DE SOTO – The Hays High baseball team battled toe-to-toe with the No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A. Blue Valley Southwest scored a run in the top of the first and beat the 8th-ranked Indians 1-0 Thursday.

Cooper Johnson was outstanding on the mound. The only run the junior allowed came on a one out sacrifice fly following a leadoff triple. Johnson allowed only three more hits the rest of the way with three strikeouts and no walks in the complete game effort.

Blue Valley Southwest's Sterling Widman was equally impressive on the mound scattering five hits and never getting to a three-ball count.

The Indians had some chances early, stranding four in scoring position but only one in the last four innings.
