HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, is sponsoring a free healthy cooking class for breast cancer survivors from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18.&nbsp; The event will be held at The Center for Health Improvement Education Room, 2500 Canterbury.

This is a hands-on cooking class and demonstration and will include nutrition tips from a registered dictation and interactive cooking.&nbsp; You will be able to socialize with other breast cancer survivors in a casual setting, enjoy a meal and leave with a simple health meal to make at home.

Grainfield American Legion will have a special fish fry March 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion building in Grainfield to raise money for new doors for the building.  

Doors are 25 years or older.  Serving Alaskan Halibut, Hush Puppies, Scalloped Potatoes, Macaroni &amp; Cheese, baked beans, green beans, Variety of Salads and Desserts.  All for $18.&nbsp;

At 5 p.m. Sunday, April 5,&nbsp; at the Hays High School gym, there will be a Battle of the Badges charity basketball game for Mitch Berans — policemen vs firefighters.

Admission is free and donations will be accepted. 

A 50/50 raffle will be offered. There will also be a raffle for items including a Traeger grill, a garage door installation and a Yeti cooler and tumbler at halftime.&nbsp;Raffle tickets will be $10 and can be purchased in advance.

Food vendors will be onsite with 10 percent of the proceeds going to Berens.

Orders are also being taken for T-shirts, which will cost $15.

The event is sponsored by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/YVTChays/">Your Voice Through Cancer</a>, a nonprofit cancer support group. For more information, call 785-639-3690.

The Kansas State Extension Master Gardeners will offer a free lawn mowing clinic for anyone age 10 or older.

Lawnmower maintenance, safety and lawn care will be addressed at 1 p.m. March 24 at the K-State Ag Research Center in Hays. There will be a rain day of March 27.

Pre-registration is required at the Ellis County Extension office by March 17 by calling (785) 628-9430.&nbsp;

From 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6, the Victoria Knights of Columbus will host a Lenten Fish Fry.

Fish, noodles and beans, baked potatos and cole slaw are on the menu.

Proceeds from the event will be used to help local charities.

Mark Twain impersonator Ken Church
will be the featured speaker at the Dr. Max Pickerill Lecture Series hosted by Colby Community College on Tuesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in Frahm Theatre on the CCC campus.


Church, of Leavenworth, has been performing as the iconic

American writer and humorist
since 1972. Church did his first one-man show as a student at the University of Kansas for a political fundraiser. After college, he taught 41 years in Kansas high schools and a variety of night courses for Cloud County Community College, Pratt
 Community College, Donnelly College (Lansing Correctional Facility, and Highland Community College.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Of his show, Church says, "My goal is to do all I can to allow each listener to feel as though Mark Twain is speaking just to him or her."


He grew to love the writing of Twain through the influence of the late Edith Hetzel, the speech and drama coach and librarian at Crest High School where he attended.


He sees much in Twain that is pertinent and needed today.


"Mark Twain is a huge part of the cultural fabric of our country, really of the world," Church said. "He is not a perfect human being, but he is one of the most human of human beings."

The choirs of Fort Hays State University will present their Spring Choral Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the&nbsp;Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall.

 The Concert Choir of 60 voices and the Fort Hays Singers&nbsp;of 21 voices will both appear, singing a wide variety of choral&nbsp;titles.

Also, there will be solos and some theatrical aspects of&nbsp;several of the selections by both choirs to make for even more fun.

 Both ensembles are conducted by Dr. Terry Crull and accompanied by Pam McGowne.

The 10th annual Big Event hosted by Student Government Association, the FHSU Foundation, Tigers in Service, and Student Engagement is a way to say “Thank You” and an opportunity to serve the communities of Ellis, Hays, and Victoria.

As a part of I Love FHSU Week, classes in the afternoon of Fri., April 24 will be cancelled after 12:30 p.m. and volunteering will take place from 1-5 p.m.

Projects big and small will be accomplished by teams to improve our surroundings and the lives of the people in our community. Hays Rec will host pickle ball tournament

COLBY - Young adults and community members can sign up for a drawing to win a $500 higher education scholarship by attending a community “story-sharing” event in Atwood. The “Our Community’s Story: Shaping the Future of Rawlins County” event will take place from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 16 at the Rawlins County Jr./Sr. High School, 100 N. 8th Street, Atwood.

In 2019, LiveWell Northwest Kansas (LiveWell) partnered with the University of Kansas’ Center for Public Partnerships and Research (CPPR) as part of their “Our Tomorrows” campaign to collect and share stories of what life in northwest Kansas is like. The stories centered on the ability of families to thrive, or merely survive. 

“LiveWell partnered with area residents and youth to collect stories from families throughout the region,” explained LiveWell Director Travis Rickford. “Additionally, a middle-school student worked with local employers and programs to collect over 100 stories himself. As a result of his work, a $1,000 donation was made to his school in Atwood and the program gained state-wide and national recognition.” 

The successful “Our Tomorrows” story-collecting work in Rawlins County also garnered interest from early childcare and health organizers at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, an international organization observed by the United Nations, and was featured at the Governor’s Symposium on early childhood education in October 2019. 

“The stories that were gathered last year relate to the value of frontier life and rural living, economic hardships and community supports. These stories of hope and struggle help us gather wisdom about the ways in which things could, and should, be going better, and to shape the future of Rawlins County and the greater northwest Kansas community. By attending the event in Atwood on March 16, people will learn how families thrive and about the disrupters that can prevent this from happening.” 

“Our Community’s Story: Shaping the Future of Rawlins County,” is a youth-led event and will highlight stories in Rawlins County.

“Youth involvement has been a major factor in the success of the “Our Tomorrows” program and as our leaders of tomorrow, we hope to pass on valuable information that will not only benefit our next generation personally but can ensure our community’s ability to thrive in the future,” says Rickford. 

Not only will the event be facilitated by youth, but to encourage more participation, a drawing to win a $500 scholarship will take place. 

Rickford says that the winner must be present to accept the scholarship in person and any child or adult in attendance may register to win. The scholarship may be used at any time, either personally or gifted to another individual, and may be used at any accredited higher learning institute.  

The “Our Tomorrows” project spearheaded by CPPR allows people across the state to share important stories about their life and interactions. Each story allows for a new learning opportunity and can be used to shape policy and programming decisions in small communities across the state and across the country. 

Through the “Our Tomorrows” project, people get the opportunity to share and reflect, and CPPR is able to hear new, unique perspectives. Stories are added to CPPR’s story-based research tool called SenseMaker, and patterns are examined allowing for new understandings about what families need to thrive, not merely survive. 

Rickford explains that stories, patterns and data collected from the Sensemaking tool will have many implications—internationally, regionally and even locally. 

“The Sensemaking platform will help us acknowledge life barriers that people encounter,” he says, “and better understand the needs of our residents and steps people can take to make stronger, more thriving communities.”
