Fire burns hundreds of acres as Kan. governor issues disaster declaration

COWLEY COUNTY —A large grass fire burned hundreds of acres Sunday in Cowley County as Gov. Laura Kelly declared a state of emergency in response to a high fire danger in much of the state. 

Late Sunday afternoon, fire crews responded to the fire north of Maple City, south of the County State Lake east of Arkansas City, according to Cowley County Emergency Management.

The Kansas Forest Service provided assistance with Tanker 95 and staff  assisting with resource coordination and air to ground communication.

U.S. Highway 166 was temporarily closed in the area as fire approached the  highway. There are no reports of injury and no word on what caused the fire.
