The Downtown Hays Development Corp. announced Wednesday it will postpone its annual Brews on the Bricks event until Aug. 29 in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

DHDC said in a Facebook post that it will refund the ticket price for people who will not be able to attend the August event.

"We are asking that refunds be requested before July 30, 2020. We also ask that you consider donating the cost of your tickets to DHDC, a 501c3 non-profit organization. We appreciate any and all support that helps us continue to grow and market Downtown Hays," the post said.

The fundraiser supports DHDC operations and is its largest fundraiser of the year.

If you purchased online and would like a refund, simply give DHDC a call at 785-621-4171. If you bought in office, message DHDC or email dhdc@downtownhays.com to set up an appointment to exchange your tickets for a check, the post said. If you would like to donate the cost of your tickets, email dhdc@downtownhays.com for the DHDC tax ID number.

continue. However, we must also realize the concerns and level of safety for the public as well
as our valued employees.


Following recommendations of our Public Health Officer, Ellis County offices will remain open to
the public with normal hours. We are taking additional steps and precautions to protect both
the employees and the public. Currently the Health Department reports Ellis County is still in a
low level of threat and there are no positive COVID-19 cases in Ellis County. We are encouraging
everyone to follow the CDC and KDHE guidelines and recommendations. Gatherings of 50
people or more are prohibited per the Governors Executive Order 20-04. We are following the
KDHE mandated travel quarantine for all of Ellis County including our employees.


The Ellis County Commission asks for your help in providing service by calling the office you
need to do business with to schedule an appointment in advance. We ask if you are sick, to
please stay home and wait until you recover, or try to conduct your business over the phone or
send an email if possible.


Please be advised this is a dynamic situation and we are working though this daily as the

help keep our community informed.

The Victoria USD 432 school district will be offering grab-and-go lunches for children from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday at Victoria Elementary School.

Students must be present to receive the meals.

The American Red Cross is in urgent need of healthy blood donors.

The Heartland Community Foundation, which serves Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties, is accepting applications for spring grants. Online applications open March 15 are due Friday, May 15, 2020.

This year, over $150,000 is available to charitable projects in Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties, with more than $50,000 available per county. This cycle will fund local community projects that meet one or more of the following criteria:

· Projects focused on improving quality of life.

· Projects that support the public health of Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties.

· Projects supporting education, health care, community social services and security, conservation and environment, arts and culture, and community beautification.

Funding for the spring grant cycle is provided by the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, the Heartland Healthy Living Fun, the Heartland Area Action Fund, the Ellis County Legacy Fund, the Rooks County Legacy Fund, the Stockton Community Fund and the Trego County Legacy Fund.

Grants are limited to projects in Ellis, Rooks and Trego counties and will be awarded through a competitive application process. Nonprofit organizations, including government and public entities, educational institutions and churches, are encouraged to apply. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. on May 15. Each year the NW 4-H Advisory hosts a two-day recreation leadership workshop for those working with youth and other groups.&nbsp; This year the focus is on the “Team Bonding, Team Building or Team Development?”&nbsp;


In this workshop, Michelle Cummings will share insights and strategies on how to surface behaviors through play through experiential activities. This high-energy, hands-on workshop will teach participants how to play some of the industry’s
 best icebreakers, leadership games and unique ways to reflect on what you are learning. 

Cummings will engage you physically, intellectually and mentally with lots of opportunity for laughter and learning. Attendees will discover how powerful the impact of
 the value of connection, leadership, and purposeful play have on the participants in your programs.


Day 1 is designed for school teams (FFA, FCCLA, KAY, DECA, etc., 7th – 12th grade, adult sponsors, staff and volunteers who work with groups of people routinely.&nbsp; 

Day 2 is a completely different session, so plan
 to come for one, the other or both days.

Free star gazing during FHSU Astro Night

ATWOOD - Originally scheduled for the evening of Monday, March 16, in Atwood, the “Our Community’s Story: Shaping the Future of Rawlins County” story-sharing event, has been cancelled.

Plans are underway to reschedule for a later date.

Planned in conjunction with the Center for Public Partnership and Research at the University of Kansas (CPPR, LiveWell Northwest Kansas plans to share stories of what life in northwest Kansas is like and discuss what changes could occur so that struggling families can thrive—not merely survive. Data that will be shared is derived directly from real stories gathered from residents last year as part of CPPR’s “Our Tomorrows” program.

Additionally, a $500 higher education scholarship will be given away once a new date is secured.

Rawlins County event canceled

HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, is sponsoring a free healthy cooking class for breast cancer survivors from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18.&nbsp; The event will be held at The Center for Health Improvement Education Room, 2500 Canterbury.

This is a hands-on cooking class and demonstration and will include nutrition tips from a registered dictation and interactive cooking.&nbsp; You will be able to socialize with other breast cancer survivors in a casual setting, enjoy a meal and leave with a simple health meal to make at home.

RSVP by March 16 at 11:00 am to 785-623-5441.&nbsp; Registration is required and seating is limited.&nbsp;
