes, community coordinator. "Our top priority is the safety and satisfaction of citizens and visitors, and we are so excited that Great Bend Alive is adding the Snowball Drop inside the Crest – we felt that moving the date would be the best option for all!”

SubmittedGREAT BEND — In response to the blizzard conditions this week, the city of Great Bend and Great Bend Alive would like to announce a date change for the newly revamped "Beat the Winter Blues Sale and Snowball Drop." Originally scheduled for Saturday, the event will now be on Jan. 20.The decision to reschedule the event was made to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, taking into consideration various factors such as weather conditions and logistical considerations."We understand the excitement and anticipation surrounding our 'Beat the Winter Blues Sale and Snowball Drop,' and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the date change. The participating stores voted to move it to provide the safest and best experience for everyone involved.” said Christina Hayes, community coordinator. Ellis County business offices will be closed until noon Tuesday due to the weather.  The 8:30 a.m. Ellis County Commission meeting will be pushed back until 1:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon for the same reasons.  The commission meeting will still be held in the Ellis County Commission Chambers at 718 Main Street.&nbsp;

Due to incoming inclement weather, with the possibility of blizzard conditions this afternoon, the Ellis&nbsp;County business offices will close at 12:00 p.m. 

Emergency services will remain operational. 

The Ellis&nbsp;County Landfill will stay open until midafternoon to allow for municipal trash collection to be completed.
